Renesmee's POV

I wasn't even sure how long I had sat here, lying on my bed, staring at my now black phone screen. Did that just happen? It did. It really did. Jacob called. He tracked down my phone number, called me, and asked me out on a date.

I let out the most high-pitched squeal that has ever left my mouth, kicking my feet in the air. Thankfully, Charlie had already headed to the station or he would've been knocking on my bedroom door for a welfare check. Thinking of Charlie had me eager to ask him about tonight. He was usually very easy-going, so I was fairly sure he wouldn't mind. I only wanted to check with him first to be polite. I was his guest, I didn't want to ruin any plans he or Sue had prepared.

The real question was, do I need to check with my parents? This was brand new territory for our family. Dating hadn't really been a possibility for me yet, hiding out for so long as I finished my rapid growth spurts. I could guess that Dad, as with most girl dads, would not be crazy about it. I think Mom would be on my side, she's always been quite the romantic.

Thinking about it, I really didn't want to tell them, at least not yet. I wanted to finally have some independence this summer. I decided to ask Charlie first; he's great friends with Jacob's dad. If he's concerned about it, I'll talk to Mom and Dad.

Eager to confirm with Jacob soon, I finished getting ready and headed out. Thankfully, nothing in Forks was too far apart. I pulled up to the station, glad to see the cruise marked 'Chief' still in its designated spot. I hoped it was a quiet morning inside. I had never visited Charlie at work, so I was nervous as I walked in the front door.

Right inside sat a few desks situated in the open space. A man, one of the younger officers, was seated closest to the door. He turned his head away from the computer with a welcoming smile.

"Hello miss, can I help you with anything?"

Remember, don't call Charlie grandpa. Not here. I chanted to myself.

"Yes, sir. I'm looking for Chief Swan?" The officer was confused for a moment until recognition flashed in his eyes.

"Are you Renesmee?" I nodded to confirm. "The Chief told us you were coming to visit. He's in his office, right around that corner." He pointed me in the right direction. After saying my thanks, I followed his instructions.

Charlie's door was propped open and his face was free from stress as he typed slowly on his keyboard. All good signs that I would not be too much of a disruption at the moment. I quietly tapped on the door frame.

"Knock, knock Chief."

"Renesmee! What a surprise. Everything okay, hon?" He motioned for me to sit in the chair across from his desk and I followed.

"Oh yes, everything is great!" He looked relieved. I hesitated, uncomfortable. As much as I loved all the men in my family, none of them were my first pick to discuss dating. "I was already headed out for the day and had a question for you so I thought I'd stop by."

He leaned back in his chair, folding his hands over his stomach, nearly mimicking how he sat in his recliner at home.

"Go ahead, kiddo. It's a slow morning."

"Well, I was wondering if you or Sue had any specific plans tonight?" I paused and he was already shaking his head to say no. "If you didn't, I've been invited to go to the pizza place tonight."

Charlie's eyebrows shot up his forehead. He worked to make his face serious but I could tell he was fighting back a smile.

"Oh really?" And who invited you?" I blew out a breath, trying to calm my nerves. I watched my hands clasped together in my lap to have an excuse to not look him in the eyes.

"At the diner last night, I met a few people. Before I left, I met a guy and talked with him for a while. He called me this morning to invite me to dinner. I'm pretty sure you know him, Jacob Black?" I tentatively met his eyes when I finished.

"Jake? Jacob asked you to dinner?" Charlie was clearly surprised. "And you want to go?"

That seemed like a strange question to me, but maybe he was making sure I didn't feel pressured to go?

"Yes, I'd like to. He seemed very nice last night." As I talked, Charlie seemed to change his expression from surprise to satisfaction.

"Yeah, Jake's a good kid." He laughed to himself. "Have you mentioned this to your parents?"

"No, I wanted to ask you. You seem to know everyone so I assumed you'd know if there was any reason I shouldn't go." I mentally crossed my fingers and toes, praying he wouldn't make me call my parents. To my relief, Charlie stayed smiling. Again, he seemed to be holding back laughter. Was that a common grandpa reaction? I tried to imagine how Carlise would respond in this scenario.

"Well, I have no issues with you going tonight. I trust Jacob completely. I'll leave discussions with your parents up to you." I couldn't help but let out another small squeal. I bounced over to hug him.

"Thanks Gr-" I stopped myself. "Charlie!" He finally let out his laughter.

"I'll make sure I'm home to give him a talk before you go." I rolled my eyes.

"Of course you will." I hugged him once more, then bounced over to the door. "I'll head back out and leave you to it. Love you." I looked back before I stepped out the door.

"Love you too, kiddo." Charlie looked somehow smug. I couldn't understand why. But, at that moment, I was too excited for my date to care. As soon as I was back to my car, I texted Jacob.

I'm in for dinner tonight! What time? He responded immediately, making me nearly burst with joy.

Great! Pick you up at 6:30?

Sounds good :)

Tonight was my first date! I almost broke and called my mom, wanting to gush with her. But I held back, still wanting to keep this close to my chest.

I checked the time, laughing at how many hours I had to kill before dinner. With nothing else to do, I went back to my original 'Summer in Forks Bucket List'. Another local spot featured heavily in my parents' love story, the high school.

As I drove towards the school, my first time seeing it in person, I remembered another childhood conversation.

"Daddy, how did you meet Mommy?" I asked him from across the dinner table. He laughed, throwing his head back.

"Well honey, that is actually quite the story. But, I believe that actually your mother met me, or at least saw me, first." He looked over at her, grinning crookedly. Mom smiled shyly, looking as though she would be blushing if her vampire skin allowed that.

"You could say that." She rolled her eyes at him, before turning to me to tell her side of the story.

"It was my first day at Forks High School. I spent the morning half of that day just trying to ignore all the staring. It was rare for that school to see a new student. Later that day, in the cafeteria, I looked over and saw five of the prettiest people I had ever seen. I asked one of the students sitting with me about them. That was the first time I heard the tale of the Cullen Family. I was intrigued by the beautiful bronze haired boy sitting by himself amongst the two couples." She reached over to hold Dad's hand. My eyes widened, taking in every bit.

"From across the room, I could hear their conversation. That was the first time I realized I couldn't hear your mother's thoughts. I was immediately frustrated, my power had never failed me before. I had heard thoughts of the 'new girl' all day. The other students were nearly feral over her arrival. I couldn't understand any of it, surely she was just another ordinary human." He and Mom laughed together now. When their laughs passed, Dad turned to me seriously and continued.

"After that lunch hour, we had Biology class together. Your mother walked into the room and I knew she would be my lab partner, the only empty seat in the room next to me."

"That sounds like fate!" I was starry eyed just thinking of that day, not catching on to my dad's tone.

"Something like that," Dad answered wryly. "Everything changed when she stepped in the path of the air vent, blowing her scent in my direction. She had the sweetest blood I had ever smelled. I spent the next hour fighting my instincts that begged me to kill her, nearly losing my sanity. She sat right there next to me, so dangerously close."

"But, Dad, you are so strong. You never just slip up. Her scent was really that powerful?" In my mind, my dad was one of the strongest vampires I had ever met. While Mom and Grandpa Carlisle were the only ones to never kill someone, my dad didn't just have accidents. Even his rebellious vampire years were a choice when he purposefully hunted criminals.

"It was more potent than I can describe, especially to me. You see Renesmee, in the vampire world there is an idea out there called 'singers'. Basically, the theory is that a certain human's scent 'sings' to a certain vampire. If that concept is true, then that was definitely what your mother was to me." I couldn't even imagine meeting a human that smelled so tempting.

"Mom, what were you thinking during all of this?" My human mother must have been so, so confused.

"Honestly, I thought he hated me. I had no idea why, but the look on his face screamed angry. I just didn't know the real reason."

"Whoa, that's so intense. Daddy, what did you do after that first day?"

"I ran away, sweetheart. I'm still not sure if that was the cowardly move or the safe one. Maybe it was both. I drove up to Alaska, to our cousins in Denali. I spent some time hunting and clearing my head. Every moment I was there, I was thinking of your mother, seeing her beautiful face everywhere I looked." He reached over to brush her face with his hand, cupping her cheek as she leaned into him. "I was itching to come back. So, a week later, I did."

"And I nearly fainted with shock, seeing him back in the cafeteria. I panicked, really thinking he hated me. He proved me wrong though, in class that day." She winked over at him.

"I felt ready to see her again. In class, I talked to her, trying to make up for my awful behavior from that first day. I was fascinated just talking to her, still dying to hear her thoughts. We did a lab together and she showed me how smart and stubborn she really was." Mom gasped theatrically.

"Me? Stubborn? Never."

"Oh please, Bella. I know you were trying your hardest to prove me wrong while we identified those slides." Mom refused to admit it but her smirk spoke for itself.

I paused my reminiscing as I pulled into the school lot. As expected for the middle of summer, mine was the only car in sight. As soon as I was out of the car, I stood silent for a moment, testing the limit of my enhanced hearing. I really didn't want to have to explain myself to any stranger today. Satisfied that I was alone, I walked swiftly towards the small grouping of buildings.

Although I'd never been to the campus before, it was easy enough to find the building that held the cafeteria. The doors were locked and the floors seemed in the middle of being waxed, so I settled for looking through the windows. The tables were arranged in clumps along the edges of the walls, but I could imagine how they were usually spread apart and filled with students. I looked to one corner and easily could picture Dad, Aunt Alice, Uncle Jasper, Uncle Emmett, and Aunt Rose all sitting together, looking as young as beautiful as they do today. No wonder Mom was intrigued, I would've been if they were strangers to me. I was truly impressed that they've kept up their charade for so many years.

My eyes moved across the room as I pictured my human, high school aged mother. While I'd never seen her as a human, except for the brief glimpse after my birth, I'd seen the handful of pictures Aunt Alice had forcefully collected. I laughed again thinking of my dad assuming she was just another "ordinary human". Boy, was his world turned upside down not long after that.

I then bounced from window to window looking for the science building. Finally, I found it, easily identifiable with the classic black top lab tables and extra fixtures around the classroom. I stood looking through the glass, thinking of Dad's experiences here. I felt an eerie heaviness in the air knowing this was the start of their story, but now aware of a dire path that was narrowly avoided. If Dad hadn't been strong enough to fight against his instincts, I wouldn't be here today. I shivered at the thought and backed away, now eager to move on.
