Chapter 1: The Seal is Now Solved (1):
Tomoko's POV:
"Coming up next is a hit among high school students. It has been at the top of the chart for many weeks."
"What are you doing now," I asked, "taking a spin? I'm so envious of you. You sure know how to relax! It's been two weeks, but nothing has happened." I then checked the calendar. "It's the 13th day today?" Then something goes wrong with my player. "Wait a minute." I try to fix it. "What's the matter?" I then went back to my phone. "Nothing. We'll talk tomorrow. Work hard!" I then hung up. I then heard some laughing and opened the door. "Are you back, Mum?" I then went down the stairs.
...
I saw the TV, and someone left it on, and it was static. Then the lamp started going crazy. The clock was ticking. The phone then rang. I figured it was my mom. I then answered. "Mom!" Nothing. "Mom!" I then got scared. Something was after me. I then ran through the door...
...
I tried to get out, but the door was locked. I then went through another door. Something was then attacking me. "Help! Help..."
Hiroshi's POV:
"My apologies," I said.
"I have waited for a long time," says Mayako.
...
We then went to this diner. "Sorry I was late," I said, "stuff came up."
"You're always saying that," says Mayako.
"But I'm going to try to be on time from now on," I said.
"You're always saying that too," says Mayako.
"That's fair," I said.
We then saw a biker freaking out. I then walked over to him. "Are you okay," I asked. I then saw his face. "Hideichi Iwata?" He was a classmate of mine. I think he's dead! I then called the ambulance.
...
"What do you think that was about," asks Mayako.
"I'm not sure," I said. I couldn't stop thinking about what happened to Hideichi.
"I tried calling his girlfriend, Tomoko, but her mother says... she's dead too," says Mayako.
"That's too much of a coincidence," I said.
"Maybe one of them committed suicide so they can be together," says Mayako.
"Neither of them are the type," I said, "there's something else."
I then turned the TV on. "The so-called 'unusual phenomena' can be categorized into 3 types. They are illusions, hoaxes, and a phenomenon which cannot be explained by science. Apart from deliberate ruses by humans, all other unusual phenomena can be explained by known facts and scientific theories. Mr. Nonomura deems unusual phenomena as non-existent. What about you, Mr. Takayama?"
"I feel that it's just an overbearing view on his part. There are many things in life which cannot be explained scientifically. Mr. Kaneda's analysis on these phenomena is shallow and naive."
"I beg your pardon," asks Mr. Nonomura.
"It's the truth," says Ryūji Takayama. He's another classmate of mine. I don't know how he got on TV. "Curses do exist. In a certain religion, there's been a series of events involving curses."
"What valuable contribution," says Mr. Nonomura, "that's pure superstition!"
"I could even cast a curse on you," says Ryūji, "if I curse that you'll die in three days, you really will die!"
"What's the meaning of this," asks Mr. Nonomura.
"Are you afraid of being cursed," asks Ryūji.
"I think Mr. Nonomura means to say..."
"Really," asks Mr. Nonomura, "show me your powers then. I'll prove you wrong if I stay alive."
"We shall see in three days," says Ryūji.
"As the discussion met with serious disagreements..."
"Ryūji would do anything to get in the spotlight," I said. I then turned the TV off.
...
"Hey, did you catch the news," asks Norihiko.
"Yeah, Ryūji is so full of himself," I said.
"Yeah, but he has great hair," says Mayako.
"I guess," I said, "just remember, he was only making up that curse stuff for the popularity!"
"Hey, I dare you to drink from that fountain," says Norihiko.
"You mean the fountain that everyone uses," I said.
"You're probably the only guy I know who's an idiot for not coming up with stupid ideas," says Mayako.
"The whole point of a dare is to get someone to do something they wouldn't normally do," I said.
"But this way, I'll know they'd do it," says Norihiko.
"But all you'll get is me drinking perfectly safe..."
"Just do it," says Mayako, "I'm sure he'll get it... eventually."
Norihiko's a good friend, but I'm not sure he's all there. I then drank some water.
"I can't believe you did that," says Norihiko.
"I can't believe you couldn't believe he'd do that," says Mayako.
We then saw everyone was morning for Tomoko and Hideichi.
"Sad, isn't it," says Ryūji.
...
We were then at lunch. "So, do yo really not believe in curses," asks Mayako.
"Curses are real like Norihiko's understanding of the world around him," I said.
"Hey," says Norihiko.
"So, what do you think happened," asks Mayako.
"Hey, maybe Ryūji did it himself just to make people think it was a curse," I said.
"Hiroshi, I dare you to throw your trash in that trash barrel," says Norihiko.
"Is it wrong for me to want him to make you do something risky," asks Mayako.
"What if I threw Norihiko in the trash instead," I asked.
"Now, that sounds less boring," says Mayako.
We then laughed. I then looked over at Tomoko's table. What did happen? According to what I've heard, her face ended up the same as Hideichi. This couldn't have been a curse! It had to have been something else, but what?
...
I read about another classmate. Nomi Takehito and his girlfriend, Yoko Tsuji. They both died in a car near the lake. A case of love suicide? According to this, everyone thought that at first, but then the possibility was eliminated. I took a look at the picture, and it looked more like they were trying to escape. So, what's the real cause of death? Maybe it was a virus. Yeah, I'm sure that's what it was. I then took a look. Looks like they, and the two recent deaths all died of myocardial infraction. I knew it wasn't a curse!
Ryūji's POV:
I called Mr. Kaneda and told him he only has two days left. "You're going overboard," says Mr. Kaneda.
"You're sitting on the sofa in your house," I said, "there's a bottle of whisky in front of you."
"Where are you hiding," asks Mr. Kaneda. He then looked out the window.
"There's no need to look out the window," I said, "I'm far away from you. I have a special view. Not only can I see where you live, but even places beyond the horizon are within my control. I can see your expression very clearly."
"What are you saying," asks Mr. Kaneda.
"This is something which cannot be explained scientifically," I said.
"Your so-called 'unusual phenomena' again?"
"You should know Mai," I asked.
"So?"
"You drove her into a state of mental instability," I said, "she can no longer enjoy the freedom of life."
"What has this got to do with you," Mr. Kaneda asks. I then hung up on him. I then looked at her. "Mai!"
