Chapter Five of Six
Watergate
Shoving Ulric and Pro into a corner of the brig with his glare alone Blur glances to Sovy who raises an eyebrow at the two unexpected guests in the other cells, Blur doesn't bother closing their doors nor locking them and instead opts to hover next to the stairs ensuring nobody can escape him.
Blur: Go and stand in that fucking corner, stand over there right?! And do not move, or I will perform a fucking living fucking autopsy on you with a fucking rusty blade and a spoon! I'll have your ballocks for fucking cuff-links!
Threats and wrathful hate boiled over as Blur growled at the two liars ensuring there was no mistake for how dire their situation was, Blur snapped over to Sovy with a strained voice trying to keep a lid on his terrible rage.
Blur: Sovy I lied. You have two guests now! I'm so sorry to intrude on you so quickly but allow me some time to deal with these two and then we can discuss this mole situation. Who knows, I think I found them.
Sovy: I've underestimated you Monarch you do work fast. But why not lock them up properly?
Blur: I don't know yet, we're about to find out together. So you two.
Talk.
Blur leans against the wall listening to the footfall above them, running back and too with the odd shout and crane crank. Preparations ran smoothly as Blur waited for his two friends to get their story straight and passed the time sharpening his claws skinning them over his blade with a spark. His dreadful mood fluctuated as he grappled for control of how to deal with his friends.
Pro: Ok I'll go first then, look this isn't as bad as you think it is Monarch. Yeah sure it's one of the biggest scores in my life but the rebellion has only gained from our little ploy.
Blur doesn't respond or react simply waiting for more information, Pro coughs getting more comfortable in his cell playing the part for Blur's appeasement and making Ulric roll his eyes. Sovy just chuckles enjoying the show the rogue is trying to put on.
Pro: What we did is simply amazing Monarch, swindling an entire country? Now that's not something you see every day and funny enough we have Sovy to thank for the idea.
Blur raises an eyebrow looking to Sovy who shrugs having no idea what Pro is talking about, the dragon stops his entraced starring and is perplexed at being in any way related to the rebel's plans.
Sovy: Don't look at me Monarch, he's trying to rope me into their problems. I've done nothing apart from appearing in your headquarters.
Pro: Exactly my point Monarch, Damek cheated death and rose from the ashes. If it could be done in the throes of chaos then it's something we could definitely pull off with a little dedication.
Blur: You are joking with me?! Christ, you are so dense? Fuck sakes I can see light bending around you Pro!
Blur's voice boomed with disbelief looking at Pro with his mouth agaspe and waving his paws into the air in frustration.
Blur: Damek survived because I unleashed Howl in my dying breath! Hells Sovy was this close to killing me and only due to a miracle did any of us get out of there alive!
You're telling me you based your stunt off of...luck?!
Pro:...Well, when you say it like that it does sound pretty... unbelievable ... but we're living proof it worked! Me and Ulric made sure to even the odds so one of us would always win.
I knew Ulric was going to side with Vivien so I went to him and forged this whole idea.
Blur scoffs shaking his head at Pro's brazen disregard for the laws of physics and the lack of respect for the natural order of the universe. How could the husky genuinely believe he had a chance at pulling off the impossible and achieving it, this was surely too good to be true. Unless godly help was on hand.
Blur humms in thought looking to Ulric for any comments, leaning over on some crates as he works away trying to lift a nailed-down lid and growling in stress.
Ulric: At first I didn't want to work with Pro, believe me, you're not the first one to tell him it was impossible.
Stealing the future of a national right infront of their eye? But he was so insistent, especially in the deserts.
Blur: So that's what you two were whispering about...
Ulric gave a soft nod sighing with a small amount of regret, all these secrets were slowly outweighing their worth but the time to rid this weight was here and Ulric seized it with great urgency.
Ulric: The plan as I'm sure you've guessed, I stand with Vivien. Pro stands with Draycu and whoever you choose to align with would win by our combined efforts.
Pro blushes as he rubs the tops of his ears with a bright grin recounting his masterful manipulation of Draycu. Squeezing his eyes closed he almost feels like he's reliving the moment.
Pro: Draycu didn't have a clue what was happening, he thought he'd be using our army and with some subtle ego stroking he had no idea we were using him instead. I always planned to be by his side Monarch but only so the rebellion would thrive no matter what happens.
After that, all we only needed was this beauty and some chaos, Ulric made it me years ago few years ago when I was a pup... I always liked acting ya know?
He holds up the same dagger Ulric used to kill him, he runs the blade over his finger showing its incredibly dull and was entirely harmless unable to break skin. He then presses it into his head.
Slowly the dagger withdrew into the handle demonstrating it was a spring toy, Pro was never in any real danger of being killed by his fake weapon and laughed doing the same spinning trick flicking the dagger through his fingers with ease.
Pro: So with this dagger and the chaos you graciously provided, the battle went in any direction we wanted.
Blur: Hang on a minute, the chaos I provided? ...my blade?
Pro: Ding ding ding the very same, it's why Ulric pushed you to use it. We knew you'd be ready to use it when the time calls for it. Seems like the Blade of Exodus is obeying your command more than I thought.
Blur: Oh yeah? Right now I'm asking it to slap you both yet it's on strike apparently. I cannot believe you two!
This was so wreckless, why didn't you tell me this? I could have done something to interrupt your plan inadvertently! As soon as we're out on the ocean, you're walking the plank!
Slamming in frustration Blur pulls out the Blade of Exodus pointing it at Ulric and Pro, nothing happens as he wishes to turn them into slugs so instead he uses it to start breaking his way into the crate that still withheld its delicious contents.
Blur: If you tell Alex I'll start cutting fingers off. So go on, why wasn't I told? Pro? Ulric?
...
Ulric: It was my idea not to tell you, you won't like the reasons but it was sensible... we didn't want to risk the Triumvirates learning anything from your visions ...if it was even possible. If there were any leaks everything we did would be for nothing.
There was a tone in Ulric's voice that Blur knew he was holding back a true answer, something Ulric hoped Blur could hear and understand the point of. Sighing with a slow nod Blur whines and kicks the crate not finding any joy with the blade as leverage.
Blur: Fine...
I can understand the reason and you're totally right. I hate that reason...but I do accept it.
I really hate it though...
Ulric: I hear that Monarch, I do, but look at where we stand. Seriously consider we got away with it. The rebellion has Alarinthia's army, nobody from the rebellion died just Vivien's own men and we have a legendary story.
Now I'd call that a success, wouldn't you?
Blur hummed tapping his claws in consideration as Pro cheered loudly, Blur squinted his eyes in response unamused and hungry.
Pro: Are you kidding? That's got to be my masterpiece I don't know how I could even begin to top that!
Pro is completely unaware of Blur's glare making him twitch a smile, rolling his eyes and waving a paw over to Ulric and Pro they walk out of their respective cells cautiously.
Blur: You are both morons... but I'm very...very ... still gods danmed angry!
Taking a deep breath Blur stares at his two friends rubbing his face with a moan, the anger turns to disbelief which then melts into a mixture of pride, love and loss.
Blur: And ... I'm impressed with you of both. Your dedication to the rebellion isn't lost on me, I could have demolished Alarinthia's future and your hopes Ulric but you still aided the rebellion first. You put Alestia before yourself.
Pro, at the risk of death and discovery you still went to the enemy's lair completely alone and came out on top... I never should have questioned your loyalty.
I'll make it up to you both personally tonight, give me some time to sulk and recover and you will be repaid with as much devotion as I can gather.
I don't deserve your forgiveness but have faith I will better myself, for you and all of Alestia. I don't even know why I thought you could be the moles, you've only ever been loyal and dear to me.
I shouldn't have treated you this way...If I don't say it enough then allow me to say it now, openly.
You are both incredibly dear to me. Without you two I would not be here, you dragged me into this mess and by Gods you'll see me through to the end of it.
Cracked smiles show from Pro and Ulric as they start to sweat, Blur humms amused now seeing them actually start to be nervous. Their acting skills truly were something to be amazed by but now with them both cleared of suspicion it was nice to see his friends letting their guards down, seemingly embarrassed at Blur's praise, apology and promises.
Blur: Now you two deserve some rest, I'm sure the others could do with a good story and I've got my hands full with Sovy here. Feel free to help upstairs or report to Damek for instruction. By now he's probably charmed Vivien into his new alliance.
Blur stands up from the food crate and walks over to Sovy who is grinning in his usual sinister way making his eyes red, a shudder goes through Blur's body as he realises he's not grinning at Blue Blur, but instead Ulric and Pro who haven't moved looking back at the prisoner in their neighbouring cell.
Blur: Something the matter?
Sovy: Oh Monarch, you have done so well at being fooled. You were very close to discovering your moles and then you set them free.
How disappointing.
Blur gulps looking to Sovy and then back to his friends in a double take, their nervous posture remaining on edge practically screaming the guilt in their hearts.
Blur: Guys?... Ooooooh... oh fuck me.
He's serious, isn't he?... Can you two decide in which order and in which direction I'm going to be shafted?
Ulric: I want to stay here Monarch, listen to what he has to say. Fix whatever damage he does.
Pro: Me too Blur. We won't let Sovy ruin our names. Our friendship
Our trust.
Blur watches his two friends sensing no danger from them yet the trust he just regained is ripped from under him, he nods over to the cells as Ulric and Pro groan moving back to their previous positions obediently. Blur moves with each step they take ensuring he's guarding the exit again, patting for the crates behind him he punches through the lid tearing a wine bottle out with savage twists and turns.
Blur: Something tells me I'm going to be here a while aren't I? You bastards have some perfect timing you know?!
Just as he says this the ship lurches forward as a sign the rebels are on their way out of Alarinthia, relieved smiles come from Ulric and Pro proud to have escaped without any significant problems, Blur looks to Sovy with a snarl upset that the dragon has turned the tables of friendship in every possible direction.
Blur: Well get on with your news Sovy. This better be good because I promise someone is walking the plank today and right now I have an itch to kill Grand Inquisitors. Don't suppose you know any Sovy?
Sovy: Be careful what you wish for Monarch. It's a slippery road you're walking and that flippant tongue will do you no favours here.
Blur quiets down as he pulls the cork out of the wine bottle taking a big swig of medication with a satisfying burp, his tired mind letting his standards drop while the painful headache and nose reduce to a duller throb.
Blur: Get on with it Sovy. I'm listening to YOU now. Use my time wisely.
Sovy: Well let's go back to the beginning shall we? I don't know why I'm here before you to be entirely truthful. But considering the circumstances it felt like...the right thing to do.
Ulric speaks up wanting swift answers, he holds the cell bars tightly between his knuckles tension working its way into tone, his fists popping from pressure and going a whiter shade than his fur.
Ulric: What circumstances?
Sovy: Back during the attack on your headquarters in Mazeo my orders were clear, kill the Monarch and return the Blade of Exodus. A simple task yet I failed in both objectives...
The Triumvirates were not pleased and I was punished quite severely.
Blur nods following along feeling the blade grow heavier on his back, his fight with Sovy and how he was shown mercy flickering through his mind.
Blur: You saw the Monarchy didn't you? Touching the blade when it was under my control... shocked us as well, it's why I'm still alive, isn't it?
Sovy nods as if he's picturing the painful memory, his voice a little hollower now as he bends his head with a slow blink.
Sovy: You are correct Blur. I didn't know what they were but the Triumvirates had clearly been lying to me, as such my objective to kill you was voided... when I returned empty handed the Triumvirates exiled me.
Pro: I've yet to hear anything worth the air you're breathing Ex Inquisitor.
Sovy: Well if you would stop interrupting you impetuous mutt...
Now this will be complicated but the truth often is Monarch. I still consider myself a servant to the Triumvirate... but Halin?
I want destroyed.
I am not here at the Triumvirate's request, not this time anyway. As you can see I've broken my cuffs if didn't want to be here do you think this door would stop me?
What I'm offering, is this Monarch.
All the information I have about the Triumvirates is yours, let it aid you on your attack of Balteus, in return you will aid me in killing Halin.
Pro: Why are you offering this? You're talking about bringing down the people you say you still serve?
Sovy: Taking down the Triumvirates would naturally lead Halin to confrontation and I want him to suffer, he betrayed me and the need for revenge is too great to ignore. Something the Monarch seems to share with me wouldn't you say?
Blur: Stay focused Sovy, we're not friends and don't give these two fire to burn you with. And cut out the fucking whining too, you've got all the charm of a rotting teddy bear by a graveside.
Originally Sovy smiles with his tusks sticking out in delight as Blur wasn't entirely stealthy about changing the topic and defending Sovy. Even agreeing with him in silence although Blur's anger took a hammer to dragon charisma making Ulric snort at the face being wipped off Sovy.
Ulric and Pro clearly detect where the Monarch wants to place his affiliations, rubbing their necks nervously they give serious consideration to what happens if Blur believes Sovy over them.
Pro: Ughh ok so let's say we take down Halin, then what? You'd be next in line for Grand Inquisitor and just stab us in the back, we take care of your problem and deliver ourselves into your waiting hands.
Sovy laughs loudly broadly mocking the husky and looking at him with bone-chilling glee.
Sovy: You say it as if people aren't capable of playing both sides Pro.
Either way, I honestly don't know what I'd choose, all I know is revenge. Once I have that we'll see what choices I have when the time comes.
The uncertainty in his voice filled the air, Sovy truly had no idea what his future held and what he wanted to do once Halin had paid the price for his betrayal.
Pro: You don't actually expect there to be an easy choice do you? You've served the Triumvirates your entire life!
A dark shadow grew across Sovys face as he balled his hand into a fist averting his gaze in a quieter voice, there might as well be an entirely different world at the end of his cell for he couldn't tear his eyes away the from darkness. The sounds of the ocean crashing upon the nearby shore reminded Sovy of home.
Sovy: Not my entire life Pro.
I was welcomed with open arms when I was young, foolish and broken. They promised to heal my wounds yet now they inflict the same cuts.
I will not let history repeat itself.
Blur notices Ulric's weight shift looking at Sovy with a longing look, the history of these two coming across from just a cursory glance and reminding Blur of their first meeting during his vision of Valinorths destruction.
Pro: Is that meant to mean something to any of us?
Blur: Pro!
The husky jolts at the verbal lashing unsure when he wondered into this particular minefield, he gulps remaining silent unsure how to deal with whatever just triggered the Monarch and Sovy's surprise was warming, a soft nod in appreciation was gifted to Blur.
Sovy: You don't need to know it, for it to make sense. Emotional intelligence is not something you're...proficient with. Let me tell my story and then judge me yes?
Sovy humms pleased at his sense of humour as Pro rolls his eyes at the quip, Blur nods to the husky with a soft smile thanking him for cooling off on the offensive questioning.
Shifting his weight Sovy leans closer to the bars holding Blur's gaze with his folded arms, he wanted to tell but his instincts kept him comforted and safe.
Sovy: Onto matters of the Triumvirates, if you're serious about taking them out then you will need to find your way to their chambers. I've never seen them leave, at first, I thought they were guarding something or hiding.
But not any more.
I think they're bound to that room, their artefact. I wish I could describe it better but... whatever it is, it scares me. Like it sucks in all hope, happiness.
I don't know what it is at the back of their chamber but I believe it's related to the Monarchy, maybe even another spirit idol. Or it could be their source of power.
Whatever it is, they guard it constantly. So focus its destruction Monarch and turn their order into chaos.
Blur sits back rubbing his face tiredly suppressing a yawn, his memories recalled the dream encounters with this powerful idol and its irresistible lure.
Pro: A spirit idol guarded in their chamber...do you think we're looking at some kind of... I don't know... high-security prison for the Monarchy?
No, this is nonsense, they've been hunting down the idols for destruction no way they would keep one just lying around in their castle. I'm not believing this. Whatever he's up to it's not worth listening to Monarch.
Blur's low growl was enough to tell Pro to shut it, apparently, the husky couldn't stand staying silent when there's blood in the water and the possibility of losing the trust of Monarch. Pro lets out a shaky sigh anxious and looks to Ulric a cool level headed master who has seen his every attempt at defence, defusing and divulging backfire. Now his strategy of staying silent seems to be working.
Blur: I'll be danmed. The truth comes out... I wasn't sure at first, I've always been told that visions are never fully accurate but this idol you're talking about. I believe you.
I've been there.
Ulric: What do you mean you've been there? The Triumvirates chamber?
Pro: When were you going to tell us this?
Sovy scoffs at the surprise from Ulric and Pro speaking in a firm captivating voice drawing the others into his story. Blur's sudden scrutiny from his cell friends ignited a burst of energy in the Monarch.
Sovy: I'm not finished yet.
I recommend a direct assault into their chamber taking both the Triumvirates and their dark idol out at the same time, Alestia would be yours in one strike and Halin would be nowhere else but at the very doors of the chamber.
As for Halin in particular he's a curiosity, never have I seen a more perfect soldier.
He has a cunning mind, immaculate stealth and is quite deadly with a blade. Combine these with unwavering loyalty to his masters... and no friendship or bargaining will come between him and the Triumvirates.
Killing him will be your only way through him Monarch, don't believe any compromises he tells you, he sold me out immediately after promising he wouldn't tell the Triumvirates of my failure.
I should have expected it honestly, he's been blessed by the Triumvirates and that blade binds him to their rule for eternity.
He isn't their only mindless thrall mind you, you've seen the suits of armour in your headquarters?
The blade you carry created these beings Monarch and if the Triumvirates ever get their hands back on it, your rebellion would be crushed under an ocean of guards. This I can guarantee.
Sadly the Triumvirates have learned from their past mistakes, Halin was my apprentice and they wanted me to teach him everything I knew. They did this because they feared I'd follow in my previous master's defection.
I hate to admit they could possibly be right to have seen it coming and ensured it could never happen again.
I can't believe my path mirrors the previous Grand Inquisitor, an exile and a defector.
What a sorry sight.
Betrayed by Halin and the Triumvirates it's almost comical if it wasn't so diabolical.
But that's my story Monarch, my offer to you. The true nature of Halin and possibly a weakness to Triumvirates, easily tracked and trapped.
Sovy humms stroking his arm with half-lidded eyes giving only a small amount of conviction to the words that follow.
Sovy: With your blade, you could even set Halin free from his curse, he'd have the freedom to choose his allegiance. Ofcourse this isn't what I want.
A sickening low chuckle oozes with evil as Sovy lifts his head with his teeth snarling and his eyes blood red.
Sovy: I'd prefer it if you'd let me kill him, destroy their puppet. This is all I ask in return for my information, I won't get in your way when the Triumvirate's end comes and if you grant me this request I'd only be in your debt.
And I always settle my debts Blue Blur.
Blur stands up walking at long paces with the bottle in hand battling the urge to down it and throw it at someone, his mind raced with the new information if he could let Sovy kill Halin. Seemingly a slave to the Triumvirate's will rather than a bitter enemy.
This dark idol also played on Blur's mind having no idea what it is or its importance, if the Triumvirates truly did create Alestia maybe this idol could be related. What else could be destroyed or even gained depending on the idol's fate? Shaking these pointless thoughts he knew he'd only know until actually facing the danmed thing.
Turning back to Sovy the blue and white wolf sighs taking another sip of his wine with a shudder as he bumps his nose inadvertently.
Sovy: So the question is, do you trust me, Monarch?
Blur burps again holding his muzzle embarrassed as Sovy looks bewildered, Ulric snorts again louder failing to hide a delighted laugh, his stealthy approach finally failing as Blur's glare turns to him.
Blur: Think that's funny? Watch this!
Sovy I implicitly trust you. Everything you've said has made sense and matches my visions.
Ulric immediately grows quiet shocked to see Blur trust an enemy so willingly, seemingly to just spite Ulric and childishly keep up barriers. The bigger wolf couldn't understand why Blur was acting like this, sure there was tension between them but this was borderline wreckless.
Sovy: Gooooood, because I have two more things to broach, and now I have your trust you have no reason to doubt the validity of my claims.
Saving the best to last we finally come on to the topic of dishonesty in your ranks. I can't wait to see your reaction.
Blur: Ah yes I nearly forgot... of for the love of... Noooo ofcourse I didn't forget you dolts! Get on with it Sovy or all of you go down together.
Sovy: Well? Shall I tell him or you two?
Silence followed as Blur's patience was tested itching to know all he could about his friends and the charming enemy, Ulric's heart thundered as he stepped forward out of his cell looking to Blur who failed to hide his gulp, sweat starting to form on his hands as Sovy stands smirking with signature delight.
Ulric: I'll go first. My blade stands with the rebellion now and it always will, I can promise you that Monarch but it wasn't always like that.
Sovy is trying to dig up a long-dead past before your time, he hopes to harm our trust with ancient information but please see me for who I am now, who I've always been to you. A friend. An ally. Someone you can trust to protect your life no matter what happens.
What Sovy is trying to do is so textbook, hell I wrote the bloody book. I ought to know he'd gain your trust with a few interesting facts and then attack. He wants to use my subterfuge and past to muddy my current loyalty.
I know you can't outrun the past but let my actions during the coliseum speak for me. I chose Alestia over my personal beliefs and there was no guarantee you'd take my side. How many people do you know would abandon their dreams of a lifetime? That is my loyalty, Monarch.
Sovy: Delay delay delay, same old tactics Ulric. You still haven't changed, how disappointing. Monarch, please throw this fool away.
Ulric and Blur both shout in sync surprising each other as Blur strikes the bars of Sovy's cell with the bottle, glass shattering everywhere making Sovy and Pro duck.
Blur Ulric: No!
Blur: I would never throw him away!
No matter what he does or has done. I will face whatever two-sided past he has and I will cut it down to the whites of its eyes.
He will know my name and it shall echo through time long after his crimes have faded to a dim memory!
Blur's breath crackles deeply with his muzzle wheezing and twitching from the twisting pain of his nose, blood spilling over into his teeth snarlling vividly and defending Ulric like his life depended on it. In his head, he'd meant to say all of his friends were defended but the moment had passed.
Silence followed as Blur stumbled backwards fighting with himself to back off, Sovy was quite shocked to see such a state and stalked the Monarch noting how he ranted to himself. Blur wasn't being objective and the stolen glances from Ulric blazed with pain at his cute face.
Blur: Just tell me for fucks sake... I can't stand waiting.
As Blur rests his head on the table waiting for whatever dreadful news is coming a weight lifts from his back making him jolt in fright. His stool flew backwards at his hasty movement feeling the Blade of Exodus missing and only Sovy could wield such a deadly weapon.
Looking at Sovy in his sparkling cell he is brushing the glass away with scowls towards the Monarch, weaponless, a soft metal tapping from Ulric's cell as he holds Exodus in his hand inspecting it from nostalgia. A mixture of fright and relief fills him as the blade responds to his instincts.
Ulric: Grand Inquisitor Ulric no longer at Triumvirates service, huh... still too balanced.
The loathing and hatred carried in Ulric's voice were clear as was Blur's nervousness swallowing the realisation in one big gulp. A soft sad whine as Blur lowers his tail in shock letting his ears fall flat unable to see anything other than an enemy where Ulric once stood.
Blur shakes his head speechless as Ulric speaks up claiming the opportunity.
Ulric: If that's all you have then your plans to break our trust have failed Sovy.
Sovy: I never said I was out to hurt you. Just providing knowledge to the Monarch. After all. If he doesn't take me...
You can go in my place, you know their halls and walls more than me. Master.
The smugness in Sovys voice grates Blur's gears yet also finds a disgusting comfort in them, running a paw through his fur he goes over to the crate stealing another bottle and smudging blood along his neck, cheek and lips.
Sovy: After all, it's up to the Monarch if this information hurts or heals your trust. Another Exodus wielder can help turn the tides of war wouldn't you say?
Ulric: No more secrets Blur, I promise. I am on your side. I always will be. For Alestia.
Ulric offers the blade through his cell bars placing it on the floor and then sitting on his hands to ensure Blur feels protected, the silence from the Monarch was starting to worry him but the shock was still plain to see. Slowly picking up the blade Blur grunts something of acceptance and places the blade where it belongs.
Pulling the first of what will surely be many corks Blur takes a swig of his heavy bottle and looks at Pro, the time the husky had been dreading was here. Slow timid steps followed as he moved to what felt like centre stage.
Pro: Ermmm so... th-the beginning, let's start from there. My parents abandoned me, they never died in the occupation like I tell everybody and the only thing I've ever wanted to know was why. - why - did they leave me?
No matter how far and hard I searched I found nothing... nothing! I don't know who I am and I'm desperate for answers only they could give. And one day, the Triumvirates reached out, my last resort in hopes of finding them only drew in the God's attention.
Shame started to pour through his words as he shrunk into himself trying to hide from the pain, his gaze barely at Blur's feet unable to look anyone in the eye.
Pro: They said they knew where my parents were but they wanted something in exchange... my information, at first it was harmless truths just confirming rumours...
But over time... they...
They wanted more and I gave it, so many secrets, so many foiled plans and out manoeuvring and I got nothing in return... I promise it wasn't long until I quit until I saw sense and what they truly were!
Sovy: And yet the damage you did was incomprehensible, wasn't it?
Pro: Ye...yeah...
Sovy: Say it. What was the last thing you leaked to the Triumvirate's Pro? What was your last mission mole?
Pro: The Triumvirates Church, our HQ, the Tunnels...everything. Our perfect hideout with no chance of being discovered.
Unless they were tipped off.
Sovy half expected Blur to fly off the handle yet he sat there, drinking, waiting. Judging. Maybe this was better than Sovy thought. The psychological damage this was doing to the rebellion would be great. Maybe even enough to win back the Triumvirates, if he chooses to.
Sensing a kill was coming Sovy struck with force reaping the fear from the husky and driving home his crimes.
Sovy: And there's the truth, the bloody.
Awful.
Truth.
Had you kept quiet all that blood, all that death? Would have been avoided. Your hands are redder than mine and you can't wash it away with blood of the Triumvirates as trade.
You are responsible for all of the dying, all of the violence. It's your fault Pro.
Pro: NO it's not true! I quit, they lied to me, and they never knew anything about my past. All they wanted was someone, gullible, mindless and was already crushed to serve them.
A soft buzzing shakes Sovy to his core hearing Pro echo words similar to his own past, how the Triumvirates used those in disadvantaged situations to bend their will upon the weak. The dragon's voice caught in his throat unable to seal Pro's fate and instead shifted his gaze to Blur.
Blur: I don't how to take this...
The voice of an empty man responds to Sovys face and Pro's heavy eye, the room was avoid of hope and light feeling only darkness in their souls.
Pro: Please Monarch see me for who I am now, I've proven my loyalty just like Ulric! I risked a no greater sacrifice and placed my life on the line for the good of the Alestia.
The rebellion is thriving because of my actions in the coliseums, nobody else could have done what I did and there was no guarantee to my safety you said so yourself.
Conflict raged across Blur's face with gulp after gulp of the wine, resting it on his temple he prayed to the bottle for guidance crunching his body up at the pain in his chest. The urge to weep was a constant battle to subdue and the screaming in his head didn't help... the death screams of fellow rebels during the attack.
Pro's voice was on the verge of a very deep pit fearing the friendship he might lose forever, the family he's spent his childhood growing up with potentially vanishing replaced by his selfish crimes. He leans out of his cell desperate to make Blur see the anguish on the huskies face.
Pro: I've made up for my crimes Monarch. All the lives lost have been repaid with extras to spare. The rebellion is at its strongest peak, the Alarinthian alliance I helped secure will lead us to victory and I can live with that. I just... I want to live it with the people I love.
Blur: Do you know what?... What's really fucking sad here is that I don't even have the fucking energy to pretend that I already knew...
Which is for the best because I'm going to need all of my fucking energy to rip all of your fucking bodies to bits with my bare hands-
AND SELL OFF YOUR HEADS AS TROPHIES TO A FUCKING NORMAL PERSON!
Blur snarls letting off flames and unleashing a torrent of abuse at anyone who has the nerves to keep eye contact with him, storming over to the far end of the room he picks out another 'medicine' bottle with meticulous care, slowly unscrewing the cork he pours himself a much-needed drink from the expensive bottle. One sip, two sip... a long sigh and then a third sip straight from the bottle.
Ulric: Blue Blur, please...
In response Blur slams his fist against the wall with a loud bang, silence takes hold of the cells again concerned with what's going through the wolf's mind. Slowly losing control Blur screams slamming the wall repeatedly in outrage trying to break a hole through the hull.
Blur: WHY DOES IT HAVE BE THIS, AGAIN!
Gods dammit Pro! I have you, a sell-out. A traitor... a moron swept up in the Triumvirate's lies but worst of all.
You are entitled to that enormous fucking mistake.
Groaning and taking another swig Blur rubs his palms feeling the sting from the walls rebuttal, they throb angrily at him. Turning around the Monarch shoots a withering look at Pro with his eyes searing hot with intense anger.
Blur: You know in another universe you got me killed, you got Damek killed. Fortaime and Valessa KILLED!
The entire fucking rebellion wiped out because of YOU!
...
And you...
Blur's attention turned to Ulric as Pro hung his head in shame and slid his back down against the wall, his feet crunching up the prisoner chains loudly, squinting his eyes holding back tears fearful to show any more weakness to the enraged leader.
Blur: What are you scared? Oh, I'm so sorry I scared you.
I won't scare you ok? I'll just explain what I'm going to fucking do to you.
I'LL TAKE YOUR FUCKING BOLLOCKS, FUCKING RIP THEM OFF AND FUCKING PAINT SAD PUPPY DOG EYES ON THEM... AND SITCH THEM ONTO A FUCKING SOCK AND USE THAT AS YOUR MOUTH PEICE!
Pro shakes terrorised by Blur's inferno of anger turning his blood to hellfire as the wolf slowly turns back to Ulric having seen Pro shrink in fear not making a sound.
Blur: Grand Inquisitor Ulric... fuck sakes.
You're going to a prison cell in whatever hole I can find, you'll have a roof over your head, three meals a day and regular sex. Who knows you might even work out a bit. Fucking bastard's sake!
I'll probably stay in shape purely by the energy I'd spend in pitying you!
Blur holds his head in his hands unable to summon a calm to stop his wraith, Ulric can see a thousand words from Blur's eyes as the fury of the Monarch burned in Ulric's heart knowing his relationship with Blur would be beyond toasted.
Blur: You really are the embodiment of betrayal today, Jesus fucking Christ both of doing this to me, here and now as I feel like shit! You're both perfect for each other...complete and utter bastards!
Blur's words were laced with exhaustion and heartbreak, two of his friends, hell closer to family now had left their daggers in his back again and again. He wished that he knew how to deal with his emotions, to show how strong he was yet instead a broken man who lost the entire world stood before his two traitors.
Blur: If I didn't know any better I'd swear you're personally trying to fuck with me. And now look where we are...
Faced with a decision to throw you away into the nearest prison never to be seen again...or, maybe. Just maybe there is a slim chance that you walk out of this room with your heads attached and a weight lifted from your shoulders.
Stepping closer Blur pulls Ulric and Pro close, practically dragging them to their feet not wanting to witness the bloodshot whites of Blurs, they both gulp knowing their stories were about to end, about to be let go and left in the darkness.
Blur: If you two ever lie to me.
EVER EVEN THINK! YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH IT.
Seething hot breaths shake from Blur's fruity snout, his teeth stained red and death itself swirling in his soul, the promise of a whisper dancing from his tongue trapping Ulric and Pro into a blood pact.
Blur: And I would rain down upon you so hard, that you would have to be reassembled by fucking air crash investigators. Do not. Fuck with me.
Slowly backing off letting Ulric and Pro release the breaths they were holding nearly turning grey from fright they both nod violently understanding the repercussions, they didn't dare ask what an air crash possibly was for the Monarch's rage knew no bounds and made any random words sound terrifying, the walls of reality thinning ever so slightly for Blur's scorching temper.
Blur: You could have trusted me! None of this would have happened if you two didn't try to lie your way through a victory...
Taken aback by Blur's voice-cracking voice Ulric and Pro share a side glance concerned with what's happening now, what was Blur doing? The choice was clear, they were both liars and traitors. Betrayers. Now the raging wolf had toned down to a simmering sad mutt letting his ears turn away no longer on attack mode.
Blur: I love you both, you are my family and do you seriously think that I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?
I'm sorry for scaring you both...but I needed to put the fear of God in you.
We will survive this, together. You have both proven yourselves tenfold to the rebellion, but you're on thin ice with ME.
That being said... you are forgiven always and forever... forgiven.
Blur takes both Ulric's and Pro's paw giving them a small squeeze and smile seeing them release the fear eating them. The worry from their facelifted at the low yet soft voice of Blur. Absolution and apologies rolled into one smoothing caressing tone.
Blur: You are completely and pardoned of your mistake Pro, risking your life in the coliseums and ensuring the rebellion has an army bigger than we ever dreamed. You've paid your punishment.
Ulric...oh the amount of apologies I need to give you.
Blur strokes Ulric's chin reliving the moments each strike hit his chin repeatedly, anger boiling over into revenge. Ulric grabs the paw with a slight blush as Blur's face twitches at the pain in his paws.
Blur: Your past is exonerated, we may not be innocent but what happened here today was done in the pursuit of justice, you've promised me no more lies and I believe you.
But know this, if you cross me again I wouldn't survive it. Any and all plans you two have to overthrow nations and swindle elections are done with my full knowledge. Understand?
A tiny hint of humour comes through Blur's warming words, today's problems taxed the Monarch's mind but finally having his friends back and free from their shackles of the past has been worth the pain.
Ulric: From this day forward we forge a new path, a better friendship... and some anger management techniques.
We feared losing the rebellion its chance at an opportunity of incredible power, we couldn't risk it escaping us but what's done is done. With the understanding we have of each other only pleasant days are bound. Honestly, I had no idea we could make you or anyone else feel such a burden.
There's more I want to say but not here...
Ulric nods over to Sovy as Blur smiles understanding his concern, looking at Pro the husky was clearly upset at Blurs berating as tears slid down fluffy cheeks, puffy red eyes hold Blurs as the Monarch whines and softly hugged Pro, the other holding him tightly fearing he almost lost a dear friend.
Pro: I...I don't know what to say.
Blur strokes Pro's back as the husky sniffs and sobs through his words, Blur glances at Ulric who gets the sign and moves off a little way giving them some space.
Blur: Hey it's ok, we lost ourselves but we found each other now. Looking at you is like looking into a mirror, there's rage there, guilt, solitude all like me. But that's over now Pro.
Pro: Is it? We opened Pandora's fucking box as soon as we had your complete trust and then we throw it away. We deserve silence, we should be dead for what we've done.
Blur: No never, I won't allow death to stop me. You've had to live with this for a while and I can't imagine it's been easy but now we can share the burden together.
I don't want to go on this journey without you besides me. You are very dear to me and I will help whenever and wherever you need me.
We can't change the past Pro but we can control our future and... your future will be complicated but always and forever paved with the lives you saved by sacrifice. The Triumvirates don't stand a chance.
Pro sniffs and holds Blurs closer, any tighter and he'd break Blur's ribs yet he doesn't complain holding his hurt friend letting Pro settle, sharp inhales and shaking slowly subsides as Pro regains a sense of composure. While Pro may be living with a broken heart it's better than no heart at all. Letting go of Blur the husky wipes away his tears and takes a deep breath.
Sovy: My my I am surprised Monarch. So many little emotions I lost count, caring is not an advantage in war, one day you'll risk your life for a lesser man and that will be the end of your resistance.
Blur: Ulric, Pro... get out and leave me alone with him. Ensure nobody disturbs us.
Ulric: Monarch? That's not a clever idea, Sovy shouldn't be left alone with you.
Blur:... Trust me Ulric.
Moments pass as Ulric nods softly swallowing his objections, Pro walks over and glances back to Sovy with a silent warning to behave or else.
Pro: We'll be just outside Blur... don't be too long ok?
Blur: No longer than an hour I promise.
Humming in agreement Pro flashes a thumbs up and wiggles his ears to the stairs asking Ulric to follow, climbing the stairs with deep breaths releasing the tension of the room they lean to each other whispering.
Ulric: What's an air crash?
Pro: I don't know and I don't want to know. Just keep walking, Howl can go in there if Blur kicks off again.
Leaving Blur only with Sovy who has finally finished shifting glass from cell into a small pile, he can't do much about the wine soaking through his fur but he was far more interested in Blur's next steps.
Walking to the far end of the room again Blur rummaged through crates taking a new bottle of wine, a canteen of juice and a small basket of fresh food. He kicks his stool over preparing an area to sit next to Sovy who simply watches through the cell bars curious as to what the Monarch is up to.
Rolling the two drinks to the dragon and carefully holding out the basket Sovy takes the offering from Blur with a suspicious look, the wolf heads back to get his own opened bottle and kicks back with a contented sigh, another sip of a job well done.
Blur: Thank you for helping Sovy.
Sovy squinted his eyes trying to detect the lie yet it seemed Blur was genuine, humming surprised with a raised eyebrow the dragon sat a little far away inspecting his food.
Sovy: You're welcome? But why, why thank me? What I said could have torn your friends apart. I was certain you'd tear down those two liars.
Blur: Don't sell them short...we're family now. They're my pressure point and now we're on the understanding of how much we mean to each other. They vowed to a better future and they wouldn't dare risk our friendship again.
I will always be there for them and that's because of you, you made me realise I needed them so much. What they did was wrong but... it is what it is. When all else fails we will have each other now and I can live with that.
I might die tomorrow and...that's fine.
Sovy listened intently as he sniffed the juicy sampling its sweet aroma, Mazeo apple juice washed through his system making him smile softly a disgusting luxury unnecessarily sweet and well crafted.
Sovy: Monarch... I don't know what you're playing at but I know one thing, don't say you're fine, because I know what that means, looking sad when you think no one can see you. When your never just...'fine'.
Blur: Then we understand each other. I will kill to protect my family and nobody will stand in my way. I'll tell you this now I've made up my mind about you.
I want you to join my journey even if the others don't so tomorrow... focus on winning them over, not me.
You are not alone in being harmed by the Triumvirates, their scars are everywhere but. No further. I will make them pay for all the pain they've inflicted and I want to see you free from their shadow.
My leadership is undisputed but if you cannot win over the others... I don't know if I'm strong enough to walk over their desires. I choose the future for them because I don't know what mine will be. But under all of that gruff and sneer, I see another spirit unsure of his fate.
What I'm saying is this, make my life easier alright?
I will do my best to make yours easier in turn. We needn't be enemies now you know the truth of the Monarchy, me...everything.
That's all I want you to know. Think about it, Sovy. Maybe tonight my visions will tell me what you need before you even know yourself.
Blur chuckles to himself slowly growing tips with his freely talking tongue laying his cards on the table without a care for clever games.
Blur: Whatever happens going forward, I want to be there for you. You're not alone anymore, you can make a difference to end this war tomorrow...imagine that.
Stopping the war tomorrow.
Throughout the conversation Blur had steadily drained his wine bottle until the last sip turned dry, Sovy didn't say anything hating the appeal Blur has talking his way into an uneasy friendship. Why does the wolf trust him when only meer hours ago swords were drawn at his presence, was reforging Blurs family truly enough to make the wolf trust him?
As Sovy's response turned to silence Blur hummed in happiness finally feeling the effects of his self-medication as the constant thrumming of pain started to dull, taking Sovy's conflict as a sign to leave Blur picked up a few more bottles and headed towards the stairs.
Blur: Sleep on your future Sovy. In the morning you'll be facing a brand new world. Sweet dreams.
The dragon felt irritated by Blur's genuine offer, the illogical trust formed and pure emotions burned in Sovys heart as he grunted in response goodnight. The stairs creaked as Blur left him to his thoughts unsure of what to do now. His alliance with Blur was assured but how could he win over Ulric, Pro, Damek and the others who seemed cautious of the Triumvirate's puppet? The rocking of the ship grew and fell helping his mind focus.
Upon opening the hatch Blur saw literally everyone was eavesdropping on the conversation with a miffed look from Damek. Blur wondered just how loud he had been and from the looks of Alex's pirates who roared in laughter, it gave Blur a clear idea every threat screamed through the deck plates.
