AmeBel: Painful Silence
Bella smiled when she returned home. Alfred was sitting on the couch, his phone in his hand.
"Hey, Al," Bella said. "How was your day?"
Alfred looked towards her for a moment before he started typing on his phone screen. Bella flinched at the action.
"Is something wrong?" she asked. What could she have done to earn such a response?
Alfred lifted the phone screen to her, and she blinked as she read the message.
My tooth hurts. I can't speak. Could you please call the dentist and make an appointment for me?
"Weren't you at the dentist the other day?" Bella asked.
Alfred grimaced, before he typed something else on his phone. He then held it out towards Bella.
I think the filling from the other day got loose, and now it's digging into my gum.
Bella flinched at the description. She nodded and pulled out her own phone. She looked for the dentist's number and immediately dialled.
"Hello, I would like to make an appointment for my fiancé, Alfred Jones," Bella said. "He says that the filling he got the other day got loose and is digging into his gum. He can't even talk right now. He needs to type on the phone."
"Oh dear," the receptionist said. "Hold on for a moment. This sounds like an emergency. I'll see what I can do."
Bella waited for a while. She turned to Alfred.
"Will you be able to eat dinner?" she asked.
Alfred flinched and shook his head. Bella grimaced in response.
"Okay," the receptionist said on the other end of the line. "You can come through right now. The doctor is just finishing up with a patient."
"Really?" Bella asked. "That's fast."
"Well, this is certainly an emergency. If this is left for too long, it can cause a lot of damage."
"Okay, thank you." Bella hung up and turned to Alfred. "We can go right now."
Alfred smiled, before he flinched. Bella gave him a sympathetic look as she hugged him.
"I'm sorry you have to go through this," she said. "I'll make something extra tasty for you, as soon as you can enjoy it properly."
This happened to me a few years ago, where a filling came loose and then jabbed itself into my gum and just stayed there. It was really painful, where even the friction caused by the air when I spoke was too painful. I literally communicated using screens. To give an idea how bad it was, it hurt more than when I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I didn't have to pay the additional fee when I had it fixed, since the dentist said that it was his fault.
