Lincoln's Weekend (Part Two)
The next morning, Lincoln heads over to Professor Kukui's lab, while his Rotom Phone was following after them with Lisa watching from her room. When they gets there, he sees him standing on his front porch.
"Alola, Lincoln; Alola, Lisa." said Professor Kukui.
"Alola, Professor Kukui." said Lincoln and Lisa in unison. "So, what are we learning about today, Professor?"
"There's only so much you can get from just simply telling you about the basics of Pokemon." said Professor Kukui. "Today, I'm going to show you how to capture, battle, and train Pokemon."
"Cool!" said Lincoln.
"Some field research would be enlightening." said Lisa.
"I'll bring you over to Route 1." said Professor Kukui. "It's a great place for trainers who are just starting out to get some experience."
"Okay." said Lincoln. The two then start walking towards Route 1. What they didn't know was that Rockruff was watching Lincoln from the side of Professor Kukui's lab, and that it started to follow them.
Lincoln and Professor Kukui soon reach Route 1 and immediately see a Yungoos wandering around the grass.
"Here's a good opportunity to show you how to catch a Pokemon." said Professor Kukui. He takes out a pokeball and throws it, releasing a Stufful.
"So, what do I have to do first?" asked Lincoln.
"First, you have to tire the Pokemon out by having one of yours battle it." explained Professor Kukui. "Stufful, use Tackle!" The Stufful runs towards the Yungoos and rams into it. The Yungoos responds by doing the same thing to Stufful.
"Just so you know; the Pokemon you battle against will fight back." said Professor Kukui. "All right, Stufful. Use one more Tackle attack!" The Stufful hits the Yungoos with another Tackle attack. Professor Kukui sees that the Yungoos looked pretty worn out.
"That Yungoos looks pretty worn out." said Professor Kukui. He then takes out an empty pokeball. "Now to catch it, you simply throw an empty pokeball at it... like this." He then throws the pokeball at the Yungoos, hitting it, and sucking it in. The pokeball wiggles a few times before clicking.
"Whoa! That was so awesome!" said Lincoln.
"Pokeballs are such an intriguing devices." said Lisa. "How does it contain a creature larger than it?"
"Pokeballs convert Pokemon into energy, compresses it, and stores it inside itself." explained Professor Kukui.
"Perhaps when I get the opportunity, I can examine one to fully understand how it works." said Lisa.
"Maybe I can mail you one when I get the chance." said Lincoln.
"Thank you, male sibling." said Lisa. Professor Kukui walks to Lincoln.
"Care to give it a try, Lincoln?" asked Professor Kukui.
"Sure." replied Lincoln. Professor Kukui reaches into a satchel he has with him and pulls out some sort of belt that held five pokeballs.
"Here you are, Lincoln; I have five pokeballs for you to use." said Professor Kukui. "This belt can carry up to six pokeballs on it."
"Thanks, Professor Kukui." said Lincoln as he takes the belt and puts it on, then putting Litten's pokeball on it. Just then, he hears rustling coming from the tall grass. He sees a white, buglike Pokemon with yellow and orange mandibles walking out of the grass. Lincoln takes out his Rotom Phone and points it at the Pokemon.
"Grubbin, the Larva Pokemon. If you find its nest, you shouldn't stick your hand inside. You'll get bitten by an irritated Grubbin." said the Rotom Phone. Lincoln looks up Grubbin.
"It says here that Grubbin is a bug type." said Lincoln. "And if remember correctly, fire type Pokemon like my Litten will have the advantage."
"Very good, Lincoln." said Professor Kukui. Lincoln then takes Litten's pokeball out of his belt.
"Go, Litten!" said Lincoln as he throws Litten's pokeball and releases him. "Litten, use Ember!" Litten leaps up and opens his mouth, releasing burning embers from it and they hit Grubbin, hitting it and dealing super effective damage.
"Very good, Lincoln." said Professor Kukui. Grubbin suddenly became covered in fire. "It looks like Grubbin has been afflicted with burn."
"You mean the status condition that repeatedly hurts the Pokemon that has it?" asked Lincoln.
"Not only that, but the attack strength of the Pokemon with that condition is weakened." said Professor Kukui. Grubbin jumps at Litten and bites him with his mandibles, but not doing much harm to him due to its attack strength being weakened. Grubbin winces in pain from its burn.
"Okay, Litten, use Scratch!" said Lincoln. Litten jumps at Grubbin and scratches it, knocking it to the ground.
"Looks like it's weak enough, Lincoln." said Professor Kukui. Lincoln takes an empty pokeball off of his belt, pushes the button on it to enlarge it, and throws it at Grubbin; it hits Grubbin and sucks it in. Lincoln watches as the pokeball wiggled around while a light was blinking on the button. Seconds later, the pokeball clicks and stops. "Good work, Lincoln; you caught a Grubbin."
Lincoln looks in awe at the pokeball as he walks to it and picks it up; he looks at the pokeball for a few seconds until a smile appeared on his face.
"Yeah! I caught a Grubbin!" cheered Lincoln, raising Grubbin's pokeball up. Litten meows happily in repsonse. Lincoln walks to Litten and pats him on the head. "You were great, Litten."
"Congratulations, brother." said Lisa.
"And when you catch a Pokemon, Lincoln; all the information about it will appear on your Rotom Phone." said Professor Kukui. Lincoln takes out his Rotom Phone and saw Grubbin's information on the screen.
"Okay; this says my Grubbin's a boy, he knows Vice Grip, and he has an ability called Swarm." said Lincoln.
"That increases the power of his bug type moves when his stamina is low." said Professor Kukui. "It's important to have Pokemon of different types on your team, Lincoln. Both fire and bug types are weak against rock type Pokemon, so you'll need a Pokemon that have an advantage over them."
"Such as water, grass, fighting, ground, and steel?" asked Lisa.
"Precisely." said Professor Kukui.
"Thanks, Professor Kukui; I'll remember that." said Lincoln. Some rustling was heard from some nearby grass, making everyone look to see a small, yellow Pokemon with black-tipped ears, red circles on its cheeks, and a small black tail. Lincoln takes out his Rotom Phone and points it at the Pokemon.
"Pichu, the Tiny Mouse Pokemon. It still can't use electricity well. When it's surprised or excited, it discharges electricity unintentionally." said the Rotom Phone.
"I'm gonna catch this one." said Lincoln. He has Litten get ready for battle. "Okay, Litten; use Ember!" Litten releases a spray of bits of fire from his mouth, hitting the Pichu. It responds by releasing a jolt of electricity from itself, hitting Litten.
"Just so you know; some moves aren't effective one way or the other." said Professor Kukui.
"Litten, use Scratch!" said Lincoln. Litten runs at the Pichu and scratches it across its chest, knocking it to the ground. Litten suddenly starts to twitch as static electricity covers his body.
"I think this Pichu has the Static ability." said Professor Kukui.
"What's that?" asked Lisa.
"It's an ability which could cause paralysis to a Pokemon that hits the Pokemon with a physical move." explained Professor Kukui. Lincoln sees the Pichu struggling to get up and decides that it would be a good time to catch it. He takes out an empty pokeball and throws it at the Pichu, hitting it, and sucking it in. The pokeball wiggles a few times before clicking.
"Yes! I caught a Pichu!" said Lincoln. He looks at his Rotom Phone to see Pichu's information. "This says that it's a girl, she knows Thunder Shock and Charm, and like you pointed out, she has the Static ability." He puts his Rotom Phone back into his pocket and looks at his paralyzed Litten. "You okay, Litten?" Professor Kukui walks to Lincoln while reaching into his satchel and pulls out a red berry.
"Here, Lincoln; give Litten this." said Professor Kukui, holding out the berry.
"What's is it?" asked Lincoln, taking the berry.
"That's called a Cheri Berry." said Professor Kukui. "A Pokemon that eats it will be cured of its paralysis."
"Good." said Lincoln. He holds the Cheri Berry close to Litten and he eats it; the static electricty was expelled from his body. Litten meows happily. "Feeling better, Litten?" Litten meows in response. "Thanks, Professor."
"You're quite welcome, Lincoln." said Professor Kukui. "There are different kinds of berries that heal different status conditions." Just then, the sound of flapping wings appears, and Lincoln looks to see a black and white, birdlike Pokemon with a red crest on its face that goes down to the back of its head, flying at him, making him dive down to the ground.
"What is that?" asked Lincoln as he points his Rotom Phone at the Pokemon.
"Pikipek, the Woodpecker Pokemon. It pecks at trees with its hard beak. You can get some idea of its mood or condition from the rhythm of its pecking." said the Rotom Phone.
"Watch out, Lincoln! It's coming back around!" said Professor Kukui. Lincoln sees that the Pikipek was, in fact, coming back towards him. As it got close, the Rockruff that was staying with Professor Kukui comes running out of the grass and slams into it.
"Rockruff?" said Lincoln. Rockruff got between Lincoln and the Pikipek and growled at it. The Pikipek then flies at Rockruff and jabs it with its beak, but not seeming to do much. Rockruff responds by staring harshly at the Pikipek, making it nervous. After a while, the Pikipek just flies away.
"Are you okay, Lincoln?" asked Professor Kukui as he runs over to him.
"Yeah, I'm fine." said Lincoln. He suddenly felt something tackle him to the ground. When he looks to see what did, he sees Rockruff standing on his chest with its tail wagging. A few seconds later, it starts licking Lincoln's face, making him laugh.
"Rockruff, were you following Lincoln?" asked Professor Kukui. Rockruff looks at Professor Kukui and barks as it nods its head.
"You were?" Lincoln asked Rockruff.
"It seems that Rockruff likes you." said Professor Kukui. "Lincoln; perhaps you can look after it."
"Isn't Rockruff yours?" asked Lincoln.
"Actually, I found it one day near here, injured and hungry." explained Professor Kukui. "I took it in and nursed it back to health." Lincoln looks at Rockruff who was looking back at him with a glimmer in its eyes.
"Well, if it's okay with you, I'll be glad to have it on my team." said Lincoln. Rockruff barks with joy. As Lincoln starts to get back up, one of his pokeballs falls out of his pocket and rolls over to Rockruff, who then pokes it with its nose, making it enlarge; it then pokes it again, making it suck Rockruff in. The pokeball wiggles a few times before clicking.
"Take good care of Rockruff." said Professor Kukui.
"I will." said Lincoln. He looks up Rockruff's information on his Rotom Phone. "This says that Rockruff is a boy, he knows Tackle, Leer, and Sand Attack; he also has the Own Tempo ability which makes it so he can't be confused."
After that, Lincoln just focuses on training the Pokemon he had with him at the moment. His Litten learned Lick, his Grubbin learned String Shot and Mud-Slap, his Pichu learned Tail Whip, and his Rockruff learned Bite.
The two head to Kahuna Hala's house for lunch. While they, and their Pokemon, ate with Professor Kukui and Hau, they all talk about their day so far.
"Sounds like you're doing well so far, Lincoln." said Kahuna Hala.
"Yes, he has potential as a trainer." said Professor Kukui.
"Professor Kukui; what can you tell me about Z-Moves?" asked Lincoln, surprising Professor Kukui.
"How do you know about those?" asked Professor Kukui.
"I told him after Tapu Koko gave him a Z-Ring." said Kahuna Hala, surprising Professor Kukui more.
"Tapu Koko gave you a Z-Ring?!" asked Professor Kukui.
"Yeah; hold on, I'll get it." said Lincoln. He runs to the room he was staying in and comes out seconds later with the Z-Ring in his hand and shows it to Professor Kukui.
"Incredible." said Professor Kukui, looking at the Z-Ring.
"How do I use this?" asked Lincoln.
"You need Z-Crystals in order to use it." said Professor Kukui.
"Where can I find them?" asked Lincoln.
"You don't find them, you have to earn them." said Professor Kukui.
"How do I do that?" asked Lincoln.
"All in due time, Lincoln." said Professor Kukui. "For now, let's just eat and relax." They do so, while Lincoln was examining his Z-Ring. Once lunch was done, he walks outside, and calls his family.
"Hello, son; how are things in Alola?" asked Lynn Sr.
"Lisa told us about you catching some Pokemon." said Lana.
"What are they like?" asked Lola. Lincoln lets out all his Pokemon for his family to see, and tells them what they're called and what they're like.
"That Pichu is, totes, adorbs!" said Leni.
"You got that right!" said Lola as she looks at the Pichu with adoration.
"I like that Rockruff; and that Grubbin looks tasty." said Lana as she drooled. Hearing this, Lincoln's Grubbin crawls over to a small tree, snaps it in half with his mandibles, then glares at Lana on the screen.
"I think you should stick to eating worms." said Lincoln.
"Good call." Lana nervously said.
"I'm glad to hear you're doing okay after that close call you had." said Rita. "Just remember to be careful and have your Pokemon with you when walking around outside."
"I will, Mom." said Lincoln. After a few minutes of talking, they end the call. Lincoln spent the rest of the day interacting and playing with his Pokemon. Professor Kukui walks over to Lincoln and hands him a small pouch. He opens it and sees beans of many colors inside.
"Those are PokeBeans." said Professor Kukui. "They're like Pokemon treats." Lincoln grabs eight out of the pouch and gives each of his Pokemon two of them, which they really enjoyed. Soon, night came around and Lincoln was in bed with all his Pokemon.
"Well, everyone; today was amazing; and tomorrow I start Pokemon School." said Lincoln. "I can't wait to learn more about Pokemon." Lincoln then shuts his eyes, and goes to sleep.
