Skye woke up Monday morning when her alarm went off. She reached over and shut it off before turning over and trying to go back to sleep. About half an hour later, there was a knock on her door.
Skye groaned, "what?"
Steve opened the door a bit and peeked in. "It's time to get up."
"No," Skye said.
Steve opened the door more and raised an eyebrow. "Why not?"
"I don't want to," she mumbled.
"Are you feeling okay?" Steve asked
"Yeah, I just don't want to go to school today," Skye said.
"Is there a specific reason?" Steve asked.
"No," Skye lied.
"Than sorry, Peanut, you need to go to school. Get up and moving," he said.
Skye let out a breath, "k."
Steve left her room, closing the door behind her.
Skye looked at her phone to check the time before she dragged herself out of bed. She went into the bathroom and put her hair up in a messy bun, having no motivation or time to do much else. She returned to her bedroom and put on her school uniform before entering the kitchen.
Steve handed Skye her lunch bag and a breakfast sandwich wrapped in cling wrap. He knew she wouldn't have time to sit down and eat breakfast. "Go, Happy is waiting."
"Thanks," Skye said, taking them and going outside and getting into Happy's vehicle.
"Good morning," Happy said.
"Morning," Skye said as she did up her seatbelt.
Happy started to drive as Skye ate her breakfast sandwich.
"Rushed morning?" he asked.
"Yeah, slept past my alarm," Skye said.
Happy nodded.
Skye finished her sandwich and threw the cling wrap in her lunch bag. She sat back and closed her eyes.
"Slept past your alarm and still tired?" he asked.
Skye let out a breath. "I didn't sleep well."
"Ah, any particular reason?" Happy asked.
"I was up later than I should have been texting and googling things," Skye admitted.
"Ah," Happy said. "Texting that guy?"
"No," Skye said, "another friend."
"What were you googling that was so important?" Happy asked.
"I'd rather not say," Skye said.
"Nothing illegal?" Happy asked.
Skye chuckled. "No."
Happy nodded.
The rest of the ride to school was quiet.
"Thanks, Happy," Skye said before getting out of the car and going inside the school. She went to her locker, put her backpack and lunch away, and grabbed what she needed for her first class before she went to her class, getting into her seat just as the bell rang.
The day dragged on for Skye. She was exhausted, and by the end of the day, she had almost fallen asleep in class more than once. And her teachers were not impressed. She grabbed what she needed from her locker before she went out to Happy's car, and they went home.
She went inside and to her room, where she dropped her bag and flopped on her bed, pulling the blanket over her head to block out the world around her.
Ten minutes later, there was a knock on her bedroom door.
Skye sighed. "Yeah?"
Steve went in and closed the door behind him.
"What happened at school today?" Steve asked.
"Oh?" Skye asked.
"Got a call from your guidance counselor," Steve said, sitting on the chair in her room.
The room was silent for a minute before Steve let out a breath.
"Skye, come out from under the blanket, please," Steve said.
Skye pulled the blanket off her face and looked up at the ceiling.
"What happened, Skye?" Steve asked.
"I almost fell asleep in class a couple of times," Skye said.
"How come?" Steve asked.
"I was tired. I didn't sleep well," Skye said.
"Any particular reason?" Steve asked.
"You're not going to like the reason," Skye said.
"I'll try to understand," Steve said.
"I was up late texting and looking things up online," Skye said.
"Texting who?" Steve asked.
"I'd rather not say," Skye said.
"Tucker?" Steve asked.
"No," Skye said.
"What were you looking up online?" Steve asked.
"Um. . . would rather not say," Skye said.
"Okay, that's not an option," Steve said.
Skye didn't say anything.
"Skyler, I'm waiting for an answer," Steve said sternly.
Skye pulled the blanket back over her head.
Steve saw her phone on the bedside table. He got up and grabbed it.
Skye heard him moving around her room and pulled the blanket off as he picked up her phone.
"Skyler, either you tell me, or I will figure it out myself. And if I have to, you will be in trouble," Steve said.
"Sasha Shultz," Skye said. "The girl who set me up for shoplifting."
"You were looking her up on social media?" Steve asked.
"No, I was looking her up to see if she is somehow connected to you," Skye said.
"Okay, why do you think she would be?" Steve asked.
"Lila overheard her talking to someone about how much she hates you and me and how the shoplifting was just the start of what she was going to do to us," Skye said. "So I figured there had to be some reason."
Steve let out a frustrated breath. "Why didn't you tell me this?"
"I was going to when I figured out the connection," Skye said.
"Did you?" Steve aske
"No," Skye said.
"Was it Lila you were talking to?" Steve asked.
Skye nodded.
"She and her family have already been looked into it. There is nothing that connects her to us in any way. Whatever her issue is, it's unknown," Steve said.
"Oh, I didn't realize you looked into her," Skye said.
"Of course I did," Steve said.
"Sorry, Dad," she said.
Steve nodded and set her phone back on the bedside table.
"No more staying up late on your phone. Ten p.m. plugged in. If you end up falling asleep in class because you have been on your phone late again, your phone will be in my room at night. Clear?" Steve asked.
"Clear," Skye said
"I'm going to let you rest," Steve said before he left the room.
Skye took her phone and quickly texted Lila. "Almost fell asleep in class today twice. My dad was called, and I had to explain why I was so tired. You might want to try and get to your parents before he does."
Lila texted her back. "Okay, thanks for letting me know."
Skye put her phone down before turning over and closing her eyes.
Steve went down to the training room where he met with Sam. The two of them trained together for a couple of hours.
When they went upstairs dinner was about to start.
Steve looked at Skye. "You get a good nap?"
Skye nodded.
"Were you tired after school?" Nat asked.
"Yeah, I didn't sleep well," Skye said.
"Because she was up late on her phone," Steve said.
Yelena smirked. "Talking to Tucker?"
"No," Skye said, blushing a bit.
"Leave her alone," Nat told her younger sister.
"Who were you talking to that late?" Pepper asked.
"Lila," Skye said.
"The two of them took it upon themselves to try and figure out why that girl set Skye up for shoplifting," Steve said.
Most of the adults at the table just shook their heads.
"Not my fault no one told me it was already looked into," Skye mumbled.
Steve gave her a disapproving look, and Skye shoved a piece of broccoli into her mouth.
"Halloween is in a few weeks. Morgan, you know what you want to dress up as?" Wanda asked the young girl, trying to help the attention get off Skye.
"Ariel!" Morgan said excitedly.
"We are going this weekend to try and find her a costume," Pepper said.
"Skye, are you planning on dressing up?" Nat asked.
"There is a dance at the school. Some sort of costume is a must if you want to attend. My friends and I are trying to come up with a group costume," Skye said.
"For four?" Nat asked.
Skye nodded.
"Be Disney princesses like me!" Morgan said.
"It's one of the ideas we have had," Skye said with a smile.
When dinner was finished, Steve started to help clear up. Skye went back to her room to finish homework, and everyone else went off to do various things.
"You let Clint know what his daughter was up to late last night?" Pepper asked.
"I did," Steve said. "But I think Skye got to Lila first because she told him before I did."
Pepper chuckled. "I probably would have done the same as a teenager."
"I expected her to. I gave Skye a chance to get to Lila first," Steve said. "I figured I'd want to hear it from Skye if roles were reversed."
Pepper nodded.
When clean up was done Steve went and knocked on Skye's door.
"Yes?" Skye said.
Steve went in and saw her sitting at her desk doing her homework.
"I know, I shouldn't have been looking it up regardless of it I knew you had or not," Skye said, quickly trying to cover her bases.
Steve smiled. "No, you shouldn't have, but that's not what I'm here to talk to you about."
"Oh, okay. What is it?" Skye asked.
"Dr. Strange is coming in a couple of days. He has been off-world since before we met you. He is coming here to meet you," Steve said.
"Oh, okay," Skye said.
"Do you know who he is?" Steve asked.
"I've heard the name," Skye said.
"He has spent a lot of time learning about mystic arts and the multi-verse. Because of that, he has spent a lot of time in different timelines. He might have some knowledge about your abilities from another timeline. He might be able to help us all understand more about it," Steve said.
Skye nodded. "Okay."
"How's the homework coming?" he asked.
"About half done," Skye said.
"Okay, I'll let you finish," he said as he left her room.
Skye finished her homework before she took a shower and got ready for bed. When she was dressed in her pajamas she went into the kitchen and filled up a kettle to make some tea.
Yelena came into the kitchen as the kettle started to whistle.
Skye smiled at her. "Do you want some?" she asked as she poured the boiling water into a mug with a tea bag.
"I would love some," Yelena said, grabbing a mug and a tea bag from the cupboard and held it out for Skye.
Skye filled the mug with hot water before setting the kettle back on the stove.
"Thank you," Yelena said.
Skye nodded, grabbed her own mug from the counter, and went to sit at the table.
Yelena joined her, and they sipped their tea in silence.
"Are you angry with me?" Yelena asked, breaking the silence.
"No, why would I be?" Skye asked, confused.
"I embarrassed you at dinner?" Yelena asked.
Skye chuckled. "No, it's not like I think anyone here doesn't know about Tucker at this point."
Yelena smiled. "This is true. You haven't been training with Wanda lately I have noticed."
"Mhm, going to be training with someone else for the time being," Skye said.
"How come?" Yelena asked.
"Long story," Skye said.
Yelena smirked. "Did you give her a hard time and she got frustrated and quit?"
Skye chuckled, "No. She is the one who screwed up."
Yelena tilted her head.
"As I said, long story," Skye said.
Steve came into the kitchen. "You should head to bed soon, Skye."
Skye looked at him. "It's still pretty early."
"Yes, and I think you need an early night after last night," Steve said.
"But I took a nap this afternoon," Skye said.
"Skyler, don't argue with me," Steve said.
"Fine," Skye said, reluctantly giving in.
"Thank you," Steve said. "What are you two talking about?"
"She is avoiding telling me the full story about why she is not training with Wanda right now," Yelena said.
"Ah, well, her choice," Steve said.
"When do I start training with whomever you have decided," Skye said.
"It will be me, and tomorrow if you would like," Steve said.
Skye nodded.
"And probably will be training some with Dr. Strange while he is here so he can see what you can do," Steve said.
Skye nodded again.
"You will get to show off," Yelena said.
"Yeah," Skye said with a small smile.
Steve tilted his head. "You are okay with that, right?"
"Yeah, if he can help me I'm all for it," Skye said before she finished her tea.
She got up and put her cup in the sink. "I'm going to go to bed unless you changed your mind about that?" She asked with an innocent smile.
"Good night," Steve said kissing her head and sending her off.
"Night," Skye said to both her dad and Yelena before going back to her room for the night.
