Prologue
Losing her footing, the young girl fell to the ground. She landed with a huff, tears pricking in sapphire eyes as she started to bleed on her scraped knee. She tried to hold them back, to no avail. She sat up on her knees as the tears fell. They cascaded down her plump cheeks, and she let out a sniffle as she lifted an arm to rub them away.
"I don't like this!" she wailed out loud, the noise catching the attention of all three teenagers there.
Kojiro sighed and looked at her before heading over to where she sat on the ground. He rested his arms on his knees as he looked at the young girl. "C'mon Kagome, chin up a bit. It's not that bad. You're gonna fall. It's just a part of learning...-"
His attempt at comforting his little sister fell flat when she shook her head with a sob, thin arms hiding her face. Her shoulder-length hair was tied back by a red ribbon to keep it from getting in her face. "No!" she argued indignantly. There was a snort of laughter from behind him, and Kojiro turned to glare at his pink-haired friend.
"Really, kudos to you," Kaoru remarked dryly. "You're a natural at this, aren't you?"
"Oh, why don't you shut up?" Kojiro grumbled before turning back to Kagome. Before he could say another word, the young girl had risen back to her feet. Her bloody knee needed to be bandaged at least. Her white sock had already gotten a red stain on it from the blood on her leg. He held his arms open for her to run into like always, but he was left with his arms wide open as she darted around him.
He turned, mouth agape in mild jealousy as she barreled towards the blue-haired teen with them. Unfazed by the glare directed at him, Adam chuckled, crouching to welcome her with open arms. He picked her up, tucking her head into his chest as Kojiro glared at him. Meanwhile, Kaoru erupted in laughs at his green-haired friend's misfortune.
"Looks like you're not her favorite after all," Kaoru forced out between his chuckles.
"Take that back!" Kojiro huffed, glaring at the pink-haired man. "Of course, I'm her favorite. I'm her big brother." He turned to look at Kagome, who had her face hidden in Adam's white jacket. "Right, Kagome?"
He was met with silence from the girl, and he sighed, shoulders slumping in defeat.
"She's just going through a phase," he said in defense of himself. It almost sounded like he was convincing himself of that.
Adam held her against his chest, one arm tucked under her bent legs to keep her upright while his other hand palmed at the back of her head. As the two argued, he pulled her back enough to catch her sapphire eyes with his ruby ones.
Her tears had stopped, but her eyes still shimmered from them. She just looked so cute and fragile like that, and it was endearing. The way she ran to him and clung to him. He chuckled, the noise rumbling deep in his chest.
"You just need a more practical way of learning," he mused softly to her. She tilted her head to the side, confused by what he meant.
"What's that mean?" she asked, confusion shining in her eyes. Her wide-eyed stare stole his heart. He leaned closer, brushing his nose against her own and making her giggle.
"You see, my dear sweet flower," Adam said as he set her back on her own feet. As he did, he coaxed her over to his own skateboard and encouraged her up on it. She did, her legs wobbling beneath her. He took her small hand in his own, letting her latch on as tight as she needed. Blunt nails dug into his hand, but the pain didn't phase him. If anything, it made him smile. "All you need is a little hands-on guidance," he explained in that same smooth voice he always used when speaking to her. It was like honey, dripping into her brain and making her feel happy. "Otherwise, you're just setting up to get your adorable little heart broken…"
She nodded, although there was no genuine sign that she actually processed what his words meant.
"I'd hate to see you so heart broken. So, why don't I teach you?" he hummed softly, offering the idea up for her to consider. "Hold onto my hand until you feel confident to soar on your own."
She nodded, hand gripping a bit tighter, and he smiled.
Getting ready for school in the morning, Kagome couldn't help but savor the simplicity of it. As she brushed her long, raven hair out, she eyed her reflection in the mirror. Blue eyes remained focused on the eyes reflection. A moment passed, and she lowered her arm to set her brush back down on the counter's surface. She smiled and stepped back, admiring herself some.
"It's great to be home!" she exclaimed to herself.
Out of the dangers of running for her life on a daily basis, it felt nice to be able to relax for once! She didn't have to worry about fighting demons or the like anymore, and it felt nice to embrace that knowledge. She couldn't help but feel giddy just thinking about it.
She could just focus on her life in the modern era and get back on top of her studies. She was pumped and determined to have this year be better than her prior one. Then again, that wasn't exactly that hard of a year to beat…
Kagome shook her head and turned to leave the bathroom. She bid her mother farewell before walking out the door with her bag on her shoulder. In her arm was a skateboard with a pastel pink underside. A few stickers were pressed there, but nothing too intense. A heart here and there, a star mixed in among the scattered customization.
She made it to the bottom of the shrine steps and dropped the board to the ground. She hopped on it and made her way down the sidewalk to her school.

Upon making it to the school, she was about to hop off her board. She lost her balance when she ran over something on the ground, and she stumbled forward to try and catch herself. She ended up tripping and falling forward, but she didn't fall to the ground.
She stumbled into someone ahead of her, taking him down with her. She sat back, hand going to her ankle she'd twisted in her failed attempt of catching herself. The pain faded as she used her energy to heal it. A second later, she picked her head up to look at the person she'd taken down as she fell.
He had her skateboard in hand, looking at it. Kagome's blue eyes soon met a pair of amber.
"Oh, you skate?" he asked as he looked at her. She saw the light in his eyes as he perked up. "I'm Reki," he said, introducing himself. "I've never seen you here before," he said a second later. "What's your name?"
Kagome nodded. "You haven't seen me because this is actually my first day," she explained. "I had some… um… health issues that kept me from starting at the normal semester start," she clarified. "You can just call me Kagome," she supplied in return. "I'm not one for formalities so much."
Reki grinned. "Me neither," he said as he stood up. Kagome followed up onto her own feet, and he handed the board back to her. "So, skating…-" he mentioned a second time. Kagome smiled and nodded.
"I'm not the best at it, but I do know how," she said. "As you can see, I'm pretty clumsy on my feet though."
Reki laughed. "Yeah, I kinda gathered," he teased. Kagome arched a brow in response. "I ask because I skate, too," he explained. Kagome's eyes lit up.
"Yeah?" she asked, and he nodded.
"Yeah!" he responded. "Since you're new, what do you say to being friends?" he asked. "It can be a little hard trying to fit in when you're new and all."
Kagome nodded, accepting the offer. "Sure," she said. "You don't seem that bad," she mused. She could feel his aura. It was nice; pleasant; calming. She couldn't just turn the offer down, even if she wanted to.
She gripped her skateboard under her arm as she followed alongside her redheaded classmate.
Auroua-chan: I'm redoing this one. There's a bit that I really want to change, and there are other things that need to be added. This chapter got a complete rewrite. I didn't dislike the original, but this one feels better imo. Plus there was a glimpse of baby Kagome with Adam, Cherry and Joe.
The pairing is still up for debate. From the previous versions, there were suggestions like Langa/Kagome, Langa/Kagome/Reki, Adam/Kagome, and Cherry/Kagome. For now, it'll be between those four options. I do have my personal thoughts on the pairing, but I'm not pressed for a final decision just yet. They all have their appeal for different reasons hehe.
Anyway, that's it for now! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting. If not, sorry!
Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
