"Let's go for a walk."
Eddie wanted to object immediately, but as soon as he looked into Steve's wide, hopeful eyes, he couldn't say no. Sighing, he resigned himself to his fate. "Okay."
It was still warm, so Eddie left his jacket behind, following Steve down a dirt path into the forest. The sounds of the town faded away quickly, and soon, it was just the crunch of their feet echoing in the trees. Steve held out his hand as soon as the trees were thick enough to obscure them, and Eddie took it, linking their fingers together with a grin.
"So, what prompted this romantic afternoon stroll?"
Steve smiled back, squeezing Eddie's hand. "Nothing. Just wanted to spend some time with you."
"We were already hanging out."
"Yeah, but it's nice out. Wanna enjoy the sun whilst it lasts."
Eddie rolled his eyes but didn't poke fun. He knew Steve liked the outdoors far more than he did. No wonder Steve always had a tan, making Eddie look even paler than usual when they stood together. It wasn't like he minded this, going on walks or whatever with Steve. It was nice. More than nice. But it sucked they couldn't do it in public. If someone saw them holding hands like this, it would form a lynch mob. And Eddie had had enough of those after him for a lifetime.
"You know, we should move outta Hawkins," Steve said, too light to be serious. "Get a farm and some sheep or something."
"We could ride horses and kiss in the barn."
"I know you're making fun of me, but that sounds nice."
"Yeah, it does." Eddie stopped, tugging on Steve's hand to pull him in for a kiss. "Maybe we should run away. But we'd have to take Wayne."
"Deal."
