The First Seal

"Yeah Dean, I'll get the chips." Sam sighed into his cell, catching Jane shaking her head from the corner of his eye and blew out loudly, just to annoy Dean.

"Don't forget the pie!"

"Dude, when I have ever forgotten the pie?"

Jane shifted in her seat to cock an eyebrow at him, folding her arms over her chest. Dean had given them pretty far out there news. He had supposedly been saved from the pit by… an angel. An angel named Castiel, who had also knocked Bobby's ass unconscious. Bobby and Dean were back at the house doing research, while she and Sam had been sent on a munchies run. She was still having issues wrapping her head around the whole angel thing.

Her attention was pulled from her thoughts when she seen Kristy standing in front of the car and she slapped Sam upside his head.

"Ow! Nothing Dean, just your wife being mean. I got to go." He hung up, shooting her a dark look before following her gaze out the windshield. "Crap."

"You are in so much trouble, Sammy." She hissed, getting out of the Impala when he did.

"Jane, just sit." He pleaded, staring at her across the roof of the car.

"You can kiss my ass, Winchester. That's Ruby, isn't it?"

"Well Jane, looks like you are definitely the brains in your marriage." Ruby laughed, smiling wickedly when they joined her. "I wasn't expecting you to be with Sammy."

"Don't call him that." Jane snapped, not overly pleased at being right. It wasn't that hard to put together. Sam had said Ruby had been in contact with him. There had been something up with "Kristy" that night at the hotel and then there was the fact that Sam was setting off her gut feelings on speed ability constantly.

Ruby's smirk grew wider. "Aw, a little protective of Sammy are we? I can see why he likes you."

"Ruby." Sam said in warning, not about to have them going at it. "What do you want?"

"Is it true?"

"Is what true?"

"That an angel," She spat the word. "Pulled your brother out of the pit?"

"You heard?"

"Who hasn't? Is it true?"

"Maybe, we don't know yet."

"We're 100% sure." Jane said flatly, ignoring the identical looks of annoyance she was shot.

They could both kiss her ass.

"Don't tell Dean."

Jane had been silent the entire ride back home, not even bothering to point out that Sam had forgotten the damn pie. Not that pie seemed all that important in the scheme of things. "Don't tell Dean what?" She sniped, more than a little angry. "That you've been screwing around with a damn demon? Literally, screwing. Ruby? Ugh… Damn it, Sam…"

"Don't tell him, Jane."

She huffed, staring up the lane towards the scrapyard. He had stopped before pulling in, to talk to her about what had happened. She was not about to play ball. "Sam, he needs to know."

"Jane, please, just… let me explain."

"Please, try to explain why you're still dealing with her? She was useless before Sam, outside of the knife, and she's evil, or did you forget?"

"She's not evil, she's helping me."

"Helping you?"

"It's complicated, and we don't have time. Just, please, trust me."

"No."

"You sound like Dean, you know that?"

"I'm not Dean, Sam." She unbuckled, turning in her seat until she was facing him completely. "I'm not blinded by the whole 'he's the baby' factor Dean has going and I don't feel like the weight of the universe rests on my shoulders."

Sam blinked. She really did know Dean.

"I'm not a hunter and I wasn't raised on this stuff, but even I can see she's evil."

"You're wrong."

"Maybe, doesn't change things."

"You will not tell Dean."

Her mouth dropped open at the commanding tone he used. His voice had darkened, gotten rougher, and he had delivered a command. Just like Dean used to do, only… he wasn't Dean, and she wasn't about to take orders from her brother-in-law. "Not going to work Sam, only Dean gets to do that and if you ever try it again, I'll shoot you."

"I mean it, Jane."

"So do I."

"Keep the car running."

Jane and Sam exchanged confused looks at Bobby's order. When Sam had finally pulled into the drive, they were greeted to Bobby and Dean outside of the house.

"Why? What's going?" Sam asked curiously, leaning out the now rolled down window.

"Olivia Lowry- she's a friend from a state over. I've been trying to get a hold of her for a few days about this angel thing. She's not answering and it ain't like her."

"Hunter, right?"

Bobby nodded. "Yeah, we're going to go check on her. You'll follow me." He took off towards his car as Dean approached.

Sam looked at Jane, obviously expecting her to jump in the backseat. She had always sat back there before.

Jane just shook her head. "Don't think so."

Muttering under his breath, he awkwardly clambered into the backseat, making sure to get her shoulder in the process. Most of the time, he was glad to have a sister-in-law and generally, he liked Jane. Ever since… yeah, well, not so much anymore. She was a pain in the ass.

Dean ignored the weird seating situation, accepting the bag of food Jane passed him and rifled through it. "You forgot the pie!"

Sam buried his face in his hands with a groan.

"You left us, Janey."

Jane whirled around, her heart freezing in her chest at that very familiar voice, familiar even though she hadn't heard it eight years. Her dad was standing there, only, it wasn't her dad. Well, it was, but not her dad as she had last seen him. he had been alive the last time she had seen him. This was not a living man. "You're dead."

Her father, or his ghost, nodded once, looking less than pleased with the fact. "That I am, Janey girl. Demons came looking for you. Wouldn't believe that we hadn't seen hide nor hair of you since you came back from Mexico long enough to move out. Wouldn't believe anything we said." He smiled, a flat, humorless smile. "Of course, maybe by that point, they were just having fun tearing me and your mom apart."

"Probably." Jane said in a voice as dry as his, wondering why she wasn't feeling guilty about this. "So, why are you here?" It didn't fit the puzzle. Sam, Dean and Bobby had all had run in's with people they hadn't saved, people they felt guilty about dying. She didn't really feel anything… not yet anyway, and this was a first for her. She hadn't been in contact with anyone from her old life, or the one pre-Dean, in years. So, she hadn't been aware her parents had died, therefore: no chance of saving them and no guilt.

"Your mama died screaming your name."

Now there was guilt.

"Do you believe in the devil?"

Jane shifted in Dean's arms in order to tilt her head back to see his face. "It's a bit early for theological questions, isn't it?"

"Do you?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I believe in God."

"So… you believe in them both?"

"Good versus evil, Dean," Jane yawned. "You can't have one without the other, or else there would be no point in faith."

"You believe in God, even after what happened last night?" He couldn't help but sound skeptical.

"Makes me more of a believer." She rested her head on his shoulder, trailing the tips of her fingers up and down his chest, wondering what brought this on. Probably the Witness and Apocalypse thing, that had definitely gotten her a bit spooked. "Of course, I'm not devout or anything, or practice, I just believe. I'm a lazy believer."

"Hmm." He hugged her close, burying his face in her hair. "Want to talk about your folks?"

"Not really."

"Not healthy to bottle it all up like that."

"That's not what you tell Sam."

"You're not Sam, sweetheart. I'm just saying, if you need someone to talk to, you know you can come to me, right?"

"I know, Dean."
