Author's Note: Just a little fic I came up with after re-watching S3 08 (Cuts Like a Knife), rated T just in case, enjoy!
"Jane, I think you should have the wedding that you always wanted."
"One fantasy when I was younger does not constitute 'always wanted'," she protested.
"And besides, Fenway Park is a much more practical wedding destination for our loved ones to get to than mine."
Jane blinked. "You'd be willing to get married in Fenway?"
Maura nodded. "But you will not be getting married in a Red Sox jersey," she spoke firmly.
Jane grinned. "Ma wouldn't let me get away with that one anyway. How about a compromise?" Maura's eyebrows rose. "As long as you can guarantee the volcano won't go off, why don't we have your destination as the honeymoon?"
"Deal," Maura replied with a smile.
"And your wedding cake sounds good, though I should warn you," she added sheepishly, "there won't be any living with Ma if we don't have a layer of fruit cake."
"We can have that as the bottom layer, it's too weighty to be higher." She smiled. "Why don't we wait until we've finalised the guest list, then go for a tasting? We can check you like my choice, see which you might like for the other layers."
"Layers?" Jane repeated.
"Traditionally, there is a minimum of three, though the size of the guest list will dictate the number of layers our cake will have to be."
"I will bow to your expertise on that one. Oh, and we're going to have to involve Ma with the guest list, make sure we don't accidentally snub anyone from my side."
"I'm sure between the three of us, we'll manage to cover everyone. Is there anywhere else you would like to include her?"
"If you don't mind…" she trailed off and Maura waited. "I was thinking of asking her to help you with the flowers."
"Help me?" she repeated.
"I'm lousy with flowers, but between the two of you, they'll be beautiful and not something I hate."
Maura smiled. "And she's going to want to help you pick out your dress."
"She's going to want to help with yours too," she pointed out. She pulled a face. "I'd ask you to help with mine, save me getting stuck with a lace monstrosity, but I'm not sure if you want to stick to the 'bad luck to see the bride in her dress before the wedding' or not."
Maura gave Jane's hand a squeeze. "I would love to help you pick out your dress, and for you to be there when I pick mine." She grinned. "And I won't hold it against you when you don't cry."
"Ma will be crying enough for all three of us," she retorted. "So, that's everything we need to think about for the wedding, right?"
"Not even close," Maura stated with a smile. She pulled a clipboard toward herself. "I've made a comprehensive list."
"Of course you have," Jane sighed. "Hit me with it."
