By the Hour
"Dude, this place charges by the hour."
"Yeah, well, the book said Lilith finds you at the Red Motel. So deal with the hooker hotel. It's opposite day, remember?" Dean tossed Jane her duffel bag, ignoring the looks he was receiving from Sam. "You should appreciate the fact that you get this fine looking ho-"
"Say it and die." She cautioned, not overly pleased with their situation, much less his jokes.
"Babysitter, by the hour." He finished, clearing his throat.
Huffing, Jane headed for the room they had been given, and paid an extraordinary amount for. Given the leer the clerk had shot them, she assumed he thought they were going to be busy doing some nasty things. She shuddered, feeling Sam coming up behind her. He was just as irritated with this as she was, but for the wrong reasons.
She agreed with Dean, they needed to get the hell out of dodge, before Lilith showed. They were nowhere near ready for a tussle with her, regardless of what Sam thought. A cursory look around the room showed her it was just as she thought: nothing special. She watched as Dean began stuffing what looked like hex bags all over the place.
"What're you doing?" Sam demanded.
"Lilith proofing."
"So, what? I'm just supposed to hole up here all night?" Sam wasn't happy and glared at Jane as if this were her fault. "With your wife?" He was purposefully hitting below the belt, knowing how jealous Dean could get.
Dean was already heading for the door, smirking. "Nice try Sammy, but it's not going to work. I trust her." He stopped, turning to stare his brother straight in the face. "In fact, I trust Jane more than I trust you. So yeah, you're gonna hole up here for the night. And no research. Use the Magic Fingers or something, watch porn."
"Seriously Dean?" Jane cocked an eyebrow at him.
"Don't you watch porn, you got enough crazy ideas as it is sweetheart." He winked at her as he pulled Sam's laptop from the bag.
"Hey man…"
"Sorry Sammy, no homework."
"What are you going to do?" Sam asked, knowing he sounded like he was grumping but he didn't overly care.
"Well, the book says I ride around in the Impala all day, so I'm going to go park her. Jane?"
"Yeah, I know, babysit Sam and don't watch the porn."
Jane had just walked out of the bathroom when she heard the knock at the door, shooting Sam a dark look. "What did you do?" She demanded, knowing taking a shower had been stupid on her part since she was supposed to be watching him and all, but he had promised to stay put.
He ignored her, walking over to answer it.
Jane groaned when she seen Chuck standing there. Well… Sam had stayed put, so she probably couldn't fault him for this. "Heya God." She greeted dryly.
Chuck nodded at her, clearing his throat nervously as he stepped past Sam and into the room.
"Thanks for coming." Sam quickly closed the door behind him, glancing at Jane. He would prefer to have this conversation without her present but he could see no way of convincing her to take a hike. That and she already knew everything he was about to talk about anyway.
"Ah, sure…"
"I wanted… I was wondering…" Sam cleared his throat anxiously. "About, uh, how much you know? About me, I mean."
"What do you mean?" Chuck shook his head when Jane offered him something to drink, staring intently at Sam.
"He wants to know if you're aware of his drinking habits." Jane supplied, including the dirty look Sam shot her.
"Oh, you mean… about you drinking demon's blood?" Chuck shifted uncomfortably. "Yeah, o-of course."
"You didn't tell Dean."
"I didn't even include it in the books."
Jane considered that. "Why not?"
"I was afraid it would make Sam look unsympathetic."
She snorted.
"Unsympathetic?" Sam echoed, ignoring Jane.
"Yeah Sam, I mean, sucking blood? Come on man, you got to know that it's wrong."
"Even God agrees."
"Jane, shut the hell up. He's not god." Sam growled, tempted to throw something at her. "Look, Chuck, it scares… the hell out of me." He took a deep breath. "I wish I could stop, I wish I knew how to stop."
"Come on, get up, we're leaving."
Sam and Jane looked up from their respective perches on the beds, where they had each been laying, pointedly ignoring one another. If the urgency in Dean's tone hadn't been enough to get them up and going, the way he was snatching up their stuff was. "Where?" They said together, shooting each other exasperated looks.
"Anywhere but here. Out of this motel, out of this fricking town. I don't care if we have to swim, we're leaving." Dean stopped and really looked around, frowning "Where are the hex bags?"
"He burnt them." Jane said flatly.
"You couldn't stop him?"
She cleared her throat, looking awkward. "I was, uh… in the shower at the time."
"Seriously Jane?"
"Look," Sam interrupted, not about to sit through one of their little tiffs. "If Lilith is coming, and that is a seriously big if-"
"No Sam, not an if. It's more than an if, all right? You know why that is? Because Chuck's not a psychic, he's a frickin' prophet."
"Oh shit."
"You need to leave, now."
"Castiel, get the hell out of my dream. I'm still not talking to you." Jane had serious doubts she would ever forgive Castiel for what he had done to Dean, even if he did insist it was for the 'greater good'. She wasn't even sure what she was dreaming, it looked… like she was trapped in a pitch black room but she could see him. Nothing else, just him.
Leaving had not worked out the way Dean had wanted, nothing had. He and Sam had sort of gotten into it and that had been bad. The things they had said, about Alastair, and what had happened… she knew that was going to cause some serious grief once this was over with. Providing they even survived… Dean had stormed out and she had apparently fallen asleep waiting on him to come back.
"Jane, you have to wake up and leave. Lilith is on her way."
"What?"
"She will kill you if she finds you here."
"But what about Sam?"
"He will be fine."
Jane stared at the angel, feeling consciousness tugging on her, struggling to keep herself here. "Where's Dean?"
"He is…" Castiel frowned. "I can't say, but he is safe, and he will be here."
She hesitated.
"Jane, wake up now."
And she did.
