Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Sailor Stars: Chaos Theory

Act 12: Battle Among the Stars

By: Sora Kazeno

What is Usagi doing while Chaos has control of her body?

A rustling sound led Usagi to look up. It was Princess Serenity. She stood on the other side of the bars. She was very confused at what she saw before her. Usagi scrambled to her feet and rushed next to her to talk. "Why is this happening?" She asked her.

Princess Serenity lowered her yes. "We want two different things," she said she pushed a few strains of her long hair to the side.

"What do you mean? We are the same person! How can we want two different things?"

"Prince Endymion is my soul mate," Princess Serenity said with a smile. The smile quickly vanished as she continued to speak "but I don't think Chiba Mamoru is Tsukino Usagi's soul mate."

Usagi gasped at her words. Then she began to feel angry. "But we are the same person with the same soul mate!" Usagi's heart was beating heavily in her chest.

"No. We are two different people that want two different things," Princess Serenity repeated with her eyes cast downward. "Because we want two different things it creates conflict and Chaos thrives on conflict."

"I don't believe you," Usagi said as she narrowed her eyes at her former self. "I am just a reincarnation of you."

"That's just it. You've lived most of your live as Tsukino Usagi and it took you over a decade to recover your memories of your past life. To end the conflict you have to pick between Chiba Mamoru and Seiya Kou. You have to choose," Princess Serenity said as she vanished.

Usagi stood there silent for a moment wondering what was happening. Why did she have to pick between Mamoru and Seiya? Of course she cared about Seiya but not in the same manner that she cared about Mamoru. Her mind flashed back to when she kissed Seiya in the park. Usagi slumped to her knees and for the first time really thought about how she felt about Seiya. Had she really developed feelings more than friendship along the way? She wasn't so sure anymore.

Seiya stared out his window as his mind replayed the events of the past 72 hours. He kissed Usagi and then learned that she had a future daughter with Mamoru, which disappeared in front of his eyes because the future she came from no longer existed. Usagi already had her future mapped out for her and he wasn't in it. Yet she went to the future to eliminate her future self and Mamoru. What was that supposed to mean? As much as he tried he couldn't overcome the feelings he still had for her. He sighed. He couldn't just stop caring about her. She was Sailor Cosmos now. The most powerful senshi in the galaxy but underneath it all was still the girl he fell in love with.

Sailor Neptune slowly pushed past the large door. It was heavier than she imagined and she was luckily she was able to push it open. She looked around at her surroundings in amazement. As she looked around the entrance hallway everything looked vaguely familiar. She wandered around the first floor of the castle. She paused in various rooms to examine its contents. She passed by a large ballroom and paused at the piano. She played a few notes before she moved on. She tried to imagine the parities that were held here in the past. She took one last look at the ballroom as she headed out the open double doors. The next room she came across was the throne room. Her eyes were immediately drawn to the empty chair. She closed her eyes and imagined a young woman sitting on the throne as she as a child ran in the room to greet her. Sailor Neptune opened her eyes and gasped as she realized she was recalling fragments of memories from her past life. She walked around to the other side of the room and traced the emblem on one of the banners. She felt a groove behind the banner and moved the fabric to the side to look behind it. The symbol of Neptune was engraved in the wall. She had a compulsion to touch it. She wasn't sure why. She traced the emblem in the wall. A loud rumble began to occur behind the wall. Sailor Neptune took a step back as the wall slowly began to move. Once the wall was gone she saw a long dark corridor with a descending staircase. She took a deep breath and began to climb down the stairs.

Sailor Venus stopped at a sign she saw. It took her a few moments to decipher the language. It read, "Only those with pure hearts may enter these sacred grounds". She noticed the symbol of Venus at the bottom of the sign. The wording also made her think of when the Death Busters were after pure heart crystals. She looked past the sign and saw what looked like a temple. The architecture seemed familiar to her. She didn't have time to wonder about it. She slowly took a few steps past the sign her eyes still focused on the temple. Nothing happened. She quickened her pace and continued to the footsteps of the temple.

Sailor Mercury sighed in relief that the temperature gradually dropped as she continued to descend down the crater. She had wondered how she managed to live here in the past. Mercury did not have an atmosphere which made it extremely hot or cold depending on whether the planet was facing the sun. The more she thought about it the more she thought of the possibility of Mercury having an atmosphere long ago.

Sailor Mercury paused as she looked at the significant drop of roughly thirty feet. She surveyed her surroundings as she attempted to find something to make it easier for herself but she was unsuccessful. She was just going to have drop down. She saw a narrow ledge that seemed to hug the large stone to her right. She decided to slowly walk on the edge around the rock to the other side hoping to find a path. She gasped when she realized she stood before the ruins of an ancient city.

"How could we just leave after we lost a senshi?" Sailor Chi questioned Sailor Cosmos. She was frustrated how quickly they had left when she believed they had the upper hand.

"Do not worry about Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon," Sailor Cosmos said as she sat down on her throne exhausted. "Her starseed will be put to good use…soon," she said with a smile.

"Why didn't we collect the other senshi's starseeds?" Asked Sailor Phi who stood next to Sailor Chi. "If we had their starseeds they won't be able to stop us."

"This vessel is continuing to fight my control. I must find a way to stop the Moon Princess," Sailor Cosmos said as she rubbed her temples. "Let me for now. I must rest."

Sailor Chi and Sailor Phi gave a small bow and left the throne room.

Mamoru sighed as he looked out at the city beneath him. He wondered how things had turned out the way they had. Within the past 96 hours he had his starseed taken and his memories were returned to him. Usagi was actually a bit strange and before he could talk to her her starseed was taken and she was consumed by Chaos. He learned of the legend of Sailor Cosmos and Usagi becomes Sailor Cosmos. She goes to Crystal Tokyo and kills their future selves. Chibi Usa appeared briefly to only disappear and the other senshi left on a quest. He was being to wonder when his life became so complicated.

He thought back to earlier this evening when Chibi Usa vanished in his arms. He couldn't admit it at the time but it terrified him. Seeing Chibi Usa represented hope that things would turn out but once she disappeared it meant the future they had seen nearly two years ago didn't exist. They were in a dangerous territory with an unknown outcome. He wasn't used to things like this.

Mamoru looked up at the night sky as he thought about everything Usagi has been through in past year. He left Tokyo to study in America, the battle against Chaos , the battle against Queen Beryl and now the current battle against Chaos. He thought about how everything seemed to fall apart since he left her alone. The girls did their best to cheer her up but it seemed like only the Three Lights could cheer her up, well one in particular. Their relationship changed because of it.

He thought back before the final battle against Queen Beryl when they were discussing marriage. For the past two weeks it was like he didn't exist because he didn't have his memories. He had forgotten her. Again. In last two weeks she changed as Chaos slowly began to consume her. She was so distant the night before when she was over here. He should have pressed the issue to have her stay for a little while or least walk her home. No matter how much he thought everything over he blamed himself for this and felt like he could have done more for her.

There was something Sailor Cosmos said that he could get out of his mind. Tsukino Usagi and Chiba Mamoru were not soul mates. How was that possible?

Sailor Saturn shivered as she felt a sudden jolt of cold. It confirmed her suspicious. Chibi Usa was gone. Her thoughts were redirected toward her mission of unlocking her powers. She had to find a way to help Sailor Moon. If the Princess was saved Chibi Usa would return. She tightened her grip on her glaive as she focused on her resolve.

She was at the entrance to a cemetery and given the nature of her powers she thought it would be important to investigate. Her eyes slowly scanned each row of tombstones searching for some kind of sign of where she should go to next. A large tombstone ahead of her caught her attention. It had the symbol of Saturn on it.

Yaten sighed as he signed his name for the umpteenth time. He didn't understand why they still did some publicity things even though they had disbanded and found their Princess. He believed it was because the two missed singing and the spotlight. Yaten thought it was too much trouble to be an idol. Yaten looked over at Taiki and saw him smiling and talking with a fan. Seiya seemed to be in his own little world. Yaten frowned for a moment and then passed the autograph card back to the young woman with little hearts her eyes. He collected the next card and greeted the next person.

Seiya couldn't focus on anything other than Usagi. He couldn't stop thinking about the kiss. Galaxia's words that Chaos makes a person do things they normally would. Sailor Cosmos saying Tsukino Usagi and Chiba Mamoru weren't soul mates. He wanted to know what it meant. A part of him will always hope he has a small chance. He couldn't stop thinking about her no matter how hard he tried. He wished they could have talked after school or at least protected her from the Sailor Animates then Chaos wouldn't have consumed her. Seiya thought of the bright side for the moment that Chaos didn't have complete control over Usagi. Then there was the idea that she would have daughter with Mamoru in the future. But then Sailor Cosmos went to the future to kill their future selves claiming it freed her from her destiny. He just wanted something to make sense. No matter how many times he asked himself the same questions, he still did not have any more answers.

"Seiya!" Yaten yelled at him. His outburst snapped Seiya out of his thoughts. He looked down at the autograph card and realized he made a doodle that kind of resembled Sailor Moon. The high school student looked confused at the drawing but was really happy to have such a unique autograph from her favorite singer. Seiya handed her the card and she was off on her merry way.

"Pay attention to the fans," scolded Yaten.

"Hmm," Seiya mumbled as he nodded his head.

Usagi continued to stare at the bars that confined her. She felt like she was going mad trying to find a way out. She was sitting on the floor, her knees tucked into her chest. How could Mamoru not be here soulmate? That is how it has always been. She replayed different life events in her mind. She thought about to when she first met Mamoru. All of the things he said to her before they remembered their past identities. He wasn't very nice to her when he called her Odango Atama. She thought of how Tuxedo Kamen would could come to her rescue briefly, say something, and then leave when everyone was searching for the Moon Princess. At that time she was excited just to be able to see Tuxedo Kamen. She thought back to when Zoicite nearly killed them in the elevator. If she hadn't revealed her identity as Sailor Moon they might have been crushed. As soon as they both received their memories back from their past lives things changed dramatically. Then she thought about when she first met Seiya. He teased her but promised to protect her from the beginning. He even transformed and gave away his secret identity even when Taiki and Yaten protested when she was danger to save her life. He saved her countless times during the battle against Sailor Galaxia. She smiled and felt warmth for the first time in days.

Seiya was special to her. But in what way? Did she love him too? This realization made her gasp as she thought about Princess Serenity's words. She had to choose between them. She shook her head trying to deny such an absurd thought. She had Mamo-chan.

Her jaw dropped when she remembered something Sailor Galaxia said. Chaos allows a person to do something that they normally wouldn't do. Because of Chaos she kissed Seiya. What scared her more than anything was the thought that she wanted to kiss him even with Chaos.

'No!' Usagi thought as tried to make sense of all the emotions she was experiencing. She couldn't love two people at once. It has always been Mamoru. She kept trying to tell herself she had Mamoru but a part of her was screaming in protest. She rubbed her temples as tried to calm her nerves. She had never felt so confused in her life.

Sailor Pluto continued to follow the narrow path. She stopped next to what looked like a very large dying tree. This was the first change of scenery she had observed since she began her quest. It was worth investigating. Every second counted. She circled the tree. Nothing looked out of the ordinary. She was about to walk away when her boot hit something near the tree roots. She examined the tree again a second time. This time she noticed a section where the bark was cut away by hand. She moved a little of the bark and a door swung open. She jumped out of the way just in time to avoid being hit by the door. Sailor Pluto raised an eyebrow as she saw a few steps leading down a tunnel. Her gut was telling her this was the way to go so she continued on.

Sailor Jupiter looked around in awe at the greenery surrounding her. She had entered a forest. She found it only fitting given her last name. She continued her journey into the forest and was greeted by two fairies.

"Princess Makoto, we have been waiting for you!" A green haired fairy in a short purple dress exclaimed. Her companion to her right was dressed in a short blue dress and she had blonde hair. "We are the guardians of this forest and we've been waiting centuries for you!"

Sailor Jupiter hesitated at first but then followed the two fairies. They seemed to know her. She wanted to believe that they had good intentions. They led her deeper in the forest. She had to move quickly to keep up with their pace.

Yaten looked at the large group of faces that were still swarming them. He sighed. Everywhere he went there was still a large crowd. He hated this part of being an idol. But it was decided they would do some of this to keep up appearances. He hoped the fans would leave soon as he gave them another fake smile.

Yaten's wish was granted but just not in the way he expected.

"Ohh! It's the Three Lights!" Sailor Cosmos exclaimed very loudly for them to hear. "I've always wanted their autograph!"

Seiya dropped the pen he was holding to sign an autograph when he heard her voice. He knew this wasn't going to end well.

Taiki narrowed his eyes as he noticed Sailor Cosmos and to her immediate right was Sailor Chi.

Sailor Cosmos turned to Sailor Chi before she continued to speak, "there are too many people here with impure starseeds. Get rid of them."

Sailor Chi nodded her head as she acknowledged Sailor Cosmos' orders. She blasted large bolts of energy near the group that surrounded the Three Lights. The fans screamed and quickly dispersed in a frenzy trying to get out of harm's way. Sailor Chi stood her distance from Sailor Cosmos waiting to hear what her next move would be.

The Three Lights still stood there. They knew what this was about and they were not about to run away. Once they were sure the others had left, Taiki and Yaten pulled out their star headsets. Seiya stood frozen there as he looked as Sailor Cosmos.

"Healer Star Power, Make up!"

"Maker Star Power, Make Up!"

The two Sailor Starlights looked over at Seiya in confusion wondering why he was standing there not moving.

"Seiya!" Sailor Star Healer shouted at him clearly irritated. "Don't just stand there! Transform!" She directed him but he didn't budge.

Seiya seemed to snap out of his daze for a moment to pull out his star headset. But then he saw Sailor Cosmos again and his arm fell to side still holding the headset. He tried to transform. He knew that he needed to but it was Usagi. "I can't fight Odango," he said softly as he looked at the woman before him.

Sailor Cosmos smiled at his weakness. "You must really care for this woman if you are willing to go to such lengths to try to protect her," she said as she eyed his actions.

Seiya felt like he could finally talk freely to her for the first time in front the others. He felt like he didn't have anything to lose at the moment. "I would do anything to protect her," Seiya said as he took a few steps forward. She didn't move as he continued to walk closer to her. "How can I not protect the one I love?" He asked her, hoping to get some type of response from her.

"Seiya…" Sailor Star Maker said softly with pain her eyes. He was finally able to admit it out loud, something that she had seen for what seemed like ages.

"Odango, you can't let Chaos win," he said as he continued to move forward. Sailor Cosmos didn't respond other than to continue to stare at him. It was almost as if she was confused. He continued to talk as he hoped he could get through to her. "Odango, you're strong then this. Come back to us. Come back to me," Seiya said as he grabbed her wrists covering the golden bracelets.

Sailor Cosmos stared at him for a moment. Tears began to trickle down her cheeks. She blinked and her once darkened eyes were once again their normal cerulean color. The tears began to increase as they flowed more freely from her eyes. "Se..Seiya…" she murmured in Usagi's voice. The icy tone of Chaos was gone. "Help me…" she pleaded softly as she continued to fight for control.

Sailor Star Maker and Sailor Star Healer kept their distance as they watched this scene unfold. For a moment they felt like they could stop Chaos as long they could reach Sailor Moon.

Sailor Chi narrowed her eyes at the tender scene before her. Seiya was a threat to Chaos' control over the vessel. He was a threat that needed to neutralized. Sailor Chi wasn't going to wait for orders. She moved at the speed of light and attacked Seiya. "Leave her alone!" She yelled at him.

Seiya cried out in pain as the dark energy hit him. He had never experienced such dark energy before. He collapsed in Sailor Cosmos' arms.

"Seiya!" Sailor Cosmos exclaimed as he caught him before he could hit the ground. She nearly fell over as she tried to support both of their weight. She slowly laid Seiya on the ground and turned her attention to Sailor Chi. The star emblem on her forehead was flashing.

Sailor Star Maker and Sailor Star Healer stood their frozen. They wanted to rush forward and help Seiya but the stance that Sailor Cosmos had taken made them think twice.

Sailor Cosmos raised her left hand and shouted, "Cosmos Twilight Flash!" Golden light emitted from Sailor Cosmos' hand. The light surround Sailor Chi and she cried out in pain. When the light finally faded all that was left of Sailor Chi were two bracelets suspended in the air.

The two Starlights looked on in shock. Sailor Cosmos had just eliminated her strongest follower because she had attacked Seiya.

The two bracelets floated over to Sailor Cosmos. They hovered over her outstretched hand. Sailor Cosmos closed her hand in a fist and the bracelets disappeared. She slowly bent down and sat on her knees next to Seiya. She lifted him so his head rested on her knees. She pushed a few strands of his black hair to the side. Seiya winced in pain. A golden light began to emit from Sailor Cosmos and the light washed over Seiya.

Seiya felt warm as the light passed over him. The pain in his side was gradually becoming less and less. Seiya slowly opened his eyes and saw cerulean eyes staring back at him. Sailor Cosmos began to fall over to her side. Seiya immediately got up and caught her before she fell. Her eyes showed she was exhausted. But the sparkle that was just there a moment ago was quickly fading. Usagi was losing control. She pushed Seiya out of the way as the purple and green jewels on her wrists began to glow from dark energy. A few tears escaped from her eyes before Sailor Cosmos vanished.

Seiya stared at the spot she was just in. She was gone again.

"Princess!" Sailor Star Healer exclaimed as Princess Kakyuu walked forward.

Seiya rose to his feet and turned around to face the others. "Chaos doesn't have complete control over her," Seiya said as he smiled for the time time all day.

Princess Kakyuu smiled back at his statement. She was relieved to finally see him smile again. But there was something else that had been bothering her and she knew Seiya would no longer be smiling after what she was about to say. "We haven't spoken to Mamoru-san in nearly two days. We need to check on him."

Seiya sighed. He knew she was right. He didn't to know what was happening to Usagi. Taiki and Yaten looked at Seiya as if they expected him to say something. "What?" Seiya asked confused by the look he was receiving.

After a moment the realization hit Taiki. "You don't know where to find him, do you?"

Yaten snickered at Taiki comment. "This is too good," said Yaten with a twinkle in his eye. "We are supposed to work together and keep in contact, yet no one knows how to reach each other."

Seiya teardopped at Yaten's comment. Not once did he think about contacting Mamoru and with the girls gone he had no way to contact him.

Princess Kakyuu was silent for a moment. "We will find a way."

Sailor Uranus couldn't help but find it humorous that her hunch had paid off. She couldn't wait to tell Michiru her good fortune later since she has been notorious for her past hunches to not pay off. This was another reason she went Michiru's predictions. On the side of the mountain was a castle. She knew it was going to be a climb down that would be dangerous with all the snow. She wasn't sure if there was ice hidden underneath the snow. She smiled at the challenge. She had been through worse. No one ever said it was going to be easy to obtain her new powers.

Sailor Mars continued her journey through the desert. She stopped in her tracks at what she saw before her. It looked like an illusion but she continued forward. She continued forward and the mirage was still there. The mirage included a small pond, trees with fresh fruit growing in them, and two large black birds walking around in the grass. She stared at the scene before her. She closed her eyes for a minute and when she opened them again everything was still there. Her gut feeling was telling her she was in the right location so she continued forward.

As Sailor Mars walked closer she recognized the two black birds were actually two blacks crows that looked identical to the two that lived at the Hikawa Shrine. Sailor Mars took it as a sign that she was in the right location. She walked forward to the two crows and stopped at the one closest to her.

The crow tilted its head to the side and said, "we have been expecting you Princess Rei. I am Phobos," the crow said. The crow gestured with its head and said, "this is Deimos. Come with us."

Sailor Mars nodded her head in response and followed the two birds as they led her away from the oasis.

Mamoru put his water glass down on the counter. He realized he couldn't stay in his apartment any longer. The morning sun's rays were dimly lighting up the room, the rest were blocked by curtains. He needed to be able to help the others. He picked up the telephone and was about to dial a number. He froze. He knew Usagi's number, he knew the other senshi's number but he didn't have a way to contact the Three Lights. He frowned at the irony. The one time he wanted to talk to them in the past couple of days and he couldn't.

He grabbed his shoes by the front door and quickly put them on. He tied them and grabbed his apartment keys. He paused for a moment debating if he should take his car or his motorcycle. After a moment he decided to go on foot since the traffic at this time of day would be horrendous. He knew the Three Lights would live somewhere in the Juuban district due to the high school they attended. He decided he would start there. He walked out of his apartment and closed the door. He locked it and quickly headed to the staircase to make his way down to the front entrance. His thoughts were focused on Usagi.

Mamoru walked out of the front entrance to his apartment building. He began to head north and was shocked to see Luna. Luna quickly closed the gap between them and jumped up on Mamoru's shoulder to make it easier to talk to him.

"Have you heard anything?" Luna asked him quietly.

Mamoru shook his head as he waited for a group of people to pass before he spoke to Luna. "I was about to ask you the same."

Luna frowned at his response. "Maybe we should visit the Three Lights?" Luna asked as she tried to be helpful.

"I was thinking the same thing," Mamoru said as he continued to head to the Juuban district. "Just tell me where to go," said Mamoru. He assumed Luna had been to their apartment before with Usagi in the past.

Luna teardropped as a realization hit her. "You don't know where it is?" She asked him. She sighed. "I don't know where it is and neither does Artemis. He is trying to find them too. Usagi-chan had only been there one time and I wasn't with her."

Mamoru chuckled at the predicament. "This is something Usako would do," he said with a small smile as he thought of her.

Luna began to laugh in agreement. "We will have to tell her this story at some point… when we have her back…" Luna said as her voice trailed off."

"Yeah," Mamoru said and his voice also became distant as he recalled events from a few days prior.

"Did you hear what happened at Ichi no Hashi park?" A young girl said to her friends as she passed by Mamoru and Luna. "I heard the Three Lights were there and this crazy lady dressed in white attacked a group of fans yesterday."

Mamoru froze in his tracks. It had to be Sailor Cosmos. Mamoru looked at Luna and she nodded his head in agreement. Mamoru took off running in the direction of the park the girl was talking about.

Chaos picked Usagi up by the neck and threw her to the other end of the cage she was being held in. Her back slammed in the bars as she slumped down onto the floor in pain.

"I've already taken your starseed, why is it so difficult to control you?" Chaos yelled at Usagi trying to understand why his control was still not absolute yet. "You are sealed in this box yet you are still giving me problems." He said as he glared at her crumpled up form.

Usagi slowly opened her eyes but did not respond as Chaos continued to yell at her.

"I should just kill you," he said as he narrowed his eyes at her. "But then I would be giving up power and that is unacceptable. The other senshi are so much weaker in comparison. If you aren't going to cooperate I will just continue to go after the ones you love the most until I kill them," Chaos said with a smile as he disappeared.

Usagi felt tears streaming down her face. She didn't know what to do. She had to find a way to escape this prison but everything she tried had been unsuccessful. She sobbed in defeat as she worried about everyone.
