Something I realized after I finished the first chapter is how I plan to keep track of my uploads. Since I want to work on consistency, I've decided to mark each chapter with the dates of when I began working on them & when I finished and uploaded them. Since I didn't do this for my first chapter I'll place the date in which it was uploaded. Unfortunately I can't remember when I started working on it but I'll place the date it was finished. And the date in which I began working on this chapter.

Chapter 1: Uploaded 7/7/2024

Chapter 2: Started on 7/8/2024

I'll place the date I finish and subsequently upload this chapter at the bottom in order to keep track, even if it's on the same day.

Something that hurts fanfiction and their authors in my opinion is consistency. There are some writers who upload on a consistent basis including one I follow who gives dates for his upcoming chapters. And when the expectations aren't met, I'll usually get a notification on their profile of them at the very least saying they couldn't do so and giving clarity.

Since I personally don't think I can give myself a schedule yet as I'm only just beginning, I'll start with these starting & finishing dates to give myself a constant reminder of how long it takes me to finish a chapter. Anyways, on to the story.

For Entle, it was a rush of images that flashed through his mind up until this moment. He remembered when his dear cried out in pain and called for help. It had begun.

She was ready to give birth.

From there he'd rushed to their village doctor for assistance in delivery of his child and the doctor had been nearby thanks to a prior notice of his wife's pregnancy. He'd assisted her in the ways he could help and the doctor arrived with a midwife and they got to work. He was told to wait outside until further notice. When he was finally asked to return, he could feel his worries gripping his heart and his throat dry.

When he returned to his wife's side, he saw their new child and was overtaken by a sense of joy. He felt proud, exhausted, and alert. But most of all, he felt a sense of fulfillment. A next step in his life. A new chapter had opened and he was fully ready to embrace it.

'I won't fail you, my son,' he thought as he gazed down on his sleeping child, a boy. He had a few strands of curled blonde hair, long earlobes that reached to his tiny waist, grayish blue eyes with prominent bottom lashes. Pale skinned like them and two wings pointing downwards. He was perfect.

Entle felt a lump in his throat he couldn't swallow. His eyes began to swim and his jaw trembled. But it wasn't out of sadness. It was out of joy. A joy he'd never felt before. As if a piece in his life's puzzle had just been found and put in place, he felt comfort in this sentiment. It was all overwhelming. He did not break down in wails but he began to cry softly, gently wrapping his arms around his most precious Khel.

She was stirred awake for a brief moment. And she shed light tears as well.

He wiped his eyes and his nose and did the same for his dear. His gaze was proud but Entle looked downward with his eyes closed and clenched a fist. "I promise you, my boy, I shall be here for you. I will never abandon you as I was. I will make sure of it. I will do my best to be your shield," he said just quiet enough that Khel could hear him and he felt his son too. She smiled weakly at him, already drained from her birth and was quite tired.

"I have calmed him down enough to rest. Please stay by our side, Entle, at least for today." She was about ready to fall asleep but Entle had a question just before she did. "My dear Khel, what should his name be?"

Khel thought for a moment before responding. "He is your son as well, I think I'll be pleased with your name for him." Entle blinked and one name popped into his head and said it without second thought. "Enel. His name shall be Enel. It's perfect for him."

"Then it will be. Our baby boy, Enel...," she murmured before letting a long yawn and allowing her body a much needed rest.

"Enel, born on the Sixth of May, in the year 1483 of the Kaienreki," Entle said as he finished speaking with the village's monk who in turn would make sure the information would be documented to the city's information log.

"I see," said Rimbert, Sigtuna's monk, colloquially known as "great geezer". An old fellow who had outlived many monks in his time but remained resilient and steadfast in his devotion to his village. "Thank you for your time Entle, and please, do consider coming by another time. It is always a pleasure to have you."

Entle smiled genuinely. Back when he had been abandoned by his father, he was looked after by his mother of course but lacked a father to look up to. Until he'd encountered Rimbert. The old monk had been the one to teach him many of his virtues such as patience and prudence.

He'd learned to be disciplined, resourceful, and charitable to his neighbors through Rimbert's teachings. Their first meeting had been an odd one but he would be forever grateful he'd met the "old geezer".

On a cold winter evening, a young boy traveled through the large forest in the town northwest of Sigtuna. He had departed to work as a temporary carpenter to aid his mother as they had a shorter supply of goods since his father had left some time ago. He trekked through the high trees, admiring the large things and smiled as he took in the tranquility of the surrounding forest. There were the occasional calls of the Three-Length Birds, flying high above the forest, either circling said forest or looking for prey. He watched as one took to its nest and fed its young some fish it caught. The chicks chirped for their meals and were joined by their parents in their meals.

He sighed. Things hadn't been the same since his father left his mother and him. For reasons he didn't know. His mother had told him that he shouldn't worry and his father hadn't left on bad terms. They were "deep yet simple disagreements" and where he'd gone, they couldn't as well. He had given Entle a long hug and told him to look after his mother. He left him soon after and told him that he'd leave something for him once he was a man. How he wished he knew why but his mother warned him not to pry.

"Nothing good ever comes from playing detective. You will only mourn the truth you weren't ready for," she'd tell him. It was a lesson she'd learned in her youth and passed it on to him. His vision swam and his lips wobbled but he sniffed and blinked. He had a task to complete after all. He'd been asked to send a message to his local monk by the contractor who'd hired him and in return be paid an additional sum. It would definitely help his mother and him.

'It's always nice passing through this patch of Vearth. We don't get as much as the Skypieans do but the forefathers have gathered enough throughout the centuries to make proper land of it.

The enormous proportions make up for the limited space. Of course it's nowhere near the size of Upper Yard.' As he felt a cold wind overtake him, he shivered. 'Of course being this far from the center of the Imperial Cumulus gives Birka a colder edge. I doubt they or the Shandians have ever felt such a winter before. It is always warm there from what I've heard.'

As he traversed the forest, he realized how dark it had gotten. The early night skies were always a sight to behold. A privilege, only the children of the skies could enjoy to its fullest. The stars were bright and clear from the altitude of the sky islands and the eternal expanse of the sea of stars were shown grandly. 'This is the peace I desire. A true calm in the storm of life,' he thought to himself. He hadn't realized he'd stopped and stood still, simply observing the sky.

"Oh?," a voice asked. Entle turned to see what appeared to be a monk a few feet away from him. His attire consisted of light purple robes, a white sash tied to his waist, and simple sandals. His robe had a small medal in the chest area. 'A monk,' he thought.

The monk continued. "What is your name, young man?," he asked him.

"Entle". He got up from his position to face the monk and bowed his head. "My name is Entle, Mr...?,"

The man chuckled. "Ah, but my manners. My apologies young Entle. Courtesy had left me for a moment there. My name is Rimbert. I am a monk from a village nearby." He walked up to Entle and offered his hand.

Entle shook it. "Don't worry sir. I didn't recognize your status and forgot to show my respects."

Rimbert shook his head. "No, my dear boy. I am at fault as well. We may forgive the other of their errors when they are repentant at heart, and it seems we both are. It is water under the bridge now," he said with a smile.

Entle silently appreciated the gesture and smiled as well. "Well...yes," he cleared his throat. "Ugrh. Pardon me, I mean to ask you why you stopped my star gazing?"

Rimbert raised an eyebrow before looking up at the sky. "Hmmm. A fellow star gazer aye? It's rare to meet a fellow man who enjoys watching the night sky."

Entle laughed. "Yeah well most are too complacent and slothful to take in the beauty of their surroundings".

"Indeed. Say young Entle, were you heading to Hovgården?"

"Hovgården?"

"It is the village east of this forest. I assumed you were headed there with a message seeing as how you've a mailbag with you."

Entle shrugged. "I was told to deliver a message by my boss who I'd worked with earlier today. Said he'd give me extra extols for the side job."

"I see. Well, it's gotten dark now. I know my way to and from the villages here. If you'd like, you can follow me to take you there as I've an assignment to complete there by the Council of High Priests."

"Really? What sort of...wait. An assignment. By...the Council itself?!"

Rimbert smiled at him with a gleam in his eyes. "Hai. I've been around for some time and so have the fruits of my work. I've been assigned to Sigtuna, but a message must be delivered to the neighboring settlements. To notify of my new post there. They'll need to know who to report to for a nearby monk and I'm the closest contact to the City and the Council as of late."

Entle nodded as he understood. "I see. Well, I'll be happy to accept your offer to take me to this village. Thanks Mister monk. Er...I mean...Rimbert."

He gave a well meaning smile and the monk patted his back. "Of course, young man. You know, history must be respected for it has a habit of biting us in the back when we least expect it. Sometimes, even moments such as these, they can serve us a nugget of information we may need for another time."

Entle raised an eyebrow but nodded. "I see sir."

"Good man, now let me take you to our destination."

Entle made sure to remember every piece of advice Rimbert might share from then on. The kindness of a stranger could go a long way, he'd learned that day. He'd do his best to emulate it.

"A good nugget of information indeed," Entle told himself as he carried a bundle of sticks in his arms. He'd been collecting a patchwork of leaves and sticks to set aflame with a flame dial for warmth in his home. Of course, taking trees and vearth was greatly frowned upon as only a lump collective of it could be distributed should the settlement's families agree upon it and have their monk's blessing to collect some together. Vearth, after all, was an object of eternal admiration for the inhabitants of the sky.

There was only one other forest on the whole island and it just so happened to be the territory of the Mälaren settlement. Tribe? He supposed it could be both as it was widely recognized by the Council and surrounding citizens in general as a nation state within the island of Birka itself. The specifics escaped his memory but they were responsible for producing most of the Birkan Warriors. They were generally seen to be barbaric yet disciplined, most of their village's warriors had a tattoo on their arms of sorts. Entle personally didn't get the reasoning there. He'd heard from Sahatori that some Shandians also wore tattoos or "tribal markings". "Maybe it's a pride thing. Or to be seen as battle scars? Who knows."

He arrived at his home and lit up the patchwork and opened some windows in his living room for sunlight. It was still the afternoon, Khel only having given birth a couple hours earlier.

"I'd best make something to eat for her." He paused. "But what about my little Enel."

He walked to the door, opened it to leave, and closed his house door behind him. "I think I'll visit the local housewives Khel speaks with on her own. They should know a recipe or two for a newborn." He smiled to himself with content. "To be a father".

"Does the Council still want the capital to expand? How much until the city dwellers are satisfied?!," Rimbert half yelled & half whispered as he read the latest news of the island. Articles didn't come around to the far out coast villages very often so what he'd read could've been turned down by the Holy Elder, but citizens wanted their voices heard. To be noticed.

Innovation was natural and to find more efficient courses of action to achieve a desired result was also natural in man. Whether it was from sloth or for a desperate need. But the expansion & industrialization part wasn't. Dial technology had been and still was a boon to both Birka and Skypiea alike when it was discovered and perfected throughout centuries. Even if it was used in less acceptable terms like Skypiea's ongoing war against the Shandians for the sake of Upper Yard. Which had lasted for centuries now.

He understood the importance of such a mighty gift from the heavens which had given the sky such a monumental amount of Vearth. But the war wasn't intended to last for this long now. It had simmered down in recent years as the Shandians had been forced onto a hidden settlement, away from Angel Island, most likely to prevent further outbreaks of violence between the two peoples. The gods of Skypiea had become more relaxed in recent history, either from the peace of mind that Upper Yard was more or less theirs or the weary tiredness of the long war still took tolls from the Divine Squad as the Shandians refused to give up on their homeland.

"Dangerous words there, Rimbert," he thought as he chuckled to himself. The Holy Elders of Birka had long since publicly and politically acknowledged Upper Yard as the Skypieans territory as the term itself Skypiea had become synonymous to the public as the general term for both the islands of Angel Island and Upper Yard. But he'd let his mind wander again. As it often did.

Going back to the articles he'd read, he thought about what his approach should be. The villages held monthly summits twice a year to discuss matters concerning just about anything, ranging from small annoyances to possible shifts in trade and resource handling. This news however, it would most certainly not be received well. Most newcomers in the far flung out settlements usually came from the city, dissatisfied with life there. "And the pleasures & decadence too, no doubt there," he snorted. The people liked their peace and quiet. And most families here have been situated here as well for countless generations. He'd even heard of a village in the south even claimed it held one of the founding Birkans from long ago.

Regardless, it was the job of village monks to stay informed as they were on average the source of news from the capital of Birka where the Holy Elder and Council were based.

"Well, the report won't come to me in my worried state right now so best I take a walk to clear my mind." He began to pack his papers and put his voice dial away. As soon as he left the monastery, he went towards the forest nearby. "Now there's a good place to be," he thought as he headed over there. People here and there waved to him and he waved back with a smile. Even if the tasks he worked and completed were tedious, it helped to keep the peace in the hearts of the village he'd served for so long that he reminded himself of the smiles of joyous children and the warm greetings from the villagers. Just as he was hard at work, so were they with their duties to their families and the village as a whole.

As he entered the forest, he noticed a small path veering off from the main one that was used regularly for travelers. He decided to head down the odd path, believing it must be an omen of good fortune. The best way for him to contemplate the talks ahead of him in the coming days. "The coming days eh? Must've forgotten how close the summit was. They're only twice a year and it was near the end of summer on the island. Hopefully I can arrange a proper meeting to ease any tensions," he said to himself.

As he followed down the trail, he noticed a spot to sit down by. He approached it and saw a figure whom he recognized. "Oh. Entle, is that you, my boy?"

Entle stopped what he was reading in his hands and looked at him. "Oh, Good Afternoon Rimbert," he replied. He scooted a bit to make room for Rimbert to sit next to him and he accepted the gesture with a nod. "Apologies Entle, I hope I didn't interrupt your readings."

"No, just trying to memorize these instructions here." He flipped the papers to show what appeared to be cooking instructions. "I asked some housewives my dear Khel enjoys talking to about baby foods. I need to learn some recipes at least while Khel is bedridden, even if she has likely already learned some prior to now." Rimbert "ahhh" 'ed in acknowledgement. "Well, congratulations on your family's newest arrival. I'm glad to hear that my dear Entle. I hope you are ready for the task of fatherhood ahead of you," Rimbert said. Entle nodded in understanding.

"Believe me, I've been preparing and looking forward to this as well. I know Khel has too."

Rimbert gave a light laugh as he patted Entle's back. "Truly, you are like the student I never had Entle. It is great news to hear from you. I take it Khel is in good condition?"

Entle smiled and nodded. "She is, thankfully. She's simply tired from giving birth. Our young boy, Enel, was born in the early morning. Just after midnight in fact."

"Ah, I see. And Enel…I take it it's a mix of your and Khel's name?"

"Indeed it is, I'm surprised you caught that so fast."

Rimbert tapped his temple as if to signify his vast intelligence. "Of course my dear boy. It's my job to put together vast reports from the city to inform the village, this was easier to figure out, of course."

Entle chuckled. "Yes I suppose that is the case. It occurred to me to name him after my father but I don't even know what he does. Or if he's still around. So Enel seemed like a proper name for him."

"Of course. Your father…," Timber started until he paused to think. Entle watched on.

"...Your father was…not an improper man. He dedicated himself to his craft which he enjoyed greatly and it was there where he met your mother too as I'm sure she has told you. He decided on things which would…take him out of Birka. Not anything immoral or outlawed…or too outlawed. He simply enjoyed experimenting and needed to go farther out to reach his dream."

Entle pondered on that before responding. "I don't what could possibly be so important as to leave one's own family behind," he started. Rimbert allowed him to continue. "...But I am not all knowing nor almighty. So whatever reasons he had, I can only hope that he found what he was looking for and found peace in his mind and heart after he left me and mother. If it was difficult on my mother, it must have been for him, or still is. I can only speculate. But what I can be sure of is that he had a dream to reach. I had one too and I believe I've reached mine in the best family I can lead. Now it is up to my son to reach his dream. In due time, of course."

Rimbert laughed as he nodded in agreement. "Of course! He was born earlier today, after all."

Entle grinned and began to stand up. "Yes. Well, I believe it is time for me to go now. I think I've memorized enough to attempt the recipes by myself. Have a wonderful rest of your day, Rimbert," he said as he waved a goodbye to the monk. Timber returned it and sat on his own.

"Perhaps that is the way to approach this news. What does the village as a whole dream of. How can I put it all together while respecting the Council and city dwellers' calls to my own village's dream all in one?"

Rimbert would sit in silence thinking of his solution for the rest of the afternoon and following evening.

Khel woke with a yawn and a stretch as she rubbed the sleep in her eyes. "Oh my, is it morning already?" She looked around and accepted her surroundings. "It seems it is morning. Entle has left for fishing already. The early bird catches the worm, he always says," she said to herself. It wasn't easy being a mother just yet but she would acclimate to it. Little Enel had woken up twice and had certainly made sure both his parents woke up to tend to him.

It had been two weeks since Enel had been born and she was slowly getting used to her new routine.

She walked to her son's crib and saw him peacefully slumbering away. With a kiss on his pudgy cheek, she set off to the kitchen to prepare their meals. Entle sometimes returned midday for lunch so she made sure to make him something and if he didn't, she'd simply add further portions to his lunch and make it his dinner in the evening. When she was finished, she went back to check on Enel and took him to the kitchen and fed him. As she did so, she looked back in her memories, when she'd once desired to feed a child of her own, take care of them, love them, and watch them grow. She smiled at her trip down memory lane and noticed her baby begin to smile as she did and sure enough, began to giggle. She giggled with him and they each shared a good laugh. "To share a wonderful laugh with my son, I shall remember this moment for today."

When she finished up at her home, she brought her son in a pouch in front of her to carry and set out for a walk. Or at the very least a stroll around the village, she was tired after all from simply staying indoors. She needed a walk!

The market was fairly quiet and she wanted to sightsee with her precious Enel. She noticed a familiar face and grinned as she slowly crept up to her and…

"Greetings Kura!"

The woman, now Kura, yelped and stood up straight. She slowly turned around and saw that it was Khel who had startled her, most likely intentionally. She pouted and huffed but soon returned the greeting with a light hug.

"Khel. I most definitely didn't expect…" She stopped and looked downwards at her friend's chest and noticed something. Someone. A person. Baby.

A very adorable and most definitely newborn baby.

Kura "Eeeeee!" 'ed at the sight of Enel and immediately began to pound Khel's senses with questions. "Who is that?! What's his name?! Oh he's so beautiful! A little bundle of joy! Oh his little ears are so cute! Can I hold him? Please oh please? May I? May I?"

Khel's eyes blinked back and forth at the questions and took a deep breath, held Kura by her shoulders, and put a hand to her mouth. "Mrbllmm?," she asked.

"Please Kura. Take a breath and calm down. He is very adorable, as is expected of my son. She felt Kura's mouth stretch and watched as her eyes widened. She continued. "But you must calm down. Now what was your question?"

Kura inhaled and exhaled and smiled at her friend. "I…I asked if this baby is yours but you've already answered it I suppose. How are you Khel? I haven't spoken with you in two weeks now."

Khel nodded and explained as they walked of her childbirth, new routine, and her little moment with Enel earlier. Kura took it in and giggled into her palm and nodded beside her. "I see. Well, that answers that. I've been well. My dear Fuza has been busy as well. He's off in the scavenger hunters. I don't see him as often as before but he comes around every three or seven days now."

Khel understood what she meant, Entle had explained the different roles on the island before. There were fishermen who captured and sold the food for their respective village. Monks, who oversaw their villages they were assigned to by the Council of Birka. Traders, they traded goods and treasures they collected from both scavengers who took in objects and things that were occasionally stranded in the sea clouds and people like Sahatori who went around gathering unique or special trinkets from all around. He'd made trips to Angel Island and Entle told her that he'd recently met with Shandians somehow and came out unscathed. An odd story but she took it as good luck for the man. And of course the Birkan Vassals who were the Birka's protectors and said to be the greatest militant force among the skies. Even Skypiea's own Divine Squad, despite their overwhelming numbers, couldn't stand up to the full force of Birka's Warriors should they ever enter conflict. "Though they still have Upper Yard's immense resources and their technological advancements in Dial usage. It's the only reason Skypiea is the dominant political and military force in the sky. Their god lays claim to the whole Emperor Cloud. I'm sure even the seemingly peaceful Gan Fall recognizes that." She pondered over her thoughts before she realized Kura was waving at her face with an eyebrow raised and a hand on her hip. "Ah, my apologies, I let my thoughts wander about. Did you say something?"

Kura simply sighed before taking her hand and leading them back to the housing grounds where the villagers resided. Most of them had houses with a floor or two. Some simply had the bare essentials, like her and Entle's home, and maybe a water supply. The village's main fountain was at the middle point between the settlement and the coastal shores where the fishers fished and scavengers left to collect and/or sell things. "I asked if you'd be attending the summit at the town hall. Seeing as how you've a baby to look after. Will Entle go in your stead?"

"Ah, I believe he will. Enel will raise a fuss if left unattended for some time. Plus, Entle told me he spoke with Rimbert recently and he said he had some important announcements to discuss. He may even have to depart Sigtuna to head for the capital if he deems it necessary on our behalf." Kura listened and put a finger to her chin, as if she was processing every possible outcome to the upcoming village summit. She finally spoke. "Well, that was some news there. I'll inform Fuza once I return home. Please, don't think twice about visiting. I'd love to see you and this little face again," she said as she rubbed her hand against Enel's sleeping head.

"Of course, until next time, Kura. Say hi to Fuza for me!"

Kura nodded as she walked back to her residence and Khel did the same as the sun began to set in the distance. The Endless white star in the sky would soon shine in its place.

"At last. This seems good enough." Rimbert took a much needed drink of water and nodded at his papers. The summit would be held tomorrow and everything was ready. He turned off his lamp dial and was about to go to bed until he got a sudden call. He accepted it and it was from an advisor from the Council.

His eyes widened.

"Oh dear. This isn't good. Not at all".

He allowed the man to give him a quick summary until he finished a few minutes afterwards. He muttered a goodbye and returned to his bed and sat on it. His hands massaged his temples as he thought, "And here I thought I was done with any unpleasant news." He exhaled a breath he didn't realize he was holding. "How do I explain this one now?"

Author's Notes

Alright. That's the second chapter at last.

I apologize for having taken more than a month which is unacceptable in my eyes, to just write a 5,000 word chapter. At most, I should've taken a single to three weeks to write and upload this. But I hit a writer's block.

Didn't know where to go from the first one but thankfully had a big meetup with some friends and one of them is an Author. Met him in real life for the first time too. Gave me some excellent tips and how to properly structure my story here. He gave me an excellent tip which was if you're hitting a writer's block, it's because something went wrong along the way and you dug a dead end. He explained the best way to prevent one is to just write and take notes about literally anything related to your story. It'll help trace your thoughts back and reuse or come up with better ideas like transitions or plot twists when you need them.

I made many notes along the way in my day to day life too. Over 50 pages in fact! Both for this story and another one I want to write soon. But one at a time.

As I said, this is my first story here. Expect no perfections but expect effort. I do work on these chapters nearly everywhere I go outside of home. Even got a neat little tablet I can use to write on the go instead of only at home. It's a small thing but compact and pretty efficient. I'll say, it was an enormous hassle fixing the email switches from my old one to this one. But I got it down. I got pretty close to considering it a done deal and leaving my account here. Thankfully, the issue was resolved and here I am. I'll place the date I finished this chapter and upload it so I can go back and check the dates. I don't plan to take over two months to upload chapters as I'd be doing a piss poor rate of 6 chapters a year. And that's completely ridiculous.

So yeah, I'll be doing a better job. Can't and won't do less than my best here.

So here's the second chapter. See y'all in the next one.

Chapter 2: Completed on 9/5/2024

The Error Destroyer out. :)
