Chapter 1
The state of Kansas is approximately in the middle of the United States and would give anyone easy access to just about anywhere in the country. In between the cities of Junction City and Topeka, in the county of Wabaunsee, is a hundred and fifty-acre tract of land where the Winchester Search and Rescue Team makes its home. It was in the V of Interstate 70 and Interstate 335, giving the company quick access to some of the main arteries across the nation.
John Winchester, the patriarch of the family, started the family business after his second tour in the Marines and he mustered out receiving an honorable discharge. He was born and had lived in Lawrence, Kansas, before joining the Marines right out of high school. He had been saving every penny he could to put toward the price of the land.
After he returned home, John met and fell in love with Mary Campbell, who was also born and raised in Lawrence also. They were married within the year and rented a small house in Lawrence until they had the money saved to start building on the site he had purchased. He had lucked out and got the land at a good price and with Mary's financial help they were able to pay cash for it. John had big plans to create the search and rescue facility that would be home to the business, equipment, their main office, cabins for other team members and a home for his boys.
Until the program was up and running, John worked as a mechanic at one of the larger garages in Lawrence and took college classes at night to prepare himself for his career change. Two years into their marriage their first son was born, whom they named after Mary's mother, Deanna, calling him Dean. Four years passed and their second son was born, whom they named after Mary's father, Samuel, calling him by the same name, but shortened it to Sammy or Sam.
Dean and Sam were intelligent, hardworking, loyal brothers, who did well in school. Both worked hard to graduate early because they wanted to join their father in his search and rescue business. They enjoyed the outdoors and went camping and hiking together when the weather was good. Both worked part-time all through high school and saved their money to help with the family business.
As the boys grew, John began teaching them about search and rescue and trained them to take care of themselves. He drilled them in hand-to-hand combat, firearms, knives, and street fighting. He wanted to make sure they would be able to protect themselves and each other. He enrolled them in courses to hone their skills and made sure they knew first aid, CPR, and basic medical training.
Dean was a natural in search and rescue, like it was in his blood, while Sammy, Sam, was more the planner and researcher. The brothers were very close growing up and stayed that way. Dean was always the protector of his little brother and wouldn't let him put himself in harm's way if he could do it himself. They were dedicated and trained hard to join their father in the family business.

The business finally became a reality and Winchester Search and Rescue was born. John and Mary lived in a large ranch style home nestled toward the back and on one side of the property. Their sons lived in a two-bedroom house nearby and were part of the Winchester team. Dean was the muscle and a skilled climber, and Sam was the researcher and planner. Mary insisted that her sons eat dinner with them at least two to three times a week and sent plenty of leftovers home with them.
The last of the Winchester family were two German shepherd dogs, that were brothers. They were highly trained search and rescue dogs named Fred and Barney. They were adopted as pups and trained by the best. The dogs attached themselves to the brothers and were their shadows. Wherever they went, the dogs were not far away. All four worked together like a well oiled machine.
Bobby Singer joined the team as the mechanic who took care of all their equipment and vehicles, making sure everything was in working order. He lived in a large one-bedroom apartment above the main garage. He had made John's acquaintance when working together at the garage in Lawrence. John had seen how knowledgeable and experienced he was and lured him away to work for him.
There were several buildings that housed their vehicles and equipment used in their business. They had a separate building that they used for training sessions and to plan their operations. It also housed a gym for the team to use to keep fit and a laundry facility for team members to use. All the team kept up to date on certifications, training, and new procedures in the business.
Asa Fox learned of the team and put in an application to be hired. He was the team's medical person and an experienced outdoorsman. He had been in the Army where he got his medical training and used it when he got out to work as an EMT until he saw the notice for the search and rescue openings. Asa lived for the outdoors. He hiked, free climbed, rappelled, spelunking, and camped. He was an easygoing, slow to anger, team player and fit right in with the others team members.
The last person to complete the team was Charlie Bradbury, the only female, besides Mary on the team. She was a small, red head, who was so energetic that she kept everyone else hopping. She was also a computer nerd and helped keep all their computer system up to date and running smoothly. She also kept a web page about the company updated. Charlie could find blueprints, maps, and graphs for just about any area or structure. She helped Mary apply for grants to help fund their business.
John had small cabins built in one corner of the property for team members to live in so they would be available when a call came in for their help. The cabins were furnished with basic furniture and left room for each person to add their own personal touches. Besides working with Search and Rescue, Asa worked part time with the county's EMT program and Charlie worked part time from home for a gaming company. Both were always prepared to head out with the team when called upon.
Winchester Search and Rescue had built a reputation over the past several years as the number one team to bring in when disasters struck, or people were lost. Word spread quickly about this company and the results they achieved. John tried to keep a low profile and didn't do interviews, nor did any of his team. But there were stories about their rescues on national television stations and newspapers that spread their fame.
They also had a network of contacts across the country in law enforcement and other search and rescue teams. Each team member meshed into one powerful unit when they were on a job and worked flawlessly together. They were a mismatched family and supported each other through the good and the bad times.
None of the team members balked at any job they went on and gave it one hundred and ten percent to get the job done. Many people owed their lives to this tight knit team of fearless and dedicated search and rescue workers, including their search and rescue dogs.
