Chapter 5
Fistfights and Interrogations
Alvin pulled back just in time but he felt the wind as the fist — with its brass knuckles — flew past his jaw. "Brass knuckles? Really?" he thought. He tried to reach for his own pistol (a 1911 military issue), but his opponent was already going for an uppercut. This time it hit Alvin right in the stomach.
All the air left his lungs and he staggered back. Simon was busy grappling with the other guy. He still had his pistol in hand, but his wrist was held fast so that he couldn't do anything with it.
Alvin's opponent, a mustached man, went for a third punch — again to the face — but Alvin blocked it with his forearm. Years of boxing practice made the movement second nature. The mustached man came at him again with a left hook, but the chipmunk ducked and planted two uppercuts into the bad guy's abdomen.
His opponent staggered back, surprised. But Alvin smiled. Unlike Simon, who preferred the science of detective work, this was wear Alvin was most happy.
Mustache went for a straight punch, but Alvin pivoted and the fist zoomed past his face. With a right hook, the chipmunk's fist collided with the bad guy's jaw. Alvin jabbed, and it was blocked, but a follow up punch pushed the criminal back into the brick wall of a building.
Just at that moment, Simon stumbled back, tripping over a trashcan in the process. His nose was bleeding. His opponent charged forward, but Alvin cut him short with a solid tackle. They hit the ground hard, Alvin's hat flying off his head. They rolled back and forth, the bad guy getting on top, then Alvin put his feet on the man's stomach and pushed.
The opponent was airborne, flipping over Alvin's head and landing sprawled on his back.
Alvin finally was free to pull his pistol. In a fluid movement, he leapt to his feet, drew the gun from his shoulder holster and leveled it at the bad guys.
"Step back!" he shouted. "Now!"
The opponent on the ground stayed there. Meanwhile the mustached guy, seeing the pistol trained on him, raised his hands and backed off. Simon raised his own .38 again.
"Now," Alvin said. "How about we get you fellas in an interrogation room down at the precinct? Si, go call for a squad car to pick these boys up."
Simon did just that, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket and dabbing at his nose in the process. Alvin felt a sting on his lip and brushed it, feeling warm blood. He got hit harder than he thought.
"It doesn't matter," he thought. "It will be all worth it when I question these guys. It's got to be connected to the theft. It just has to be!"
Less than an hour later, Alvin and Simon were in the hallways of the police department. Both of them kept smiling with excitement. The two thugs they fought were currently sitting in separate interrogation rooms, waiting to be questioned. If this really had to do with Dr. Miller's necklace, then this was bigger than a simple street robbery. Who knows, maybe it had something to do with organized crime!
A police officer passing by raised his eyebrows as he passed them.
"They got you guys pretty good!" he said.
"Don't worry, they got their fair share!" Alvin answered.
Hurried footsteps made Alvin and Simon's heads turn. Theodore was rushing down the hallways towards them.
"What on earth happened?" he exclaimed. "You both got in a fistfight?"
Simon's big brother instinct kicked in, giving him some sympathy. But Alvin just smiled and patted his little brother on the back.
"It's all good, Theodore," Alvin said. "We won the fight."
Theodore shook his head. He was a great cop but he could also be a worrywart about his brothers.
"How did you know we'd gotten in a fight anyways?" Alvin asked.
"We called in a squad car, Al," Simon answered. "He probably heard it on the police scanner in his car."
"Oh yeah, that would probably make the most sense." Of course Simon would be the logical one.
"What ended up happening between you and the reporter?" Simon asked.
"Eleanor?" Theodore asked.
"Oh no," Alvin thought. "He's using her first name."
"Turns out she loves food! So I told her there's a great place around town to go eat. We're getting lunch tomorrow, since I'm off shift."
"Great, you both love food, and they're both geniuses," Alvin cast a glance at Simon. "You're all matches made in heaven."
"Huh?" Theodore asked.
"I asked out Dr. Miller," Simon said.
"Woah, woah, woah, what?" Theodore gasped. "Simon, that's great news! I don't think I've ever seen you go out with a girl before!"
Simon went crimson but Alvin laughed. "Yeah, come to think of it," the red-tied chipmunk said. "I thought you were spawned in a tube somewhere."
"Ha ha, you're all hilarious," Simon said in a tone that meant the complete opposite.
"You're going to have to tell me the story, Si," Theodore said, but just at that moment Officer Roger — a friend of all three brothers — approached. The look on his face wasn't promising.
"Roger, are we ready to go in?" Alvin asked, rubbing his hands together.
"I hate to be the bearer of bad news, boys," Officer Roger said.
"What is it?" Simon asked.
"Captain Seville is going to be doing the interrogations."
"What?" Alvin and Simon exclaimed at the same time.
"He said he would put the report on your desks," Officer Roger answered with a shrug.
"He can't do that, can he?" Alvin asked Simon, who (for the first time after being asked a question about the rulebook) shrugged.
"So what are we supposed to do?" Simon asked.
"Just sit and wait, I guess. He said it wouldn't be long," Roger replied. "Sorry, fellas."
"Why on earth would the Captain take our interrogation from us?" Alvin demanded.
Simon and Theodore seemed just as confused as he was.
"I guess all we can do is wait for that report," Simon said. "C'mon, Alvin, we have some paperwork to do."
Simon left and Theodore started to walk away too when Alvin said, "Hey, Theodore, can I talk to you for a second?"
Theodore stopped as Alvin caught up with him and waited for Simon to be out of earshot. "I have a favor to ask you."
"Sure, what do you need?"
"Well, here goes…"

Just a reminder that I DO NOT OWN any part of ALVIN and the CHIPMUNKS. ALL credit goes to the creators and owners. No money is made from this story. It's all for fun.
And here's a mystery novel recommendation: The Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz. It's a fun mystery where the author is the detective.
