On what many believed to be the last night in the life of William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid, started out quiet. Billy was sitting at the dining room table with his good friend Billy Barlow. Their host, a cobbler by the name of Jesús Silva, was getting the stove warmed as his daughter Selena, was cutting up vegetables for their dinner. The kid had befriended Silva and his daughter after he had rescued them from a racist ranch hand who tried to rape Selena. Billy and his partner had been lying low at their home while the law was on the hunt for them. Ever since he'd killed Sheriff Brady in what folks were calling the Lincoln County War, every sheriff, deputy, and US Marshal was gunning for him. Selena had found a wanted poster in town when she'd gone out to buy groceries for the outlaws. The governor had put a price of five hundred dollars on Billy's head. Senor Silva had told him that in Mexico, that was equal to well over nine thousand pesos. Billy couldn't help but be impressed by the price he'd fetched.
When he'd been imprisoned in Mesilla, a reported from the Las Vegas Gazette had done a story on him and Billy had told him everything about his brief life and according to the Silvas and Barlow from when they went out, it felt as though the entire US of A knew who Billy the Kid was. Billy had never wanted to be a famous outlaw. All he'd ever wanted was a good life for himself and his family. The law had made him what he was; by what they'd done and what they had allowed to be done to him.
"You ok, Billy?" Selena asked as she poured a shot of tequila for him and Billy Barlow.
"Just thinking about my life, that's all." Billy replied as he downed the liquor and thought about the people he'd lost: his pa, his ma, Carlos, Dulcinea, the list just went on.
"Es una vida dura la que has elegido" (It's a rough life you've chosen). Selena said in Spanish as she rubbed his shoulder in sympathy.
"Yo no elegí esta vida, ella me eligió a mí." (I didn't choose this life, it chose me). Billy replied in fluent Spanish that he'd picked up from his Mexican friends over the years.
"It's quiet tonight, Billy." Billow Barlow said as he sipped his drink.
"Yeah...too quiet if you ask me." The kid replied with a steel glare.
"If you boys wanna get some carne, I cook it for you." Jesús said as he pointed to the smokehouse out back. Billy didn't feel like being outside at night with lawmen sniffing for him, but as he learned, there was nothing to be done about that now.
"Billy the Kid, your final moon has dawned!" the voice of Sheriff Pat Garrett boomed from outside. "Save your friends, surrender yourself!"
"Shit...how they find us?" Billy Barlow asked as the hairs on everyone's neck stood straight up.
"You hear me? Your time has come boy!" the sheriff exclaimed again. "We got this Mexican shit hole surrounded, Kid; might as well come on out. Do it now, and we spare your dirty brown friends!"
"Métete debajo de la mesa, rápido!" (Get under the table, quickly) Senor Silva commanded as everyone got down on their knees to avoid being spotted while he got out a coach double barreled shotgun.
"Billy the Kid, come on out and face justice, or else I'll burn you out with the poor man's grenade!" Pat threatened as Billy knew first hand the damage that a Molotov cocktail could do.
"Someone must've sold us out." Billy whispered as he inwardly cursed whoever had led Garrett to the Silva's doorstep.
"You want your bean eaters consumed in fire?" the sheriff asked in a taunting voice. "Their bodies a-hissing and a-steaming? Billy!"
Go out back, run for the cacti!" Senor Silva commanded the 2 Billys, hoping to defuse the situation.
"I got to go out there. If I can talk Pat Garrett into a draw, maybe the others will tuck tail." Billy offered as Selena shook her head ferociously.
"Billy, he'll shoot you down like a perro rabioso." the senorita pleaded as she began to weep. "I'm begging you, slip out the back while you can. If they know you're gone, they'll leave us be."
"I'll stay back, buy you some time." Billy Barlow said as the Kid touched Selena's cheek with tenderness before racing out the back door and taking cover near a patch of cacti.
The Kid is not here! He go to Santa Fe!" Jesús bellowed to the sheriff and his posse.
"I said for him to come out!" Pat demanded again.
"Billy es no here! Ain't nobody here but me, mi padre, and Senor Barlow!" Selena cried out as she held onto her father.
"Billy, we're all waiting for you!" Garrett taunted further as Billy Barlow lost his temper.
?He's not here, you rat bastard!" Barlow exclaimed as he raced out of the cabin, 6 shooter drawn. He only made it a few steps before the posse gunned him down with a hail of bullets.
Que se jodan, gringos!" (Fuck you, Gringos) Senor Silva shouted as he rushed out the door and let off 2 rounds quickly. One of the posse got shot, but they soon returned fire and Jesús Silva was torn apart by rifle rounds.
"PAPA!" Selena screamed in agony as she ran out the door to her fallen father.
Billy crouched down by the cacti as he listened to his friends get shot to pieces by Sheriff Garrett and his posse. He prayed that Selena would stay in the cabin, but he heard her cry of pain, followed by a gunshot.
"Damn it, why'd you kill the bitch, I wanted to sample some of that Mexican cuisine." one of the posse laughed out loud.
"Selena...Damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it!" Billy growled as he felt tears roll down his cheeks as he pounded his fists into the dirt. 3 more people that he cared about were dead and it was all his fault.
"They was right sheriff...the Kid ain't here." Billy heard a deputy call out as sounds of rummaging were heard inside the cabin.
"We got one dead Billy...most people don't know what the Kid looks like for sure, we can still get that bounty." Pat Garrett reasoned as Billy took off through the wilderness. He couldn't hear anymore about Garrett was going to stick Billy Barlow in his coffin and pass him off as himself for the bounty. Billy had lost everything and as he turned around to see the Silva cabin ablaze, he had no idea how he would survive as a dead man walking.
