Skye was sitting in the window seat of her room. She had recently decided to get a social media account. She was scrolling through her Instagram, checking out what her friends had posted, liking posts, and leaving comments on pictures.
Wanda knocked on her open bedroom door, causing Skye to look up.
"Hey, Wanda, what's up?" Skye asked.
"Well, we were supposed to start training about ten minutes ago," Wanda said.
Skye looked at the time. "Crap, sorry. I will be down in five minutes." She got up and dug into her dresser drawer to pull out some leggings.
Wanda nodded and left the room, closing the door behind her and going into the kitchen to wait for her.
Tony was in the kitchen filling up his third coffee of the day.
"Wanda, you look like you're getting ready for training," Tony said.
"Yes, regular Saturday training with Skye," Wanda said.
Tony nodded. "How is she coming along? I heard you put in a good word for her with Cap."
"Some days she does better than others. This week she has been distracted by something," Wanda said. "She was supposed to meet me in the training room ten minutes ago. I had to come and get her."
Tony nodded and took a sip of his coffee. "Do you think she is slacking because Steve has been away?"
"I don't know, possibly. I will try talking to her about it," Wanda said. Steve and Bucky had been called away for Captain America and Winter Soldier business. They had been away for the last week and weren't going to be back for a few more days still.
Skye came out of her bedroom and into the kitchen, ready for training.
"Just because your dad is away doesn't mean you get to slack with what you're supposed to be doing," Tony said.
Skye let out a breath. "I'm not trying to slack. I lost track of time."
Tony nodded. "Okay."
Wanda and Skye went down to the training room.
Skye came back up a couple of hours later. She was wiped. Wanda had tried talking to her. But she only got a snarky response from the teenager. So she had gone harder on her, and Skye knew it was because she was trying to teach her a lesson. She limped through the kitchen where Pepper was.
"You okay?" Pepper asked.
"Yes, just sore from training," Skye said.
Pepper nodded.
Skye went into her bathroom, stripped off her sweat-covered clothes, and stepped into a hot shower to soak her sore muscles.
Wanda came through the kitchen as well.
"Skye was limping," Pepper said.
"Yup, she's not injured, just sore," Wanda said.
"I don't think I have ever seen her limping from training," Pepper said.
Wanda shrugged. "I'm upping the intensity. She wants to be able to fight. She needs to be prepared, and, maybe, I added a little more today to prove a point."
Pepper tilted her head.
"She has been distracted all week. She didn't meet me downstairs when she was supposed to today. I had to come and get her. When I tried to talk to her about it she was snarky," Wanda said.
"Ah," Pepper said.
"She might think she can get away with things because Steve isn't here. I just wanted her to realize she can't," Wanda said.
Pepper nodded, "fair enough."
"I will double-check later that she isn't seriously hurt," Wanda said.
An hour later there was a knock on Skye's bedroom door.
"Come in," Skye called out. She was laying on her bed.
Wanda went in. "I just want to ensure you're sore and not hurt."
"I'm fine," Skye said.
"Okay," Wanda said.
Skye mumbled something.
"What was that?" Wanda asked.
"Nothing," Skye said.
"You mumbled something," Wanda said.
"Nope," Skye said, popping the p.
Wanda took a breath. "Yes, you did. And if you have something to say to me, just say it. I want to hear."
Skye said nothing.
"I know I went hard on you today. Do you understand why?" Wanda asked.
"You didn't just go harder on me. You were mean," Skye said.
"You have been distracted every day this week with training, and disrespectful when I tried to get you to talk to me about it. I was trying to get your focus back," Wanda said.
"You were trying to teach me a lesson. I get it. Lesson learned," Skye said.
"And what exactly do you think that lesson is?" Wanda asked.
"That I can't have an off week without you pushing me harder than normal," Skye said.
"Skye, this wasn't just you having an off week, and you know it," Wanda said. "And if you ever want to be able to join the Avengers you are going to need to be trained harder. That's just a fact."
"Today wasn't just you going harder to make me stronger and you know it," Skye said.
"You're right. I was trying to teach you a lesson. Would you have rather I yelled at you for the distractions and disrespect?" Wanda asked.
"No, because as I have said it wasn't distractions. It was an off week, and I tried to tell you that. You didn't listen. That's why I had to say what I said that you seem to think was disrespectful," Skye said.
"Okay, is there something that made you have an off week?" Wanda asked.
"Why would I tell you when you were just a complete jerk?" Skye asked.
"I'm sorry you feel like I was being a jerk. But, you know if you are not up to training for any reason all you have to do is tell me, and we can take a few days off," Wanda said.
"Whatever," Skye said.
Wanda took a breath. "When you are ready to talk about this we can," she said as she left the room and closed the door behind her. She went into the kitchen and started to chop the vegetables that were on the counter.
Bruce was the one in the kitchen that evening making dinner.
"Wanda, are you okay?" he asked.
"Skye's angry with me," Wanda said.
"Oh?" Bruce asked.
"I pushed her hard today in training to teach her a lesson about letting herself be distracted and being disrespectful. She got the point and is sore, and she doesn't like that I did what I did to prove my point," Wanda said.
"Ah, so you disciplined her, and she doesn't like it. She's not supposed to like it. That would defeat the purpose," Bruce said.
"I know. I know I didn't do anything wrong. But she is angry at me, and I don't like it," Wanda said.
"She will get over it," Bruce said.
Wanda nodded.
The two of them made dinner, and everyone was called.
Skye came out limping and sat down.
"Are you all right?" Nat asked.
"I'm fine," Skye said.
"You're limping," Nat said.
"Yeah, and it's Wanda's fault," Skye mumbled.
"You're sore from training with Wanda. That doesn't make it her fault," Bruce said.
Skye got up from the table and limped back to her room and slammed the door.
Wanda sighed as all eyes were on her for an explanation.
Wanda explained what had happened again to those who didn't know.
"Do you want me to talk to her?" Tony asked.
"No, this is between her and me," Wanda said.
"Are you sure?" Tony asked.
"I'm sure. If I can't work it out with her, then I probably shouldn't be the one training her," Wanda said.
Dinner was finished, and Wanda knocked on Skye's bedroom door.
"Go away," Skye said.
"Skye, come on let's talk about this," Wanda said.
"No," Skye said.
"When you are ready to talk come find me," Wanda said before walking away from her door.
"You sure you don't want me to say something?" Tony asked when Wanda came into the living room. It was clear on Wanda's face that nothing had changed.
"I just don't know what you could say to her that I haven't tried," Wanda said.
"Sometimes it's not about what you say to teenagers, but about the looks you give," Tony said.
Wanda smiled a little.
Tony got up from the couch and went to knock on Skye's door.
"I don't want to talk," Skye said.
"Well, you don't have to. You just need to listen," Tony said.
Skye sighed. "Fine, whatever."
Tony went into her room and crossed his arms over his chest.
Skye was sitting on her bed. She crossed her arms right back and narrowed her eyes at him
"Drop the attitude, kid," Tony said sternly.
Skye let out a breath and looked down.
"Look, I don't know what's going on with you, and I don't expect you to tell me. But, no matter what it is, you don't get to be disrespectful to Wanda or any other adult for that matter," Tony said.
"She's the one who pushed me so hard. I'm hurt, and it was more than just pushing me harder to make me stronger. She even admitted that," Skye said.
"And before that, did she not try talking to you about it?" Tony asked.
Skye didn't say anything.
"Skyler, I asked you a question," Tony said, his voice hard.
"Fine, yes, she did," Skye said.
"So instead of answering her, you got snarky?" Tony asked.
"I didn't, and I don't want to talk about it," Skye said.
"Okay, that's fine. You couldn't have just told her that and just focused on the training?" Tony asked.
"I tried. I'm sorry if I'm not up to my normal level for one week," Skye said.
Tony let out a breath. "Did you tell this to Wanda?"
"Yes," Skye said.
"Before training today?" Tony asked.
Skye sighed and shook her head.
"Just because Wanda can read minds doesn't mean she does it anytime she wants to. You can't expect her to know what you're thinking or feeling without telling her," Tony said.
Skye nodded a little.
"So, are you going to change your attitude and apologize to Wanda?" Tony asked.
"Yes," Skye said softly.
Tony left the room and went to find Wanda. "I think she is ready to talk to you."
Wanda got up and went to knock on Skye's opened door.
"Come in," Skye said softly.
Wanda went in and closed the door behind her. She sat on Skye's bed.
"I'm sorry," Skye said.
Wanda nodded.
"I'm having a bad week, and you got the brunt of it," Skye said.
"You want to tell me what is going on?" Wanda asked.
"My friend Kate and I have always had some sort of contact, even if it was just a text once a week or something. She came bowling for my birthday. But she had to work after and couldn't come here. She was acting a little off. And you know I had her here a couple of weeks after, and we hung out. but, again, she seemed off. Since then I have gotten one text from her, and it was after I texted her this week asking her if she was still alive. She texted me that she was alive but busy and that I was annoying her. She has never called me annoying, even when I know I was annoying her. I didn't think I was doing anything annoying in texting her once a week. I get a bad feeling something is really wrong," Skye said.
Wanda nodded. "Sometimes people change as they become adults."
"Okay, but not like this, Wanda. I know my friend, and something is wrong," Skye said.
"Okay, I believe you. But what can we do? If she asks for help, then maybe we can do something. But if she doesn't, there is nothing we can do," Wanda said.
"Well, I was thinking… If I can convince her to come here, maybe you can use your mind-reading thing and see what she's thinking," Skye said.
"Not happening, I will not use my abilities on someone you call a friend," Wanda said.
Skye sighed.
"But you can always have her here and try talking to her, tell her about your worry," Wanda said.
Skye shrugged., "Maybe."
"And didn't you tell me she is working three jobs to make ends meet?" Wanda asked.
"Yes," Skye said.
"So that means she probably is busy. Maybe she was having a bad day and took out her frustrations on you," Wanda said.
Skye sighed. "Like I have on you."
Wanda nodded.
"I'm really sorry," Skye said.
"It's forgiven," Wanda said. "Now how are you feeling? In pain?"
"No, I'm a little sore but not really in pain," Skye said.
"You did not eat dinner, and I don't think that is very good for your blood sugar levels," Wanda said.
Skye nodded.
"Okay, come and eat," Wanda said.
Skye got up. She and Wanda went to the kitchen, where Skye's plate had been put in the fridge. Skye got it out and warmed it up before sitting down to eat.
Wanda sat with her drinking a cup of tea while the teenager ate.
