Skye woke up to her alarm the next morning. She reached over and shut it off before turning onto her back and stretching. She slowly opened her eyes, adjusting to the light streaming in through the crack in her curtains.

She laid there for a few minutes, waking up fully before she got up and went to her bathroom. She took a shower and started getting ready for the day. When she got out of the shower she wrapped herself in a towel and plugged in her hair dryer and curling iron. She dried and curled her hair before doing her makeup. When she was done in the bathroom she went into the bedroom and got dressed in her school uniform that she had laid out the night before. Once she was fully dressed and ready, she went out to the kitchen.

"Good morning," she said.

"Good morning," Steve said. He was at the stove making some eggs.

"You're cooking?" Skye asked with a smirk.

Steve shook his head. "Yes, contrary to popular belief, I can cook some things."

Skye giggled as she went into the fridge and grabbed some orange juice.

When the eggs were ready Steve added them to a plate that already had some fruit on it and grabbed the toast that had just popped up from the toaster. He set the plate on the table with a fork.

"Eat," he told Skye.

Skye sat down with her juice. "Thank you."

Morgan came running into the kitchen with Pepper close behind.

Steve plated up a second plate and put it in Morgan's usual spot.

"Thank you," Pepper said to Steve.

"No problem," Steve said.

Morgan sat in her seat, and both girls ate their breakfast.

"You two aren't going to eat?" Skye asked.

"I already have," Pepper said.

"I'm going out for breakfast after you go to school," Steve said.

"Ooh, with whom?" Skye asked.

"Bucky," Steve said.

"You two do that often," Skye said.

"We try to, yes," Steve said.

Skye nodded and finished eating before putting her dishes in the dishwasher. She went back to her room and grabbed her backpack before heading back to the kitchen.

"Happy's taking me to school?" Skye asked.

"He is," Happy said as he came into the kitchen. "And, if we don't get a move on you, will be late."

"Bye," she said to everyone who was in the kitchen before going with Happy down to his vehicle and starting the drive to school.

"It's your first full year at this school, you're feeling ready?" Happy asked.

"Yes, I feel more ready than I did last year," Skye said. "At least I know my way around and have friends."

Happy nodded.

"And, admittedly, I have missed our chats when you drive me and pick me up," Skye said with a smile.

Happy smiled and pulled into the school grounds. "Glad to know you enjoy them."

Once he parked, Skye undid her seatbelt. "I will see you after school," she said before getting out and going inside the school.

She said hello to the dean, who was welcoming everyone in, before going and finding her locker. She was glad that her locker was the same as last year so she didn't need to find a new one. She opened her locker and started to empty her backpack.

She heard someone clear their throat behind her. She looked behind her to see Carly standing there.

"What do you want?" Skye asked.

"You might have my cousin fooled, but I'm not stupid. He is getting his life together. You stay away from him," Carly said.

Skye let out a huffed laugh. "Apparently, I can't trust him to not do the one thing I asked him, so don't worry about it. I won't be hanging out with him," Skye said as she grabbed what she needed for her first class and closed her locker. She walked away from Carly and went to her first class. She sat down off to the side of the front row. Before long Lily sat down next to her.

"Hey!" Lily said.

"Hi," Skye said with a small smile.

"What's wrong?" Lily asked.

"Carly," Skye said quietly.

"What did she do?" Lily asked.

"I guess Tucker told her about our conversation, that I'm not the one who ratted him out, and that she needs to lay off me. Well, her exact words were 'you might have my cousin fooled by I'm not stupid, he is getting his life together, you stay away from him,'" Skye told her friend.

"Seriously? She thinks you are going to be a problem for him?" Lily asked.

"Because everything is always my fault," Skye said sarcastically. "And the only thing I asked of him was to not say anything to his cousin, and he did the exact opposite."

"I'm sorry," Lily said. "But maybe he thought he could help things?"

"I told him it would just make things worse, and that's exactly what it did. I clearly can't trust him," Skye said softly.

Lily saw the look on Skye's face. She looked heartbroken. "Skye, I'm so sorry."

Skye nodded a little, forcing a fake smile.

Lily was going to say more, but the teacher spoke, quieting the chatter and getting everyone's attention.

Skye went through her morning kind of out of it. At lunch, she decided to skip the cafeteria and found a quiet corner of the school where she could just sit by herself, She wasn't hungry anyway.

Lily, Ivy, and Anna were in the cafeteria, wondering where their friend was.

"Carly and she had a bit of a conversation before classes this morning, and Skye was really upset," Lily said, explaining what had happened.

"You don't think she left the school?" Anna asked. She took out her phone and texted Skye. "Where are you? Lily told us what happened. Are you okay?"

Skye heard her phone go off. She looked at it and sighed before texting back, "No, I'm not okay. I just don't feel like being in the cafeteria right now."

Anna got her text and told the other two what she said before she texted back, "You're still at school right? Where? We can come and sit with you."

Skye texted back, "Yes, I'm still at the school, but I just want to be alone."

Anna sighed and showed the text.

"Well, I have class with her after lunch. I'll make sure she is okay," Ivy said.

"Okay," Anna and Lily said.

Skye looked at her phone and took a breath before she texted Tucker, "I've only ever asked you for one thing. ONE. THING. To not get in between your cousin and my issues. That we had agreed to be civil. Yet this morning, before classes even started, she came to me and with what she said to me informed me that you did what I asked you not to. There were only two people I spent time with in foster care that I trusted, Kate and you. Kate breaking that trust hurt and still does. But when we talked, I told you that I was having a hard time trusting that you wouldn't turn your back on me. You told me you wouldn't. And yet you did. I will not be giving you a chance to hurt me even more. Don't call me. Don't text me. If you see me in public forget that you know me." She took a breath before she pressed send.

Shortly after the warning bell rang, Skye wiped at her eyes and stood up. She went to her locker and grabbed her books for the next class before going and taking a seat in the back corner. Ivy came into the class and saw her and went and sat next to her.

"Hey," Ivy said.

"Hi," Skye said.

"Do you want to talk?" Ivy asked.

"No," Skye said.

Skye tried to focus on class the rest of the afternoon, but she just couldn't. At the end of the day, she went to her locker and grabbed all her stuff.

Anna met her at her locker. "I hadn't seen you today. Just wanted to say hi."

Skye smiled a bit. " Hey, sorry."

"It's okay. Did your day get any better?" Anna asked.

Skye shook her head and showed her the text she sent Tucker.

Anna looked at it. "Jerk, he didn't even respond."

"I told him not to text me, so he's listening, I guess," Skye said.

Anna handed her back her phone. "You didn't really want him to listen, did you?"

Skye sighed and put her phone in her pocket and her bag on her back before closing her locker.

"Skye, I'm sorry," Anna said.

"I thought being picky about the people I like meant I wouldn't get heartbroken. I've never felt so crappy," Skye said.

Anna hugged her friend. "Boys are stupid."

Skye hugged her and let out a soft chuckle. "Yes, they are," Skye said.

They two broke the embrace and headed towards the front door of the school.

When they got outside Skye looked around for Happy's vehicle and found him.

Anna saw her ride as well. "Call me later okay?"

Skye nodded. "Okay."

They went their separate ways, and Skye got into the back of Happy's vehicle.

"Hey, Kid," Happy said.

"Hi," Skye said.

They started the drive.

"Good day?" Happy asked.

"Not really," Skye said.

"Oh?" Happy asked.

"It's stupid," Skye said.

"If it's important to you, it's important," Happy said.

"It's about a guy," Skye said.

Happy nodded. "Guy from school do something stupid?"

"Not from school, no, but he broke my trust," Skye said.

"That's not stupid," Happy said.

Skye shrugged and closed her eyes.

Happy pulled up next to the compound a few minutes later and saw a teenage boy standing there. He opened his window. "Can I help you?"

"I'm looking for Skye," Tucker said.

Skye's eyes opened. Happy looked in the rearview mirror at her.

Skye sighed and nodded.

Happy opened her window.

"Apparently you don't understand the definition of pretending you don't know me anymore," Skye said.

"Skye, I wasn't trying to make things worse. I just wanted her to leave you alone," Tucker said.

"I told you not to. I told you it would make things worse," Skye said.

"Please, just tell me what she said," Tucker said.

Skye shook her head. She was suddenly feeling light-headed.

Tucker noticed she was going white. "Skye, you're going white, are you okay?"

Happy looked back at her. "Skye?"

"I'm fine," Skye said softly.

"Skye, you're not. Is it your-" Tucker started.

Skye cut him off. "I said I'm fine."

Happy looked out at Tucker. "You know what the problem is?"

Tucker looked between the two. "Um."

Skye shook her head at him.

Tucker sighed. "Her blood sugar."

Happy looked back at Skye. "Think that's the problem?"

Skye didn't say anything.

"Skye, do you have something in your bag that can help?" Happy asked.

Skye sighed and took out a piece of candy from her uneaten lunch and ate it.

"Okay, I'm getting her inside. You two can fight about this another day," Happy said.

Tucker nodded.

Skye didn't say anything.

Happy drove onto the compound. He parked, got out, and opened her door. "Are you okay to move? Do I need to get your dad?"

"Yes, and definitely no," Skye said as she grabbed her bag and got out.

Happy went with her inside, where Dr. Banner was in the kitchen.

"Where is Steve?" Happy asked.

"He is at a meeting," Dr. Banner said. "Skye, are you okay?" The girl was still kind of white.

"I'm fine," Skye said before going to go to her room.

Happy put a hand on her shoulder and moved her to sit at the table. "You need to eat something."

Skye sighed and sat, dropping her bag at her feet.

"Her blood sugar dropping?" Dr. Banner asked.

"I believe so," Happy said.

"I ate something in the car," Skye said.

"Have you tested it?" Bruce asked.

"No," Skye said.

Bruce crossed his arms and looked at her expectantly.

Skye took her test kit out of her bag and checked. She sighed before showing it to Bruce.

"Skyler, that is dangerously low," he said as he went to the fridge, got her a juice box, and handed it to her.

Skye took it and drank it.

"Do you feel low?" Bruce asked.

"No," Skye lied.

"Skyler," Bruce said with a raised eyebrow.

"Fine, maybe a little," Skye said.

"Have you eaten anything since lunch?" Bruce asked.

"I had some candy in the car," Skye said.

"And it looked like your lunch was still in your lunch bag when you took the candy out," Happy said.

Skye said nothing.

Bruce shook his head he picked up her bag and opened it, taking out her lunch bag and setting it on the table.

Skye opened it without being told, took out her sandwich, and started to eat it.

Happy looked at his phone when a text came in. "You'll make sure Steve is aware of this?" Happy asked Bruce.

"I will," Bruce said.

Happy left to go deal with something.

Bruce sat down across from Skye.

"You don't have to watch me eat," Skye said.

"I'm not sitting here to watch you eat, exactly. I'm sitting here until I know you're going to be okay," Bruce said. "And maybe you'll explain why you didn't eat your lunch at lunch?"

"I just wasn't hungry. I'm not particularly hungry now, either," Skye said.

Bruce nodded.

"Are you going to lecture me?" Skye asked.

"Would a lecture from me be effective?" Bruce asked.

Skye shrugged.

"I think I will leave the lecturing up to your dad," Bruce said.

"Or you could just lecture me and not tell my dad," Skye said.

"Your dad needs to know either way," Bruce said.

Skye sighed.

They were quiet until Skye finished her sandwich.

"Did you find out anything from looking into my mother's DNA?" Skye asked.

"Not yet," Bruce said. "I've never seen anything like the DNA she and you share. It's going to take me some time to figure out what we are looking at."

Skye nodded.

"But it's not something you need to worry about," Bruce said.

"Hard not to," Skye said.

"Is the worrying about what this means for you why you weren't hungry today?" Bruce asked.

"No," Skye said. "Can I ask you something personal?"

Bruce tilted his head and cautiously responded, "Ask, depending on what the question is, I might answer."

"You like Nat right?" Skye asked.

"What's not to like?" Bruce asked.

"You know what I mean," Skye said with a smile

Bruce smiled. "Why do you ask that question?"

"I just-" Skye said, trying to find the words to explain.

"Do you want to know because there is someone you have a crush on?" Bruce asked.

"I did, and they broke my trust. I don't know if I can get past that," Skye said.

Bruce nodded.

"So, I asked if you like Nat because, if you do, and she broke your trust, would you stop liking her?" Skye asked.

Bruce nodded. "Okay, fair enough. If I had feelings for anyone and they broke my trust, I think it would depend on exactly what they did. But it would probably be hard to get back to that place."

Skye nodded.

"Do you want to explain what this guy did that broke your trust?" Bruce asked.

"It was hypothetical," she lied.

"Skye, that's very specific for hypothetical," he said.

Skye sighed. "I had trouble with a girl at my school last year. I found out she is a cousin of someone I know from foster care. His name is Tucker. He ended up in juvie, and I should have that night as well, but I was fortunate to have my dad convince the police to give me one more chance. But because I was the only one that night who didn't end up in juvie, it was believed I was the one who gave up Tucker. I didn't, but his cousin for some reason thought I did, anyway. I ran into Tucker, and during the conversation, I told him I didn't sell him out and he believes me, but I explained that I met his cousin and that she doesn't. He offered to talk to his cousin and tell her to lay off me, and I told him not to do that. I didn't want this to restart drama when his cousin and I had come to an agreement that we would be civil. Well, he talked to her. Today before classes even started she confronted me at my locker, telling me that Tucker might believe me but she doesn't and to stay away from him. that he is trying to get his life together and he doesn't need me bringing him down," Skye said.

"I texted him at lunch and told him to forget I exist because I have only ever asked him for one thing and he couldn't even do that. He was waiting outside the compound when I got back with Happy, and he explained that he was just trying to help. I know he thought he was helping, but I told him it would make this worse not help," Skye said.

Bruce listened and nodded. He knew about the situation. "That is a hard situation. I take it you two have been through a lot together?"

Skye nodded. "We were in one group home together. It wasn't great. But we have been picked up by police together several times. He has covered for me in situations, which is why that night I left his name off the list of people I was forced to give."

"If it had been found out you'd left his name off the list that night?" Bruce asked.

"I don't think anyone would have been able to keep me out of juvie because I would have gone to my grave not giving up his name. It was part of the deal that I give up the names of everyone I was with that night," Skye said.

"So you risked your own freedom for this guy, and he didn't even keep his mouth shut with his cousin," Bruce said.

"He kept my name out of his mouth more than once for me before I did it for him. I didn't expect him to keep out of the drama with his cousin because I didn't give his name. I wanted him to do it because we are friends," Skye said.

Bruce nodded.

"He saved me a lot of charges. My record would be longer if he hadn't," Skye said.

Bruce nodded again. "Okay, well it sounds like this guy has protected you in the past, so maybe he really was just trying to help you by talking to his cousin, and she is his family. And you like him. If he likes you too, maybe he is worried about his cousin hurting your future together?"

"But, by talking to her he has just made her hate me even more," Skye said.

"Okay, how close is he with his cousin?" Bruce asked.

"I don't know. I know they were close when they were young. Tucker lived with her and her parents until he started getting into trouble, and her parents decided that they didn't want to deal with it and put him into the system. I don't know how much they have stayed in contact. He had mentioned her a few times during the first year he was in care. that's when we were in a group home together, but he seemed to stop after a while. She is seemingly very protective of him, though, which he did mention when we talked recently," Skye said.

"He isn't back living with them?" Bruce asked.

"I don't think so," Skye said. "I think he would have mentioned it if he was."

"Well, you should find out. If his family decided to let him come back, he might feel obligated to tell them things," Bruce said.

"Then why wouldn't he just tell me that? Why would he say he would stay out of it? I'd have been a little annoyed, but not to the degree I am," Skye said.

"I get that, but you can't know what his thought process was if you don't give him a chance to explain," Bruce said.

"If it was Nat, would you give her a chance?" Skye asked.

"If I was in your shoes and had the history you two have, yes, I'd give whomever a chance to explain," Bruce said.

"You really won't admit you like her," Skye said with a smirk.

"That is between her and me. I don't need to answer it to help you in this situation," Bruce said.

Skye chuckled. "Okay, that's fair."

"Check your sugar level, please," Bruce said.

Skye did so, and it was within range. She showed him.

"Good, is this situation why you weren't hungry at lunch?" Bruce asked.

Skye nodded.

"You have to be really careful, Skye. Going as low as you did, I'm sure you know, you can end up in shock and pass out," Bruce said.

"I know. It wouldn't be the first time," Skye said.

"And do you want it to happen again?" Bruce asked.

"No, of course not," Skye said.

"So, don't let it happen again," Bruce said.

Skye nodded.

"Don't let what happen again?" Steve asked, coming into the kitchen.

Bruce looked at Skye. "You tell him, or I will."

Skye sighed and told her dad everything that happened.

When Skye was done explaining Steve took a breath and said nothing for what felt like five minutes, but was only really a few seconds.

"Your number is okay now?" Steve asked.

"Yes, I just checked," Skye told him.

"This is not the first time we have had an issue with this, Skye," Steve said.

Skye looked down and started to play with a hangnail on her right hand.

Bruce got up. "I'm going to let you two talk."

"Thanks, Bruce," Steve said as Bruce left the room.

"Skye let's go talk in another room," Steve said.

Skye got up and went with him to her room, where she went and sat on her window seat, hugging her knees to her chest, and burying her face in them to hide her tears.

"Skye, I'm not angry with you," Steve said as he sat next to her.

"Well, it feels like you are," she said as the tears fell.

"Look at me, Skye," Steve said.

Skye looked up.

"Skye, I'm not angry, I'm worried. You know the dangers, yet you ignore them and put yourself at risk," Steve said.

"I'm sorry. I can't help when I'm just not hungry," she snapped.

"Skye, watch the tone," Steve said.

Skye took a breath but didn't say anything.

"I get you were hurting. I understand our mood can affect our levels of hunger. But we need to figure out what you can do so if this happens again you can still get what your body needs," Steve said.

"Like what?" Skye asked.

"Meal replacement drinks, keep a few in your locker so you have them if you need them. It's better than nothing," Steve said.

"Did you use them when you were diabetic?" Skye asked.

"No, they didn't exist at the time," Steve said.

Skye nodded a little. "I just don't get how I can still be diabetic; I could believe it when I thought I was only half super, but I get it from both sides. And the super serum got rid of it for you, so how did I end up with it at all with super serum in me? I healed from an incurable heart problem, yet I can still be diabetic. It doesn't make sense."

"I agree it doesn't," Steve said. "I wish I could answer that for you, but I just don't know. But, regardless if it makes sense, it is what you have to deal with, and you can't just ignore it and hope it goes away. So finding solutions to make it manageable is your only option."

Skye sighed. "Fine."

"Good," Steve said. "Now, do you want to talk about what happened today with Carly and Tucker?"

"I just feel, heartbroken. I feel like when I found out what Kate was doing, but different," Skye said.

Steve nodded.

Skye nodded. "I don't know why. I trusted them both. They both broke my trust. Shouldn't it be the same?"

Steve smiled a little. "Skye, it's different because you feel differently about the two of them."

Skye sighed. "If this is how much it hurts when a crush hurts me, I think I'm good never getting involved with anyone romantically."

Steve chuckled softly. "As your dad I wish that you never did fall in love with someone. But you are going to. and you are going to get heartbroken again. Heartbreak is a part of life, every heartbreak teaches us something."

"What exactly does it teach me? That I can't trust the people I have trusted for as long as I can remember?" Skye asked.

"Kate was manipulated. She was tricked into helping. That doesn't excuse what she did. But I don't think she went into it thinking you were going to be hurt, and I think you know that. And you have said you saw her as a sister. Tucker, you feel something more for him, and I don't think he was tricked into telling his cousin about what you asked him not to," Steve said.

"So, I shouldn't give him a chance to explain it?" Skye asked.

Steve thought for a moment before shrugging. "That's a choice I can't make for you."

"What would you do if it was you?" Skye asked.

"Well, he did show up here. I think he wanted to try and explain things. You could give him a chance to explain it. That doesn't mean you have to accept his reasoning," Steve said.

Skye let out a breath and nodded.

"But the decision is yours; you do whatever you think is right for you," Steve said.

"I will, thank you," Skye said. "How was your day?" Skye asked her dad.

"It was good," Steve said.

"Breakfast was good?" Skye asked with a smirk.

"It was," Steve said. "Why the smirk?"

"No reason," Skye said

"Mhm," Steve said. "Out with it. Skye.

"Out with what?" Skye asked.

Steve let out a breath and shook his head.

"Anything else you want to talk about?" Steve asked.

"No," Skye said.

"You got homework?" Steve asked.

"Just need to get organized," Skye said.

Steve got up and kissed her head. "I'll leave you to it," he said before he left the room.
