This is the most personal story I've ever written. I know you all probably hear authors say it all the time, but I legitimately mean it when I say that this story has been a big passion project ever since I became a Vocaloid fan. What is it now? 2024? I've been working on this since 2016. I've had more ideas than I can count for this story over these past eight years, but I now finally think I have enough experience to write this. Here it is ladies and gentlemen, a story based on my Vocaloid headcanon, everything going forward is part of my headcanon Vocaloid universe. The only thing that there's left for me to say is... enjoy.

Life was hard...

Guess that's something most people agree on. But most people who think that are adults. Kids usually don't have minds developed enough to think about such cynicism. But what happens, when kids aren't being raised right, when they're being abused, taken advantage of, when they're at the mercy of people wanna break their spirit. That's when even they agree that life is indeed hard.

Such fate was given to two children.

One day, a baby was left at an orphanage. He was put outside their door in a basket, everything about him unknown. The only thing notable about him was that there was a letter with him. It was by his parents, and it said that they were too poor to take care of him. Poor boy, he was sent into an absolute hellhole that his parents couldn't had ever imagined. They had sent him in a place no kid would ever want to be in.

The exact next night. Another baby was left at the same orphanage. This time, it was a little girl. She was also in a basket, and also had a letter about her own parents and how they also weren't wealthy enough to take care of her. Just like the boy from the night prior, she had also been sent to one of the most miserable places children could ever be sent. But these two children, were about to stand for everything they believed in. For better or for worse.

For the first four or five years, the two children never met one another. It was simply a big house with way too many children, the boy and the girl just never happened to interact for a long time... until one day. The boy was five years old now, the girl was four years old on the other hand. It was just another day, many of the children were playing in a single room. Both the boy and the girl were there when suddenly, the boy saw that the girl sat alone while she was ignoring everyone.

"Why aren't you playing?" The boy asked.

"I don't like anyone, the world is terrible." The girl answered him.

"That's not true, I can assure you there are good people in the world." The boy tried to cheer her up.

"There aren't, nobody has ever been nice to me ever." The girl said.

"Me neither, but I never give up, I try to make as many friends as possible." The boy continued his attempt to make her happy.

"But do you have friends?" The girl half-yelled.

"I mean, I wouldn't necessarily call them friends, but they can be nice to me if I behave right, that's gotta worth for something?" The boy argued.

"You seriously think that's progress?" The girl wasn't satisfied with his words.

"If you play, I promise I'll be a friend." The boy offered.

"Y-you mean it." The girl was caught off-guard.

"Yes," the boy offered his hand for a handshake "what's your name? ...mine's Kaito."

The girl felt strange, it was like the first time she had ever trusted someone ever "I'm Meiko."

"Wonderful to meet you Meiko, what do you wanna play?" Kaito asked.

"I-I don't know what to say, I was never prepared for this." Meiko didn't knew how to get used to it.

"How about we play hide n seek, I think you should hide first." Kaito suggested.

"O-okay I guess." Meiko said.

That was the day Kaito and Meiko made their first friend in their life. Little did they know, they had formed a bond that was gonna last forever.

Kaito was eight now, Meiko was seven. Every year they dealt with the abusive foster care. They would get physical, mental, and spiritual abuse from the people in charge. Meiko was scared to even get a cookie from the fridge because she feared she'd get scolded for it. There were two people however who treated Kaito and Meiko with all the love and care that children should get. These people were the janitor Leon, and the driver Lola. Leon and Lola were the closest thing Kaito and Meiko had to parents. They were the only people that cared about the kids.

"Kaito, Meiko, here are dumplings that we brought for you." Leon told the two kids as they made their way into the hiding spot.

"Excellent." Kaito grabbed some for himself.

"Thanks you two, you didn't had to." Meiko took some.

"Nonsense, you children deserve the best, these ghouls always feed you the most low-quality garbage and we're not gonna stand for it." Lola said in a fiery voice.

"You guys are the best." Kaito said.

"Oh, I just realized something, you guys haven't ever heard Lola sing." Leon pointed out.

"W-what?" Lola wasn't expecting him to put her in such situation.

"Woah! I really wanna hear it." Meiko was stoked now.

"C'mon guys, I'm not as good as some of my friends think I am." Lola said.

"We still have faith in you, go ahead, sing." Kaito told her.

"Go on Lola! Kill it!" Meiko couldn't wait any longer.

"Oh well... here it goes." Lola knew she had to start.

"Can you feel the pain

Can you feel the pain now
Can you feel the pain
Can you feel the pain

Can you feel it baby

Can you feel the pain"

As Meiko kept hearing Lola's delightful voice, it ignited a fire inside her heart. She knew what she wanted for life now. Meiko had realized, she loved music. Eventually after a few minutes, Lola finished singing.

"That was great." Kaito gave what he thought was a compliment, Meiko didn't thought it was enough though.

"Just great? That was the greatest thing I ever felt in a my life, you crushed it Lola!" Meiko said

"It was nothing special." Lola said.

"Nothing special? You should be the queen of Earth!" Meiko hugged Lola's legs.

"Regardless, we should be leaving now before the higher-ups of this orphanage become suspicious." Leon wisely suggested.

"Agreed 100%, see you again children." Lola said as the two adults left the hiding spot.

Kaito and Meiko were standing there alone now.

"Kaito..." Meiko called his name.

"What?" Kaito replied.

"I wanna be a singer when I grow up." Meiko told him.

"Meiko... I'm not sure if-" before Kaito could finish what he was saying, Meiko cut him off.

"If what? If I can make it? I will make it! If they have to kill me to stop me, then SO BE IT!" Meiko had gotten really passionate about this.

"Meiko I just hope you don't end up leading yourself in a harmful path." Kaito said.

It was clear though. Meiko wanted to be a huge successful musician, but Kaito is worried. The foster care though, they don't want their kids to be successful if said kids don't give them credit, and that was gonna be an issue for Meiko.

It was getting insane. Kaito was eleven now while Meiko was ten. The orphanage hadn't gotten any less brutal. It was usually more of the same. Kaito continues being nice and attempts to make as many friends as possible, Meiko continues to practice singing, the people in charge force the children to do backbreaking chores, the usual. But one day, something different happened.

Meiko was writing a song draft on a paper just when she saw a three year old girl walk by "Ello!" The little girl clearly tried to say 'hello.'

"Hey there shorty, are you new here?" Meiko asked.

"Nu?" The little girl was too young to know what the word meant.

"Guess you're not old enough to understand me." Meiko realized.

Meiko took the little girl by hands and walked to the kitchen where Lola had a cookie jar in her hands, eating cookies.

"Hey Lola." Meiko greeted her.

"How are you Meiko?" Lola said while still chewing.

"Fine, but I came here to ask who's this little girl right here?" Meiko asked.

"This is Kokone, she was left here when she was a baby just like you and Kaito." Lola revealed.

"Really?" Meiko felt horrible for Kokone.

"She just learned how to walk a few days ago, which is why only now you've seen her." Lola told Meiko.

Meiko looked at Kokone "Don't worry Kokone, I'll take care of you, these ghouls who own the place certainly won't."

Meiko felt sorry for Kokone, and since that day she made Kokone her own responsibility.

The present day seemed like one that was gonna go well. Kaito and Meiko were both sixteen years old now while Kokone was eight years old. The two were playing with her with her beloved toys.

"You're so good sis!" Kokone was impressed by Meiko's skills with her vehicle toys.

"There's nothing that special about what I did." Meiko smiled.

Suddenly one of the guards of the fostercare arrived and grabbed Kokone by the arm, took her, and left.

"No! You can't! Bring Kokone back to us!" Meiko yelled.

"Where could they be taking her." Kaito was curious.

Kaito and Meiko were both seventeen now. It was night, most of the people in the building were sleeping. Kaito woke up for a glass of water, after entering the kitchen and drinking it, he heard singing.

"Inochi kaketeto chikatta hi kara
Sutekina omoide nokoshitekita noni
Ano toki onaji hana wo mite
Utsukushii to itta futari no kokoro to kokoro ga
Ima wa mou kayowanai
Ano subarashii ai wo mou ichido
Ano subarashii ai wo mou ichido"

"It's the song me and Meiko wrote a few years ago." Kaito whispered, Meiko originally wanted to write it alone but she eventually asked him for help because she was struggling.

Kaito went outside the house as he followed the singing. He knew it was Meiko's voice, and he was confused as to why Meiko was singing outside all the sudden tonight. As he got near the parking area, he saw Meiko standing there singing.

"Meiko, why are you singing here?" Kaito was confused.

Meiko, feeling emotional, stopped singing as she hugged Kaito and started to cry uncontrollably on his shoulder.

"Oh Kaito, I hate my life so much." Meiko said as tears came out of both her eyes.

"Meiko, it's gonna be alright." Kaito tried to comfort her.

"Alright what? These vermin, these gremlins, these cretins, they've taken everything away from me." Meiko yelled still in teary eyes.

"Sure, I agree the people who run the orphanage are horrible, but I still have never seen you like this." Kaito said.

"What are we now, seventeen? We should be following are dreams now, but they don't want us to hit it big." Meiko said.

"You're really afraid to persue your music career, aren't you?" Kaito was understanding the situation now.

"Why shouldn't I be afraid, they know I will never credit them for anything, after I become an adult I'll be forced to leave this place and they aren't gonna have my back one bit, I'll be homeless immediately." Meiko knew them too well.

"But Meiko, what are we suppose to do?" Kaito asked her.

"If I knew I wouldn't be crying right now." Meiko said still with her teary voice.

"Who knows, maybe if we act nice they'll let-" Kaito was talking, but...

Meiko cut him off by slapping his face.

"W-what was that for?" Kaito was taken aback.

"WHEN WILL YOU CHANGE! ALL YOU KNOW IS TRYING APPEASE EVERYONE, YOU'VE BEEN LIKE THIS SINCE WE FIRST MET! What about poor Kokone, we haven't seen her for over a year, she could be dead for all we know, the rumor is that she mocked the headmaster's voice so they kicked her out, if that's true then these scumfucks don't deserve people like you. Why? Why are you like this?" Meiko began crying again after that emotional rant.

"So... you've made up your mind then." Kaito said.

"My mind on what?" Meiko was puzzled.

"We're leaving, we're gonna leave this glorified prison and persue your music career." Kaito said.

"H-how?" Meiko didn't understood.

"You see that RV in this parking area, that belongs to one of the higher-ups, if we steal that then we can leave." Kaito explained.

Meiko stopped crying "I mean, Lola has been teaching me driving in-secret for a few years, so we can definitely do this, but how do we steal it?"

"What are you trying to say, it's right here." Kaito said.

"I meant, it's night, the RV's clearly locked right now." Meiko told him.

'"Well... didn't thought about that not gonna lie." Kaito felt embarrassed.

"Guess we'll have to try another day." Kaito and Meiko were about to go back to their rooms, just when...

"Stop!" They heard a voice and looked behind themselves

"There shouldn't be another day, you two must escape now." It was Lola's voice, it were Leon and Lola.

"Leon! Lola!" Kaito was surprised.

"Yes, if you all leave by their terms after growing up then you'll certainly go homeless, you must leave." Leon said.

"That's cool and all, but why were you two spying on us?" Kaito asked.

"We weren't spying! It was accidental, we were actua-who cares honestly, the point is that you'd need to leave in order to fulfill your dreams!"

"But the door to the RV is locked." Meiko told them.

Lola took her hairpin out of her hair "I'll see about that."

Lola went near the RV door, used her hairpin to succession and opened the RV door.

"That's amazing." Kaito was blown away.

"Here, it's all the money we have, we were saving it for something else, but you two clearly need it more to not starve for the next few weeks." The two adults gave Kaito and Meiko their money.

"We can't thank you two enough." Meiko was about to cry again.

"Make sure to find a comfortable place to live, we'll come up with a fake story as to who stole the RV." Lola hugged the two.

"We'll also plant fake evidence of you two dying." Leon said.

Leon and Lola hugged Kaito and Meiko and said their farewell, that was the start of a new journey. A journey which would go down in legend. Kaito and Meiko were going inspire generations, be icons of resilience, but they just didn't knew it yet. With that Kaito and Meiko took the RV and left the hell they had been in for almost two decades. Kaito wasn't enjoying Meiko's rather poor driving skills though.

So yeah, that was the first chapter of the story I've worked the hardest for for years. Keep in mind folks, everything that's part of my headcanon is eligible for this story. All of you will know how these nobodies became somebodies.
