Log 004: Shattered

The sun shines into a room white as ice. A knock is heard from a door, as someone fights to continue in their sleep. The door kindly opens as Klein Sieben, Schnee Family's butler, enters the room.

"You should really let me clean your room Ms. Weiss" Klein exclaims. "Some sunshine might be good for you."

Weiss grunts from inside her bed sheets. Klein lets out a sad sigh, as he lets a silver tray with neatly fancy breakfast.

"I'll leave this here. Your father does want you to prepare for his event, your singing would make it more lively." Weiss doesn't respond.

Klein is about to leave the room, his eyes looking at the cold golden door knob. His sudden sight suddenly lightens and kindly turns towards the bedridden Weiss.

"Your sister also wants to speak with you before she is deployed!"

As the door closes, a messy Weiss finally rises, with a gentle smile appearing to shine over her blackened dry eyes.

Winter Schnee is seated in a very nice cafe in the futuristic city of Atlas. People walk with their pets, both with extravagant adornments. The tiles of the street shine in a pure white, reflecting the people that walk over it. The tall skyscrapers reflect the sun, making the city shine brightly, warming up the cold reality of the environment that engulfs Atlas. The black coffee emits a white vapor as it's left in Winter's table. Her cold stern face breaks as she sees through the vapor Weiss arriving, the muted blues in her fancy clothes breaking the white shine of the city.

"Sorry I'm late, sis." Weiss says between her heavy breaths. Winter sips her coffee. Weiss says down as she's surprised that a Tea arrives.

"You're just in time." Winter says smiling at Weiss. "Finally got out of your room, that's great!" Weiss frowns as she lets an uneasy laugh.

"I know it's been hard, Weiss. That's why I wanted to see you." Winter looks at her coffee. "I'm going to Atlas' borders because of the increase of Grimm activity and immigration. I won't be able to see you in a while." Weiss is visibly saddened, as her idol leaves again.

Winter puts her hand on Weiss' shoulder. "Weiss, not only I called you to see you, but the same informant has been traveling with your friends at Beacon." Winter is almost blinded by how Weiss' eyes lighten up.

"Ruby?! Yang?! Blake?! Nora?! Ren?! Jaune?" Weiss exclaims ecstatic.

"Sadly from Blake I have no information" Winter sips disappointed with her coffee, "But Yang seems to be healing well and the rest are traveling towards Mistral with the informant. That's how we know about immigration and Grimm activity, they've had trouble getting on to transport, but apart from that, they're doing good."

Weiss smiles, drinking her Tea. "However, even if the ability to contact them is low to bad, I know you haven't tried when you should." Weiss hides her glance. "Weiss, promise me that you will. Those connections are what keeps you in reality." Weiss looks at her sister. "Look around you, Atlas exists in a shining veil, hiding what happens in the mines, the borders and other places within, let alone the rest of the world. This is not the reality of the world, you not only have seen it but have experienced it." The world around the two sister mutes. "As much as our father wants to protect you from it, you have to decide to either live in ignorance or get better from those experiences."

Weiss ponders as she finishes her tea.

"Do you want something else? I invite you." Winter comments. Weiss melts a bit, looking at her sister.

"Can I get some cookies?" Weiss mutters.

A nice limousine arrives in front of a fancy clothing store. Weiss with bags of the many things she bought greets Klein in the driver seat. Winter helps Weiss to put the bags in the car.

"I'll be seeing you, Winter." Weiss says with a melancholic smile. "I… I really needed this!"

Winter smiles back, only to be surprised as Weiss hugs her before she could say anything. Klein looks at the two sisters happy that Weiss has rejuvenated.

"Weiss, just remember what we talked about." Winter leads Weiss into the limousine. "I will." Weiss responds, making both Klein and Winter smile at her sisters wave as the limousine leaves.

"You look a lot livelier, Miss Weiss!" Klein cheerfully comments as they enter the highway.

"Yeah! Winter took me to a lot of shops and even invited me to some tea and cookies!" Weiss happily exclaims as she excavates her bags. "I even got some things for Ruby, Yang and Blake when we see each other again! I think Ruby will look very good with this bright scarlet top!" Klein just smiles as Weiss proceeds to continue telling him about her day with Winter, neither notices the smoke coming from the outskirts of Mantle.

A small poor town burns, the people of Mantle just looking from inside their wall like if a bird just shit on them. The Grimm kill and maw everything in their path, from the corpses, more rise. A family runs quickly into a barn house, the Grimm following their fear. They erupt into the barn, their teeth sinking into their flesh, protecting a small freckle boy with green eyes, brown hair and tan skin, his aunt throws him out of one of the barn's windows.

"Run Oscar!" She screams as the grim stabs her. "Live!" The white snow silences the barn as blood flows from it, death lingers.

Silently, with tears in his eyes, Oscar with his skinny and weak body is barely able to run towards the shore. The Grimm follow. If he had lived within Atlas, no, Mantle, he probably would have been in his first year at a hunters academy, but after his parents died to a White Fang revolt in the mines, he had to help his aunt. And now his feeble legs are running as his tears freeze the fear following him.

Oscar reaches a small boat in the shore's docks. Barely pushes it as the Grimm follows. The boat slowly goes away from the shore as some Grimm jumps towards him only to land into the icy waters, unable to reach him. Finally he drifts away from the snow that took everything, Oscar laying on the boat, alone, freezing.

"You can be a huntsman, young one." An old man's voice is heard in Oscar's head, as he finally passes out in the middle of the cold sea. And the people of Atlas and Mantle continue with their simple lives, as the smoke is consumed by the snow.
