He's back and so is something from the the past

Bucky was sitting in a 1945 room waiting for Steve to wake up.

Steve looked paler and thinner but was alive and he'll take that for now.

He was playing with his dog tag wondering what Steve will think when he finds out what he'd missed, what Bucky had been up to, what he had become in only ten years, what he had become over nearly seventy years, the miscarriage, everything.

Then he sighed and looked at Steve to see his eyes flicker open.

Steve sat up to find himself on a bed in a quiet, 1940s room and the sun shining through white curtains and the Dodgers game played on an old vacuum tube radio on a wooden dresser.

"Workman up for the Phillies, now." the radio announcer said. "Holding that big club down at the end. He set, Chipman pitches. Curveball, outside. Ball one."

Steve slid his bare feet to the worn, wooden floor.

"Steve?" Bucky said and Steve turned to see him sitting in a chair.

"Bucky?" Steve said and Bucky smiled fighting tears.

"Hi." Bucky said and Steve grabbed him, held him closed and kissed him.

Bucky held him even closer and felt tears going down his eyes. Tears he had been holding onto for almost seventy years were finally coming down.

Then they let go and Steve looked at Bucky to see him breaking down.

"What's wrong love?" Steve asked gently.

"Y-you've been gone Steve! F-for almost seventy y-years!" Bucky said and burst into tears while Steve froze.

"What?"

"Howard looked for you but never found you, I took over leading the Commandos, Zola was cleared and started working for SSR now known as SHIELD but in 1970 I finally proved to them all he was reorganizing HYDRA so me and the Commandos stopped them for good. Then they retired but we still hung out. Howard has a son, Peggy got married and has a few kids, along with all four of my sisters, and so much more has been going on." Bucky said shaking his head. "Hell I even became General Barnes within ten years and Colonel Phillips actually cried!"

"He what?!" Steve said and burst out laughing. "Oh god! I wish I could've seen that!"

"Oh that made my day even better." Bucky said smiling and frowned.

"What's wrong Bucky?" Steve asked gently. "And why do you look so young?"

"The day you found the 107th, I was given a serum like yours. Except I still have my peanut allergy. Which sucks but I'll take it." Bucky said and they chuckled. "Anyway, that's why I healed so fast after you found me. And uh, I can get pregnant now to." he said and Steve froze. "Th-that day we were going to Russia, I found out I was expecting. When I lost you I um, I had a miscarriage. Peggy and Colonel Phillips were there. Only they knew about our relationship, the serum, my pregnancy and all that. I told Howard about the serum so he could see what could happen as I get older a few years later and we learned that, I might stay looking twenty eight until I die. If I die is more like it."

"Oh Bucky." Steve said gently and held Bucky close while tears started coming down. "I'm so sorry." he said gently and kissed his head. "We can try again if you want." he said and Bucky nodded.

"Don't leave me again." Bucky whispered.

"I'm not going anywhere." Steve whispered and gave him a kiss.

Two weeks later.

At a mountain range a helicopter sped over this mountain at high-speed to a SHIELD/NASA facility.

There was a frantic evacuation in progress where agents, scientists, and personnel rushed around the base frantically as a man flushed people by and the sign on the building read:

JOINT DARK ENERGY MISSION; WESTERN DIVISION; PROJECT PEGASUS, NASA SPACE RADIATION FACILITY, S.H.I.E.L.D ACCELERATOR TEST FACILITY

Security Guards directed traffic while SHIELD agents assisted people, some stuff the trunks of their cars and leave the campus.

The helicopter slowed above a landing pad with agent Coulson waiting.

Then the door slid open and out came Hill, Fury and Bucky walking over to Coulson.

"How bad is it?" Fury asked.

"That's the problem, sir. We don't know." Coulson said.

A few minutes later an elevator rushed down fast.

"Doctor Selvig read an…" Coulson said.

A few minutes later they were at a lower level making their way through the crowds of evacuating personnel.

"...energy surge from the Tesseract four hours ago." Coulson said.

"NASA didn't authorize Selvig could go to test B." Fury said.

"There never should've been a test B Nick." Bucky said.

"He wasn't testing it. He wasn't even in the room. Spontaneous event."

"It just turned itself on?" Hill said.

"The Tesseract doesn't work like that Hill." Bucky said.

"Where are the energy levels now?" Fury asked.

"Climbing. When Selvig couldn't shut it down we ordered evac." Coulson said.

"How long to get everyone out?"

"Campus should be clear in the next half hour."

"That's not going to work. The last time something like this happened other than Carol was Red Skull and he disappeared in seconds to God only knows where." Bucky said.

"Do better." Fury said and he, Bucky and Hill continued on as Coulson turned around and headed the other way.

A few minutes later they were on a staircase heading down to the lower levels.

"Sirs, evacuation may be futile." Hill said.

"We should tell them to go back to sleep?" Fury said and Bucky snorted.

"If we can't control the Tesseract's energy there may not be a minimum safe distance."

"No one can control the Tesseract Hill." Bucky said.

"I need you to make sure the Phase Two prototypes are shipped out." Fury said.

"Have you lost you're damn mind?!" Bucky asked and looked at Hill. "Tell me, he's finally lost his damn mind."

"Sir, is that really a priority right now?" Hill asked.

"Until such time as the world ends we will act as though it intends to spin on. Clear out the tech below. Every piece of Phase Two on a truck and gone." Fury said.

"Yes, Sir." Hill said. "With me." she said to the guards.

"You're gonna end up in a mental hospital one of these days. I swear to god Nick." Bucky said shaking his head as he and Fury entered the Tesseract room making their way over to Erik Selvig. "And I'm not letting you out."

"Talk to us, Doctor." Fury said.

"Director, General." Selvig said.

"Is there anything we know for certain?"

"That I don't already know thank's to Howard and Peggy?" Bucky said with his arms crossed.

"The Tesseract is misbehaving." Selvig said.

"It has a mind of it's own Doctor. No one can control it. Not Red Skull, Dr. Zola, Howard Stark, no one."

"Is that supposed to be funny?" Fury asked.

"No, it's not funny at all. The Tesseract is not only active, she's misbehaving." Selvig said.

"How soon can you pull the plug?"

"She's an energy source. We turn off the power, she turns it back on. If she reaches peak level-"

"We prepared for this, Doctor. Harnessing energy from space."

"We don't have the harness. My calculations are far from complete. She's throwing off interference, radiation. Nothing harmful, low levels of Gamma radiation."

"That can be harmful. Where's agent Barton?"

"The hawk? Up in his nest, as usual." Selvig said and Bucky looked up.

On a balcony Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye was observing the lab.

"Agent Barton. Report." Fury said over Clint's radio and Clint zip-lined down a rope.

"I gave you this detail so you could keep a close eye on things." Fury said stern as he, Bucky and Clint walked toward the Tesseract machine.

"I see better from a distance." Clint said.

"Have you seen anything that might set this thing off?"

"Doctor! It's spiking again." a NASA scientist called out to Selvig as Clint, Bucky and Fury stepped onto the platform, in front of the Tesseract machine.

"No one's come and gone. And Selvig's clean. No contacts, no IM. If there's any tampering, sir, it wasn't this end." Clint said while Selvig walked over to the computer where the NASA scientist was looking concerned and worried.

"At this end?" Fury said a little confused.

"The end of what?" Bucky asked and thought about what Steve told him when Red Skull disappeared. "Unless,"

"Yeah. The Cube is a doorway to the other end of space, right? Doors open from both sides." Clint said and the Cube sparked.

"What's that?" Selvig said and it sparked again.

Behind a truck Coulson stood as the grounds of the campus shook and he grabbed the truck.

At security level four Hill turned and looked around her, hearing a creaking noise as the building shook.

In the Tesseract Chamber room the Cube sparked some more, bigger each time and a beam of energy opened into a portal setting off an explosion.

The beam floated to the top of the chamber and on the platform was Loki, God of Mischief and Lies, kneeling.

Several guards moved in slowly as he looked up, grinning menacingly. She stands.

Bucky, Fury and Clint stared in shock while Selvig looked in awe and horror as Loki looked around and Fury was ready to act.

"Sir, please put down the spear!" Fury said to Loki who looked at his scepter and fired a stream on blue light from it.

Clint pushed Fury out the way while Bucky jumped to the side and the guards open fire. Loki jumped at them, firing more energy and fighting.

Shooting scientists and agents while Clint moved towards him but Loki grabbed his arm.

"You have heart." Loki said, touched the tip of the spear to Clint's chest and his eyes became ice blue.

He put his gun away and Loki moved to another agent and did the same as he's done to Clint.

Bucky pulled the Cube from the machine it was in and shut it in a briefcase, then he and Fury moved to leave.

"Please don't. I still need that." Loki said to Bucky turning around.

"This doesn't have to get any messier." Fury said.

"Of course it does. I've come too far for anything else. I am Loki, of Asgard. And I am burdened with glorious purpose." Loki said as Selvig, checking the pulse of NASA scientist, heard and approached.

"Loki, brother of Thor?" Selvig said and Bucky looked at him confused.

'Thor exists? Coulson wasn't lying?' Bucky thought and shook his head.

"We have no quarrel with your people." Fury said.

"An ant has no quarrel with a boot." Loki said.

"You planning to step on us?"

"Because, I've had worse." Bucky said.

"I come with glad tidings, of a world made free." Loki said.

"Free from what?" Fury asked.

"Freedom. Freedom is life's great lie. Once you accept that, in your heart-" Loki said, turned and put the spear tip on Selvig's chest. "-you will know peace." he said and Clint saw the Tesseract portal cloud, brewing and moved to Loki.

"Yeah, you say peace. I kinda think you mean the other thing."

"Sir, Director Fury and General Barnes are stalling. This place is about to blow and drop a hundred feet of rock on us. He means to bury us." Clint said to Loki.

"Like the pharaohs of old."

"OK, now that, makes me feel young." Bucky said.

"He's right. The portal is collapsing in on itself. We've got maybe two minutes before this goes critical." Selvig said.

"Well then." Loki said and Clint quickly drew his gun and shot Bucky, who dropped the case having a flashback of the HYDRA fight in 1970.

Clint picked up as he, Loki, Selvig and another agent left the room while Bucky came back.

"Shit." Bucky said.

'I need to see my therapist more often.' he thought rubbing his forehead.

In security level four Clint and the others walked under the closing gate when Hill came out from the back room.

"We need this vehicles." Clint said.

"Who's that?" Hill asked seeing Loki.

"Didn't tell me." He said and the roof was slowly crumbling.

Loki got onto a SHIELD pickup truck and Selvig entered the passenger seat, holding the case.

"Hill!" Fury said over Hill's radio.

Back in the Tesseract chamber room.

"Do you copy?" Fury asked.

Back in security level four.

"Barton… has turned."

Clint pulled his gun and fired at Hill, who rolled behind the back room wall and returned fire. He entered the driver's seat of the pickup and drove off with Loki in the bed.

Back in the Tesseract chamber room Bucky stood up and he and Fury rushed out as the Tesseract cloud got bigger and bigger above him as the lab was getting destroyed.

"Get the Tesseract. Shut them down."

Back in security level four Hill threw her radio into the front seat of a SHIELD jeep, jumped in after and sped away, trying to catch up with Clint.

In a dimly lit underground tunnel SHIELD cars were chasing Clint's pickup. Loki fired a beam from his spear, flipping the car over on its head blocking the pursuing vehicles and fleeing cars.

On the lower level the portal started to collapse as Fury and Bucky tried to escape and falling debris missed them by a few inches.

On the front steps of a building Coulson was assisting evacuation, supervising guards as the wheel crates. An explosion rocked the building. They all fell as the roof dissolved faster and the four guards tried to pick up the case.

"Let's just go. No-no-no! Leave it, leave it. GO!" Coulson said to the guards.

In a dimly lit underground tunnel Clint sped up coming up on an intersection when Hill came speeding out of the right tunnel, spun the jeep around coming face to face with him, who shot through his window. She returned fire firing through the windshield.

On a military transport truck Coulson and the guards climbed into the canopy of the truck.

"We're clear upstairs, sirs…" Coulson said.

On a landing pad Fury and Bucky ran through the front door of a building and into the last waiting chopper taking off as the ground beneath started to crack up.

"...We need to go." Coulson said over Fury and Bucky's radios.

At a dimly lit underground tunnel Clint fired at Hill one more time and she fired back, finally he got the upper hand and swung in front of Hill cutting her off. She turned the jeep around and kept speeding behind them.

On the landing pad Bucky and Fury's chopper was in the air when the ground started collapsing and Bucky closed his eyes seeing when Steve was saving him and the 107th from HYDRA.

Then he took a deep breath and focused on the now.

Ever since Steve was found his PTSD had gotten worse and flashbacks fro WWII had been snapping back to him often.

Fury and Hill had been trying to get him to take time off to adapt to having Steve back he always says no.

In the Tesseract chamber room the Tesseract portal cloud exploded.

At the SHIELD/NASA facility the entire base exploded and crumbled in on itself sinking into the underground. Fury watched in horror while Bucky watched frowning from his chopper window.

In the dimly lit underground tunnel the ceiling of the tunnel fell, trapping Hill and other agents underground as Loki looked at the exit to see if they'll make it out.

At the military transport truck Coulson and the others in the canopy stared at the ground behind their truck while the ground kept collapsing, seconds behind there vehicle but they got away in time.

In a desert Loki and the others escaped the tunnel seconds before the exit was covered up by the fallen ceiling. As they drove along, Fury and Bucky's chopper chased them. Clint drove frantically as Bucky shot at them from the sky.

Loki blast the helicopter and Fury and Bucky jumped to the ground as it crashed, they kept firing as the truck drove off in the distance and stood up.

"Director, General." Coulson said over Fury and Bucky's radios. "Director Fury, General Barnes, do you copy?"

"The Tesseract is with a hostile force. We have men down. Hill?" Fury said into his radio.

"A lot of men still under. Don't know how many survivors." Hill said into her radio and Bucky hearing her getting out of a crushed jeep.

"What happened to you jeep?" Bucky asked.

"Long story."

"OK. As long as you're alright."

"Sound a general call. I want every living soul…" Fury said over her radio. "...not working rescue looking for that briefcase."

"Roger that."

"Coulson, get back to base." Bucky said into radio.

"This is a level seven." Fury said over Coulson's radio. "As of right now…" he said over Hill's radio and looked at Bucky.

"We are at war." Bucky said into his radio.

'Again.' he thought.

"What do we do?" Coulson asked in the radio and Fury thought while Bucky looked at him already knowing what he was thinking.

Later Fury and Bucky were in a dark room talking with the Council, four shadowy figures on screens.

"This is out of line, Director, General. You're dealing with forces you can't control." Councilman said. "Even after General Barnes and his crew taking down HYDRA in 1970."

"You ever been in a war, councilman? In a fire fight? Did you feel an over abundance of control?" Fury asked.

"I was when the 107th was captured." Bucky said with his arms crossed. "Shot the first in command leaving me in charge because I was second in command. When they tried to get one of my Privets I sacrificed myself to save them. Zola gave me his own version of Steve's serum and tried to brainwash me until Steve came and saved me and my crew."

"You're saying that this Asgard is declaring war on our planet?" Councilman said.

"Not Asgard, Loki." Fury said.

"He can't be working alone. What about the other one, his brother?"

"Our intelligence says Thor is not a hostile. But he's worlds away and we can't depend on him to help either. It's up to us."

"Which is why you should be focusing on Phase Two, it was designed for exactly this purpose."

"We never should've created Phase Two." Bucky said. "The Tesseract should've been kept in the ocean where it belonged. If Howard had just left it there none of this would've happened."

"Phase Two isn't ready; our enemy is. We need a response team." Fury said.

"The Avengers Initiative was shut down." Councilman said.

"This isn't about the Avengers."

"We're running the world's greatest covert security network with one of the best soldiers there is right next to you and you're gonna leave the fate of the human race to a handful of freaks." Councilman said and looked at Bucky, "No offense General."

"None taken Councilman. I've heard worse, especially in the 40's and 50's. And thank you for the calling me one of the best soldiers." Bucky said nodding.

"I'm not leaving anything to anyone. We need a response team. These people may be isolated, unbalanced even, but I believe, with the right push, they can be exactly what we need." Fury said.

"You believe!" Councilwoman said.

"War isn't won by sentiment, Director, General." Councilman said.

"No, It's won by soldiers." Fury said and he and Bucky looked at each other knowing what to do.
