Season 4, Episode 10: Heaven and Hell. -Check it out on the Supernatural Wiki if you want to know more about the episode this chapter takes place in.

Thanks everyone for the reviews, faves, follows, and constructive criticisms. Special thanks to TragicBlossom who has given me food for thought, much appreciated :) You guys are awesome :) I'm trying to rile up my inner plot bunnies, but so far, they're fizzling. I've gotten PM's asking for a bit less cannon and more exploration of Jane, so here's a little dip into that -emphasis on little.

Oh and for the Dean/Jane shippers -bless you guys- no worries, there will be NO cheating. Maybe flirting elsewhere from time to time, inner monologues about the topic, or suggestions within the story but ultimately those two are saddled with each other and will not be straying.

I own nothing save for Jane, though if the PTB would like to toss me Dean, I would never say no. Reviews are great, constructive criticism is great, flames are used to supplement heating my house.

Angel in My Dreams

Anna leaned in and dropped a kiss on Dean's cheek.

He stepped away from her, looking confused. "What was that for?"

"You know… our last night on earth and all that."

Dean smiled slightly, nodding. "You're stealing my best line."

"Am I?"

"Yeah, I think I'm going to go pull it on my wife." He didn't miss the way Anna's face slightly fell and moved back towards her, gently placing his hands on her shoulders. "It's not our last night Anna, I can promise you that."

She managed to smile up at him. "Yeah, of course. I'm sorry, I didn't think, I- right, Jane, you're married to her."

"Castiel, what is the point of you showing me this?" Jane asked, trying to sound cross though it was a bit hard when she was feeling very pleased. The last thing she remembered was falling asleep in Dean's arms, now she was watching him reject Anna as kindly as he knew how. It gave her the warm and fuzzies. "You can't find us, or see us, so how?"

"Explaining would take more time than we have, Jane." He said flatly, not about to go into the mechanics of entering a mind when it was defenseless. The hex bags prevented them from finding the Winchester and Co's physical location, not from this. "The point is to show you what you are going to lose."

"You mean Dean."

"Yes."

"How?"

"If we are not given Anna, Dean will be tossed back into Hell, Jane."

Jane was aware that everything around them was fading, all distractions gone, nothing but him and her, and his words. She felt her gut wrench at the thought of Dean going back to the basement, an image of him being torn apart by hellhounds flicking through her mind. "No, they wouldn't."

"They would."

"Cas, why haven't you tried talking to Dean? Without Uriel?"

"I am… under orders…"

"But you're talking to me."

"My orders make no mention of you directly." He placed a hand on her shoulder, watching as she shifted almost imperceptibly under the weight. "Jane, convince him to give Anna up."

She bit her lower lip.

"Flask down, Dean." Jane was not surprised, or impressed, by the sight of her husband taking a swig from his flask. He hadn't been drinking as much as usual, not since that night after the wishing incident, but seeing him imbibing this early… no.

"It's two A.M. somewhere." He shot back, but he did cap it and put the flask away. He managed a tense smile when he made her way to him, noting she was getting around better using one crutch, still babying her ankle. "How's that feeling?"

"Not so bad." She leaned into his side, taking stock of the barn's occupants. Just them, Sam, and Anna, which made her frown. "Where'd Ruby go?"

"No idea, she's not my hell bitch."

Before Jane could reply, the barn doors opened and all heads turned. Castile and Uriel walked in, Castiel looking impassive, like always, while Uriel seemed a bit… smug. She felt her stomach doing another wrench, pretty sure the knots from the last time it had done that hadn't unwound yet. Had she given away their position when she had seen Cas in her dream? She didn't think so… it would be helpful, if this stuff came with a handbook.

Words were exchanged and she would admit to feeling relief when she realized it wasn't her who had given their location away, confused as hell when it was made clear that it had been Dean. She studied him, taking in the way his face was tense, but not revealing anything. Whatever he was thinking, he wasn't sharing with the rest of the class.

What happened next was a giant cluster of fuckery. Demons showed up. Demons were kicking ass. Anna got her grace back. Demons gone. Angels backing done. Even after it had happened, and all creatures other than humans had vacated, she had to have it explained to her multiple times. "What did Alastair mean, Dean?" She asked finally, deciding she was going to have to mull the events over a few more times on her own. "That you had potential?"

He shot a glance to Sam and Ruby, who were off to the side, conversing quietly. "Heard that, did you?"

"Obviously."

"It's one of those things we'll talk about-"

"Later?"

He nodded, staring down at her. "Jane, I'll tell you, just not right now, all right?"

"Don't have much of a choice, do I?"

"You didn't convince him."

"While you were visiting me, Uriel was visiting him and Uriel pissed him off. You try talking Dean into doing something he don't want to do."

Castiel sighed, easing himself down on the swing beside her and frowned slightly, looking around. "Where are we?"

"You tell me." She was on the other swing, frowning as she tilted her head back. The swings were attached to a thick tree branch, it all looked familiar. "This is my dream, isn't it?"

"Yes."

"Do I know this place?"

"I would imagine." He fell silent, using his feet to push himself back and forth gently.

Jane kept looking around, taking in the dirt surrounding them, the old tire not too far off that served as a sandbox, and then finally the broken toys piled next to it. "It looks like my old backyard, but not everything is here…" Like the fence, and the house, and the rest of the world. She was dressed too. In a yellow sun dress, her feet bare and dirty… she let go of the ropes to check and make sure she still had breasts. Which she did, she wasn't in kid form tonight, she was just reliving or something, or at least visiting. "I don't get it Castiel, why here?"

"Is that what you really want to ask, Jane?" He was watching her drag her toes through the dirt, trying to use her big toe to plow a small row in the tightly packed earth.

"I have a feeling if I asked 'why me', you'd give me some vague, bullshit answer that doesn't answer anything. Or you'd tell me I'm a variable again."

"You are a variable." He looked directly at her. "You're an anomaly, you were unaccounted for."

"I beg your pardon?" Her eyebrows hitched at that. "What do you mean?"

"We can see, far and wide, throughout time… but you were not a factor in what was, is, and will be."

"See, this is what I'm talking about, vague. If you-"

"I can't. We can. My superiors."

"You're using 'we', as a whole. That's confusing."

He simply stared at her.

"What're they doing out there?"

Jane chuckled at the overly curious tone in Jo's voice and turned to look at the younger woman, thudding her way over to peek as well. "Sharing a beer, and talking."

Jo sighed in exasperation, rolling her eyes. "I know that… aren't you curious?"

"No, not really." Jane wasn't either, though she didn't like the pain filled expression on Dean's face as he turned to Sam. "If it's something I need to know, one of them will tell me."

"Dean looks upset."

"He does."

"Jo, those boxes aren't going to haul themselves."

Jo rolled her eyes again, turning to walk away, her mother taking her place.

"Jane, tell me the truth, how much trouble are they in?" Ellen demanded, folding her arms over her chest as she leaned against the doorframe, gazing outside through the open door.

"A lot, as usual." Jane shifted, adjusting her crutch under her arm to a more comfortable position. The swelling had gone done a lot, but it still hurt to walk on, though she figured within the next day she could switch over to the lovely brace Sam had picked up from a drugstore on their way here. "Angels, demons, the apocalypse… boatload of trouble, Ellen."

"Mmm…" Ellen didn't look overly phased, unless you happened to see the ways of the corners of her eyes tightened, her mouth only slightly tensing. "How'd you hurt yourself?"

"I fell out a window." Jane deadpanned, wondering how much she could tell Ellen without Dean getting upset. When she got a look she could only associate with a proper mother calling bullshit, she cleared her throat. Her mother had never used that look on her, and she was glad for it. That was a look that made her squirm. "Out a church window…"

"Not ground floor."

"That would have hurt less I'm assuming."

"Castiel, this is the third time in a week, you can't pop into my dreams like this. Don't you have other things to do?"

"I'm… what is the word you use?" He thought for a moment. "I am multitasking. We are hunting for Anna."

"How's that going?" Jane didn't bother asking why she was back at her parent's bar, waiting tables. She didn't want to know why she would be dreaming of this place, or the shapeless gray uniform she had been made to wear for a few years. She especially was not going to pay attention to the fact that her parents were behind the counter, counting the till. Her parents were dead.

"Not well." He walked alongside her, always moving before she could tell him to get out of her way, just watching as she served drinks and took orders. "This is what you did when you met Dean?"

"Yes." Jane was going to assume that the reason she could carry on a conversation with him as well as do her 'job' was because this was a dream. "But you can't keep hijacking my dreams. What do you want?"

"Dean is… special, you know that. He was pulled out of Hell for a reason."

"Do you know what that reason is?"

"But none of us anticipated you staying once he had died." He ignored her question. "When you first showed up on our radar, was this night."

"This night?" Jane frowned, turning to follow his gaze and felt her jaw drop at the sight of a younger Dean strolling into the bar. He made his way to the bar and sat down at a stool, ordering a beer that was immediately served to him. "Is this… when Dean and I met?"

"Janey, hurry up girl, I need you to wipe down counters."

"Yes, daddy." She clamped a hand over her mouth at the involuntary reply. "Cas, what the hell?"

"And then in Mexico…"

Jane blinked, finding the bar gone and almost reeled. She, or another her, was asleep, in a bed, with sunlight streaming down on her. Still younger Dean was staring down at her, looking agitated before finally allowing a reluctant smile to appear. "Seriously, Castiel, this is just- wrong." This was when Dean had left her in Mexico, and she watched as he set the envelope down on the bedside table, knowing a copy of their marriage certificate was in there. Almost as soon as he was out the door, a gust of wind blew the envelope off the stand and under the bed. "I never knew it was there…"

"Random accident or did something or someone intervene?" Castiel mused, more to himself then to her. "We cannot decide."

"Aren't you Dean's angel?"

"In a manner of speaking."

"So why are you bothering me?"

"Because I am trying to understand you, and you are more rational then Dean, with less ego and pride. You are more likely to listen to me."

"I won't turn on him, or do your dirty work, Castiel."

He 'hmm'd' her.

"Does my psychic thing have anything to do with the anomaly factor?"

"I don't know. You haven't been using it lately."

"How do you know?"

"Have you?"

"No…" She was trying to ignore it, and the headaches, and the nausea. "I can't control it, not really. I practiced, a year or so ago with Bobby, but…"

"You need to learn, Jane."

1) If you got the vibe I may not like Anna, you could be right. I liked her up until she went all Princess Stabbity Stab.

2) The dream thing with Cas -just go with it, lol. Or not.
