Chapter 15

Gunplay

CRACK!

The criminal's gun went off and struck the vinyl booth to Alvin's right, sending a puff of foam into the air.

CRACK! CRACK!

Alvin dove over the diner's counter as another bullet struck a ketchup bottle, exploding the glass and splattered condiment. He drew his own gun — the 1911 that carried him through the war. Simon already had his own .38 special in hand. Even Theodore had his own pistol.

Alvin glanced around the corner of the counter just in time to see the criminal shove open the door to the diner and escape!

"SI, THEO!" Alvin shouted. "He's getting away!"

The trio leapt to their feet and barreled out of the diner, hot on the heels of the criminal. He was already crossing the street, nearly getting hit by a milk truck on the way. Pedestrians were shoved out of the way, some falling over.

"After him!" Alvin yelled.

A car squealed to a hot at the street corner as Alvin leapt into the road, and he jumped just in time to slide over the hood while the driver honked at him.

CRACK!

The criminal ahead had stopped just long enough to fire a shot, and Simon felt the bullet whizz past him. Theodore was nowhere to be seen. Where had he gone?

Alvin was catching up to the bad guy. His hat flew off his head as he gained on the thug, who crossed the busy street and nearly got ran over by cars.

"STOP!" Alvin shouted, and fired a bullet into the air as a warning shot.

It didn't do anything! The criminal kept running, diving into an alley on the other side of the street. He threw trashcans down to try and make Alvin stumble. He was nearly to the end of the alley!

Suddenly, with a screech, Theodore squealed Alvin and Simon's car to a halt right at the mouth of the alley, cutting off the bad guy's exit.

The criminal slid to a halt, but instead of stopping he turned and started climbing the fire escape of the building to their left. Up he went, and Alvin followed right after him, with Simon close behind.

Soon they reached the top of the building and Alvin and Simon both raised their guns.

"There's nowhere to go!" Alvin said. "Unless you want to jump off the roof!"

The criminal growled, "You'll never take me, copper!" And he jumped off the edge of the roof!

Alvin and Simon sprinted over, terrified of what they might see, but to their surprise, the criminal had landed on the roof of a smaller building next door.

"Crap!" Alvin snapped. "Come on!"

With a shout, Alvin jumped, his tie flapping in the air, and landed with a thump on the gravel roof of the building, where he rolled to a stop.

The bad guy was running, but he seemed like he hurt his leg when he jumped, because he was going more slowly now.

Alvin quickly caught up, leapt, and tackled him to the ground with a crunch. With the butt of his pistol, Alvin quickly knocked the guy out.

"Simon, tell Theodore to get on the radio and call a squad car," Alvin panted. "Oh, and tell him to bring his handcuffs. I left mine in the car…"

There's a quick chapter for you all! Like I said, it doesn't have anything to do with the main mystery, but is based on side missions you can do in the video game L.A. Noire. Hopefully you enjoyed it!

Also, I just posted a new chapter to my other work-in-progress: Indiana Jones and the Forbidden Eye, so please go and check that out!

Have an awesome day!
