Chapter 1

Sookie

In the corner of the room, water dripped through the ceiling. Each drop making a steady beat at it fell into the rusting bucket. When I had first noticed the dripping, it had annoyed me. The constant drip, drip, drip had kept me awake; it stole my sleep, keeping me from my dreams.

My dreams seemed to be the only place I found any respite. For a few short hours, I could forget the nightmare that had taken over my every day and I could picture myself stretched out on a chair on Gran's lawn, soaking in the afternoon rays. Sometimes I found myself sitting in Gran's kitchen, a piece of pecan pie on a plate in front of me. Gran would be sat to my left, Tara to my right. Occasionally, even Jason would be there, scoffing down a second or third helping.

But it was never long until they would disappear. Reality would come crashing in and wake me. Most often it was the sound of the basement door creaking that would do it. The last glimpses of the sun would slide down beyond the horizon and he would wake. The steps would groan beneath his weight. The door's hinges would cry as he pushed it open. And the first place he would go was down the hall to me.

This night I'd seemed to get the lucky end of the deal. I had woken up to the rain outside, my body protesting as I sat myself up and looked out the window. I'd been surprised to realise that I hadn't woken up when he had risen, and he had also not come to see me.

Not one night had ever passed without him coming to see me. And there'd been nothing I could do to stop him. I'd given up pretending to sleep when he'd wake; a few times I tried to fake it, hoping he would leave me be. But he would just laugh. My heartbeat along with my breathing gave me away.

Instead, I just tried to get it over with. He always liked to start his evenings with a drink. My blood was what perked him to life, or so he said. But he couldn't take it from my wrist, that wasn't intimate enough. No, he liked my throat and sometimes my inner thigh.

Once he'd gotten his fill he'd leave for a few hours. I always tried to get some more sleep, but my mind found it difficult to rest not knowing when he'd come back. A few times he was gone all evening, not coming back until just before the sun would rise. The worst nights were the ones when he only left to get me food. He would return within the hour, give me my sustenance and then spend the rest of the evening taking whatever he wanted from me.

But it had been hours, and nothing. The water continued to drip in the corner as the rain outside fell heavily. The house was silent and cold, making me huddled beneath a thin blanket that he'd left with me. I had no idea what could have happened to make him leave without waking me, without him taking what he wanted from me. He would no doubt wished to have added to the number of scars he'd left on me.

I glanced down at the metal chain around my ankle. The first time I'd woken up in the house, I found myself on the mattress on the floor. My ankle bound by a chain that was long enough that I could go to the bathroom on my own, but not out of the bedroom door. The other end of the chain was locked around an old radiator below the window, I'd tried multiple times to fiddle with both the lock and the radiator to try and find a way to get something to come loose with no success. The only thing that would work would be the key, and that stayed with him.

I closed my eyes and rolled my neck. The aches in my body were becoming so normal that I didn't seem to notice it so much anymore. I was used to my bruises having bruises, to my body screaming at me not to move after he'd been more than rough with me. But that seemed to be my every day now. Occasionally he'd force his blood down my throat, not wanting any long-term damage. He'd also made sure I understood that with his blood in my system, I could never hide from him.

It seemed for the worst part, that the room I was stuck in would be the room I would die in.

The rumble of an engine broke through the pattering of the rain. I used the wall to haul myself up and shuffled over to the window, my chain dragging across the floor. A car drove through the trees and pulled up beside the porch of the house. The passenger side door flung open, and he stepped out.

The 'he' I have referred to was William Compton, or Bill as he insisted. I first met Bill when he'd shown up in my hometown. He'd come into the Bar and Grille I worked at with the intention to get to know the locals of the town he now wanted to call home. Well, that was the bullshit line he'd fed me. My naive ass had fallen for it, hook, line and sinker.

Vampires had revealed themselves to the world a few years before; it had become known as the Great Revelation. There had been an attempt to integrate vampires with humans, and it hadn't been exactly smooth. Plenty of humans and vampires were against the integration of the two species, and plenty of us hadn't really cared. I had liked to believe that I was open-minded. I would happily serve a vampire like I would a human. So, when Bill had shown up, the first vampire I'd ever met since we'd learned about them, I became a little enamoured.

Bill had come across as a southern gentleman, he'd been polite and sweet, and his mind provided me blissful silence. Something I had never really been able to find in my whole life.

I believe that I'd been able to read people's minds my whole life. Ever since I could remember, I knew what everyone was thinking without even trying. I'd terrified my parents when they realised, they couldn't hide anything, I'd scared off any potential kids that could have been friends and found myself rather isolated for the most part. I had tried to be normal, and as I got older, I did find that by putting in the effort I could keep myself from invading people's minds, but when my emotions were all over the place, I couldn't do anything to keep them out.

Bill had been a welcome reprieve from all the noise. We could have whole conversations, and his mind was as silent as the grave. I now realised that was what drew me to him. But I allowed myself to get so caught up, that by the time I realised what was happening it was too late.

The front door swung open and crashed against the wall, making me jump, as Bill marched inside. From the driver's side of the car a woman climbed out. She followed Bill inside but at a much slower pace.

I stayed still, not wanting to alert the female to my presence if she hadn't already noticed me, but her voice floated down the hall.

"So, do I get a taste?" Her voice was soft, somewhat sweet, but it made my skin crawl.

"She is mine," growled Bill.

The woman scoffed. "She may be yours, Billy, but I made you and I believe I taught you to share."

"You taught me many things Lorena, sharing was not one of them."

"Oh, but we shared so well, don't you remember. Our time together are some of my fondest memories."

"This is different."

"Yes, so you said. She's what? Half-fairy?"

"Less than that. She smells divine, tastes it too, but the only special ability she possesses is that of telepathy."

"And you managed to trick her even though she can read minds?"

"Apparently not vampire minds, one of the things that drew her to me."

Initially I had believed that vampire minds were silent to me. It wasn't until Bill kissed me for the first time that I realised I could find my way inside. At first, I was confused. The pieces of his thoughts hadn't made much sense, and I had waved it off. But once I noticed what was happening, I pushed my way inside. It seemed, for Bill at least, physical contact was required. Bill had taken me before I'd told him that little snippet, and now I made sure I would never tell him.

"That was lucky. How did you convince Sophie-Anne to let it all go?"

"A clever lie. Her pet was confused, after all, it had been years since her pet had seen Sookie, so it wasn't hard to make her believe that she truly had just been a strange child."

"And you're sure she sent no one else?"

Bill scoffed. "She may be a Queen, but she's not a clever one."

Lorena sighed. "No, she's doesn't have your brilliant mind." A pleased moan followed her words, and I screwed up my nose.

I stood by the window as I heard the scuffle of their bodies, the sound of clothes being pulled off, and lips smacking together. They both grunted and groaned, snapping at one another as the floors creaked beneath them.

While I had no desire to listen to Bill fuck this female vampire, I was grateful they hadn't made their way to me. But that luck ran out quickly.

It seemed one round wasn't enough for the pair, for the next hour or so I listed to them copulate down the hall. I made my way back onto the mattress and tried to ignore it, but then I heard the footsteps move closer.

I pulled my blanket over me as a few moments later, brown eyes peered into the room. Lorena was only slightly shorter than bill, with brown hair that fell to her shoulders and an old-fashioned pendant around her neck. She held the appearance of what one would describe as well fucked. The only thing she had on, besides her necklace, was a negligee that hide very little.

Lorena tilted her head to the side as she looked me over. "Aren't you as cute as a peach," she said.

Bill walked up behind her and nibbled at her shoulder. "Lorena meet Sookie. Sookie this is Lorena, my maker."

I stared at the woman who had created the monster of my life and said nothing.

Bill smirked against Lorena's shoulder. "She doesn't like to talk much, well, not lately anyway."

Lorena smirked as she turned to look at him. "Don't take away too much of her fight, it's never really fun when they give up completely." She stepped out of Bill's arms and crossed the room. She knelt on the mattress beside me with her hand stretched out. Grabbing the blanket, she pulled it from me.

I shivered as the cold air brushed across my skin. I wanted to pull myself away but there was no escape. Lorena placed her hand on my thigh, smiling as she moved it up and over the bite marks Bill had left behind.

"You always did like to feed from the femoral," she said.

Bill strolled around the mattress and sat down on my other side. He grabbed my forearm, pulling me forward enough that he could sit behind me before pulling me back against his chest. One of his arms wrapped around my chest, holding me still, while his other hand cupped the thigh Lorena wasn't touching.

"You promise not to take too much if I let you?" he asked.

I seized up as I realised, he actually meant to let her feed on me.

Lorena chuckled. "I don't think she wants me too."

Bill pressed his nose into my hair. "I don't really want to share you," he whispered. "But Lorena isn't just anyone."

Lorena crawled forward, lying between my legs.

"She gave me this life." Bill pressed a kiss to the back of my head before lifting his hand to grab my chin. He forced my head to turn to him as Lorena pushed my thighs apart. I couldn't watch her, but I felt her lips against my knee as her fingers ran across my skin.

I clenched my eyes shut and tried to pull my leg away, but I couldn't budge. Lorena grip didn't waver as her tongue slid out to taste my skin.

Bill hummed and stroked his thumb across my cheek. "Relax, Sookie. It will feel good."

Lorena chuckled against my thigh. I heard a small snip, and her sharp fangs joined her tongue against my skin. "Not really," she muttered before she bit down.

The piercing sensation of vampire's fangs changed depending on where the vampire bit down. Bill had explained to me once that a vampire's intention could change the sensation that a human would feel. While the initial bite might sting, vampires could make it pleasurable—most likely why there were so many fang bangers—but they could also do the opposite.

Lorena's bit was harsh. I cried out, unable to hold it in, as her fang buried deep into my flesh along with her nails that gripped my thigh. Bill groaned from behind me as my blood spilled from my artery, and moments later he yanked my head around and sank his fangs into my throat. I whimpered as his grip tightened, but his excitement only grew.

When I had woken that night, I thought luck had been on my side. Bill had left me be, but now I was worse off than before. It wasn't just Bill who was now feeding on me. Lorena was moaning as she tore at my flesh, clearly understanding why Bill had been so hesitant. And I felt fear build in my stomach as to what would happen next.

It wouldn't take long with them both feeding for me to run dry. They could get so caught up that they take too much, and my life would be over. That could probably be the best outcome, and with the way my life was turning out, I wouldn't be that lucky.

Bill stopped feeding first. I felt the room start to wavery as he pulled back. He took deep panting breaths as he licked at my throat, catching any stray drops before he reached out to Lorena. He grabbed her by the hair and tugged. She ignored him at first, until he growled.

Lorena lifted her head, smiling as she licked at her lips. "Darling, she's magnificent." She crawled up between my legs and grabbed my face. She held my head up and stroked my face. "I'm going to enjoy getting to taste every inch of you." She laughed.

Bill grabbed one of Lorena's hands and pulled her to the side. "I gave you a taste, no more."

Lorena pouted at him. "Don't be mean. We can share. We used to be so good at sharing." She reached for Bill, tugging him forward and smashing their lips together.

It was impossible for me to do anything as I became squashed between them. Their hands grasped not only at one another, but at me. I wanted more than anything for them to throw to the side but that wasn't their intention.

It wasn't only Bill's touch on my skin, but Lorena's as well. It was their hands, their teeth, their tongues over every inch. Lorena enjoyed a show when Bill finally wanted what he always wanted from me. I wasn't just a blood bag; my whole body was his to mark in anyway. All I could do was bury my face into the mattress as he pushed himself inside me and wait for it to end.

Eric

The night was becoming boring for me. The humans that had chosen to visit Fangtasia weren't providing the normal level of entertainment that I was after. Pam, my progeny, had found her own enjoyment in our newest dancer Ebony. After finishing her shift, I had watch Pam lure her into a backroom where they had yet to emerge from. Not that it was unsurprising; it had only been two hours.

I rested my chin on my knuckles as I turned my gaze to a pair of two human ladies that were standing around one of the tables. They were smiling and laughing with their heads close together. The shorter of the two was getting plenty of attention from a guy that had wander over to them, but the taller—and in my opinion—better looking girl was there as a Wing Woman. I believe that was the term humans used.

I ran my eyes down the woman's body; she was dressed modestly in a black dress that was skintight—giving a wonderful line of her curves—but had a high neckline. She had black hair that was pulled back into a braid, and her face had what Pam would call minimal makeup. The woman was not what I would call extraordinary, but she was probably the most interesting one before me. And while I could easily choose to forgo blood for the evening, I was feeling a little peckish.

It took a short while before the woman noticed my gaze. It ended up being her friend who nudged her shoulder and nodded in my direction before she looked up. Her cheeks turned red as she looked at me.

The woman turned to her friend and said, "I'm not exactly single, Sherley."

Sherley rolled her eyes. "Brian is a loser. You deserve better. You deserve to be devoured by a vampire."

"I don't know if I should," she protested.

Sherley grabbed her arm. "Alice, that vampire is what every single human in this place is dying for. And you have the opportunity to get your brains fucked out of you."

Alice swallowed. "What if he wants to bite me?"

Sherley smiled widely and giggled. "Then let him. Bitting during sex is wild!"

A willingly participant was always good for my evening. But a human that was untouched by one of my kind was even better. Their reactions were always so amusing.

Alice glanced back in my direction, somewhat shyly. I raised my hand and summoned her over. She swallowed again before stepping away from her table and over to me. I could see how her mind was racing as she walker over, her heart was beating rapidly and continued to do so as she stopped just in front of the stage.

"Hello, Alice," I said.

Her eyes widened. "You know my name?" she asked.

I offered her a small smirk. "I know many things."

Most humans were quick to follow me into my office, but Alice's eyes—and heart—told me to enjoy the chase for a bit. We spoke for a few minutes, Alice bashfully accepting the offer to sit beside me. I took the chance to caress her hand and bring her to a point where she wasn't going to dash away from me like a scared rabbit.

It didn't take long for her heart to start racing not from fear, but desire. Her skin became flushed and her scent, which was very pleasant, became coated with the need to be touched.

I took her at that point towards my office. My office would give us complete privacy for the next few hours while I enjoyed opening Alice's mind to just what she'd been missing out on.

We sat comfortably on my couch as I touched her and removed her underwear. It was clear that her human mate was very poor at satisfying her because she became undone quite quickly after a few minutes. Alice was eager to repay the favour on her knees, even after her small shock when she pulled my cock from my pants, she put in a decent effort with a few required directions. But I wasn't interested in just that, I wanted to taste her properly.

For the effort, my time with Alice wasn't one I would remember all that fondly. She felt good around my cock—nice and tight compared to some others—but her blood wasn't that great. She had a sweet tang to her, but it seemed Alice's emotions to letting a vampire fuck her tainted it. I could taste her guilt for cheating on her boyfriend with me with every thrust. There were a few moments where she was lost in a haze where I could taste the pleasure on my tongue, but by the end I'd lost interest.

I sat on my couch, naked, as Alice lay across the other half panting for breath. I could smell the salt of her tears as she laid there. I rolled my eyes and stood, walking across my room to the bar fridge to kept. I pulled out a bottle of donor blood I kept stock and poured it into a glass which I then placed into the microwave.

Alice sat up, wiping her cheeks and grabbed her panties from the floor. "I'm sorry," she said. "I wasted your time."

I shrugged. "It's not like I don't have plenty of it."

She stood up, straightening her dress. "I…um…"

I held in my chuckle. "Have a good evening, Alice."

She nodded. "You as well."

I sat down at my desk with my warmed blood as she walked out. Leaning back in my chair, I took a sip of my blood. There were few moments when I longed for chaos, it was always messy and—like everything else—got boring after a while, but I could do with a good fight.

Once I'd finished my blood I got dressed. I'd had enough of dealing with humans for the evening, so I sat down and got to the mundane tasks of being a Sheriff. I answered emails, finished reports, and made the required phone calls until Pam knocked on my door. I could feel her frustration flaring.

"Enter," I said.

Pam flung the door open and glared at me.

"Shouldn't you be in a good mood? Or did Ebony turn out to be as dull as my choice this evening?" I asked.

Pam closed the door and huffed. "Ebony is delicious. She has delicious cunt that I thoroughly explored. And her blood is great. And just as she was returning the favour, we were interrupted."

"Do I have to cover up a bloody murder? Have you torn said interrupter apart forcing you to glamor Ebony?" I asked.

Pam scoffed. "I have self-control, thank you. And while I was tempted to remove a head, it's a shifter. He wants to see you."

I frowned. Shifters hated vampires. They avoided us like the plague. Something truly had to been dire for one to come and see me.

"He wouldn't tell me what it was. He just keeps insisting that he's has to speak with you."

I nodded. "Bring him in."

Pam reached for the door and yanked it back open. She disappeared for a moment before returning with her interrupter.

The shifter was a man, around thirty, with short mess hair and the appearance of a country bumpkin. The plaid attire and dirty jeans told me that this country hick didn't care much for putting on a show.

"You're the Sherrif?" he asked.

"What do you want, shifter?" I asked.

"Your help."

My eyes widened. "Did that hurt to say?" I asked, a smirk rising on my face.

"This is my last resort. Human police are useless. I tried tracking her myself, but your kind is too fucking fast," he grumbled.

"Lost someone?"

"One of the girls who works for me, her name's Sookie Stackhouse. She disappeared a few weeks ago and I believe a vampire kidnapped her." The shifter pulled out a folded page from his pocket, opened it and showed me a picture of a smiling blonde girl. The shifter had his arm around her shoulders.

I asked, "What makes you think a vampire is involved?"

"One showed up just before she disappeared. Same time girls in my town started dying. Sookie started hanging out with the fanger, next thing her grandmother is dead, brothers in jail, and no one can find her."

I reached out to take the photo. The girl would lure any vampire in with those eyes. The uniform fitted her well, showing over her healthy curvy body.

"Sookie's a good person. She's never done anything wrong in her life. She only started spending time with the fanger because he could give her what no one else could."

Pam smirked. "An orgasm?" she asked.

The shifter sneered.

"Do you have a name for this fanger she was spending time with?" I asked.

"Compton. Bill Compton. Apparently, he lived in Bon Temps when he was human."

I looked up from the photo of the girl to look back at the shifter. If the girl was lucky, Compton would have dropped her off to the Queen and moved onto his next task. The vampire had been a procure for the Queen of Louisiana for a few years now and kept Sophie-Anne's residence overflowing.

"I don't know all of your laws," said the shifter, "but I know you all don't want trouble with the media. If a story of a young woman being kidnapped by one of you lot got out, I had no doubt it would cause all sorts of trouble for you."

Pam stepped forward. "Is that a threat?"

I glanced at Pam, nudging her to backoff.

"I'll track down Compton to see if he has your employee."

The shifter nodded. "Great, thanks."

"But it will cost you," I added.

The shifter's face darkened. "Fine, whatever. If you do find something, you can find me at Merlotte's in Bon Temp." He pulled out a card and dropped it on the desk before letting himself out.

Pam walked over and took the photo from my hand. She looked it over and smiled. "If we find this girl, can I have a taste before we return her?"

I chuckled. "You really want Compton's leftovers?"

She shrugged. "This one looks as sweet as a peach, so maybe." She put down the photo. "Do you think Compton has her?"

"He might. You remember what he was like. Impulsive. Cared little for rules. How he ended up in Sophie-Anne's employ is what is most strange."

"I thought he was completely enamoured with his maker. They were the last time I saw them."

"Perhaps she grew tired of him. Or maybe he of her. Then again, Lorena never did like to let go of her toys." I stretched back in my chair. "Call Dylan Wright. Have him dig up everything he can on the girl. I have a phone call of my own I need to make."

Pam nodded and stepped out of my office.

The rules upheld by the Vampire Authority were interesting. Many were taken with a grain of salt; others were enforced heavily. Many believed and practiced in the rule that if there are no witnesses it never happened. Things changed somewhat after our revelation to humans, but not everything did. You could do what you wanted as long as you didn't leave any trace. As Sherrif of Area 5 I delt with a number of responsibilities, including dealing and disposing of those who had broken particular laws. And that included not only vampires but humans.

It wasn't my concern if Compton had absconded with a human. He could do what he wished. But it seemed he hadn't been too concerned about those who would go looking for this girl. She was as Pam said, sweet as a peach, but what was so special that could push Compton to be so brazen. There was also the question, if he had been in my area, why hadn't he reported in as was expected by all vampires. Visiting or not, you reported to the area sheriff when passing through.

What was also curious were the shifters words. He had mentioned that Compton was able to give this girl something she couldn't get anywhere else. While Pam had seen it a chance to make a joke, it did have me wondering.

I picked up the photo and looked into her blue eyes. I looked forward to finding out what exactly was so special about this girl.
