When Spike and Rarity had finally gotten married (after Spike had grown up and hit a growth spurt a few years into serving as Twilight's royal advisor), the two knew that there would be challenges throughout their lives. After all, nopony had ever heard of a pony and a dragon being together before. That alone attracted quite a sensation for the two, and it was only made harder by the fact that Spike had to frequently alternate between Ponyville (where Rarity continued to operate Carousel Boutique, albeit with a little help from Yona and Sandbar on occasion) and Canterlot whenever Twilight had need of them.

Through it all, through thick and thin, they had stayed together and supported one another. Nothing could strain or break the bond they shared. But when Rarity learned that she was pregnant, and the child would be half pony/half dragon, that presented a whole new challenge to her and to Spike.

To say that the birth of this pony/dragon hybrid was complicated and difficult would be an understatement. It was a good thing Twilight was on hoof to provide magical assistance throughout the delivery process, because Rarity wasn't sure how she would've managed without the supreme princess' aid.

It was all worth it, though, when the fashionista gave birth to a healthy unicorn filly with ruby red eyes, a dazzling emerald green coat, a light blue mane and tail that sparkled like diamonds, and even a fang, dragon wings, and dragon scales. It took very little time in comparison to the delivery for the parents to settle on a name: Barbra.

Rarity thought she was prepared for raising her own foal. After all, she'd practically raised Sweetie Belle for several years, and Sweetie had grown up into a fine young mare with a promising future. Surely, taking care of Barbra would be no less difficult.

Alas, Barbra was an entirely different ballgame compared to Sweetie Belle. And it wasn't for the reasons you might have expected. Rarity was grateful that Spike usually took care of changing Barbra's diapers (apparently, having frequently been exposed to his own dirty feet many times, and having endured the stench from his molt, such stinky smells never bothered him anymore), giving her specially modified teething rings that wouldn't be destroyed by her dragon fang, and entertaining the little one during times when the demands of her fashion empire drew Rarity away.

But Barbra seemed to grow to almost resent her mother, despite how much they appeared to have in common on the outside. Frequently, she would roar and growl at Rarity whenever the fashionista drew near, sometimes even bearing her fang. And if Rarity didn't back off, she would usually have said fang sung into her tail, which always made her shriek.

Parenting wasn't something one partner could just monopolize, however. And like it or not, Rarity was going to find herself all alone when it was time to help her daughter with a very important milestone.

"Aw but Daddy," Barbra whined one day when she was at the age of three. "Do you have to go away again? You're so much more fun than Mommy, she's no fun at all."

"Hey, who was it who took you to the park last weekend, little missy?!" Rarity huffed. "Your father was quite insistent that you be allowed to mingle with other foals. I'm just grateful you haven't learned how to breathe fire yet. Oh, how would I ever explain that to the families of the little ones?"

Barbra snorted. "You always tell me to play nice, Mommy. But it's not my fault. Other ponies think I'm weird. They're always poking at me and trying to make me do things."

Rarity tried to sweetly reply. "They're just curious, Barbra. There's never been a pony like you before. They'll grow out of it when they're a little older."

And Spike spoke up as he lowered his head to his daughter's level. "Barbra, I'm sorry, but Twilight needs my help again. And you know I can't ignore an order from the pony to whom I owe so much. She took me into her family and raised me into the dragon I am today," He kissed her softly on the forehead. "This just sounds like another routine friendship problem between two different kingdoms, same old same old. I promise, I'll come back as soon as it's taken care of. While I'm gone, can you please try to be nice to your mother? Don't make a fuss and do whatever she tells you to do, okay?"

Barbra sighed, but seemed to agree. "I'll try, Daddy."

That seemed to satisfy the old dragon, because he said to his daughter. "That's all I can ask for, Barbra," And then he kissed his wife lovingly on the forehead. "Sorry to have to leave you like this, Rarity. But think of this as your chance to get in some quality bonding time with our only daughter. I can't always be there to take over for you. She's your responsibility too." And then he unfolded his wings and took to the skies, soon disappearing from sight.

Barbra and Rarity watched Spike until he was out of sight, then they both went back inside of Carousel Boutique. As of right now, there were no customers or clients to deal with, so the two were alone in the boutique's interior.

Barbra, however, didn't want anything to do with her mother. She just stuck out her tongue, hissed, and said in a defiant tone. "Don't talk to me until it's time for dinner." And she wandered off, her back turned to Rarity.

The fashionista could only sigh, and opted not to pry. Barbra seemed to have inherited that natural anti-social tendency that dragons were only now starting to grow out of. She could only hope that this was indeed a phase, and that Barbra would not continue to be so detached and aloof from her.

Oh well, there was plenty of time to try later on. Rarity knew that she had some special gems she'd been saving to offer to Ruby as a special treat (for now at least, she could eat and digest gems just fine, and there seemed to be no adverse effects that any doctor had noticed). They always said the fastest way to the heart was through the stomach. And the fashionista hoped that it would prove true for her and Barbra.

Suddenly, however, Barbra came rushing right up to Rarity! That was a sure sign that something was amiss. And indeed there was, Barbra was clutching her stomach with a hoof (of which claw-like appendages stuck out) as it gurgled ominously. It looked as if she was visibly straining herself, making the flame-proof metal diaper she was wearing rumble and clang. "Mommy! I think something's wrong with me!" She complained!

"It's probably just another bit of fire indigestion," Rarity concluded. "We've been over this before, Barbra. Just let it out. You'll be fine. There's nothing flammable around, I've made sure of that."

The pony/dragon hybrid groaned and moaned as her stomach continued to gurgle ominously, all but forcing her to the floor. "I don't think that it's. This doesn't feel like fire, it feels like something else. Like I have to… have to…"

The realization dawned on the fashionista all of a sudden! The source of her daughter's distress was painfully clear. And if something wasn't done to rectify it soon, it was only going to end one way. A way that Rarity would absolutely detest, a way she would rather avoid if at all possible. And so it prompted her to exclaim as a light bulb went off inside her head! "-Like you have to go to the washroom, my dear! Yes, that must be it."

"Washroom?" Barbra blinked in confusion. She wasn't fully used to the fancy talk and the fancy words her mother still sometimes used.

"Oh, you know what I mean," Rarity said with a knowing wink. "Come, let us rectify that immediately, darling. After all, your father and I agreed that it is about time you learned the proper way to answer nature's call," And she led her daughter away. "Don't worry. Just do exactly as I tell you, and you will see how easy and satisfying it is."

Mother and daughter soon adjourned to the bathroom, the rumbling, gurgling feeling in Barbra's stomach only continuing to increase in intensity. It looked like it was taking everything she had to keep it under control. Luckily, the bathroom was well lit, and everything within it had been polished and scrubbed clean so that it sparkled in dazzling detail. This included the plumbing fixtures: Chief among them a gleaming white toilet.

"Here we are," Rarity said with a smile as she brought her daughter before the toilet. "It's time for you to start using the lavatory. Or, if it's easier for you, you can just call it the potty."

Barbra gulped a bit, eyeing the strange porcelain contraption. "I have to use that?" She questioned.

The fashionista unicorn nodded, using her magic to pull down her daughter's metal diaper and help her onto the seat. "Yes, of course, darling. Everypony uses it eventually, even your father and I. You mustn't be afraid. I know it sounds scary giving up your diapers and using something like this, but it cannot hurt you. Just have a seat and relax."

"So… what do I do?" The unicorn filly with dragon like features asked her mother.

Flashing a wink of encouragement, Rarity sweetly insisted. "Whatever you need to do, Barbra. I know you have to go. And it's great that you can recognize the signs ahead of time. Not all ponies your age can do that. I was hoping to at least wait until your father returned from Canterlot to start this training. But that's okay, I'm sure there'll be plenty of time to get him involved in it when he does get back."

Though hesitant and reluctant, Barbra nevertheless opted to do as her mother had instructed. If nothing else, it would get rid of that strong, strange feeling in her stomach. So she relaxed, and shut her eyes as she grunted and started to push, her tail hiking upward in the process. Soon, there came an audible set of plops and splashes, followed by a very powerful and very familiar smell. And Barbra had to admit her stomach felt a lot better once it was "empty".

Rarity had seen the whole thing, and she naturally couldn't resist applauding and clapping her hooves together! "Well done, Barbra! Simply splendid! You've successfully used the potty!"

"I did?" Barbra blinked, still apparently uncertain of what she'd just done.

Rarity happily nodded. "Yes indeed. And do you see how easy it was to do so? I hope now you can do it whenever you start to get funny feelings in your tummy. Then you won't have to wear diapers anymore. Just think of all the freedoms you'll have as a result."

"That does sound nice," Barbra admitted. "I hate having to wear those stupid metal things. Everypony else's diapers are much softer. It's not fair that they can't make flameproof diapers like that!" But then she hesitated. "But now that I've used the potty, how do I clean myself up?"

Rarity used her magic to pull some rolls of toilet paper off a nearby rack. "Just use this, darling. Rub it back and forth over your flanks until they're clean. When you're done, just put it in the toilet and I will show you what to do next," She watched as her daughter obeyed, soon depositing the used rolls into the toilet bowl. "Are you ready for the next step?" Upon receiving a confirming nod, she used her magic to surround a silver handle off to the right hoof side. "Do you see this handle? Just press it down, and the toilet will take care of the rest."

The handle was forced down with an audible clinking sound. Then, suddenly, there came a roar as the waters in the toilet started to spin around and around! Barbra looked down, seeing that everything within the bowl had been swept up by the waters. Faster and faster it spun, until it all disappeared down a hole at the bottom. Afterwards, the toilet refilled itself slowly, with no sign of anything that had been in the bowl before. It was almost like a magic trick.

As Barbra got off the toilet seat, Rarity explained to her daughter. "That was what's known as a flush, my dear. It makes everything disappear. Far better than having to carry your mess around with you, no?"

"I guess that sounds better than wearing diapers," Barbra agreed as she was brought before the sink to wash her hooves. "Thank you for teaching me, Mommy."

Rarity smiled. "Oh, it was my pleasure, darling. And know that I will always be here to help you throughout your potty training. I've been down this road before, and on this I am quite certain that there will be very few bumps."
