Rubashov woke up after his execution at the end of his soviet purge trial, expecting to see either heaven or hell, he instead sees a cave interior. He is certain this is not an afterlife because he would either be in the very best of futures or the very worst of them, and he is clearly in neither. He asks himself, confounded, "How can this be? It's not like I survived or anything! Plus, no human known has survived bullet to head at point-blank range!".
Rubashov, desperate for answers, leaves the cave, stepping straight into what I call a 'Sun Slap', especially since Rubashov hasn't seen the light of day since before he was first arrested by the Soviet Communist Party, he devoted his life to the SCP(Soviet Communist Party), but he was arrested either way. All he even wanted was, through his words and deeds, prove his loyalty to the party, but they wouldn't believe him and they killed him.
He checks what supplies he has and finds out he can hardly believe his luck, he seems to have: His Pince-Nez, for whatever reason, a hammer and a sickle, two symbols of the USSR, and will also likely come in handy if he ends up in a fight with anyone else here, a pistol, he checks the pistol, and it is, by some blessing from above, fully loaded with live rounds, and he appears to have some cigarettes he had been addicted to smoking for some time, along with a way to light it, but he was going to search even more when he saw one of the most confounding things ever, a goose, with the body proportions of a human, intently looking for someone, calling out "Peter! Peter! Are you in here?! Is one of his soldiers in here? I need to send a message to Peter, leader of the Viet Army Of Christ!"
A bit later, Rubashov decides to leave the area, heading for civilization, knowing he will likely be surrounded by other strange animals, decides to head into a bar for some beer, now that he has found quite a bit of dropped money that he knows will soon be needed if he wants to know the alcohol, he finds himself some wood and paint and some small and relatively thin ropes, and carves a vaguely human shape with his sickle, painting in the center the emblem of the USSR.
