Miraculous: Return to the Dark Moth

Chapter 2: Chloé and Zoé

Summary: Zoé Lee comes to Paris, and becomes friends with Marinette. They instant hit off, but she doesn't know that Zoé was actually Chloé's half-sister. Chloé forces Zoé to be mean to Marinette to earn her place in the Bourgeois family. Indeed, to Chloé, there are two types of people in life: those who crush others, and those who get crushed. Zoé hesitates between Marinette and Chloé. And because a small part of her didn't want her step-sister to end up like one of Hawk Moth's akumatised victims, she allowed Zoé freedom to be befriended by Marinette and company.

As Zoé Lee was taking a tour of Paris, she takes a stop at the Tom & Sabine Boulangerie Patisserie. There Marinette and Zoé meet and instant hit it off. "Mom, can you put together a dozen more croissants for..."

"Zoé." The blonde girl introduced. "Hello, Zoé, I'm Miss Walking Disaster… I mean, Marinette. Where's your accent from? It's really pretty!" Marinette spoke. "I'm from New York." Zoé replied. "Wow, cool! And what are you doing in Paris?" Marinette asked. "I'm- uh- here to be with my family." Zoé replied to Marinette.

Marinette's eyes lit up. "Oh, is your family from here? Who are you staying with?" She asked. "I'm actually Chloé Bourgeois's half-sister," Zoé said with a hint of hesitance, watching Marinette's reaction closely.

Marinette's eyes widened for a second before she quickly composed herself. "Oh, Chloé! I know her. We go to the same school," she said, trying to keep the conversation light despite the internal turmoil her statement caused as she gave her some pastries to go. "I'm sure we'll be happy to have you here as much as Chloé does."

Zoé looked at Marinette with a mix of surprise and relief. "Thank you, that's really nice of you to say," she replied, genuinely touched by the welcoming gesture. "But Chloé can be a bit... tough to get along with. I'm not sure she'll be thrilled to have me around."

Marinette nodded, remembering the tumultuous relationship she'd had with Chloé. "Yeah, she can be challenging at times, but deep down, she's got a heart of gold. I'm sure she'll come around to the idea of having you in her life." She hoped her words were true; she didn't know what to expect from Chloé when she found out her new friend was her sister.

The two girls exchanged numbers, and Marinette offered to show Zoé around the city and introduce her to the school.

As Zoé was going to the Le Grand Paris Hotel, Chloé was getting nervous about her upcoming apology speech for the people of Paris that her father, the Mayor wrote down for her, to make up for past actions, even though she helped saved Paris from the Akuma Wars, trying to earn her chance of redemption.

"Mademoiselle Zoé has arrived." Armand the butler spoke to Chloé. "So, you're Zoé, my half sister from New York that's come to stay here?" Chloé asked. Zoé nodded nervously. "Yeah, it's nice to be here, Chloé. I've heard a lot about you."

Chloé looked at her with a mix of curiosity and suspicion. "I hope it's all good things. Now, listen up, Zoé. If you want to fit in with the Bourgeois family, you'll have to follow the rules. If you want to be a winner and be part of this family, you're gonna have to earn your place. But don't worry, I'll be your mentor and if you prove worthy enough to be my sister, okay?" Chloé asked.

"Well sure, but there's something I have to talk to you about." Zoé said. "Make it quick. I have a speech rehearsal to give out after school." Chloé said. "The stuff I heard about you helping somebody named Hawk Moth. Is it true?" Zoé asked.

Chloé's smile faltered, and she took a deep breath. "Look, that was a mistake. I didn't know what I was doing back then. I just wanted to be important, to matter. But now I know better. I've changed, and I'm working on making it right. Just do not make the same mistakes I did or people will walk over you, alright?" She pleaded.

"Okay…" Zoé said. "Off you two go to school, and remember Chloé… you have an apology speech to give out." Audrey, the mother of Chloé said. "Hold on! I forgot something…" Chloé gets Sabrina Raincomprix, her best friend out of the closet. "You can come out now. And for once, I'll take my homework off your hands, bestest best friend." Chloé said to Sabrina.

Sabrina emerged from the closet, looking slightly rumpled but mostly relieved. "Thanks, Chloé. I'll be waiting outside in the car. Good luck with your sister. I'm sure you'll both be as charming as ever!" She shot Chloé a knowing look before exiting the room.

Sabrina rolls a carpet from the entrance of the school while Marinette and her friends laugh as Chloé and Zoé walk into the courtyard.

"Hey you nobodies! Stop your meaningless chatter for a minute and listen up!" Chloé shouted until she realized what she just said. "I mean, your attention, please… This is uh..." Chloé whispers to Zoé. "…what's your name again?" She asked her half sister. "Zoé." Zoé replied. "Thanks." Chloé then turns back to her classmates.

Marinette's friends exchange glances, not quite knowing how to respond to Chloé's bluntness. They had heard about her reputation, but seeing it in action was a whole new experience. Chloé cleared her throat, trying to recover from her initial gaffe. "This is Zoé. She's only my half-sister for now, but you must still treat her with respect, so bow down...uh, I mean give her the welcome her status deserves! Got that?"

"Her sister? Chloé has a sister?" Rose asked. "If we're lucky, she'll only be half as horrible." Alya stated. "Relax girls! I met her at the bakery earlier. She's totally nothing like Chloé. She's actually really nice!" Marinette said about her meeting Zoé. "And besides, it's been a while since we had a new student since… PJ was here." She sighed looking down.

"Hey, hey… We all miss PJ. He was a good friend, and a hero." Alya said putting a hand on Marinette's shoulder. "He gave Chloé a run for her money when he became student body president." Alix Kubdel said. "Yeah…" Marinette said until she shook her head. "Still, we shouldn't make snap judgments about people before we get to know them, right?" Marinette asked to her friends who look at each other.

Adrien Agreste from far away; goes to his best friend, Nino Lahiffe. "Hey, what's up, man." He said as Chloé turns and sees him. "Ah, rule number 148: obviously, you need a guy BFF to wrap around your finger. Preferably gorgeous and very rich." She said as Adrien and Nino do their handshake.

"That one over there used to be mine, Adrikins… He's the best there is. So keep your hands off, you hear!" Chloé said to her half sister.

"We'll find you a less handsome one because you're less pretty than me, obviously." Chloé said as Marinette comes. "Ah! Here comes the patsy I was telling you about. If you can do a number on her, then I'll make you my real sister. Watch and learn." Chloé said as she turns to Marinette. "Still loafing around, Dupain-Cheng?" Chloé joked and laughs. "Hello, she's a baker's daughter, get it?" She laughs.

"Hey, Zoé. What'd you think about the macaroons? Good, huh?" Marinette asked. "What?! You know Dupain-Cheng?!" Chloé asked to Zoé in shock. "Y-yeah, we've met." Zoé said shyly. She then acts meanly to Marinette. "This clueless klutz knocked me down! So she gave me some super, uh… disgusting… macaroons."

Marinette gets shocked as Chloé had looked at her half sister, being mean to her rival. But now she had to twist those words of hers since she had an apology speech after school. "She didn't mean that." Chloe stated. "Well Chloé had been thinking that it would be enough to make up for it, but since I have good taste, I…" Chloé made gestures to tell her not to be mean like her. "I mean, they were really good. Your family's got a gift for baking." Zoé said. "Thanks." Marinette smiled.

"Okay! Me and Dupain-Cheng gotta have a talk. You just go and see if you can get along with the other students here." Chloé spoke gritting her teeth sending her half-sister to Adrien and Nino. The gang then entered Caline Bustier's class. "You and me, we'll talk in the locker room. After class, Dupain-Cheng." Chloé frowned to her rival.

Marinette felt a knot in her stomach, knowing all too well what that meant. She nodded and made her way to her seat, trying to focus on the lesson at hand. "Good morning, class." Miss Bustier spoke. "Good morning, Miss Bustier." The class greeted back. "Let's all bring out history books. For today's lesson, we learn about the mythical beasts of Ancient Greece." The class was intrigued learning about the creatures from Ancient Greece, but when Marinette saw Cerberus, the Guardian of the Underworld, it sent a chill to her spine. Her classmates even murmur that Cerberus had different kinds of appearances.

Marinette Dupain-Cheng stumbled into the locker room, her heart racing as the final bell echoed through the halls of the Françoise Dupont Collège and went to the locker room where Chloé was impatiently waiting for her.

Marinette took a deep breath, getting her stuff from her locker. As she closed it, Chloé was standing there with her arms crossed. "Hello, Dupain-Cheng." Chloé said in a cold tone to her rival. "Chloé… you said you wanted to talk?" Marinette asked.

"Yes, I did. That stunt with Zoé, having her be mean to you, like I did… It wasn't my idea." Chloé said with her arms crossed. "Besides, I don't want my half sister to make the same utterly ridiculous mistakes I did turning her into another version of me." She explained. "Yeah, I see…" Marinette stated. "Anyway, Sabrina and I overheard that you made your move to ask out my Adrikins… I mean, Adrien." Chloé said to Marinette's shock.

Marinette felt a knot in her stomach. She had hoped her secret crush on Adrien would stay that way—a secret. "How did you know?" Marinette managed to ask, trying to keep her voice steady. "Listen, baker girl, I'll let you have your date with Adrien. Besides, I have an apology speech to give out so that everyone loves me again." Chloé spoke as Marinette breathed a sigh. "But I still hate your guts."

"I suspected as much." Marinette spoke looking down. Chloé then whispers in Marinette's ear. "Make sure that Ladybug comes there too. Oh wait… you told me that you're Ladybug back at your house before Dark Moth came along." Chloé said as Marinette was shocked to hear Chloé remembered she told her rival that she was Ladybug when Chloé wanted a chance of redemption. "So don't. Be. Late." Chloé said to her rival as she left the locker room with Zoé and Sabrina.

Adrien Agreste watches Chloé storm out, leaving the school, and walks into the locker room. "What was that about?" He asked to Marinette, who looked over her shoulder to see Adrien with a hint of unease flashing across her features. "Oh, just Chloé being Chloé. We had a little talk, that's all," she replied nonchalantly, hoping to play down the tension.

"Is everything okay?" Adrien's concerned eyes searched hers, and for a moment, Marinette felt a pang of guilt. Here he was, her best friend and crush, oblivious to the chaos that swirled around her secret identity. "I got your text, milady… Is it about our date?" He asked. "What? Of course not… It's something else." Marinette denied.

"I'll tell you when we're on patrol during Chloé's apology speech." Marinette said. "Really? My father had an apology speech today too." Adrien said. "For what? How's he doing?" Marinette asked. "He's trying to use the Butterfly Miraculous for good, so it will get some getting used to since he made that promise to Mom." Adrien explained.

"Oh right… That day." Marinette spoke. "I'll see you later. Our date will be at the park." Adrien said as he left the school, and went into his limo, where his bodyguard, "the Gorilla" aka Placide I.T. was going to pick him up and drives back to the Agreste Mansion as Marinette watched.

Meanwhile, Zoé goes to Rose and Juleka where they get along. In Juleka's room, she dyes a strand of Zoé's hair pink.
