Happy readings

It had been a few weeks since everything had happened, and Skye had finally been given the all-clear to start training again. Steve had also spoken to her about having her DNA tested, and she was completely on board and ready for it. She was in Bruce's lab having blood and saliva taken to test for various things.
"Make sure you let me know if you start to feel dizzy or anything feels off," Bruce told her.
"Okay," Skye said.
"Do you have anything exciting planned for the rest of the summer?" Bruce asked.
"Going to the beach with my friends in a few days, trying to convince my dad to let me go visit the Barton's for a week or two," Skye said.
Bruce smiled. "How is the convincing going?"
Skye looked up at her dad, who was sitting in the room with them. "Dad? How is it going?"
"I still need to talk to Clint and Laura and make sure it's okay and that they don't have anything going on," Steve said.
"You don't think Lila asked them before she invited me?" Skye asked.
Steve smiled. "I'm sure it was discussed. I will talk to Clint when he comes for the team meeting in a couple of days and figure out if it will work."
Skye smiled. "Okay."
"How is the reading coming?" Steve asked.
"Oh, I'm completely done with the six books," Skye said.
"And did it make you enjoy reading any more than before?" Bruce asked.
"Nope," Skye said.
Bruce finished getting what he needed from Skye before telling her she could go.
"Am I going to be told what is found?" Skye asked, looking between Bruce and her dad.
"Yes," Steve said.
Skye smiled. "Okay, thank you.," she said as she left the room.
Bruce started to put things into their correct machines. "It probably will take me a couple of days to get results and look through and compare them to yours," he told Steve.
"Okay, I figured as much," Steve said.
"I will let you know when I have it all ready," Bruce said.
Steve nodded before leaving the room as well and going upstairs.
Skye was at the beach with her friends a couple of days later, and Bruce went to Steve.
"I have the results," Bruce said his face and voice telling Steve that something was wrong.
Steve nodded slowly, and the two went to the office and closed the door.
"How much did you actually know about her mother?" Bruce asked.
"We weren't together very long, so probably not as well as I could have. Why?" Steve asked.
"Well, there is something in her DNA that I have never seen before. Her DNA is comprised of half of you, as we expected, but there is something else there. The DNA which must have come from her mother isn't what you would expect from a regular individual, meaning her mother must have been a super individual in one way or another. But, it's not something I have seen before," Bruce said.
"But no super ability has come up that isn't from me," Steve said.
"I know. It could be dormant currently. Maybe it's not very strong in her, so whatever it is she just shrugs off as nothing," Bruce said.
Steve nodded.
"Did you know her mother's family at all?" Bruce asked.
"No, as far as I knew, she was an only child, and her parents are both deceased. She never mentioned any other family," Steve said.
"Okay," Bruce said.
"And you can't tell from the DNA what the abilities could be?" Steve asked.
"All I can say is it's nothing I have ever come across before," Bruce said.
Steve nodded.
"I can do more testing, but I will need more blood from her," Bruce said.
"Okay," Steve said. "When she comes home from the beach we can talk to her and see what she wants to do."
Bruce nodded. "And I'm going to need her mother's name so I see if I can find any information about her."
Steve told him her name.
"Whatever it is, I'm sure we will be able to help her," Bruce said.
"I know," Steve said. "I'm just annoyed that this is just another thing I didn't know. Her mother knew who I was, and if she didn't tell me about having superhuman or enhanced abilities there was a reason. I don't like the possible reasons that are going through my head."
Bruce let out a breath. "Yeah, my thoughts go there too. But Skye is a good kid, whatever it is. She will be okay."
Steve nodded. " Can we keep this between us for now?"
Bruce nodded slowly.
"Just until I have a chance to talk to Skye about it," Steve said.
"Okay," Bruce said.
A few hours later Skye came into the compound and into the kitchen.
"Hey," she said to Nat, who was in the kitchen.
"Hey," Nat said with a smile. "You had fun with your friends?"
"Lots of fun," Skye said with a smile.
"Did you forget sunscreen?" Nat asked.
"No, I put some on before I left," Skye said.
"Did you reapply at all?" Nat asked.
"Um…no," Skye said.
"I can tell., You are burnt," Nat said.
"Is it that bad?" Skye asked.
"Yeah, does it hurt?" Nat asked.
"No," Skye said.
"Well, it might later. I've got some aloe cream that you can use if you want," Nat said.
Skye shrugged.
"Only if you want, but it will help," Nat said.
"Okay," Skye said. "I'm okay right now. I'm going to go shower."
Nat nodded, and Skye went to shower. When she came out, she went back into the kitchen where Steve was now sitting with Nat.
"Hey, Dad," Skye said.
Steve let out a breath when he saw how burnt her shoulders were. "Skye, I told you to reapply sunscreen throughout the day."
"I forgot," Skye said softly.
"I can get the aloe," Nat said, getting up. Skye sat in her place.
"Did you have fun at least?" Steve asked.
"Lots of fun," Skye said.
"Good," Steve said.
Nat came back into the kitchen. "I can apply it for you if you want."
"Please," Skye said moving her hair out of the way.
"Your friends as burnt as you?" Steve asked.
"I dunno," Skye said. "I didn't think I was burnt."
Steve shook his head.
"I will reapply better next time," she said.
"I think this is the best way to teach teenagers to use sunscreen, self-realization of what happens when you don't," Nat said.
Steve nodded, "I don't disagree, but that doesn't mean she hasn't done permanent damage to her skin."
"Dad, I'm okay. It barely hurts," Skye said.
Steve nodded. "Okay."
Nat finished with the aloe and went to put it away.
"Bruce has finished up his initial look into your DNA," Steve said.
Skye looked up from her phone. "Is something wrong?"
"Wrong, no. But he found something interesting," Steve said.
"Okay, what?" Skye asked.
"Dr. Banner has found that more than half your DNA has enhanced features," Steve said.
"What does that mean? Does the DNA I get from you overpower my mothers or something?" Skye asked.
"No, it means that the DNA that came from your mother was enhanced somehow, too," Steve said.
"I don't understand. I thought you said she wasn't superhuman or anything," Skye said.
"Well, she never told me she was. I assumed she wasn't. She knew who I was, and I assumed she would have told me if she was enhanced, too," Steve said.
"Well, shouldn't I have more abilities than I do then?" Skye asked.
"There could be a lot of reasons why you don't. Whatever it is could be dormant or not strong enough to be noticeable," Steve said.
"Well, what other abilities should I have?" Skye asked.
"We don't know. Dr. Banner has never seen something like what is in you," Steve said.
"Why wouldn't my mother tell you if she had superhuman abilities or something?" Skye asked.
"I don't know. I wish I had more answers for you. I'd have a lot of questions for your mother, too, if she was still alive. But I think most of those questions are going to go unanswered," Steve said.
Skye nodded a little. "If Dr. Banner hasn't seen it before, could it be something… bad?" Skye asked.
"Superhuman abilities or powers aren't inherently good or bad. It's how you use them. Could your mother have been using them for bad? It's possible, but that doesn't mean whatever they are makes you bad or evil," Steve said.
Skye nodded.
"I don't want you to worry about it. I told you because I don't want you to be in the dark about these things. I want you to be as prepared as possible if something happens. No matter what, I know I have said it before, but I want you to feel safe coming to talk to me about anything, okay?" Steve said.
"I know, and I will," Skye said.
"Nothing has happened in the past that you can't explain?" Steve asked.
"Well, nothing that doesn't have an explanation. I couldn't explain how I threw someone off me that night in the alley, but I understand why now," Skye said. "And the hyper reflexes and other things that make sense because of what I got from you."
"Okay," Steve said.
Skye let out a breath.
"There is a team meeting tomorrow, and I will ask Clint about you going there for a few days," Steve said.
Skye smiled. "Okay, I'm excited."
"For the meeting or maybe going to visit Lila?" Steve asked with a smile.
"Both," Skye said.
Steve let out a soft chuckle. "Anything interesting happen at the beach?"
"Nothing crazy or unexpected," Skye said.
Steve nodded.
"But I'm going to lay down for a bit, I'm tired," Skye said.
"Okay, I'll call you for dinner," Steve said.
Skye went and fell asleep quickly.
