Chapter 16

File Searching

"Dollar Bills, Dollar Bills…" Simon muttered as he flipped through files.

Theodore was shuffling through drawers, trying to find something relating

to the gang. So far they had found nothing. The Dollar Bills were sneaky to say the very least.

Alvin was flopped in a chair, his tie loosened, and running a hand through his hair.

"We've been working on this for hours," he groaned.

"Who is we?" Simon asked. "Theodore and I have done most of the work!"

"Hey, I've been supervising, the hardest job of all," Alvin said, taking a long swig off hot cocoa from the mug at the desk nearby. "We need more cocoa."

"How is it possible that there is NO mention of them anywhere?" Theodore asked nobody in particular.

"This is one of the most successful gangs in LA, if those criminals are to be believed," Simon said.

"How do we know the criminals were telling the truth?" Alvin asked. "Maybe they were lying to get us off their butts."

"I don't think they were, Alvin," Simon replied. "Making up a fake story about communicating with them, and then Jeanette's ransom note. It's all too verifiable."

"Well whatever it is, it's exhausting," Alvin grabbed the pot they had brought in. "I'm making more cocoa."

He walked out of the file room of the police department, mug in hand, when Theodore caught up with him.

"Hey, Alvin," the younger brother said, his voice low.

"What's up, Teddy?"

"I figured this was a good time to talk to you. I got that one file you requested… remember, when you asked me for that favor?"

"Oh that's right!" Alvin said. "I nearly forgot about that!"

"I put it in my bag, so you can take a look at it at home."

"You're a life saver, Theodore." Then he noticed the look in his brother's eye. "Is something wrong?"

"I just felt a little strange doing it. Why did you need that file?" Theodore asked.

"It's nothing to worry about, Theodore. It's just some research. Confirming a suspicion, that's all. Hey, would I lie to you?" Theo thought about it, which made Alvin ruffle his hair. "Of course not, little brother."

"Thanks, Alvin," Theodore said. "By the way, don't forget what you owe me."

Alvin rolled his eyes. "Alright, alright." He smiled. "I owe you an entire case of donuts from Darwin's. So long as I get one for myself, too…"

Theodore chuckled. "Of course!"

Later

After a day of fruitless searching, Alvin was in bed reading the file by the light of a lamp. Theodore had come through for him, calling in a favor and pulling a file from the Military itself. What a good brother!

And Alvin was right. He was absolutely right.
