Chapter Two
I nodded. I loved Joe, and had since we were kids. That history had to mean something, didn't it?
He yanked me into a hug and kissed my ear. "We're going to be so happy, Cupcake. I love you."
I smiled, but inside, my gut was churning. Was I going to break Ranger's heart? He had said many things and didn't seem to be bluffing when he offered to marry me, but he hadn't talked of love. Was this the right thing to do?
We talked about his trip to Miami for a while, and then I told him I needed to take care of some things and left. What the hell was I going to do now?
I got in my car and just drove without a particular destination in mind. I couldn't stay at Morelli's while I was engaged to Ranger. I couldn't go to Ranger's while I was engaged to Morelli. I had too many fiancés and needed to figure out what to do about that.
Before I even realized where I was going, I arrived in Point Pleasant. Other than my bed, which wasn't available, this was the place where I could do my best thinking, and boy, did I really need to think about how to get myself out of the predicament in which I'd found myself. How could I say yes to two men? I thunked my head on the steering wheel and flushed when a quick Beep sounded.
I slowly got out of my SUV and started walking toward the boardwalk. I needed some food, preferably something that came on a stick.
After a large ice cream cone and a funnel cake, I was ready to do some serious thinking. I strolled down to the beach, sat on a bench and took off my shoes and socks. After stuffing the socks in my shoes, I walked along the beach and luxuriated in the feel of the warm sand squishing through my toes. I plopped down on the sand and watched the water for a while, the sun beating down on my face. What's that smell? Is that…Christmas? And cookies?
I jerked around and saw Diesel standing just behind me, smiling brightly. "Hi, Sunshine," he greeted me happily as he dropped beside me. "You seem to have gotten yourself in a pickle."
"What the…? How do you know?" He just smiled enigmatically but didn't reply, so I continued. "I have, yep. And I came here to think about what the heck I'm going to do about it."
"That's where I come in, Sunshine. I can help you with that."
"How can you help me?" I asked in confusion.
"I can't tell you, but I can show you. You just gotta trust me and come with me."
Immediately suspicious, I narrowed my eyes. "Come with you where?" Diesel and I didn't have a good track record of staying out of trouble whenever we were together.
He grinned. I forgot he had that ESP thing going on. "Ahh, c'mon, doll, we're not that bad together."
I rolled my eyes. "I noticed you didn't answer the question."
"And I won't. Trust me. This will be good, and I promise you won't be in any danger."
I blew out a breath. My life couldn't get any worse, so I guess I had nothing to lose.
