The sun is nearly setting since the bear pack, Kenai, Koda, Comet, and Daylight were having so much fun in the Salmon Run, especially catching some fish. And now, they are gathering around with Tug since they are now playing a storytelling game. It is a game where one of the bears had the fish gets to tell a story and tosses to the other so they can tell their own. Comet, Daylight, and Kenai are new to this game, which Tug has given them a simple rule about storytelling.
"Alright, alright, settle down everyone, settle down. We wait. Hey, don't throw your fish bones over there. Somebody could choke on that." Tug said sternly, trying to get the bears to settle down and noticed a bear throwing a fish bone. "Look, ok, I'll go first. Ok, let's see. The most interesting thing that happened to me this year. Hmm...Oh, I know, I know. Listen to this. I'd say it was when I finally down that tree...that was blocking the view from my cave. Now I got a family of chipmunks staying at my place."
Tug and the bears started laughing, but he then noticed a chipmunk family glaring at him for mocking at their predicament which got him staring nervously and clearing his throat.
"Yeah. All right, all right, everybody, come one, let me see some paws in the air. Who's going to be next?" Tug asks while lighten the mood. "Come on."
The bear pack raises their paws in the air, wanted to be next for storytelling.
"Watch me, watch me." Tug said with a playful smirk, about to toss the salmon like a football, mimicking a throw and still onto it with a chuckle. "Hey, gotcha."
He then tosses the salmon with a laugh which an elder female bear caught it as she tells her story.
"This year, I lost my dear husband, Edgar."
"Quit telling everyone I'm dead!"
That got the bears attention, even Comet and Daylight who are confused, but the elder female bear is oblivious that her husband is still alive.
"Sometimes...I can tell hear his voice."
She then tosses the salmon in grief and sadness.
"I'm getting the next one." Koda said when a foreign bear caught then salmon, as he speaks in foreign language with a growl and a shout which the bears couldn't understand what he's saying, but the foreign bear laughs and it got them laugh nervously as he tosses the salmon while the bear tries to catch it. "This is it. I got it! I got it!"
Unfortunately, Koda tripped and fell to the ground while the salmon lands in front of him, which the adult male bear caught it as he looks at the female bear with a loving smile.
"I guess it's our turn. This is the year I met the most gorgeous..."
"No, you're gorgeous."
"You're gorgeouser."
"Get a cave!" Tug, Comet, and Daylight shouts as Nava chuckled at the two foals reaction while a foreign bear groans in annoyance, speaking foreign language again.
"If only Edgar was alive."
"I told you, woman! I'm right here!"
That shout was heard again, which gotten the bears attention and the elder female bear thought she could hear his voice.
"I love you, buttercup."
While the male bear throws the salmon, he then cuddles with the female bear.
"This has got to be it." Koda said, tries to reach it but failed and fell into the ground again while the salmon hit Comet in the face.
"All right, since you caught it, you two tell the story." Tug told them as Comet and Daylight thought of a story.
"This year, we went on a long journey to find the wolf pack after leaving the Crystal Empire and our families behind. It's a regretful choice, but we don't have a choice." Comet explains which Kenai heard that before. "So, during our first journey, we've encountered a wolf named Balto."
"He even told us why he was here, and we decided to help him find Aleu, his daughter." Daylight adds. "But along the way at the falls, we've encountered a fox, the cunning trickster. Of course, we couldn't trust her, but after Balto helped her, the fox pushed us down into the rapids."
The bear pack widen their eyes in shock at that story, which Tug, Kenai, and Nava were aware of the story.
"We were lucky we survived if it hadn't for Balto. We continued on our journey on the mountains, where we meet the wolverines. They keep telling us to go home while mocking us that we were afraid, which it made us realize that we have to face our fears no matter how bad our path takes us." Comet said. "But the next day during our journey, we found Aleu got into trouble for fighting the bear. We were able to get there just in time, but we're outmatch because of the size and strength. And what really surprised us is the Inner Knowing."
"Inner Knowing?"
"Can it be true?"
The bear pack, except Kenai and Tug, were whispering to themselves while Koda and the cubs are confused.
"Anyway, the Inner Knowing allows us to enter thoughts, and we saw what happens next." Daylight continued. "After we were out of the ledge, we were at the open area at the forest and saw a raven flying in the sky, which led us to the sea. But those three wolves named Nuk, Yak, and Sumac, they were trying to ambush us."
"Oh, those three, they're not very bright wolves." Tug states with a ponder, remembered those three wolves. "Especially Niju."
"Wait, you know them?" Daylight asks surprisingly.
"I met them, even Niju. He's a wolf who's nothing but an arrogant blowhard." Tug answered with a frown but cleared his throat. "Anyway, you were saying?"
"Thank you. But just they're about to kill us, the tide is coming and those three were trying to retreat, but Niju forces them to get back there and fight us." Daylight said, then turns to Nava. "Then, Nava and his clan came to help by having them to stand down. All except Niju, who's furious of him."
The bear pack are well-aware of Niju's behavior during his time with the wolf pack.
"Niju won't let us pass because Nava ask of him, but a killer whale spouts water in the air and right at him." Daylight continued which made the bears, Kenai, Tug, and Koda laughed.
"I wish I could've seen that look on his face, it's just too funny." Tug said with a laugh.
"Serves him right!"
"While Nava have us and the wolf pack gathered at the mountains, he told us the summer is almost past, and the caribou won't return." Comet said. "Because they have crossed the sea, and the only way to survive is to follow them. Niju refuses to listen because he wanted to become leader and take what they need for the other clans."
That got the bear clan shocked, which it didn't surprise Tug or Nava.
"Niju should've realize the consequences of his actions that'll cause the clans to fight each other, and he'll upset the balance between the spirits and the circle of life." Comet continued. "And the Great Aniu has told Nava what they must do. They must be led by the one who is wolf and does not know."
"Niju thought that crossing the Great Water is impossible, but it proves otherwise when the glacier is forming a path that will lead to the caribou." Daylight said. "You see, the last winter, the caribou cross an ice bridge to land on the other side, and the bridge is forming again."
Tug, Kenai, Koda, and the bear pack were awed at that story, beginning to realize why the wolf clan haven't come and now they know why, because they're on the other side of land to hunt for the caribou.
"Balto is leading the pack to the caribou, but Niju stayed behind and tried to tell them they'll all die. Nava was left stranded on the ice, and me, my sister, and Aleu came to help him." Comet said. "Niju somehow got into the ice and tried to kill us, but Balto stops him and about to fight him. The raven even showed us that the wolf pack is left stranded without a leader. We were about to leave, but Niju blocked our path and not caring out the wolf pack anymore. He only cares about survival."
The bears were even shocked, but some are angry of Niju's actions, even Tug felt disgusted of the black wolf.
"The choice have put us in a bind, and Nava won't be able to get to them in time. Niju won't lead because he won't leave the land since it's been his home for as long as he remembers. And only one wolf who will lead the pack to the caribou...Aleu." Daylight told them, sighs. "Even though, it's hard for Balto and us, that she had to lead the wolf pack and realizing that it's her true purpose, for her to be the leader of the pack. And so, Aleu left with saying goodbye to us and her father and given us a howl for a farewell."
The bears look at the two foals with solemn look on their faces, given them sympathy. Comet and Daylight can only give them a sad smile since they've only known Aleu and Balto for a short amount of time, but they felt sad for having her to leave. But they'll always welcome among the wolf pack.
"All right, who's next?" Comet asks, changing the subject while lighten the mood as the bear pack raises their paws in the air as he tosses the salmon.
Koda then tried to catch it, but Kenai caught it.
"Here you go, Koda." Kenai offered the salmon with a chuckle.
"You got to tell it, Kenai." Koda told him with a sigh.
"What?" Kenai said, confused as he turns to Tug.
"That's right, Kenai." Tug agrees. "You caught it, you tell it."
"Didn't you play this game when you're a cub?" Koda asks, raising his eyebrow as the bears wanted Kenai to tell a story.
"Okay, alright already, alright." Kenai said, waving his paw to get them to calm down. "You want to know what I did this year?"
"Yeah!"
"I went on the longest, hardest, most exhausted journey I've been on, with the biggest pain in the neck I've ever met. What do you expect from a little brother?" Kenai told them, mentioned about Koda, who gave him a sad look which Kenai gave him noogie and make him laugh, as he tosses the salmon to him. "Okay, buddy, your turn."
"Let's hear it, Koda." Tug said with a chuckle.
"Okay, okay. Here we go." Koda said, clearing his throat as he thought of a story. "This year, I watched my mom in a life-and-death struggle against all odds battling against possibly, the most fiercest creature on the face of the earth. Okay, who's next?"
"What?" Kenai, Comet, and Daylight said surprisingly, and the bear pack weren't convinced.
"Wait, wait, wait, wait a minute." Tug said, waving his paws and then turns to Koda. "I think we all want to hear the rest of that one, Koda."
"I thought you might say that. Let's see." Koda said, pondered as he thought of a story. "It was probably the 5th or 6th most coldest day, in my entire life. Me and mom were eating fish, having a great time, when all of a sudden, she pushes me into the bushes, and tells me to be real quiet. She said, 'I smell something', so I started sniffing. There is something in the woods, running right toward us, getting closer and closer."
One of the bear cubs gasped, hiding from behind the adult bear and Kenai can only chuckle. Comet and Daylight knew what happened since they were there with Denahi, Sitka, and Kenai.
"And then, out of the trees, jumps the hunter!" Koda continued which made Kenai widen his eyes and the bear pack gasps. "And now there's nowhere for mama to go. The monster has her backed up against this giant glacier! The monster attacks! But mom's too quick for him. And before he can do it again, she stands up real big and yells, 'Go away'!"
Kenai starts to pant, remembered when he was a stallion hunting a bear and trying to take her down, but the bear who happens to be Koda's mom scares him and got him fell down to the edge of the cliff. Comet, Daylight, and Nava turns to Kenai, notices him remembering the time fighting against the bear.
"Then mom smells more of 'em. There's a whole pack coming right at us!" Koda continued, then Kenai remembers warning Sitka the bear behind him. "She runs out to stop them, before they can get to me. And all around they're poking her with sticks. The whole thing broke, and they fell into the water. There was ice everywhere! She couldn't hold her breath any longer before, pow! She burst out of the water. I've been so scared of my life."
Kenai then remembered Sitka, Comet, and Daylight fighting the bear, saving Denahi, and his older brother sacrificed himself to save his brothers from the bear. The glacier breaks apart and the mother bear burst out of the water, swimming away from the river to look for her son. Kenai then remembered him hunting the bear for vengeance, and the whole reason why he turned himself into a bear as guilt starts to show all over his face with a pant.
"Whoa! Fell off the glacier! I've seen anything like that." Tug said in shock. "Can you imagine?"
Kenai then started to pant heavily with dread.
"Kenai?" Koda called him, earned his attention. "What's the matter, Kenai?"
"Koda, so what happened next? Was she okay?"
Kenai slowly backs away, tried to leave when he bumps into Tug.
"Hey, Kenai, what's wrong?" Tug asks, but Kenai only ran off. "Where are you going?"
"She got out of the water okay, but that's how we got separated. Right after that, I met Kenai, Comet, Daylight, and Nava." Koda said, but noticed Kenai isn't here. "Kenai?"
Comet, Daylight, and Nava noticed Kenai running into the forest since he finally remembered about the bear and killing her, that caused him to upset the spirits and turning into a bear. They decided to give him some time alone at the mountains since they're close to the light touches the earth.
The sun is nearly setting, and Kenai is lying on the edge of the cliff alone with a solemn look on his face. He slowly starting to realize of what he did to Koda's mother and why his brother, Sitka, is disappointed of his action and punished him by transforming into a bear. He begins to wonder if he'd tell Koda about the death of his mother. Koda slowly creeps up to Kenai with a smirk on his face, roars and then jump on him.
"Scared you again, huh?" Koda said with a laugh.
"Yeah." Kenai said sadly as Koda got off of him while he sat up.
"Where have you been? You look awful." Koda said which Kenai tried to call him. "My mom says when you eat too much fish, you should just lie down..."
"Koda." Kenai called him. "There's something I, you know that story you told me last night?"
"Yeah." Koda answered.
"Well, I have a story to tell you." Kenai told him.
"Really? What's it about?" Koda questions, grabbing some berries.
(No Way Out-by Phil Collins)
"Well, it's kind of about a stallion, and about a bear. But it's mostly about a monster, a monster who did something bad..."
Then, Kenai tells Koda a story about himself hunting the bear cubs' mother for vengeance and anger. Koda is slowly starting to realize why his mother isn't here at the Salmon and why she's not searching for him. Kenai then confesses to him.
"Koda, I did something very wrong." Kenai said with guilt.
Koda then widens his eyes, slowly backs away from fear.
"I don't like this story." Koda said as Kenai slowly looks at him with a sad and guilty look on his face.
"Your mother is not coming." Kenai admits.
"No...No!" Koda cried as he flees.
"Koda!" Kenai called him.
Koda ignored his plea, kept on running on the wintry night through the forest while Kenai chased after him, but stops to look for him. Koda ran to the tree, climbs and hide while quietly cried in tears in great sorrow.
"Koda! Koda! Koda!" The voice of Koda called him, tried to look for him. "Koda, I wish I could...If there was some way...I'd give anything if, I could just..."
Koda can hear him pleading for his forgiveness but stayed hidden. Kenai gave up the search as he sighed, then he notices a bear print as he marks it as a hoofprint.
"I'm sorry, Koda. I'm so sorry." Kenai said in sadness, decided to leave the Salmon Run and head for the mountain where the light touches the earth.
(Music Ends)
Comet, Daylight, and Nava heard everything what Kenai told Koda, which they can tell he felt very guilty of his actions and finally admit for what he did. Of course, Kenai should've listened to Denahi's warning, but with butting each other's heads because of pranks and messing each other's chores, the younger brother let anger and vendetta cloud his judgement.
Comet, Daylight, and Nava follows Kenai to the mountain without Koda knowing. Koda climbs down to the snowy ground, watching Kenai leaving as he turns his head away.
At the mountain, Denahi is trying to warm himself next to the fire while wrapping himself in pelt. Chattering his teeth and has bags under his eyes, as slowly looks down to see the fire gone out because of the wintry wind.
"I sorry, Kenai. I don't what I'm doing anymore." Denahi said sadly. "I need help."
Suddenly, Denahi turned his head and saw an eagle perching, looking at him which made him shocked. The eagle cawed, flying and Denahi is realizing who it is.
"Sitka?" Denahi said but stood up as he grabs the spear and follows an eagle.
While back at the Salmon Run, both Rutt and Tuke somehow made it since they left Kenai, Koda, Nava, Comet, and Daylight in order to find another direction to get there, but the small moose had one of his antlers missing.
"Look, I am sorry!" Tuke told his brother with a groan.
"If I ask someone for directions, this never would've happened, eh." Rutt said angrily.
"Just stop it!" Tuke said.
"You never let me do anything." Rutt argued.
"Oh, trample off, eh!" Tuke snapped. "I said I was sorry, let it go!"
"I can't believe you got us lost!" Rutt said.
"Oh, come on, it wasn't my fault!" Tuke argued.
"I'm afraid I cannot accept your apology." Rutt told him.
"I said I was sorry!" Tuke said when Rutt notices Koda.
"Hey look." Rutt said which Tuke also noticed the bear cub in grief. "It's that little cub. Gee eh, something's bugging him."
"Hey, what's wrong, smallish bear?" Tuke asks.
"Nothing...I'm fine." Koda said, sniffled.
"Oh good. Now where we're we? Oh yeah." Rutt said as he pressed his nose against his brother angrily. "You're a big selfish, reckless hoofer, and you're never gonna change."
"What?!" Tuke exclaims shockingly, scrunches his nuzzle while Rutt walks away.
"I'm fed up with it, eh." Rutt said, walking to Koda and then turns to Tuke. "From now on, he's my new brother."
"You can't do that!" Tuke protests.
"Sorry, you've been replaced with my dear brother...I forget your name." Rutt said when he lays on the ground next to Koda and nuzzles him, which made the bear cub upset. "What's your name again, little bear?"
"I don't want any more brothers!" Koda snapped, pushes Rutt away and looked away.
"See, he's had enough of you too, eh!" Rutt told him, turning to Tuke.
"Oh, come on. I promise I can change." Tuke said.
"Trample off, you'll never change." Rutt snapped, then turns away. "Being a brother means nothing to you."
"Of course it does, eh." Tuke remarked which Koda is watching them.
"Oh yeah? Like what?" Rutt questions.
"What about the time your hooves froze in the pond? Who sat with you all winter, eh?" Tuke questions.
"You did." Rutt answered.
"And who showed you where the good grazing is? I mean the really tender stuff, all covered in dew?" Tuke questions again.
"Now, why do think I did that, eh?" Rutt counters with a question.
"Because I...Because I love...dew." Tuke answered.
"Excuse me? I don't believe I heard with you said." Rutt said, turning to his brother.
"I said I love dew." Tuke told him, repeating his words.
"I love dew too, eh." Rutt replied as Tuke walks next to him.
"Hey, I can change." Tuke said, lightly taps him with his hoof.
"Go away, eh." Rutt said.
"Come on, I can change." Tuke said again, this time nudges him with his antler.
"Go away, eh. Don't touch me." Rutt told him, turning away.
"I can change!" Tuke said with a smile, tickling Rutt with his antlers and it got them laughing.
"Not there, that's the spot." Rutt said which got him smiled as he stood.
"Like, we'll see you later, smallish bear." Tuke told the bear cub, rubbing his head and then he and his brother left.
"Yeah. Good day, eh. Hey, you know what this calls for?" Rutt asks. "A pile of delicious barley and amber weed on a cool bed of malted hops?"
"I like it." Tuke agrees.
Koda then turns when he notices Kenai really is heading to the mountain where the light touches the earth on his own. He began to realize that Kenai felt really guilt and wanted to forgive him, which he's too angry at him for what he did. He decided to go after Kenai to help him.
Finally at the Mountain Where The Lights Touch The Earth, Kenai climbed all way up to the mountain and hoping for his brother to turn him back into a stallion.
"Sitka! Sitka, are you there? Please! Please, Sitka!" Kenai pleads sadly. "I don't know what else to do."
Then, he saw something at the sky and notices a shadow figure that looks like an eagle flying down.
"Sitka?" Kenai said, but unfortunately, Denahi leaps down and pulls his hood with an angry look. "Denahi!"
Denahi lets out a battle cry, charging after him with his spear ready.
"Sitka, hurry! Change me back!" Kenai shouts.
But just as Denahi is about to kill him, Kenai stops him with his paw at the shoulder. Denahi tries to thrust his spear, which Kenai quickly pushes him down to the ground and ran. Denahi grabs his hind leg, tumbling Kenai down as he then climbs on top of him which the bear pushes him away and kicks him in the face.
"Where are you, Sitka?" Kenai shouts again as he stands on his hind legs.
Denahi jumps in midair, and grabs hold him, wrapping around his neck with his spear while dragging him down to the cliff which knocks them out. Denahi stood up, slowly walking to Kenai as he pulls out the dagger.
"Denahi, please." Kenai pleads weakly.
But just as Denahi was about to kill him, Koda came to the rescue by knocking him down to the ground and making him lose the dagger.
"Koda?" Kenai said surprisingly, but Koda can only stand with a pant.
Denahi stood up and see Koda, turns to see Kenai stands up with a roar. He then looks for a spear as he goes after it, but saw it front of him which Koda noticed it and ran.
"No!" Kenai shouts as he ran after them when Koda grabs the spear and tried to take it away, but Denahi chased after him. "Leave him alone!"
Koda tripped and lost the spear, but Denahi grabs it and about to impale Kenai when the eagle flies down to them, which causes the lights from the mountain shines. Denahi pants heavily, slowly opened his eyes and it got him shocked when he saw the eagle was able to grab hold of Kenai just in time, descending him down as winter turns to spring once more. Kenai is now turning back into a stallion, leaving Denahi completely stunned.
"Kenai?" Denahi said in disbelief when Comet, Daylight, and Nava appeared and the eagle turned into Sitka, who approached his brother and grabbing his spear, unwrapping the bear totem. "Sitka?"
Sitka just quietly assures him, then pulls a cloak and walking to Kenai. Denahi then looks at the spear, which made him realize that the bear was actually Kenai the entire time and he almost killed him, tossing his spear away. Sitka drapes the cloak around Kenai with a smile, which it got his attention.
"You knew? You knew and never told me?" Denahi asks, turning to the foals.
"Don't be too hard on those young ones, they had a very good reason not to say anything." Nava told him with assurance. "But if they ever told you, would you believe it?"
Denahi was stunned that he could actually talk to the elder wolf, but realizing that Nava made a valid point as he decided not to pry. They then heard a roar that's coming from Koda hiding which made Kenai very sad as he slowly walking to him. Kenai kneels down, but Koda backs away.
"Koda. Koda, don't be afraid. It's me." Kenai said which Koda realizes that it's actually him, jumps on to him as he embraces the bear cub which Denahi felt guilty for that.
Kenai and Koda break the hug, but hugs again as he turned his head to Sitka, who gives the bear totem to him. He then looks at the totem and a bear cub which it made him finally understands the meaning of love. He sighs and turning to Sitka.
"He needs me." Kenai said which Denahi begins to understand.
"You know, he did look better as a better." Denahi said with a smile which made Sitka turning to Kenai with a smirk.
Kenai chuckled at that, but his expression turns to sadness since he's going to leave everything behind to be with Koda.
"But...Denahi..."
"It's alright, Kenai." Denahi assures him, walks to his brother as Kenai puts Koda down which gotten the bear cubs attention when he saw the spirit of his mother, but Comet and Daylight turns and saw the spirits of his birth parents which gotten them filled in tears as they approached them. "No matter what you choose, you'll always be my little brother."
Kenai and Denahi then hold their hooves which made Sitka proud of him as the younger brother turns back into a bear with a hug.
"Whoa, did I say little?" Denahi asks jokingly which made Kenai laughed and Sitka hugged his brothers.
They turned and saw Koda hugging his mother along with Comet and Daylight hugging their birth parents. It's time to leave as Sitka, Koda's mother, Mary, and Chris depart and joining with the spirits. Koda happily jumps onto Kenai, who tumbled to the ground as they, Denahi, Comet, and Daylight were playing.
(Great Spirits-by Tina Turner)
Few days later, the tribe are beginning the ceremony for Denahi becoming Chieftess Tanana's successor as the village shaman. Chieftess Tanana walk past her tribe with a torch, Denahi walks next to her with a smile as she passes the torch to him, who throws it at the makeshift totem as they cheered. Chieftess Tanana hugs Denahi since she's proud of him for fully embraced his totem and hoping for Denahi to share the wisdom of his tribe. The tribe then makes a path for Kenai, Comet, and Daylight, who walks past them with smiles on their faces and Koda watches them while Nava smiles, feeling proud of them. Denahi officiates Kenai, Comet, and Daylight's ceremony to place their prints on the wall of their ancestors.
The tribe gave them a cheer for them as Denahi, Comet, Daylight, Kenai, and Koda embraced each other with smiles on their faces. The eagle known as Sitka watches his bothers, proud of them as he flies away with a caw.

That's it for the 12th chapter.
Alright, that's all for the Brother Bear and Wolf Quest chapters. I'll be working on the aftermath for the future chapter.
