It had been a few weeks since Skye had lost control of her abilities in her room. She was at the training grounds outside, working on getting her abilities to work at will. Wanda was trying to work with her, but Skye was not making it easy on Wanda . Skye had been having a really hard time since it happened. No matter how many people told her she didn't need to feel guilty, she did. The worse she felt, the less control she had of her abilities. And she was angry with Wanda, but Wanda didn't know why.
After Skye had set three trees on fire when she was trying to hit a training dummy Wanda spoke. "It is time to stop, take a break."
"No," Skye said, trying again to hit the training dummy with fire but again missing.
"Skyler, stop. Now," Wanda said.
"No," Skye said as she tried again.
"Do not make me physically make you stop," Wanda said.
Skye turned her attention to Wanda, her eyes narrowing, "So you don't want me to get better at controlling it?"
"Skye, you need to get a handle on your emotions before you can get a handle on these abilities," Wanda said.
"Well, that's never going to happen then," Skye said.
"Why are you so angry right now?" Wanda asked.
"Because I can't control this!" Skye said.
"No, you've been angry for a while," Wanda said
"No, I just want to be able to control this," she said, looking down.
Wanda shook her head. "Skye, you are never going to be able to if you are keeping something inside you that needs to come out."
"Well, I don't want to talk about it," Skye said, turning her attention back to the training dummy.
"Skye, we are done training now," Wanda said.
Skye ignored her and tried to force her abilities.
Wanda took out her phone and texted Steve, "Your daughter will not listen to me."
Steve sighed when he saw the text and made his way out to the training grounds. He saw Skye with fire coming out of her hands and watched as she aimed for the training dummy and almost ended up hitting Wanda.
Wanda moved out of the way when she saw it coming, avoiding being hit.
"Skyler, enough," Steve said in a loud stern voice.
Skye stopped and looked up at him.
"You are done training. Inside. Now," Steve said.
"But," Skye said.
Steve went over to her and grabbed her by the upper arm and landed a hard swat to her butt. "I said now."
Skye whimpered but quickly went when her dad let her go.
Steve looked at Wanda.
"I can not train with her anymore. She does not listen to me," Wanda said.
Steve nodded. "I will be having a conversation with her about the disrespect. But you could also have that conversation with her. Skye is more like you than I think you realize. Yes, the traumas you two have experienced are not the same, but I know you can see that you share part of her abilities of elemental control. Hers comes from her emotions, but it's still control of the elements. I, of course, will not force you to train with her, but I think you are the best option for her."
Wanda let out a breath. "I can not train with someone who does not listen to me."
"Wanda, she usually does, she's just having a hard time," Steve said.
Wanda sighed. "She's holding on to anger from something. She has been for a while, and, whatever it is, is what is keeping her from controlling her abilities. I have asked. She will not tell me. She does not trust me. I can not get her to listen no matter what I say or do."
"You know she doesn't trust any of us very easily. There will be things she always keeps to herself. I don't think it's personal. Why are you taking it that way?" Steve asked.
"I don't know," Wanda said. "I just know what holding on to anger did to me. I do not want her to have to deal with that. I do not want her to turn that anger on someone she shouldn't."
Steve nodded. "Her anger might not be against a specific person."
Wanda nodded a bit. "I will talk to her."
"Okay," Steve said. "You're okay?"
Wanda nodded. "I will be in shortly."
Steve went inside and found his daughter hiding in the library.
"This seems to be your new favorite place," he said, leaning on the door frame.
Skye shrugged.
"Why did you give Wanda a hard time today?" Steve asked, crossing his arms.
"I don't want to train with her anymore," Skye said.
"Why not?" Steve asked.
"She went into my mind to try and figure out whatever she thinks I'm hiding," Skye said.
"She did what?" Steve asked angrily.
Skye nodded. "She doesn't know I know."
"Wait, she did it without asking you?" Steve asked, his anger rising.
Skye nodded again.
"Did she hurt you? Manipulate something in your mind?" Steve asked, moving to sit next to her on the loveseat.
"No," Skye said. "She just went into it. I don't know exactly what she saw, if anything."
Steve nodded. "I will have a conversation with her. Why didn't you tell me?"
Skye shrugged. "I'm kinda worried about what she might have seen."
"What from your memories is so bad you don't want to talk about?" Steve asked.
"It's not a memory," Skye said. "I mean there are a lot of bad things in my memories that I'd rather not everyone know every detail of, but that's not the problem."
"What is it?" Steve asked.
Skye teared up. "I'm just so angry."
"Angry about what?" Steve asked.
"That, before I came here, no one protected me. That it was just one person after another who turned their back on me, and the longer I am here, somewhere safe, the angrier I get with the people who were supposed to protect me," Skye said her fist clenching. "The angrier I get, the more I want. . . revenge," she whispered at the end of her sentence.
"Skye, take a breath," he said.
Skye did so and unclenched her fist.
"I understand you're angry. I understand why you're angry, but you can't hold in that anger, not with the abilities you have. You need to find a way to either make peace with it or legally go after them," Steve said.
Skye nodded looking down at her hands.
"I might not know all the details of what you have been through, but I know it was hell. Getting revenge won't fix the anger you're feeling, it's just going to make you no better than them," Steve said.
Skye nodded. "I know you're right, I just- I can't let go of this anger."
"I'm going to get you set up with a therapist. I don't want to hear any arguments from you about it," Steve said.
Skye nodded. "Okay."
Steve kissed her head. "Thank you. I'm going to find Wanda and have a chat with her."
Skye nodded.
Steve got up and went into the kitchen, where he found Clint talking with Wanda.
"Hey, Barton, didn't know you were coming," Steve said, smiling at him.
"Hey, Steve, I have a meeting tomorrow with SHIELD, thought it was easier leaving from here," Barton said.
Steve nodded. "That makes sense. Well, I'm sorry to break up this conversation, but, Wanda, you and I need to have a conversation, in the office."
Wanda looked at him and tilted her head. "About?"
Steve crossed his arms. "About the proper use of your abilities."
Clint looked from Steve to Wanda with a raised eyebrow.
Wanda let out a breath, "I just wanted to help her."
"Office. Now," Steve said.
Wanda got up and went towards the office.
"Think I can be part of this conversation?" Clint asked.
"Sure, you can let me know if I'm overreacting as a father," Steve said.
Clint got up and the two went into the office behind Wanda.
Clint closed the door behind them.
Wanda sat on the couch, and Steve and Clint moved chairs to sit across from her.
"Why don't you start by explaining what you did," Steve said.
"I used my telekinesis to try and figure out what has Skye so angry," Wanda said.
"With her permission?" Clint asked.
"No, I did not know she knew," Wanda said.
"Wanda, I thought we had gotten past you doing this," Clint said.
"I was not trying to hurt her," Wanda said.
"You manipulated her. Even if the hurt wasn't physical, you broke whatever trust she had in you," Steve said. "Getting Skye to trust you is hard. And she did. It's why I couldn't understand her blatant disregard for what you were telling her to do."
Wanda nodded.
"Even before she came here before she knew us outside of what the public knows, she told me you were one of her two favorite Avengers," Clint said.
Wanda looked down.
"You broke the trust of someone who doesn't trust many people. What was so important for you to know?" Clint asked.
"I saw the look in her eyes, the anger. I recognized it from my own anger towards Tony, and I did not want her to make the wrong choice. I wanted to see why she was so angry so maybe I could help her," Wanda said.
"Why didn't you just come to me with your concern?" Steve asked.
"I do not have an answer for that," Wanda said.
"Did you even try to ask her?" Steve asked.
"After I couldn't get into her head. It's almost like the walls she has put up externally are in her head as well," Wanda said.
"You couldn't get into her head?" Steve asked.
"No," Wanda said.
"Has that ever happened before?" Steve asked.
"No, it has not," Wanda said.
"Do you have anything else you want to say about this? An explanation that will make any sense?" Steve asked Wanda.
"Just that I'm sorry. I will apologize to Skye and try and fix it," Wanda said.
Steve nodded. "Clint, anything else you want to say?"
"I'm disappointed in you, Wanda," Clint said, shaking his head as he got up. "I will leave you two to finish this conversation."
Wanda took a breath. "I am sorry, Clint."
Clint nodded and left the room.
When the door was closed Steve looked at Wanda.
"I am very sorry, Steve," Wanda said.
Steve nodded and moved to sit next to Wanda. "I know. And you will say that to Skye, too, I'm sure. But that's not enough." He put a hand out to her.
Wanda nodded and put her hand in his before she was pulled over his lap.
"This is not the first time we have had to have this conversation, so it shouldn't be hard for you to tell me what you did wrong," Steve said.
"I used my abilities on someone on the same side without her permission, breaking the trust she and I had," Wanda said.
"Right, and I do not care what your thought process was, that will never be okay. You think someone is hiding something that should come out, you talk to them or me," Steve said before he brought his hand down on her butt.
Wanda whimpered from the shock.
Steve continued to bring his hand down on her butt.
Wanda stayed still and pretty quiet, trying to focus on anything but the discomfort until he started to focus his attention on the lower part of her butt.
She yelped and kicked her feet a little.
"Get out of your head and think about why you're here, Wanda," Steve said.
"Sorry," Wanda said softly
Steve pushed down her pants and continued to bring his hand down.
Wanda could no longer focus on anything but the discomfort of her butt.
Steve continued until she was sobbing and promising she would never do it again. He pulled her pants up, helped her to sit up, and held her until she calmed down.
Steve unwrapped his arms from around her and let her move.
"Sorry, Steve, it won't happen again," Wanda said.
"I believe you. Don't let that trust be broken," Steve said.
"I won't," Wanda said.
They both stood up and left the office. Wanda went to her room, and Steve went and found Skye still in the library.
She was sitting with her legs crossed in front of her with her back against the armrest of the loveseat. She was reading.
"For someone who hated reading just a few months ago you read often," Steve said with a smile.
Skye smiled and put a bookmark on her book. She shrugged. "Guess I found what I like to read."
Steve sat in a chair facing the loveseat. Skye turned so she was facing him.
"I have a couple of things to talk to you about," Steve said.
"Okay," Skye said.
"First, when I was away with everyone we were following a lead to finding Hydra," Steve said.
Skye nodded. "Okay."
"We found a records room with a lot of files. They were ones about me, your mother, and you, your mother's mother, and many generations back," Steve said.
Skye let out a breath. "Okay, anything we didn't already know?"
"Your mother either lied to me in that letter or was lied to herself," Steve said. "Your abilities are genetic. Your mother got them from her mother and many generations back along the female line."
"The uncle who took your mother in when your grandparents passed knew about these abilities. And based on what I saw, I'm guessing he had your grandparents killed so he could get your mother for Hydra's purposes," Steve said.
Skye nodded slightly.
"Your mother was used and abused at the will of Hydra. She was highly manipulated to connect with me. They wanted her to conceive a child with me because they suspected that a child with the super serum and the abilities from your mother would be unstoppable. They thought if trained properly you would be unstoppable. They obviously wanted you for Hydra's side," Steve said.
Skye nodded. "And if I can't get it under control?"
"If it's true, you could cause havoc," Steve said.
Skye's eyes welled with tears.
"But I know you, Skye. You have a good heart and are so strong. You will get this figured out," Steve said.
Skye nodded again.
"But it means you can not keep your feelings inside, Skye. You have got to find someone you can talk to, someone who can help you. I am always an option. But anyone here will work, too," Steve said.
"Okay, I will," Skye said.
"Good, one other thing. This ability you have, it seems even Wanda's telekinesis can't get through," Steve said.
"She didn't get into my head?" Skye asked.
"She did, but she said it seemed like the walls you put up externally are also internal. Or, at least, that is how she described it," Steve said.
Skye nodded. "Are you going to make me keep training with her?"
"Would you listen to her if I did?" Steve asked.
Skye nodded slightly. "If it's what you think is best, I will respect that. And do as I'm told. But I won't like it."
Steve smiled and opened his arms.
Skye went over and hugged him, Steve wrapped her in a tight hug. "I'm so proud of you, Skye."
Skye smiled a little.
"In answer to your question, no. I will not make you train with Wanda right now. I know she will need to earn your trust back and that will take time," Steve said. "I will be working with you and maybe someone else, but we will figure that out together."
"Okay," Skye said. "Have you learned anything else about my abilities?"
"You come from a line of strong women, who didn't always use their abilities for good," Steve said.
Skye took a breath and her eyes welled with tears. "So I come from evil?"
"You come from a line of strong women who didn't always make the right choices. But that does not mean you are evil. That does not mean your abilities are evil. Your abilities are just abilities. How you choose to use them is based on who you are, not who you're descended from," Steve said.
Skye nodded. "Can I ask a favor?"
"Anything," Steve said.
"If I ever turn evil, take me down. Do not let me hurt innocent people," Skye said.
Steve took a breath.
"Please, Daddy," Skye said.
"Skye, I know that's never going to happen. The fact that you are so worried about this proves that you do not have an evil bone in your body," Steve said.
"Then why do I feel like I want revenge on the people who hurt me?" Skye asked.
"Because you're human," Steve said. "We all get angry with people who hurt us. You are young and learning, and my job is to teach you the right way to handle these things."
Skye nodded. "I'm just so scared."
"Tell you what, I know it's never going to happen. But if you ever use your abilities for evil, I will make sure you deal with the consequences," Steve said.
"Okay, deal," Skye said.
"Dad, I want to go through proper channels and bring down the foster father who sexually abused me," Skye said.
"Okay, I'll start the process," Steve said. "You will have to talk to the police and a lawyer about exactly what happened, in detail."
Skye nodded.
"And if you know anyone else who was a victim who is willing to come forward that will help," Steve said.
Skye nodded. "I have a couple of names of possible victims."
"Okay, make sure you don't force memories that they just want to forget," Steve said.
Skye nodded. "Okay."
"Are you okay? This was a lot of information," Steve said.
"Yes, I'm okay," Skye said.
Tony knocked on the partly-opened library door. "Sorry to interrupt."
"It's okay, What's up, Tony?" Steve asked.
"Skye, your room is finished being repaired, and it's ready when you are," Tony said to Skye.
Skye smiled. "Thank you, Uncle Tony."
"Not a problem, kid," Tony said before he left the room.
"You ready to see it?" Steve asked.
Skye nodded and got up. Steve got up also and went with her.
Skye opened the door to her room, and she smiled a bit. It looked different. She had destroyed pretty much everything in her frenzy. She stepped into the room and looked around. She had been able to pick out a few things for the room, and she saw those things around the room. She looked up at the wall and smiled. "I thought that had been destroyed," Skye said nodding to the silhouette painting of the girl.
"It was damaged, still is, but it was fixed enough that it can stay," Steve said.
Skye nodded. "Thank you."
"I have noticed you staring at it more than once. I knew you loved it," Steve said.
Skye smiled. "Yeah, I do."
"Is it everything you expected?" Steve asked.
"It's better," Skye said. "I don't really deserve it after I destroyed it," she mumbled.
"Skyler Sarah Rogers, I do not want to hear you saying those words ever again," Steve said sternly.
Skye whimpered. It wasn't often she was full-named.
"Do I need to repeat myself?" Steve asked.
"No, I got it," Skye said.
"Good, because you are a good kid who deserves everything good," Steve said.
Skye nodded slightly.
"I'm going to let you look around on your own," Steve said, squeezing her shoulder before he left her room.
Shortly after there was a knock on her door.
"Yes?" Skye said
Wanda went into the room and saw her sitting on her bed.
Skye took a breath.
"I am sorry, Skye, there is no excuse for doing what I did," Wanda said.
"Okay, why did you then?" Skye asked.
"You know about how I hated Tony before; how I had revenge on him on my mind. I recognized the look in your eyes. I do not know against whom, but I know you want revenge. And I did not want you to do it the wrong way. I should have asked you instead. I just did not think you would tell me. I want you to know I could not get into your mind. I do not know why, but I could not," Wanda said.
Skye nodded. "My dad told me you could not see anything."
"I am very sorry, Skye," Wanda said.
"I appreciate the apology, I just can't forgive you yet," Skye said.
"I understand," Wanda said.
"I'd like to be alone," Skye said.
Wanda nodded and got up, leaving Skye's room, and closing the door behind her.
