LuxHong: Motivation

"Remember, there will be a test on Friday, covering everything from Units 8 and 9," Mr Kirkland, the English teacher, said. "Study hard, as this will help you with the exam."

Leon rolled his eyes. He never really studied for tests, and his average was in the sixties. He didn't see the reason why he would have to bother. Besides, a new series released on Netflix that he had been waiting to binge.

The bell rang, and everyone packed up. It was the last class on a Monday, and Leon couldn't wait to go home.

"Hey Leon," Henri said as he threw his arm around Leon's waist.

Leon smiled. He and Henri had been dating for the last three months, and he honestly could say that he couldn't be happier.

"So, do you want to come with me to the library?" Henri asked. "We can have a study date."

"Why?" Leon asked. "I mean, I wouldn't mind a date, but why does it have to be a study date?"

"…You did hear what Mr Kirkland said about the test, right?" Henri sighed. "You never take school seriously. I'm worried about you."

"What's the big deal? I mean, it's just an English test. It's not like it requires a lot of brain power."

"What did you get for your last test?"

"Fifty-eight… I still passed."

"But you're barely holding on. You can't keep doing this." Henri pulled away from him and crossed his arms. "That's it. If you get sixty or less for this test, then I won't hug or kiss you for a week."

Leon's eyes widened. He took a step closer to Henri, who only took a step back.

"But…" Leon said.

"Do you want to go with me to the library for a study date or not?" Henri asked. "We can make out for ten minutes when we're done. It might be the last you get for a while."

Leon's jaw dropped. He couldn't believe that Henri actually said something like this. He closed his eyes and sighed.

"Fine," he said.

"Leon, do you want to watch a movie with me?"

Leon's gaze flickered over towards his door, where his sister Mei was standing. He turned back to his work.

"I can't," Leon said. "I'm studying for a test."

"Since when do you study?" Mei asked.

"Since Henri said he won't hug or kiss me for a week if I get a sixty or less for the English test on Friday."

"You're aware that it's only Monday, right?"

"I'm not taking any chances."

"And you know that it's English, right?"

"I'm not taking any chances."

Leon didn't even look up, but he heard his door close. He sighed. Even though he would have loved to watch a movie, he had no intention of going an entire week without Henri's affection. Even weekends without him were too hard, rare enough as they were.

His door opened again and Leon groaned. Didn't Mei get the message? He turned around, but it wasn't Mei. It was Yao.

"Mei told me that you were studying for a test," Yao said. "I needed to see it for myself."

"I'm only doing this because Henri said he wouldn't hug or kiss me for a week if my marks aren't high enough," Leon said.

"I should remember to make him something. He likes cookies, right?"

Leon glared at his brother, who only smirked in response.

"It's about time you start taking things seriously," Yao said. "And I should really commend him on his creativity."

"You're not going anywhere near him," Leon growled.

It was the next Tuesday, and Leon was drumming his fingers. They were going to receive their tests back, and he needed to make sure that he got more than sixty. He'd never studied so hard before, and he didn't want it all to be for nothing.

He jumped when Henri grabbed his hand, and the taller boy smiled before squeezing his hand. At least Henri seemed to be confident in Leon's ability to pass the test. He hadn't realised how complicated English actually could be.

Mr Kirkland handed out the test papers, commenting on a few students' results. Finally, he arrived at Leon's desk, and the latter tensed.

"I was quite surprised," Mr Kirkland said. "You almost made it. But I'm sure you'll manage next time."

Leon's stomach dropped. Did he fail? And then Mr Kirkland gave the paper back and Leon's jaw dropped. He got a ninety-nine.

"Well done!" Henri said. "I knew you could do it."

Leon just sagged in relief. He had never got such a high score before.

"Maybe I should do this for all your tests," Henri mused.

"No," Leon said. "Please, don't."

The prompt is: 'Person A is really lazy and doesn't like to do their work or study so they end up with a C or lower on every test. Person B knows this and tells Person A that if they get a C or lower on their next test, they won't hug or kiss Person A for a whole week. Person A studies like hell and aces the next test.'

It's also a bit ironic that I chose English as the subject that needs to be studied for. I was pretty strong in English, and the only part I actually studied for was literature. The grammar I would skim. The opposite was true for science. That was not my best subject. The only time I excelled in it was in ninth grade. After the first term, when our teacher was handing out the papers, he stopped at my desk and asked me what I did. I panicked that I might have failed epically, only to see the 100 on the page. My jaw dropped. He later explained that, out of more than a hundred students, only about six of us got over 80.
