Chapter 13
"So, Enigma is using these poor folks from the community center to do her bidding but how did she get them to… that man killed himself," Kara swallowed and shook her head from her seat in front of Lyla's desk. She, Alex, and Kelly were with Lyla at ARGUS, inside the older woman's office. J'onn broke off his following of Cat Grant to help poor Martin, but M'gann stayed on to make sure the leader of CatCo. was safe.
"She can convince them to do anything – we've seen it, but I agree, this was a whole new level of depravity," Kelly said from a seat next to the desk.
"What will his family be told?" Alex asked, she was seated in between her sister and her girlfriend.
"NCPD has his body and NCFD deployed multiple fire trucks. I have no control over the narrative," Lyla told her. She was seated in her comfortable chair behind the desk. Admittedly, she hadn't used her desk much lately and was glad for the maintenance staff chasing away the spiders and dust. The little voice in the back of her mind wondered why she hadn't been spending time in her sparsely decorated office. She had mounds of paperwork to sift through as the reports from all of ARGUS's operations needed to be reviewed, but Enigma was a higher priority at the moment.
"It's a mess. We need to catch Enigma and now," Kara's anger was rising. This woman had harmed too many people already.
"Look, we've cut off her weapon and Snakebite supply. We've taken out her attempt to get to the mayor. Her plans are in the toilet, so we need to figure out why the CatCo. servers were so important," Lyla said, trying to keep them focused.
"That had to be the backup plan. She could have found out from Miss Grant that the servers were protected that way. So, she kidnaps Martin and makes him do the deed. We need to know what the message for Supergirl was," Alex said.
"By the time, J'onn and Nia are done helping him along with the ARGUS medical team, Martin won't be in any shape to help. He'll be mentally and physically exhausted," Kara pointed out.
"I spoke to J'onn about that, and he said he'd try and see if he could find the message. We have to think that maybe, just maybe, getting to the servers wasn't the end game. Maybe it was getting to you," Lyla pointed out.
"That poor man died for that," the blonde said.
"He'd been tricked. Once he's been properly identified, I will make sure that his family is assisted in any way they can be," the leader of ARGUS promised.
"What about the other man?" Kelly asked.
"He's been delivered to the hospital as an ARGUS prisoner. We've identified him as Ray Johnson. He was working for the city's sanitation department before this," Lyla explained.
"No leads on our mole?" Alex inquired.
"Not yet but my guy will get there," Lyla promised. There was a knock on the door and the leader of ARGUS bid the person to enter.
"Papa Bear, how'd it go?" Kara asked as J'onn entered the room with Nia right behind him.
"Martin should be in the clear. I removed the memories of what happened this afternoon and I found the message. It didn't appear to have any triggering physical conditions, so why he thought he would die for delivering the message from Enigma, I can't explain. Especially since they wanted him to deliver it," J'onn told them.
"Maybe one of the men who was with him was supposed to shoot him after he delivered the message?" Alex wondered.
"Could very well be. Enigma certainly had put the fear of whatever God he believes in, into him. The message was quite clear though," the Martian said.
"What is it?" Kara asked.
"Meet me on the roof of L Corp at ten pm," J'onn said.
"We have to get to Lena. Ten pm is still eight hours away but…" the blonde didn't want to voice it.
"But if Lena's in trouble, then the meeting is a setup," Lyla agreed.
