"No not there." Makayla screeched at her Dad. "Over there." She pointed at the opposite wall. "She needs to see it when she comes in."

"Okay." Adam hung the streamers and balloons where Mack pointed. "Anything else?"

"Did you pick up the cake?"

"Ummmm Bumble Bee you were in the car with me, remember?"

She slapped her own forehead dramatically. "Oh I forgot, I'm just so excited." She clapped her hands and jumped a little. "Are you excited?"

"Best day ever." He high-fived his daughter. "Now, what's next?"

"Chips in a bowl, beer in the fridge, heat up the chicken fingers and get some ice."

"Beer is always in the fridge and we are not having chicken fingers." Adam blew up the last of the balloons. Makayla was perhaps a little too au fait with his football watching afternoons with Kevin and Dante. "We are going out for dinner."

"Somewhere nice?"

He used the last of the balloons and the tape to stick up the banner. "Yes indeed, so how about you go get changed and we will go pick Mum up."

While Makayla was getting changed he grabbed a quick shower, put on some suit pants and a button down shirt and left a card on her pillow. Quickly throwing a couple of outfits and shoes in a bag for Kim and he knew better than to only take one choice and try and dictate what she'd want to wear. If it was his choice it would be some hot, short flashy number and it probably wasn't appropriate for tonight.

He bustled Makayla into the car. "We forgot the cake?" she suddenly panicked when they were almost at the District. "Dad, we forgot the cake."

"That's for later when we are at home."

"Oh that's right, you told me that. Sorry." She sighed. "It's just all so very exciting isn't it?"

Adam laughed. "Sure is Bumblebee, sure is."

He helped her out of the car and she bolted for the front steps and bounded up them. By the time Adam arrived she was chatting Platt's ear off and Platt looked like she had all the time in the world for her.

"How'd you go?" Adam nodded at Platt.

"All ready." Platt leant back down to Makayla. "Head on upstairs, I think your Mom would love a hug from you."

Adam knocked on the desk on his way past and Platt briefly touched his hand and smiled. They'd been planning this for weeks and Platt hadn't been surprised when Adam approached her early on, he had so much confidence that it would go the way everyone wanted and she had been happy to help.

Makayla was swinging on her mother's chair when Adam made it upstairs while Kim was in Voight's office. "Uncle Kevin, what do you have to call mom now? Do you call her Sir?"

"Ummm no." He chuckled. "I call her Ma'am."

"Dad calls her Ma'am all the time, like when he's trying to get a kiss."

"Okay Bumblebee." Adam pressed his index finger against his lips. "Shhhh."

The amount of stuff that Kevin found out about from Mack made them blush. She noticed everything and talked a lot, encouraged by Kevin most of the time. Even though he ribbed them both about it constantly he did remind them that all she ever talked about was how happy she was at home with her parents.

"By the way McQueen, you are looking as beautiful as ever." Kevin winked at Mack.

"Well, you know you have to dress up for parties, and we are having a party. Are you coming?"

He assured her he would not miss it for the world. Kevin had approached Adam the moment they knew it might happen and told him he needed to do something and was pleasantly surprised to find out it was all 'sorted'.

"Need some help?" Kevin asked. "You don't strike me as the party planning type. I mean popcorn & chicken fingers ain't gonna cut it."

His response was simple. "Platt."

"uh huh." Kev nodded. "Got it."

Kim's face was already alight when she came out of Voight's office and it lit up even more seeing Mack and Adam. "Mom." Mack flew off her chair. "I'm so proud of you. You did it." She screeched. "You did it."

"I did." She hugged her daughter and then reached out for Adam's hand. "We all did it."

Throwing her a quick salute before joining in the family hug. "Congratulations Detective Burgess." Adam pressed a quick kiss to her cheek. "Oh, am I allowed to do that?"

"Today only." Voight smiled. "Then it's back to business."

"You can kiss Mom whenever you want, that's why you are getting married." Makayla quipped. "Among other things, although you never told me what those other things are."

"So anyway…." Adam was desperate to change that subject. "There are some clothes in the bag, Mom's gonna get changed and we are going to celebrate."

"I bet Dad picked out something nice, he didn't show me." Makayla was beaming. "I picked my dress myself." She spun around. "Do you like it?"

It wasn't one she had seen before and she looked at Adam. "What?" He shrugged. "I think we knocked it out of the park."

She agreed and grabbed the bag that Adam had bought with him. "I'll just get changed."

"Need a hand?" Adam winked and Kim rolled her eyes.

She wasn't surprised to find two of Adam's favorite dresses. A black halter neck dress and a floaty floral number. She really had no idea why the floral one was a favorite of his, it wasn't particularly revealing which was his usual style, but he liked this one and so that's the one she chose.

The look on his face was a little nostalgic and she had to ask. "Why this dress?"

Adam just smiled and shrugged. "Come on, we'll be late." He ushered her and Makayla down the stairs. Kevin had already left, along with Kiana and Dante but Voight was still in his office. Platt whistled as they passed the front desk and waved at Makayla as she giggled. The poor girl was bursting at the seams trying to keep the secret.

"Where are we going?" Kim waited until Adam had closed her front door and turned to Makayla while he made his way around to the driver's side. "You can tell me."

"For dinner, Dad didn't tell me."

"Because she can't keep a secret." Adam heard it as he opened the door. "Just relax and enjoy the ride. Tell us about your highlight of the day."

They did it every night at dinner, everyone got to say what their highlight was.

"My highlight is right now." Kim smiled. "In my car, with my loves, going out for dinner."

"Not getting being a Detective?" Makayla gasped. "That's my highlight."

"Mine too." Adam agreed. He squeezed Kim's leg and winked at her. She got it, he was toey. He'd told her this morning before she left home that they were going to have a raunchy celebration as only they could later on. Adam was far more confident than she was that she was going to pass and refused to entertain the idea that he would be cheering her up later on, not celebrating.

Kim squealed when he pulled into the parking lot of Green Street Smoked Meats. It was one of the places that was on her go to list but they had never made it there. Adam had been there when she was in New Orleans at the conference for the birthday of one of his old school buddies and she had been a little salty about it.

"Are you trying to make it up to me?"

"Yes." He switched off the ignition and checked his phone. He had already set up a message to fire off quickly as soon as they arrived, all he had to do was push send which he did as he got out of the car and then slipped his phone back into his pocket. "I'm just improving my chances. How I'm doin?"

Kim indicated with her hand that it was still 50/50 but she did like his choice of restaurant. Makayla slipped her hand into Kim's hand and waited for Adam to join them so they could walk hand in hand into the restaurant. She was bouncing around like she needed to pee.

Adam held the door open for both of them before announcing their arrival. "Burgess Party."

"Detective Burgess." Makayla corrected him. "My Mom got a new job today."

"Did she just?" The Concierge winked at Makayla. "Best we find the best table in the house then."

Adam let Kim and Makayla go first as they followed the Concierge through the restaurant to the private dining room so he could stand back and enjoy her reaction. As they slid open the doors Kim stopped dead in her tracks and gasped. The room was full of people and it was hard to take them all in through her tears.

Voight, Platt, Atwater and the rest of her team were beaming happily.

If that wasn't enough of a surprise she also noticed her sister and niece clapping happily and her previous partner Julie Tay and a few of her academy colleagues, a couple of parents from school who they had grown close to and Makayla's babysitters. They were part of their family now. Makayla's uncle and aunt had also joined them and of course Jordan Atwater who Makayla had made a beeline for. Kevin had also bought along Val, much to everyone, bar Adam and Kim's surprise. They knew that Kevin had been seeing her for a little while and were happy for him.

Adam's sister and Sam were also there with Adam's Mom. Adam and his mother's relationship wasn't perfect, in fact it was somewhat strained but they were both trying to change that.

She turned to Adam, tears streaming down her face and buried her head briefly into his shoulder as he wrapped her up in a hug and whispered in her ear. "You didn't think I'd let this moment pass without throwing a party did you?" He chuckled softly. "Congratulations Darlin', I'm so proud of you. We are all proud of you."

"I can't believe you did this. How?"

He kissed her cheek and told her to go enjoy her moment. Adam just wanted to have her time in the spotlight. They appreciated every happy moment they had these days. Sailing as close as they both had to the other side made you realise that you had to live all the good times to give you the strength to fight through the bad.

There was only one person missing and they arrived shortly after.

Kim was talking to a couple of her Academy friends that she hadn't seen for months and had her back to the door so didn't see him arrive. She had spent a good half hour talking to her sister and getting hugs from Zoe and was working her way around the room.

"Detective Burgess, it's about damn time."

Kim swung around and squealed in delight. "Oh my god. What are you doing here?"

"You'd think I'd miss my one of my favorite partners becoming a Detective in the best unit in Chicago." Antonio held his arms out wide for a hug. "Congratulations Kim."

"It's so good to see you." Kim stood back and looked him up and down. "You look amazing. Puerto Rico looks good on you."

"It's the sun." He squeezed your hands. "When your other half called to say this was happening I booked a flight that day. I knew you'd do it."

"Adam called you?" Kim was a little surprised. They'd had such a rough few months before Antonio left.

"He sure did." He watched Kim as she glanced at Adam who was off talking to some people he didn't know. "He's proud of you, he always has been. Now, I need a drink. Do you have a drink? I thought this would be at Molly's. Oh and congratulations on your engagement. It's been a big year huh?"

"The biggest." Kim hugged him again. "I'm so happy to see you. I like to think that some of the cop in you rubbed off on me. I miss you, you taught me so much."

"You've done pretty well without me." Antonio kissed her cheek. "Go enjoy, I'm going to catch up with the rest of the mob."

It was the perfect night, completely unexpected and while she would've been happy at home with her little family, celebrating with her team and friends and family was a dream come true. Nicole and Zoe were staying in town and promised to come over for breakfast in the morning. Kim wanted them to get to know Makayla and spend some time with her. It was important to them that she got to know her family.

She found her way back to Adam a couple of times throughout the night, just to touch him. It had been such an intense few weeks and he'd been supportive while doing the heavy lifting at home with Mack. She couldn't lie, at times it got a little tense. They were both tired, busy at work and trying to be everything to everyone. It got to the point where Adam had to tell Kim to take a breath because she wasn't being a good mom, or partner and that went down like a lead balloon. He was right though, for a little while she needed to be selfish and both him and Mack had to take a backseat.

Now they were out the other side and she wanted, no she needed to get the balance back.

Everyone offered to look after Makayla for the night but they both wanted to get her home and spend some time together and Makayla was just as excited about what was waiting at home as she was for the dinner party. Afterall she had made Adam decorate the place and they had cake. This was their life now and Adam had planned a weekend away down the track for them both.

"Close your eyes." Makayla insisted as she grabbed hold of her Mom's arm before Adam unlocked the front door. "Nice and tight. No peeking."

Adam slipped past them and got ready to take a photo as Makayla told her she could look now. "Surprise. Happy Detective Day." She shouted and jumped up and down. In car home she almost fell asleep but was up and about now. "We love you."

Unsurprisingly Kim burst into tears. "Oh, this is amazing."

"I made you a card and we bought cake. Just for us."

Adam offered to go get their cake while Makayla presented Kim with her card, which bought more tears.

'I am so proud of you Mom, you've been the best Mom, I am lucky you found me. I hope you liked your party. Love you forever.'

They sat on the floor, crossed legged around the coffee table and had cake and Makayla asked what it meant now that she was a Detective.

"I get to boss Dad around."

"You already do that at home, now she can do it at work too." Adam scoffed. "And more money."

"So we can go to Disneyland?" Makayla was as quick as whip. Every chance she got, she was asking to go to Disneyland ever since a friend from school had gone with her family on the last school break. It was all she wanted… in the 'whole wide world' … apparently.

"Maybe." Kim gave her a hug. "We will see what we can do."

Getting her into bed was a struggle, the second wave hit with the sugar rush from all the frosting on the cake and she wanted to stay up and help plan their Disneyland trip that Makayla seemed to think was now a given as her Mom and Dad didn't say no, so in her mind that meant yes.

"So? Disneyland?" Kim had taken Makayla to bed while Adam cleaned up the cake dishes and put the left over in the fridge. He promised Makayla that he would take it into the District tomorrow because she had told Atwater that they were having cake and he was sad to miss out. He was still in the kitchen when she came back.

"Not sure this family is ready for a road trip." Adam laughed. They had a weekend away recently and it had been chaos from the get go.

"I am, I am so ready." Kim clapped. "I love Disneyland. I think you'd look cute in little Mickey Mouse ears."

Standing behind Adam as he washed the last of the dishes she slid her arms around his waist and rested her head in the middle of his back. "Thank you for tonight and for everything."

"You are welcome." He pulled the plug and wiped his hands on the towel before tossing it over the wet dishes. Turning around he waited until Kim snuggled in closer and Adam wrapped his arms around her tightly. "I am a proud hubby to be."

"Do you think Kevin is okay?"

"Why wouldn't he be?"

"I remember he talked about taking the exam."

"He's got so much going on with the building and his Dad, honestly Kim, he doesn't have a problem. He's a proud brother. He keeps telling me that it was your year on patrol with him that set you up for success."

Kim chuckled. Kevin had told her that as well. "And thank you for calling Antonio, that was such a nice surprise. I know you and him weren't on best terms."

Adam leant back and looked down at Kim. "It wasn't about me."

"Almost all my old partners." She smiled cheekily and knew exactly what was coming.

"All you old partners, except Al. Predators aren't partners." Adam took the bait. "Now, Detective, soon to be Mrs Ruzek, Burgess, let's go to bed. I've got plans."

Kim took his offered hand and followed him into their bedroom. On the bed was two gifts and an envelope. She reached for the envelope first and pulled out a card.

'You've been my hero, my inspiration, my anchor, & my strength since the day we met. I am in awe of you every day….You've earned this, you deserve this and so much more, you've got this & we've got you. Makayla and I will always be your safe harbour. My love for you has no expiration date…. xxx Adam xxx'

"That's beautiful Adam, thank you." She sobbed. "Thank you for you."

"I meant every word." He sat down beside her on the bed and handed her the first gift. Inside the small box was a pair of diamond drop earrings. She had pointed them out to Makayla a few weeks ago when they were talking about the wedding and he'd overheard the conversation and asked Makayla to show him which ones they were.

"You're so sneaky." She pressed her lips against his with one hand clutching her new earrings and the other on his cheek. "How did you know?"

He tapped his temple with his finger. "I'm a good cop and I know people."

Kim snorted. "By people you mean Mack."

"She's my CI."

Kim pretended to be shocked. "Mine too. She's playing us."

"Oh baby, I know." Adam handed her the second gift and winked. "This is for us."

It did not surprise her one bit when the box contained a set of fluffy handcuffs, a lacy teddy, stockings, suspenders, a police hat and badge which he had stuck a piece of tape over Police Officer and written Detective.

"You want me to wear this now?"

"Yes Ma'am."

Kim looked thoughtful for a moment while Adam looked at her longingly, she kissed him hard and fast, sucking and nipping at his bottom lip to really get them going before she suddenly pulled back and laughed before grabbed her robe and the outfit and disappeared into the bathroom. When she came back into the bedroom Adam was sitting on the bed completely naked. She dropped the robe and swung the handcuffs around in her hand.

Adam held up his hands. "Arrest me Detective Burgess?"
