Reckless
Chapter 15
Toni didn't say goodbye to him. But Spencer assumed that she must have left the party when she disappeared into the house with her son and didn't come back out. He was surprised to find her resting in a chair with her son in her lap while he was searching for one of Penelope's lost cell phones. Everyone that wasn't playing poker in the backyard was gone, except for him. And all of the parents in the group took their children home some time ago.
Toni's son was curled up in her lap, covered with someone's discarded suit jacket. His head was nestled against her shoulder, his face buried in the crook of her neck. She had one arm wrapped around him. One of Rossi's true crime books was in her other hand. Toni flipped the page with her thumb, her eyes scanning over the words. Spencer could tell she was engrossed in the book, because she didn't hear him approach.
"What are you still doing here?," he whispered, moving close enough to dip his head down and check how much of the book she'd managed to work through.
"He's pretty good," Toni said, her lips curling up in a soft smile as she held up the book in her hand. Once she set it down, she used both hands to adjust the way her son was resting in her lap. His dark hair was rumpled and he was sleeping deeply enough that his slender body had gone almost completely limp. "We rode over with Luke," Toni explained, trying to fight back a heavy yawn. "He's still out back playing poker."
"Maybe he should stop playing and drive you home," Spencer suggested. His face crinkled up into an expression of distaste. Everyone that was still playing poker out back was drunk. Too drunk to be driving Toni and her sleeping son home, at least in his opinion.
"He's on a winning streak," Toni said, adding a soft shake of her head. "I didn't want to ruin his fun... I was going to call a cab, but then I got sucked into Rossi's book." She reached over, opening her purse with her one free before she started sifting through it. "I should probably call one now, or at least text my cousin. She's probably wondering where we are."
"Just text her," Spencer said. "I'll borrow one of Rossi's cars and drive you home."
Toni parted her lips. For a moment, Spencer thought she might object to his offer. From the moment he met her, he could tell she was used to taking care of herself. But Toni glanced down at the sleeping child in her arms and yawned again. Then she nodded. "I'd really appreciate that, thank you."
Spencer watched with some concern as Toni lowered her son down onto the backseat of the car. "Are you sure he shouldn't be in a car seat or something?," he asked. He didn't know much about child rearing. But it seemed like JJ was always strapping her kids into some sort of safety device. A million statistics about cars and kids and crashes were flashing through his brain like rapid fire.
"Why?," Toni asked. She covered the boy with Spencer's suit jacket before she stood up. There was a smile playing at the corners of her lips when she reached for his hand. "Are you planning to crash?"
"No!," Spencer huffed. He didn't drive often. But that didn't mean he didn't know how to do it safely.
The slight offense he took to her teasing comment made Toni laugh as she rubbed her thumb across the back of his hand. "I used to ride in the back of my brother's pickup truck all the time," she told him. "It's not very far from here to my place. Just drive slow." Toni raised herself up into her tiptoes. Her body pressed against his as her breath ghosted across the skin of his neck as she whispered into his ear. "I know you like to move slow."
The innuendo in her voice made it clear that she was no longer talking about driving. Spencer reached for her, intending to pull Toni into his arms. But his hands only grazed her body as she slipped past him. She glanced back with a teasing smile as she pulled the passenger door open and lowered herself into the car.
Toni didn't make any attempt at conversation as Spencer drove her out of the affluent neighborhood Rossi lived in and across town to the address she provided. From the relaxed posture of her body, Spencer guessed that Toni was fighting back the urge to fall asleep herself. The interior of the car was quiet. But it wasn't an awkward silence. Toni let her head loll against the headrest. But her heavy eyes were still open. She watched Spencer as he drove, smiling when he glanced over to meet her gaze.
The scenery around them changed quickly, giving way from large manicured lawns to smaller townhomes, and eventually to a somewhat sketchy looking city street. Spencer noticed a group of men openly engaging in a drug deal on the corner. Another block down, there were a few scantily clad women hanging out near an after hours city bus stop.
"Is this the right address?," Spencer asked, his voice filled with concern. "This isn't a very nice neighborhood."
"I know," Toni said. The tone in her voice made it obvious that he'd embarrassed her with his comment, which wasn't his intent. Spencer immediately felt bad for judging her housing situation. "It's okay," Toni promised. "I know it's bad. When I got divorced, I had to move out in a hurry. This was all I could find. I've been looking for a new place, but you know how it is in DC. Everything's so expensive."
"Let me walk you up," Spencer offered. Not only did he want to make sure Toni and her son got into her apartment safely, he was also hoping she might invite him inside. He was eager to get her in his arms. And even if all they did was sleep, he still wanted to be alone with her. Toni glanced out the car window. For a moment, he thought she was going to acquiesce to his request. But then she shook her head.
"My cousin Lucia lives with me. She's the one that takes care of Romeo when I'm gone. She's agoraphobic. And she's scared of men she doesn't know. It's a long story…" Toni reached across the seat, stroking her hand over Spencer's hair. She tucked a stray strand behind his ear, letting her hand linger along his jawline before she pulled it back. "Let me carry Romeo up and put him in bed. Then I'll come back out. We can sit in the car and talk."
Spencer nodded his agreement to this. After the way she whispered into his ear before she climbed into the car, he had other things on his mind besides talking. But the truth was, a real conversation between them was long overdue. He sat quietly, feeling the soft pull in the center of his chest as he watched Toni lift her son into her arms and disappear into her apartment building with him still wrapped in Spencer's jacket. It seemed to take forever for her to return. When she did, she was wearing his suit jacket over her dress.
Toni climbed back into the car, smoothing her hair away from her face once she shut and locked her door. She said she was coming back so they could talk. So Spencer was unsure what he ought to do when she leaned her head against the headrest without saying a word. Her dark eyes were fixed on him. The heat in her gaze was creating a wonderfully thick tension between them.
"Did you want to talk?," Spencer finally asked.
Toni's smile widened slightly. "I think we should," she agreed. "But I'm not sure what to say." She reached for his hand, catching it between hers and holding it there. His skin was soft against hers. She slid her palm against his, thinking about how good it felt when he slipped his fingers inside her. "You always have all the answers," Toni said. She lifted his hand, opening it before she pressed a kiss into the center of his palm. "I was hoping you'd know what to do."
If they wanted to keep working together, the best thing for them to do was leave each other alone. But Toni knew that was no longer an option. At least not for her. Not that it ever was. She felt the magnetic pull of her body towards Spencer's from the moment she saw him again. It was a total delusion on her part to think she'd be able to control herself around him.
"You're worried that us being together will cause problems at work?," Spencer confirmed. His face turned pensive as he considered this very real possibility. Toni nodded, her hand tightening around his and then relaxing as she breathed a sigh of relief. For someone that vowed never to trust another man as long as she lived, her total faith in Spencer's ability to resolve her worries made her want to laugh. "I like working with you," he finally said. It didn't stop her worries. But it made her smile. "I think we were great together," he added. "We identified the unsub and stopped him before he could hurt anyone else."
Toni couldn't deny Spencer's logic. They did work well together. But that might not always be the case. "What if we're fighting and then we have to work on a case together?," she asked.
"Why would we fight?," Spencer countered. "I don't want to fight with you."
Toni allowed the soft bubble of happy laughter to escape her. If she didn't know better, she'd be sure Spencer was putting on an act. He was so sweet to her. She wasn't sure if she deserved it. But it still felt good to be treated with compassion and kindness for once.
"When people are in a relationship, they fight," Toni said, leaning forward to soften her words with a kiss.
"Are we?," he asked. "...in a relationship, I mean?"
"I don't know," Toni admitted. When Spencer asked, she realized that she wanted to be with him. She wanted that more than she wanted anything else in the world. And after seeing him with her son, she was slowly starting to warm up to the idea of having him in their lives. "Is that what you want?," Toni asked. "When we're at work, we'd still have to pretend we're not together. At least for a while…"
"I don't care if people know or not," he declared. "I just want to be with you." Spencer paused. Toni saw him furrow his brows for a moment before he continued. His hand turned, tightening around hers. "I don't want to see you on another man's arm."
"That's not… It's not…," Toni fumbled for the right words. "There's nothing going on between me and Luke. I just…" She took a deep breath as she let the feel of Spencer's hand around hers calm her nerves. "He's my best friend. I don't want to lose him. But I don't have feelings for him, not like I do for you."
"If he really cares about you," Spencer said. "He'll accept that." The total resolution in his tone gave Toni pause. Spencer was definitely speaking from experience. It only took her a moment to guess who he might be referring to.
"JJ?," Toni asked, though from her tone it was clear she knew the answer even before Spencer nodded his head. The information didn't come as a shock. It was obvious that Spencer and JJ were close. Toni almost asked Spencer if anything physical ever happened between them. But she quickly decided that she'd rather not know if it did. She could already feel herself gripping Spencer's hand a little tighter as she compared herself to their blonder, slimmer coworker in her mind. Toni knew her sudden rush of jealousy was unnecessary. But that didn't stop her from feeling it. Or from acting on it as she leaned across the center divide of the car and captured his lips with hers.
This wasn't the soft whisper of a kiss that they started with the last time. Toni caught the back of Spencer's neck with her hand and claimed his mouth, parting his lips with her tongue. The desire to possess him heated the kiss until he was moaning softly into her mouth. Breaking the kiss, Toni moved her lips along his jawline as he gasped for air. She ran her teeth along the cord of his neck, sucking on the sensitive skin behind his ear as she reached for the growing bulge in his pants.
"Unzip your pants," she whispered. Toni gripped his dick through the fabric, rubbing along the hard length of his erection until she felt his hips buck against her touch.
"Right here?," Spencer confirmed. There was a slight hesitation in his voice as he added, "...in the car?"
Toni's chest moved with the laughter she was doing her very best to hold in. She rubbed her hand over his hardened length again as she whispered into his ear. "Do you want your dick sucked or not?" Toni felt Spencer's body tense as he considered her question. And then he shifted his arms, rushing to unfasten his belt with such speed that this time she was unable to stop a soft giggle from bubbling out of her. As he worked his zipper open, Toni pressed her lips to his again. The kiss was a messy frenzy of lips and tongues, a promise of what was to come when she adjusted her body and leaned forward towards his lap.
Toni gripped the base of his dick with her hand, tugging gently before she reached deeper into his pants and cupped his balls. There was a glistening drop of precum already forming on the tip of his dick. With a decadent flick of her tongue, Toni licked it off. She heard him hiss through his gritted teeth as she gently massaged his balls. Her tongue wet her lips before she parted them, taking the swollen head of his dick into her mouth.
There was no neat and clean way to give good head, at least not in Toni's opinion. She knew the wetter her mouth was, the better it would feel. And her sudden rush of possessive jealousy had her determined to make sure that she would be the only woman on Spencer's mind going forward. She moved her head down until his dick hit the back of her throat. Holding it there, Toni fought back her gag reflex as she let her throat muscles convulse around the head of his dick until her mouth filled with saliva. Pulling back, she spit everything that collected in her mouth onto the head of his dick, using her hand to spread it down over his erection. Toni repeated that movement one more time, making sure he was well slicked before she really started moving her mouth. She took as much of him into her mouth as she could, following her lips with her hand so that his entire dick was being touched.
Spencer's chest was heaving against her shoulder. Toni could feel his hand on her back, fisting into the fabric of his jacket. He was breathing hard, fighting against the low groans that were escaping from between his lips. Toni paused her ministrations, letting his swollen dick slide from between her lips with a wet pop before she reached behind her own head and caught him by the wrist. His hips bucked up instinctively towards her mouth as she guided his hand to the back of her head. Toni flicked her eyes up towards Spencer's face before she spoke. His eyes were shut, the expression on his face was almost pained with pleasure. "Show me how you like it," she encouraged.
As she wrapped her lips back around his erection, his hand rested limp against the back of her head at first. Toni teased him a little, licking at the head of his dick and pulling her head back when his hips rose up towards her mouth. She moaned when she finally felt his hand press down on the back of her head, forcing his dick deeper inside her mouth. The vibration in her throat added a new layer of pleasure to the act. One that made him fist his hand into her hair. From that point, there was no more teasing. Toni used her hand and her mouth, letting him control the speed and force of his thrusts until his body dissolved with a hard shaking spasm of bliss. Hot spurts of pleasure coated her throat until she finally hard to jerk back and swallow in order to gasp for air.
Toni flopped back against her seat, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand as she watched Spencer attempt to regain control over his bodily functions. Even in the dappled streetlight, she could tell his face was flushed. His hair was tousled up from all the kissing they did before she reached down his pants. He was limp against the seat. Toni wasn't sure how long he might have sat there if a random crackhead hadn't knocked on her window to ask for change. Toni shooed him away through the glass as Spencer fumbled his pants back on.
"It's late," Toni said, letting her eyes rake over the long line of his body. "I think I better go upstairs and get myself to bed." The low steady thrum of heat between her legs was calling her. She knew it would only take a few well practiced strokes of her fingers and the image of Spencer's face as she blew him before she was coming just as hard as he just did into her mouth.
"Uh… wait… I mean…" Spencer objected to her departure, fumbling his words. "Don't you want me to…"
Toni smiled, amusing by his sudden inability to string a sentence together. She pressed a kiss to her fingertips before reaching over and pressing it to Spencer's stubble covered cheek. "You can owe me one," she promised. Toni reached for the door handle, flashing him a smile as she slipped Spencer's jacket off and into the seat she just vacated. "Call me tomorrow. This time, I'll answer."
