After all the events that had happened the past few days, she wanted nothing more than to just be able to relax and get some rest, at least for tonight.
Unfortunately, fate had other plans in store for her.
"What the hell?!"
She was startled awake by Ren's yelling. It was there that, after the few moments it took for her brain to wake up as well, she realized two things.
Ren and her had somehow both fallen asleep on the bed together.
She could sense a surge of energy coming off of Ren.
She wasn't sure what was more startling to her, honestly.
"R-Ren?! What's going on?!" she exclaimed.
"I don't know!" Ren frantically answered. "I just suddenly heard Arsène's voice inside of my head, and now I suddenly feel like a surge of energy is rushing through me!"
Suddenly, Ren let out a gasp, shutting his eyes,
"Ren, are you alright?!" Makoto cried.
There is no need to fear.
"Anat?" Makoto thought.
His resolve has simply strengthened, and thus is taking a new form.
"Then, is it like when Johanna evolved into Anat?" Makoto wondered.
Just so.
She closed her eyes, and for a moment, she could see Arsène herself.
A blue glow formed around Arsène and began to completely envelop him.
Brilliant blue and white lights began to shine, and when looked again, she saw that Ren's persona had completely changed.
The new Persona had a slim, jet-black body, with a golden helmet with four wings atop its head. In one of its hands, it held a black staff with twin golden snakes entwined around it.
"Hermes…" Ren whispered. "So that's what Arsène turned into."
"So your Persona changed as well." Makoto noted. "Does it feel stronger?"
"Yeah." Ren nodded. "A lot stronger. I'm glad for that. You've been supporting and leading us this entire time… so now, I feel we'll be able to do the same for you!"
Ren raised his arms into the air.
"So, you ready to radically change society!" Ren laughed.
She laughed along with him. "There's no one else I'd rather do it with."
"Glad to hear it!" Ren grinned. "And… now that I'm stronger, let me promise you something."
He took her hand in his, staring her deeply in the eyes.
"I promise that I'll never let anyone hurt you like this again. You won't ever have to sacrifice yourself again." Ren promised.
"Ren…" Makoto whispered.
She brought his hand to the side of her face, closing her eyes.
"The sun's going to rise soon." Ren mentioned.
"Then let's greet it together." Makoto whispered.
As she leaned into him, a thought passed through her mind, and into her heart.
She would love to spend many more mornings like this…
11/21 Thursday
She knew that she would be sore in the morning, but this was a lot worse than she imagined. It was a struggle to even pick herself up out of bed.
When she managed, she saw that it was nearly noon.
She had been sleeping for a long time. That would explain why Ren was gone at the moment.
"I'm really hungry…" Makoto mumbled. "But it kinda hurts to… oh."
Right by her bedside was some water and a bowl of rice, as well as a note.
Going to class. Get well soon - Ren
She smiled, thankful for his kind gesture.
She ate her rice and took her pain medicine with the water, and soon after, the urge to rest some more overtook her.
"Still… so tired…" Makoto whispered.
It wasn't long before sleep took her once again.
When she awoke this time, she could tell it was late in the day. She was also in much less pain than yesterday and this morning.
She was about to head downstairs when-
"Hey, it's about closing time. Are you hungry?" Sojiro asked, yelling up to her.
She was starving, actually.
"Yes, please." Makoto answered.
"Alright, I'll make some curry and bring it up then." Sojiro offered.
"O-Oh, no, it's ok. I should be able to get down by myself." Makoto insisted.
"You sure?
"Yes, it's fine!"
She was finally beginning to feel like she had enough energy to get down the stairs by herself in the afternoon. It was anything but painless, but she still managed.
When she made her way down, she saw Sojiro already in the middle of preparing her curry and coffee.
"Take a seat." Sojiro told her.
She did as she was asked, waiting for Sojiro to finish.
"The boy should be stopping by soon." Sojiro told her. "Said he had to pick up a lot of medicine after school."
Right, school…
Sae had told the school that she had caught a terrible illness and would have to stay home for some time. Hopefully she would still be able to find time to study and do any work she was missing.
"Before he gets back, I wanted to talk to you." Sojiro said.
"What about?" Makoto asked, even though she had a good idea already.
Sojiro took a deep breath before replying.
"So, Phantom Thieves, huh?" Sojiro asked.
"I'm sorry that we never told you." Makoto replied. "I didn't want more people to get involved then what was necessary."
"I suppose I understand." Sojiro nodded. "Still, it's hard to imagine that I've been harboring criminals this entire time."
"T-That's-"
"Don't worry. I spoke to Futaba before. I understand." Sojiro told her. "I suppose that I have you to thank for both helping her and dealing with her uncle."
"I just couldn't leave things as they were…" Makoto trailed off. "Still, I do feel a little bad about intruding."
"At first, I was pretty mad." Sojiro admitted. "But then I realized just how much you were able to help when no one else could. I don't really think I'll ever be able to thank you enough for that.
"R-Really, no thanks are necessary." Makoto insisted.
"I suppose that this is a little selfish of me, but can I ask you to continue looking after Futaba?" Sojiro asked.
"Of course. You don't even have to ask." Makoto assured him.
"You know, at first I was just glad to have you help around the store and tutoring that kid." Sojiro told her. "But I think you really helped show me that I have a family that I need to protect. Both Futaba and Ren."
"You should tell him that." Makoto smiled. "I'm sure he'd be overjoyed to hear that."
"Heh… maybe." Sojiro grinned. "You know, now that Futaba is feeling better, I was planning on taking those two to Wakaba's grave."
"Oh… I see." Makoto nodded.
"I'm sure Futaba will tell her a lot about you." Sojiro smiled. "She really looks up to you, you know?"
"I'm flattered… really." Makoto whispered. "And I'm thankful too. I feel like you've already done so much for me."
"Don't mention it." Sojiro insisted. "I've said it before, but if there's anything else that I can do for you, don't hesitate to ask."
I am thou, thou art I…
Thou hast turned a vow into a blood oath,
Thy bond shall become the wings of rebellion
and break the yoke of thy heart.
Thou has awakened to the ultimate secret of
the Hierophant, granting thee infinite power…
HIEROPHANT CONFIDANT: RANK 10 MAX
"You know, now might be the time to show you how I make the perfect Leblanc curry." Sojiro offered. "Just promise not to tell anyone else."
"Oh, of course!" Makoto promised. "I won't tell a soul."
Sojiro taught her the last few secrets to make curry just like he did. They enjoyed a nice meal shortly before Ren arrived.
"There you are." Sojiro greeted. "Was wondering if you'd ever get here."
"Ah, sorry. Had a lot of errands to do."
"I'll be outside having a smoke if you need me." Sojiro said, exiting the cafe.
"Hello." she greeted.
"Hey." Ren waved. "I bought some more medicine."
"For our operations?" Makoto asked.
"For you." Ren stressed. "But yeah, also for that."
"Oh. Thank you for the medicine… oh, and the food. And, uh, everything." Makoto admitted.
"It's nothing, really." Ren assured her. "How are you, by the way?"
"I was really sore in the morning, but it's much better now." Makoto told him.
"Hmm…" Ren frowned.
"Really! I'm telling the truth, Ren!" Makoto exclaimed.
"Ok, ok, I believe you" Ren relented. "I'm just a little worried, is all."
He placed his hand over hers.
"Just be careful, ok?" Ren asked.
"Alright." Makoto promised. "I will be.
Ren nodded, letting out a sigh.
"About the next operation… we gathered after school and tried to think of what Shido's final keyword could be." Ren explained. "But we didn't have any luck. None of us were able to think of something. Even tried asking some politicians around the Diet Building, but no dice."
"I see. I suppose that we really don't know a lot about him." Makoto realized. "But I imagine that he'll be campaigning very hard at the moment, considering the elections."
"That's true. He even campaigns around here often…" Ren trailed off.
"You think… we could attend one of his speeches?" Makoto suggested.
"That would be crazy risky." Ren frowned. "Are you sure that's a good idea?"
"We're strapped for time." Makoto mentioned. "And we don't even have access to his palace yet. Plus, he might not know what I look like."
"But others do." Ren frowned. "We'd have to be really careful."
"And we will be." Makoto told him. "And once we find that final keyword, we won't have to worry anymore."
"Ok. Just remember that you can rely on us now too." Ren promised her.
"I know. Thank you." Makoto expressed. "We have the day off in a few days, so we can hold a strategy meeting then."
"Sounds like a plan." Ren nodded.
They talked for a little while longer before Sojiro came back in, offering to take her back to his home to rest.
She declined, however, preferring not to risk being seen while he brought her to his home.
And… a few slightly more selfish reasons as well.
Shortly after Sojiro left, she went to bed, thinking on how they would be able to take down Shido.
11/22 Friday
She felt much better this morning as opposed to yesterday. There was still quite a bit of pain, but it was nothing that she wouldn't be able to handle.
Customers were still coming and going to the cafe, so in the meantime, she spent some time trying to research Shido herself. Most of his interviews didn't really give much away, and only seemed to consist of him telling the people exactly what they wanted to hear, promising them the world, and attacking the current administration.
Further research revealed that he was in his 50s and had a storied political career. He started as an assemblyman, climbing his way up to becoming appointed a cabinet minister.
He was quite clearly a powerful member of the establishment, and not the relatable anti-establishment 'man of the people' that he wanted to come across as.
The word demagogue crossed her mind more than once as she read about him. And it seemed more and more apt the more she read.
The moment that Sojiro assured her that it was safe, she went downstairs, seeing Haru downstairs enjoying coffee with a stack of papers at her side.
"Oh, Mako-chan! There you are." Haru smiled.
"Hello, Haru." Makoto greeted. "What are the papers for?"
"Well, we told everyone that you were very ill, so I've been given the duty of delivering your homework in the meantime."
"Right! Homework! I can't believe that I forgot!" Makoto gasped. "I have to study and-"
"R-Relax, Mako-chan." Haru said. "I'm sure that you'll be fine! The materials here cover a mouth or two ahead of where we are, so you should be able to keep up."
"I hope so." Makoto replied. "Thank you for bringing this over, Haru."
"Of course, Mako-chan." Haru beamed. "But there was another reason I came here. Well, a couple of reasons, actually."
"Oh? What were they?" Makoto asked.
"First of all, I wanted to make sure that you were ok." Haru answered. "But I also wanted to talk to you more about my recent interest in coffee."
"Oh, right!" Makoto recalled. "How's that been going?"
"Well, recently, I bought a mini roaster and a coffee mill." Haru told her. "I thought it would be fun making coffee myself."
"How's that been going?" Makoto asked.
"It's certainly not easy, but it's an immensely satisfying process." Haru replied.
Haru looked like she wanted to say more, but she suddenly let out a large yawn.
"O-Oh, sorry. I haven't been getting much sleep recently." Haru confessed.
"I-It wasn't cause of me, was it?" Makoto asked.
"Oh, no no no!" Haru denied. "It's not that I wasn't worried about you, but it was… another reason."
"The… coffee?" Makoto guessed.
"Ah, no, not that either." Haru shook her head. "It has to do with Okumura Foods again.
"Ah, I see." Makoto nodded.
"Sorry, I know we have bigger problems to deal with right now…" Haru trailed off.
"No, no, it's fine. You can tell me." Makoto insisted.
"Alright… It's just that Takakura-san has really been pushing for us to start a new business venture soon." Haru began. "He's been rather adamant about a chain of low-cost, intimate cafes."
"Cafes?" Makoto repeated. "Well, maybe this is your chance. You could convince him to try cafes your way."
"Well, the problem is there are already so many employees that don't think it's a good idea." Haru told her. "So they want me to step in and put a stop to it…"
"So it's a divisive issue?" Makoto asked.
"Yes. But I'm just a high schooler…" Haru sighed. "There's no way I could predict the success or failure of any of this…"
"Did your father at least teach you a little about the business?" Makoto asked.
"Not much, aside from some of the basics. I don't think he ever expected me to inherit leadership… or to die so soon." Haru sighed.
"Well… what do you want to do?" Makoto asked.
"Me? That's a good question." Haru said. "But it's not really one I'm used to being asked…"
Haru thought it over for a few minutes, pounding deeply over her options.
"The idea does sound nice… the smell of a fresh cup of coffee always brings a smile to my face." Haru admitted. "And it certainly would be nice to be able to give that same experience to as many people as possible…"
"Are you not sure if Takakura-san can pull it off?" Makoto asked.
"I don't think so. Not from the low-cost chain that Takakura-san was suggesting." Haru answered. "It just wouldn't be the same."
"Well, it's like I said. You should talk to him and tell him that." Makoto advised.
"Huh…?" Haru gasped. "But it's just as I said before. I'm just a high schooler with no experience in this sort of thing. Would he really listen to me?"
"Well, it's worth a shot." Makoto figured. "Have you been experimenting with the coffee beans here?"
"Ren mentioned that it would be ok, but I've still only used a few." Haru frowned. "Still, I don't know if my skills are quite there yet."
"Haru, you'll have to say something eventually." Makoto pointed out.
"I know, I know. I've been so afraid of him all this time…"
Haru took a deep breath.
But all I need to do is to show him how I feel! I'll make him see what I'm really thinking… and what's truly important to me." Haru finished.
"That's the spirit, Haru!" Makoto grinned.
"I've been very distrusting of Takakura-san." Haru admitted. "I at least should talk to him, otherwise he'll have no reason to consider what I'm saying."
She could sense a strong resolve coming from Haru.
EMPRESS CONFIDANT: RANK 7
"I still don't think my skills are quite there yet, but practice makes perfect!" Haru declared. "So I'll just keep practicing until I feel like it's good enough to communicate how I feel."
"If you ever need help, I'm here for you." Makoto told her.
"Thank you, Mako-chan!" Haru smiled.
After they finished their meals, Haru left Leblanc.
Shortly afterwards, she saw Ren, Futaba, and Morgana entering the cafe, Morgana having spent the last few nights at Futaba's.
"Hey Makoto…" Futaba greeted. "How are you feeling?"
"A lot better." Makoto told her. "I should be at 100% soon."
"That's good." Futaba nodded. "I was a little worried when you didn't show up at the Diet Building like the rest of us."
"I just need to lay low for a while." Makoto assured her. "So what were you two doing?"
"We weren't able to make any progress yesterday, but thought maybe if we watched the news it might give us some ideas." Ren said.
"But it's been soooooooo boring." Futaba groaned.
Shido, Shido, Shido… it was as if that was the only thing they could talk about on the news.
And yet, despite that, it seemed like they were still having trouble.
When she glanced towards the T.V, she immediately saw footage of Shido giving a speech.
"Those criminals calling themselves the Phantom Thieves are no more". Shido began. "However, I believe that this country's citizens are still living their days in anxiety. These scandals only increase our distrust of the current government. As a citizen myself, I am enraged!"
Seeing him lie to the public as easily as he breathed was beginning to enrage her!
Prime Minister or not, she had to stop him!
"What does it mean to be a politician with responsibility?" Shido asked. "Working toward personal gain without consideration of the country is outrageous!"
"The election's public notification is tomorrow, but no matter where I go, people are cheering for Shido." Sojiro told them.
"They're all being deceived so easily." Futaba muttered.
"They don't know the truth. We can't blame them." Ren gently told her.
"In order to save this country that has been tainted with corruption, reform is essential!" Shido continued.
"Ugh…" Futaba grumbled.
After discussing things for a little longer, Sojiro and Futaba left for home. A part of her did really want to stay at Leblanc, but she would probably be ever so slightly safer at Sojiro's home.
When she arrived, she noticed that Sojiro had already laid out some blankets on his couch. She really was thankful for all the man had done for her over the year.
As she laid down on the couch, she realized that with everything else going on at the time, she hadn't really checked her own phone for the past few days.
She saw that she had several messages from others, asking if she was doing ok.
Eiko, Takayo, and many others sent messages wondering if she was ok.
She felt a little guilty for leaving them hanging for so long, so she quickly replied to all of them, assuring them that she was ok before heading back to bed.
11/23 Saturday
The others quickly made their way over to Leblanc for a meeting. Even Sae had arrived to discuss the last keyword that Shido might have.
But unfortunately, no matter how many guesses they gave, they just couldn't think of what Shido's final keyword could be.
"Perhaps he really does have a barrier up." Yusuke frowned.
"Exactly! I knew it!" Ryuji grinned.
"Don't get excited about that!" Ann snapped. "If you are right, then that would be a ton more work for us!"
"You're stuck on this last 'keyword', are you?" Sae noticed.
"Yes, we have to enter it into the Navigator and just look for a match." Haru explained.
"We could… you know, just try entering every word in the dictionary?" Ren suggested.
"That would take foreveeeeeeer!" Futaba groaned.
"Hey Boss, can you turn the T.V on?" Ryuji asked. "Shido could be on."
"Sure thing." Sojiro nodded.
He turned the T.V on, but the person on T.V wasn't Shido, but Akechi doing an interview.
He continued to go on and on about his plan, and how he was one supposedly step ahead of them at every turn, the audience hanging onto every word.
The interview did little except make them all even more frustrated.
"Damn it! They're acting so smug, even though they're the ones behind this mess!" Ryuji snapped.
"He must be working with Shido, but I doubt he'd say anything relating to him." Yusuke pointed out.
"Well… can't we just go try and see Shido ourselves?" Futaba asked.
"I don't think that would be possible." Haru sighed. "He has guards around him at all times."
"It's not like we could interview him or anything." Ann frowned.
"Say, Makoto's sister, do you think you might be able to get in touch with him?" Ryuji asked. "Or maybe with Akechi."
She could see her sister's eye twitch from being referred to as 'Makoto's sister' instead of her name, but she thankfully didn't comment on that.
"There's no possible way they'd let me near Shido. I could possibly get info from Akechi, but not Shido." Sae answered.
Suddenly, a loud, booming voice startled them all from their thoughts.
"To everyone gathered before Yongen-Jaya Station!"
"What was that?!" Ryuji asked.
"Probably some politician campaigning around here." Sojiro told them.
"Wait a second!" Ren realized. "That voice… doesn't it sound familiar to you guys?"
It took her a moment, but she quickly understood what Ren meant.
"That's-
"I apologize for the commotion! I am Masayoshi Shido!"
"Wait, 'Shido'?!" Ryuji gasped. "That's our guy!"
"Good thing you remembered, Ren!" Ann praised.
"Yeah…" Ren trailed off.
There seemed to be something off about him…
"Come everyone, let's go!" Ryuji yelled.
"I'm going too!" Makoto exclaimed.
"Absolutely not!" Sae protested. "It would be far too dangerous!"
"He doesn't recognize who I am!" Makoto pointed out. "He wouldn't know my face!"
"Makoto…" Ren trailed off.
"Ren, don't try and stop me." Makoto said. "You would be trying to do the same thing if you were in my shoes."
"I probably would." Ren admitted. "But you're supposed to be the smarter one!"
"Really, Ren…?" Makoto deadpanned.
"Listen, I'll call you when I get there and put my phone on speaker. That way you can let Boss and your sister listen to what's happening too." Ren suggested. "And besides, a larger group would just attract attention."
"... Alright." Makoto relented.
Admittedly, this was probably for the best. She wasn't sure what she would do if she saw him, to be honest. Would she be able to resist the urge to just charge at him?
Even if her model gun that she brought to the Metaverse was actually real, what could she do?
Shooting him? A massive public figure whose power put him on the level of prime minister? In broad daylight?
That would just be absurd. There's no way anything like that would ever happen in Japan…
As Ren ran down to the station with the others, one thing ran through his mind.
Could Shido really be the one who…
"Hey, Ren, are you feelin' ok?" Ryuji asked.
"... I'm fine." Ren lied. "I just… make sure you're careful, ok? Even on the chance that he doesn't recognize us, we shouldn't cause a scene."
"... Now is the time to rebuild this crumbling nation!" Shido continued. "Our government is littered with scandals, and criminals have taken a strong foothold in our society!"
Every syllable out of his mouth reeked of hypocrisy. He could feel his body tensing up.
But was it because of his speech? Or something else…?
"Such a disgraceful past must be discarded… We must set sail into a new future of dreams and hope!" Shido shouted.
Along the way, he saw many different people shocked to see Shido campaigning nearby, and all of them eagerly started making their way over.
So our children who carry the burden of the next generation can be proud of their country!" Shido spoke. "So that our nation can once again become a powerful one with abundant wealth and luxury! So our beautiful home will be acknowledged as the best country in the world!"
He could hear the cheers from the crowd as he finally made his way over to the campaign car, and Shido himself.
"I humbly ask that you cast your vote for me, Masayoshi Shido!" Shido concluded. "Let us all set sail towards a happy future together! I hope to continue serving you all!"
The speech ended just as they arrived, Shido heading off the podium and back to his car.
"I'll try and get some more info outta him!" Ryuji told them.
Ryuji ran over to the car, hoping to catch Shido before he left.
"Heeey, Yo! Shido-san!" Ryuji called.
"Stand back!" Shido's bodyguard warned.
"I just wanna talk to him for a sec!" Ryuji argued.
"He's a very busy man!" the bodyguard replied.
"The hell?!" Ryuji snapped. "Ain't he supposed to hear a-oof."
Ren lightly shoved Ryuji, giving him the hint to let him handle this.
"I'm really sorry about that." Ren apologized. "If talking is too much time, then would he have enough time for a handshake?"
"... Aren't you a little young to be at a campaign rally, kid?" Shido said, finally acknowledging them.
"Well, I was kinda curious what the commotion was, and I was surprised to see you here!" Ren said. "Even people from my school are talking about you, and how you'll be the next prime minister. I figure that it would be pretty cool to say that I shook hands with you!"
"Well, alright then." Shido said.
Thankfully, it seemed like Shido wasn't immune to flattery.
Shido shook his hand, having a surprisingly strong grip. Most people around here preferred a softer handshake, but Shido's seemed to excuse power and dominance…
But perhaps the most shocking thing… was that at that moment, he knew.
He knew that Shido was the one who had framed him that day.
"For real?! Shido was the one who set you up?!" Ann gasped.
Ren had told everyone what he had learned.
"The moment I saw what he looked like, and saw him talking… I knew. It was definitely him." Ren answered.
"What kind of fate could have brought you two back together?" Yusuke questioned.
"I'm not sure… but I'm not going to pass up the opportunity on a little payback… and to stop him from trying to ruin other people's lives too." Ren stated.
"No matter where that man goes, he seems to always want to flaunt his power over others." Sae frowned.
"And with the power of the Metaverse, he basically has all the power in the world." Makoto frowned.
"Yeah, from what I remember, he was always the type to carry a grudge against anyone who went against him, no matter how trivial." Sojiro frowned.
"What a piece of shit!" Ryuji snapped.
"But now that we found out who was really responsible, couldn't we get Shido to admit to falsifying charges?" Haru asked.
"Once the courts have made a decision, they really don't like having to reverse it." Sae pointed out. "Even if Shido admitted to his crimes and proof of innocence was presented, it would be difficult."
"But why is that?" Makoto asked.
"Well, prosecutors tend to only accept cases that have very high chances of success." Sae explained. "Combined with that, having to overturn a decision reflects badly on the courts, as they didn't make the correct decision initially."
That was frustrating. As important as people believing in the justice system was, sweeping incorrect solutions under the rug didn't seem like the right solution.
"I still can't believe how he can lie to people so easily." Haru frowned.
"There was a lot to focus on in that last speech." Makoto commented. "Let's all take some time to think about everything he said and try to think of what the keyword could be."
Everyone agreed, talking for a little longer before most of them left for the day.
She could only hope that one of them would discover that last keyword… and soon!
