I do not own Gate or Touhou.

There is a Hidden City, located on the Moon. It has stood there for untold ages. It's people, Lunarians, have once fled the filth of Earth to settle in this, Pure Land. From that time and till the current days, Lunarian Society has always been superior to any other societies of the Earth, be it Human or Youkai. Great feats of technological and magical prowess, achieved through the liberation of the Impurity's grasp, have cemented their supremacist views. Any being that is not one of them is considered inferior in all possible ways.

Some would expect a nation with such a demeanor would end up as an expansionist Empire that purges any and all species it will come in contact with. Yet, their supremacism has manifested in a strict isolation instead, as being outside of their Pure Land for any noticeable amount of time was often considered a fate worse than death among their kind.

The only species that was tolerated by Lunarians, to a degree, were the Moon Rabbits, the native dwellers of the Moon. Yet, even they were considered a second-class citizens by them, often performing menial tasks for their masters, or being nothing more than a pet to them.

Being free of the Impurity of Earth ensures the long-term stability and prosperity of their realm. But they still face crises from time to time, as when the Youkai of Earth had foolishly tried to invade them, only to return home beaten and humiliated, or when the Americans dared to claim their land. Sometimes even the unimaginable happens, as when one of the founders and the very person responsible for the protection of the Capital, betrayed them and escaped to the Earth, never to be seen again.

Recently though, they have barely managed to escape destruction by the hands of an unexpected adversary. This ordeal had its impact on the views of Lunarians. For too long have they dismissed the many different realms that have been all around them. The change is looming, but for the eternally living people of the Moon, the passing of time is insignificant. The change may come in a century, or a millennia, or it may never come to be.

Unless something urgent forces it upon them.

The mysterious entity was truly intrigued to find a civilisation on a Moon of an already peculiar planet. It had searched for mortals to watch for their own entertainment. And it has found them, in a world they have once already tampered with. Yet, now? With these new unknown people, it would be so much more interesting. They will make it known through all of their world, that this time, Two Gates shall open, promising fortune and glory to anyone bold enough to claim it…

The whole of Lunar Capital was in a state of emergency. The Udonge trees had sprouted, alerting them of the influx of Impurity. Lunar Defense Corps immediately mobilised, its leaders, Lunarian Princesses and sisters, Toyohime and Yorihime Watatsuki, started to search out the source of this intrusion. They had discovered that something had caused a pathway to somewhere to begin from inside their great City. The passage was weak, but it was growing in power. The Impurity surged through it, threatening the very nature of things in their beautiful world.

An ancient mechanisms and spells emplaced by their great teacher sprung to life, allowing them to isolate the intrusion and to locate it at a desirable place, but not to cut it. Thanks to it, the passage was moved to the beaches of the Sea of Tranquility. This place held a meaning for the Lunar Guardians. This was the place where all invasion attempts and random transfers had occurred in the past, and each of them was defeated or/and send back where they came from. This placement also allowed to minimise the Impurity coming to the Capital.

Having no way to stop the formation of the unknown corridor, sisters decided to meet whoever dared to invade them in battle and prove once again that the might of Lunar Capital is undeniable. Hundreds of Rabbit soldiers moved to their designated positions. The defence was prepared swiftly and efficiently. Yorihime had made sure of it. Meanwhile Toyohime was monitoring the situation. The spread of Impurity was mostly stopped, yet the possibility of a real battle erupting on the Moon's surface so soon after the last major conflict was dreadful. Who would've tried to attack them now, when they barely had recovered? Was it the Gap Youkai again, trying to capitalize on their momentarily weakness? Have humans of the Earth finally discovered them and moved on to conquer? Did the Goddess of Hell come up with a new plan to reach their prisoner?

But as the corridor manifested more and more, it had become apparent this was entirely unknown to them. A large structure of white marble has begun to appear. Lunarians could not recognise it's style, but it was apparent to be primitive. When it finally finished materialising, sounds started to be heard from within it. From the darkness of the structure's gate, emerged lots and lots of horrid creatures.

They varied in size. Some were noticeably taller than the Lunarian Princesses. Others were even shorter than the Rabbits. They were wearing rags and held poorly crafted weapons. And they all were lusting blood. They barely managed to not start lashing out at each other, especially seeing that the opposing force was of so low number. They were certain of the coming slaughter. They were ready to claim as many trophies as they could, not even their own allies would be spared, should they stand in the way. Some of them were licking their lips in expectations of the spoils of battle.

The sisters were utterly disgusted. Not one invader has ever been so insufferable. There were only two words, said by them in unison: «Open fire. »

The soil of the Land of Pure was not to be spoiled by the blood of the filth. The Lunarian's weapons were very potent at ensuring that. The shots, upon making contact with the Impurity in the bodies of the monsters, had caused it to explode in a violent reaction. As the result, the Impurity was Purged off the face of the Moon, along with the body of a creature that was foolish enough to enter the land forbidden to them.

There may have been thousands of them, but not even in two minutes, there was none left. That was the retaliation for seeking out what they had.

But the invasion hasn't even started yet. Through the mysterious gates, marched an actual army.

Legatus Titus Magnus was rather disappointed when his legion was reassigned. Every Imperial soldier dreamt to be among those to go through the Gates on the Sacred Alnus Hill in their lifetime. Yet, in the bare weeks before the expected Gate opening, he was sent to some other, «Secondary gate». It was like he and his men were not worthy of partaking in the holy crusade.

Along with his, one more legion got reassigned there. They barely even got any support with them. No wyverns, barely any monster vanguard and mages. As if everyone thought of them as a much less important, despite their objective being seemingly the same as the main force's on Alnus: to march through, to conquer, to pillage, and return home with glory.

But that last part most certainly wasn't meant for them.

He was lucky enough to at least draw the lot to march before the other legion, right after the pathetic vanguard forces. At each moment of this campaign he was feeling he was robbed. And that feeling was shared by the most of men in this invasion army. But now?

He, along with every single soldier and officer of his legion, was dumbfounded. They were moving in formations by sheer instinct, but all of their minds desperately tried to comprehend what were they looking at. But they couldn't, yet, in their hearts, they knew it was something truly wonderful.

The magnificent city of peculiar design, gazing proudly upon them from heights considered possible to build only for gods. It stood on the shore of a sea, with seemingly purest water there could be. The soil was glowing of with heavenly light. The skies were pulsating with otherworldly purplish glow. Stars could be easily observed from there, along with something else. It was an object they have never seen in their life. A little circle in the sky, having a mixture of blue and green shapes. Yet, all of them knew one thing about this place: it was «home»...

«Attention, invaders! Drop your weapons and surrender immediately. Failure to comply will be met with your utter and full annihilation.»

A feminine voice sounded over them. It sounded godly, to put it simple. It reverberated through the plain they were on, each soldier hearing it as clear as their own thoughts. It was commanding, threatening, authoritative. Many of them barely held themselves from complying. Only their iron discipline, forged in the Empire's training camps, was keeping them from doing so.

Titus snapped of his shock. He looked where he heard the voice come from. Far ahead of them, barely a couple of centuries stood. From their ranks, someone had walked forward. Seems like she was addressing them just now. It was hard to make out any of her features from there. From what he could see, she had long, blond hair, and wore a dark blue dress over white long-sleeved blouse. A white bonnet was on her head. Such fashion was alien to the Empire, but he still felt as if he was in a presence of a god. A second of contact with her golden eyes had convinced him, this was the most beautiful woman he'll ever see in his life.

His commander instincts had finally started to kick in. He had realized that this was it, the only defensive force they had there. Should his men crush them, this whole heavenly realm would be up for their grabs. Their numbers were so low, it wouldn't even be a slaughter. Untold riches, glory for subduing a land of gods, the concubine (or even wife) so beautiful the Emperor will be jealous. Yes. He was finally in the right state of mind for the coming conquest.

He addressed his own men, gathering their attention and speaking of the Empire's glory. Of its past, present and future. The future, forged by their hands in this very land. The reassignment was not a curse, it was a blessing. Nothing on the other side of the Alnus Gates would ever be more glorious than this. They were the chosen of the Gods, the best of the Emperor.

The soldiers were exiting their stupor. Listening to the speech of their leader had inspired them. No one doubted what they were to do now. They readied their weapons. Mages prepared their spells. Now it was time to order them to attack, and the true glory will be theirs!

But then, suddenly…

Something had changed. There were no more heavenly light, no more fascinating glow. The sky has turned dark, as if in the middle of the night, yet the Sun was shining brighter than in the summer day. He couldn't breathe. He panicked. He threw his hand to his throat, trying to free it from something that wasn't there. His horse panicked as well. It tried to run, but stumbled at its own feet, throwing Titus to the ground. His fall was incredibly slow. The dust had been thrown in all the directions when he has finally fallen. It was unbearable. The second were dragging to minutes. His lungs hurt like hell, his eyes and mouth had dried. He was barely holding without losing consciousness. Any second now, he knew, he will close his eyes, never to reopen them again.

And as suddenly as it had come, it had ended. Not even the ten seconds of hell for Titus Magnus has ended, and he was breathing greedily. He emptied his flask on his face and in his mouth. He barely stumbled on his own feet. His soldiers were looking at him with the sheer horror in their eyes.

«This is your one and only warning. Turn back and leave or surrender. Do it, now. Or I personally will ensure that nothing of you leaves this side of the Gates!»

The commanding voice had sounded once again. The fear was spreading among the ranks. But Titus could not be defeated so easily.

He got up on his horse once again and unsheathed his sword. Despite almost meeting his end right there and now, he couldn't let the Emperor down. As their ancestors, when the barbaric tribes of the north had almost wiped out the entire Imperial army, when the enemy was seemingly unstoppable, they persevered and ended up victorious. And now they couldn't falter as well. They won't betray the glory of their past. Besides, the spell of such power should be very hard to maintain. It was evident because he wasn't killed by it. Who would in their right mind spare the life of the enemy commander? The morale was restored. Convinced in their enemy's weakness, the legion has begun its attack.

The last thing Legatus Magnus did was ordering his messengers to contact his fellow Legatus on the other side and tell him to come there. There was plenty of glory to share.

Toyohime sighed with regret, seeing the unknown army beginning their advance. They have sealed their fate. Now it was her due to end them.

«Don't shoot,» she simply said to the Rabbits before starting to walk towards the charging invaders.

She was slowly closing in on them, the Fan of Purging was in her right hand. When she had deemed herself to be at the appropriate distance from the Rabbits, she had brought the Fan up and opened it. She took her aim. It was sheer seconds before the bloodthirsty mob would hit her, but the only emotion on her face was pity.

And so, she swung the Fan…

On the other side, Legatus Gaius Agustus was becoming impatient. Being only recently promoted to his position, he earned for his first battle. Contrary to the most of this army, he was glad to be reassigned. With only two legions being here, his own accomplishments would be much more noticeable and other, much more popular commanders, won't overshadow him. So now, he was really pissed that he drew to be the second to come through. Titus haven't even wanted to partake in this campaign, why didn't he just allow him to be the first?

And his irritation was nearing its peak. Aside from a strange, rather power gush of wind coming through the Gates, there was nothing from the other side. Did Titus decided to leave him and his men with nothing? It was insulting as it was, but it also was very dumb. Throughout the history of the Empire, it was a recurring thing for their commanders to overestimate their own capabilities. No matter how weak, disorganized or barbaric the enemy is, marching on without any preparations or reconnaissance often led to the excessive losses, or even the humiliating defeats. Many in the Empire used the examples of such an event to praise the unyielding people of the Empire, and while that was true, there wouldn't be a need for it if the commanders didn't make foolish mistakes ending up losing half of the army in single combat.

And leaving half of their forces there simply to be able to pillage more was certainly looking just like that same mistake.

Gaius decided it was the time to act. He had ordered his scouts to go through the gates and get to know what's happening there. He didn't expect them to return so soon. But after just looking at them, he realized something had gone wrong on the other side.

They were sweating. They were moving erratically, hyperventilating. They barely managed to talk, and it was mostly gibberish.

«T-there's a… monster! The eyes! Monster in the Gate!»

That was one of the best sentences he could decipher. He couldn't get much about this apparent monster other than that it had hundreds of blood-red eyes and was so big it was taking up all the place inside the Gates.

Legatus August had ordered the panicked scout to be put into custody for the time being and had gone to check up on his forces in front of the gates. Surely, his men would notice a monster approaching them.

Arriving here, he noticed that indeed something was off. The vanguard of his legion was at the edge. It seemed that somehow madness was making its way into their minds. Trying to figure out the cause, he walked in front of them and gazed into the darkness of the Gates.

And the Darkness gazed back.

There he saw it, the monster in the shadows. Lots and lots of glowing red eyes, surely thirsting for blood. The eyes were encompassing the entirety of the space inside the Gate. And whatever that thing was, it was approaching. Slowly. Gently. As a predator, readying to leap at them.

He felt sick. His head started spinning. His breath quickened. He called for his officers and started to lash out orders. His speech was confused. Orders contradicted each other. It took him some time to realise he couldn't think straight. The madness has grasped his mind firmly. No matter, how he tried, he couldn't calm himself down. In his wretched state, he was barely able to appoint his second-in-command to be in charge in his stead, as he was clearly incapacitated. But, it seems, it was too late now.

Screams erupted at the entrance to the Gate. Men dropped their weapons and run. The Monster was there.

Reisen was happy to finally be out of the darkness. She was glad to see that her idea to focus the Rabbits mind waves on the humans had paid off. They were disorganized, scared and outright mad. But now was the hard part. They have made it to the Impure land, and that seriously dwindled their combat capabilities. While their rifles were able to cause the Impurity to collapse on itself, using it in it's full power would result in the weapon exploding on its own. So they would need to shoot each and every one of them with a simple, barbaric even, laser beams and plasma rounds, causing lethal injuries and killing their enemies that way.

At least, their highly heated shots won't leave any blood on the ground.

She had sent out a telepathic command, and all the rabbits had stopped attacking humans mentally and prepared to shoot. Their telepathy was wonderful for that kind of battle. Having so much firepower on them would've caused them to overkill individual targets while causing to little damage to the enemy as a whole. But by combining their thoughts, they all could choose a single target. As most of them were already flying through the Gate, their ranks have formed right in the air, allowing for their firing line to actually be more like a surface. That would be a devastating firepower, with the incredible density and targeting that ensured the maximum kill speed imaginable.

Finishing their formation, they've opened fire. The bodies immediately started to mount. They were untouchable, and their enemy was defenseless. Soon, the humans had abandoned all hope of holding their positions and started to run. But the Rabbits didn't let them be. There was but one order issued to them by the Lady Yorihime: «Leave no survivors.»

The Empire will never hear of the devastating defeat they had suffered near the Lunar Gates. Only thing hinting at that would be the lost contact with their army, as well as with any scouts sent to find out what had happened there.

With the fall of the invading army, the Lunar Defense Corps was now facing a problem of their inability to close or to destroy the Gate, without causing a devastation to the Lunar Capital. It seemed that they will need to find the solution in this world. And while they're at it, they should find out who's responsible for this attack. The humans knew about the Gate's opening, it was evident by their readiness to wage a long campaign. But they were too weak to open it themselves.

With their being in this world ensured for the time being, thus began their Purge. The Purification machines walked through the Gate. The construction of their hold on this Impure land has marked the first even instance of Lunarians waging a war on the corrupted soil. Watatsuki sisters could only hope it would be the last.
