After Hellboy and Marie returned to the B.P.R.D.'s Garage, Agents Lime and Stone approached them. While Marie was already aware of what happened, Hellboy was still oblivious.
"Take us there," Marie told the agents.
The agents nodded in response before leading the half-demon man and woman to where Broom's body was. The journey through the B.P.R.D. was quiet and solemn.
Hellboy remained unaware of what happened until the group reached the library. As they walked past the golden doors, Hellboy's face contorted with grief when he saw Broom's fragile body lying motionless on the floor. A small pool of blood was beside him, near the back of his neck.
The room is full of forensic people taking pictures, collecting evidence, etc. Tom Manning is there, supervising. Seeing Hellboy, he respectfully steps back. The forensics near Broom's body step back for Hellboy.
With tears in his eyes, a disbelieving Hellboy looks at Marie, then at his dead father. He makes his way to his father's body before falling to his knees. The half-demon man gently holds Broom's body close to his. He rests his face against Broom's.
Seeing Hellboy grieve for his father brought bad memories for Marie. She remembered when she learned of her mother's death, the funeral, and the days after. Losing someone you love is one of the hardest things in life.
It had been three days since Broom's death. Hellboy didn't eat, sleep, or speak to anyone during those days. Marie knew he was having a hard time dealing with his father's death. She had been in his shoes.
The rain heavily pours as the Pallbearers, including Manning and Marie, load Broom's casket into a Hearse. Flanking it are two rows of B.P.R.D. agents. A sea of black umbrellas parts as the casket approaches the hearse before being placed inside. The hearse doors close before the vehicle pulls away. Marie silently says goodbye, watching her friend leave. She prayed that he be at peace and welcomed by her other father into Heaven.
Marie had given a eulogy during the service. She spoke about her friendship with Broom, as Zarathos and Marie. Marie told everyone that she couldn't have asked for a better friend. She was going to miss Broom.
Marie steps out from underneath the covered walkway outside the building. And into the rain, allowing it to drench her. She walks beside the hearse as the funeral cortege drives away. She looks up to see Hellboy, holding Broom's rosary in his left hand, watching like a gargoyle atop the walkway. Rain bounces off his wet overcoat. The woman became worried about the half-demon man. She understands what he is going through. She knew he was hurting.
Not long after the funeral, Manning held a meeting. The man stands at a polished obsidian desk. A group of agents listens attentively. Marie is among the group at the table. But while she listens to Manning, her mind drifts. She wonders how Hellboy is doing.
Behind Manning, a screen shows a location before showing the enhanced image of the old piece of paper with Cyrillic characters. The paper was found in the library by the forensics.
"Volokolamsk fields, fifty miles from Moscow. That's where we're going," Manning said. "Sebastian Plackba #16. That's the only clue we have. We've collected and destroyed thousands of eggs. But we have no trace of this "Sammael" or this "Rasputin" character. We leave as soon as we get clearance and equipment. Hellboy's coming. I'm not pleased about that, but I will be in charge this time. We either wrap this up, or I'm closing this freak show for good."
Marie perked up when she heard Hellboy would be going to Moscow. She wonders if Manning says Hellboy is going or if Hellboy is going.
After the meeting, Marie went to Med Bay. She needed to talk to someone. Abe, conscious but still in the cast, floats upside down, solving a Rubik's Cube. Marie sits beside the tank.
"He hasn't spoken to anyone in three days. Not a word. He doesn't eat, he doesn't sleep. I'm worried about him. I worry in a way that I've never had about anyone before. What should I do, Abe?"
"Marie, I'm not much of a problem solver," Abe said before showing her the cube. "Three decades, and I've only completed two sides. But I do know this much. If there's trouble, all us freaks have is each other. And I'm stuck here. So take care of the big monkey for me, will you?"
"I promise," Marie smiled.
Their hands almost touch, separated only by the glass. Abe could sense how Marie and Hellboy felt about each other. He hoped they would reveal those feelings before it was too late.
After talking to Abe, Marie decided to speak with Hellboy. The woman knew there could only be one place where the half-demon man would be.
Marie enters the library and sees Hellboy, his back facing her. Hellboy stands before Broom's desk, pensively looking at a sketched picture of Rasputin. Marie watches him from across the room.
"Hi," Marie spoke, letting Hellboy know she was there.
The half-demon man turns to Marie as she slowly comes towards him.
"Hi," Hellboy returned.
"I know what it's like to lose someone you love. When I lost my Mama, I wasn't the same. I have felt everything you're feeling now," Marie told him. "Manning mentioned that you are coming with us to Moscow. Are you still going?"
"I am," Hellboy nods, then clears his throat. "But… I have something to say, too. I never had the guts before -" The half-demon man looks her in the eye. "But I understand what you don't like about me. I do. What I am makes you feel out of place… out there."
"Red, I -" Marie began but was interrupted by Hellboy.
"Listen. I'm not like other guys. I wish I could do something about this," Hellboy angrily gestures to his face. Marie could tell how upset he was with his appearance. It prevents him from going out and being among people. It prevents him from being with someone. Her powers had done the same.
"But I can't. I can promise you only two things..." Hellboy continued. "One: I'll always look this good." Marie couldn't help but smile. She looks down, only for Hellboy to lift her head by her chin. The woman and half-demon man look into each other's eyes. "Two: I won't give up on you. Ever."
Hellboy's stone hand grabs Marie's hand and lightly squeezes it. Marie squeezes his hand back.
"I like that. Thank you," Marie softly spoke.
"You're welcome," Hellboy said.
They silently stand close to each other. No one dares to speak a word. Fearing it would end the moment. Hellboy and Marie slowly lean closer before hugging. Marie buried her face in Hellboy's chest while Hellboy rested his chin on Marie's head. The woman and half-demon man hold each other close, afraid the other will disappear.
