Chapter 1
It was a long day at Star Gate Command for Major Samantha Carter. She worked tirelessly to get her presentation together for the Pentagon officials pulling a sixteen hour day. She needed to get to the airport for the flight to Washington D.C. to make her time slotted at the Pentagon and the White House. She wanted Jack to come with her for support but he was already packed to go to his cabin with Teal'c for leave. Daniel had buried himself in more research and Sam found herself going alone.
She changed into civilian clothing for the flight. Her bag and briefcase in the backseat of the car. It was two o'clock in the morning with a light drizzle of rain. The traffic light up ahead was green. As she proceeded through the intersection she caught a glimpse of headlights out of the corner of her eye. The impact was directly on the driver's side door, thus Sam felt the energy as the pickup truck hit her car. At that point time seemed to slow for Sam as she lost control. The event played out in slow motion before her eyes as the car rolled and flipped over onto the road. Then everything went black.
Sam heard sirens as she came around. She wasn't sure what just happened at first. She then recalled the slow motion of the car rolling. She knew she was in a car accident at that moment. She felt the pressure from the seatbelt on her shoulder as she realized she was upside down. She tried to stay awake but the head injury soon took it's toll and she lost consciousness soon after.
Sam came to as she felt herself being laid on a backboard. For a moment she got a look at her car upside down on the road. She was surrounded by firemen in full gear. She was then strapped to the board. She tried to move her head but found she could not due to the neck collar that the responders placed upon her previously. She then saw a face of a young woman directly above her, looking down at her from behind.
"Don't move your head." the paramedic instructed. She shined a light into Sam's blue eyes. "Stay with me." she pleaded as Sam's eyes were not responding. She shouted to the fireman. "Let's move."
Sam then lost consciousness again as the fireman and the paramedic moved her into the back of the ambulance. She then heard the sounds of a siren as she regained consciousness. She noticed the lights were bright but she could not move.
The paramedic sat beside her frantically working. "Stay with me. Can you tell me your name?" she asked.
"Sam." she got out.
"I'm Eddy." she told her. "You need to try to stay with me, Sam."
She felt tired. She closed her eyes and then she felt a strange sensation as if she was floating. She found herself looking down at her own body on the gurney. She knew it was herself but the sight was shocking for sure. Sam watched as the situation unfolded as if she was a third person simply observing.
The paramedic scowled. "Fuck!" She then shouted to the driver. "She coded."
The driver radioed his dispatcher of the situation.
Sam got a good look at the paramedic, Eddy. She was short, about the same height as Janet. She hard light brown hair that was a bit messy and unkempt. Her eyes were brown and she wore a white shirt with blue pants. Sam observed as Eddy worked to save her life. She witnessed the chest compressions, the defibrillator and the injections. Nothing seem to work. A bright light appeared beside Sam. She felt as if she was being drawn towards it.
Eddy huffed. "Don't go into that light, Sam. Stay with me. Give me some time."
Sam looked back to where Eddy sat beside her body. She most surprised.
"Fuck." Eddy miffed as every attempt to start Sam's heart failed. She then made one last attempt. She ripped the glove off her hand and placed her palm on Sam's exposed sternum. She closed her eyes and shouted to the driver. "Harold! I'm gonna need a Snickers after this."
A voice shouted back. "I got it."
Sam didn't understand what the pair was talking about. She watched curiously as Eddy closed her eyes and then seemed to have gone into some kind of trance.
"I have the body." she stated.
"What?" Sam asked herself still confused. Next Sam felt herself being pulled back into her body. She suddenly opened her eyes and gasped for air. She looked over to the paramedic who then came out of the trance.
Eddy shouted. "I got her back. My sugar is going to bottom, Harold."
"One minute out." he shouted back.
Sam felt great. She never felt so good. She laid there on the gurney wondering what she just experienced. She looked to her savior. "Who are you?"
"I'm Eddy. I'm a paramedic." she assumed Sam would not recall the event for most did not.
"What just happed?" she asked.
"You were in a car accident." she told her. "We're almost to the hospital." she assured.
"How?" she asked wondering how Eddy brought her back.
"Guy hit you." she told her. "You will be okay." She peered through the to the front of the rig and spied the hospital sign ahead. "We're here." she assured.
Sam was simply beside herself. She knew something very unusual happened. She wasn't sure what to say. Was it a dream? Did she hallucinate the out of body experience? She wasn't sure.
The ambulance soon stopped and the rear doors opened. And older man with black hair and dark rimmed glasses wearing a white shirt and blue trousers handed Eddy a candy bar.
She quickly grabbed the bar. "Thanks Harold."
"Eat up, kid." he told her.
Sam watched as Eddy quickly devoured the candy before her. The pair then removed Sam from the back of the rig and rolled her and the gurney into the emergency department. She then observed as Eddy and Harold checked her into the department.
"This is Sam. She was in a M.V.A." Eddy started. "She was in and out of consciousness. She coded briefly in the rig. She is stable now."
The nurse taking the information was a much older lady with curly red hair and sporting blue scrubs. She asked. "You get your candy bar, Ed?" It was a secret code of a question.
"I did." she gave a nod.
"I see." she stated understanding.
Sam was bewildered. She was in a full arrest, witnessed the whole thing as if it played out like a movie before her and everyone just smiled and nodded. It was most bizarre. She spoke up. "I'm Major Samantha Carter. U.S. Air Force. Can someone call my C.O. and let him know I was in a car accident?"
The head nurse nodded. "I will give him a call, Major."
Sam looked to Eddy. "What's your full name?"
"Edna Winchester." she stated. "Eddy."
The nurse motioned. "Room twelve."
Eddy and Harold then began to push the gurney with Sam to the room she was assigned.
Sam found herself still strapped to the backboard. She was wheeled down the hall and into an exam room.
Harold the driver soothed. "You are good hands here, Major." He gave her a pat on the lower leg. "The nurses will be right in."
Sam held up her hand beside Eddy. "Thank you for what you did, Eddy."
She squeezed Sam's hand and smiled. "You will be fine. I promise."
Sam asked. "You ever think of joining the Air Force?"
She laughed. "No! I am taking private pilot's lessons though."
"I'll be in touch with you." Sam stated.
"Sure." she didn't believe her. "What do you do in the Air Force? You fly?"
"I'm a pilot, flight engineer and a few other things." Sam told her.
"Awesome. If I have any questions about my exam, I'll ask you." she kidded.
"You can." Sam assured her. "I'm not sure just what you did but I know you saved my life. Thank you."
"All in a days work." she assured. "That's what we do. Just get better." she released her hand. "Nurse will be right in." she told her as she and Harold left the room.
Sam laid there alone for a moment. "What the hell did I just see?" she wondered.
Harold and Eddy walked out of the emergency department. They soon headed towards the rig.
Eddy requested. "I need some real food. Let's stop and get something to eat on the way back."
"You need to be careful with that gift of yours." Harold stated. "Government finds out what you can do and you may never see the light of day again. They will take you."
"I didn't know she was Air Force." she shrugged. "She was in civilian clothes."
"Just be careful." he pleaded. "We can't afford to loose our best medic."
"You mean your only medic who can heal people by touching them." she miffed.
"That too." he agreed.
"And your only medic who sees ghost and everyone thinks is nuts." she smirked.
"Hmm." he nodded.
She sighed. "And can never get the lotto numbers." She climbed into the front seat of the rig.
He climbed behind the wheel. "We need to work on the lotto numbers." he agreed. "That or go to the casino."
"I suck at gambling." she reminded him.
He started placed the rig in drive. "One area you could improve on."
She rolled her eyes as the ambulance left the hospital and headed down the road.
Later
Jack, Daniel and Teal'c all came to the hospital that night. Sam had been roved from the backboard and neck brace and placed in a gown and then placed in another exam room in the emergency department. Her test were all clear.
Jack walked into the room sporting a leather jacket and jeans. He gave a sigh of relief upon seeing Sam sitting up in bed. "You are okay, Carter?" he came to her bed.
Daniel was already sitting beside her in jeans and a flannel shirt. Teal'c walked in behind Jack. He too wore a black jacket and jeans. He was glad to see Sam was sitting up and doing well.
"I'm fine." she told them. "I shouldn't be though."
Jack stood beside her bed. "What happened?"
"I was t-boned by a drunk in a pickup truck. Rolled my car. Thing is. I died." she insisted. "I was hurt bad."
"You died?" Jack asked confused.
"I was telling Daniel." she motioned.
Daniel smiled. "Sam may have had an out of body experience. She remembers floating above her body in the back of the ambulance and watching the paramedic work on her. The nurses did say that she coded in the ambulance and the paramedic got her back."
"It's more than that." Sam insisted. "She knew I was out of my body. There was a bright light and I was about to go into it. She told me to not go into yet. I watched her. She did something. She placed her bare hand on my chest and somehow started my heart. The compression, the shocks, the medications all failed."
"You sure you didn't dream it, Carter?" Jack asked.
"I did not dream this." she stated firmly. "And what ever she did has a side effect. She needed a candy bar when we got to the hospital. Her sugar was low."
"Maybe she's diabetic?" Jack shrugged.
"She brought me back." Sam told him. "I should be dead. I was about to go into that light. I saw myself. I knew I was dead."
"You know how this sounds, Carter?" he asked.
"You realize how it would sound if we told people half the things we saw off world, sir?" she rebutted.
"You got me there." he had to agree.
"Her name is Edna Winchester. I want to run a background check on her." Sam stated.
He gave a sigh. "We can do that. But right now, let's just get you back home. Okay."
"Okay." she agreed.
