Once they got off the elevator and into the lair, Gosalyn untied Louie's blindfold. "Now, don't touch-"
"Woaaah! What on earth is this?!" Dewey climbed up onto her motorbike, examining the control panel along with all the tricked out gear attached to it. "This is insane!"
Huey limped over to the Darkwing display case, paying special attention to the smaller costume displayed in the case with the "Q" emblem. "Looks to me like you have a few more talents you didn't mention."
"And a much more expensive ride than old Petunia out there," Louie ran his hand over the green and purple paint job.
Gosalyn rushed to grab her crossbow out of Dewey's hands. "Guys, it's really nothing. Careful with that." She flushed and wiped a smudge off of her crossbow, avoiding all the eyes staring at her.
"Wait, wait, wait, are you-you're… Haha!" Dewey hopped off the bike and grabbed her in a hug. "You're Darkwing Duck's new sidekick, Quiverwing, aren't you?"
Gosalyn stumbled out of his arms when he set her back on the ground. She rubbed the back of her neck, unable to stop her lips from spreading into the widest smile. Dewey's grin was honestly contagious. Finally! Someone I can actually tell. "Yeah, Dad made it official last month after my birthday."
"NO. WAY. This is amazing, Gos! I had my suspicions when I heard the news broadcast on the radio but this? This is better than I could have ever imagined?! You know how I always wished I was you? Well, now it's up to a whole new level! You're like a ghost. People are totally mystified by you. More so than even Darkw-" The lights cut out and Dewey's voice faded off.
Louie backed into Gosalyn. "Uhhhh, what's haaappening?"
"I am the terror that flaps in the night."
Gosalyn rolled her eyes and looked directly through the darkness at the exact spot in the rafters she knew her dad was lurking. Here we go again. "An entrance is everything, Gosalyn." She tended to think that the silent method was a little more effective but he had his thing and she was now entitled to her own.
"I am the premature balding that is creeping up on your 20s."
Well, that's a new one.
"Oh no! Am I balding? Tell me I'm not balding!" Dewey shook her by the arm.
"I am Darkwiiiiiiing Duck!" The lights flicked back on as her dad swooped out of the shadows in a cloud of smoke.
Both Dewey and Launchpad clapped for him. "Bravo! Another stellar entrance, DW!"
Darkwing let go of his cape and straightened, glancing around at their guests. He put a hand on LP's shoulder. "Good to see you, LP."
"You too, DW!"
In a few more steps, he was right in front of her. "Gosalyn." The tone in his voice showed more irritation than when he had busted his toe on the fridge just that same morning.
"Dad." She peered at the eyes behind the purple mask.
Darkwing stalked across the room. "What did I say about bringing boys to the lair?" He grabbed Huey's arm and yanked it into the air.
Gosalyn heaved a sigh and smiled, leaning with her elbow on Dewey's shoulder. "Daaaad, these aren't just boys. Don't you remember?" She pointed at each of them. "This is Huey, Dewey, and Louie. They're Scrooge's nephews."
Darkwing rubbed his chin and looked each of them over. "Hm, yes, that does add up. They are nearly identical and wearing primary colors."
Dewey mumbled under his breath. "Excuse me, we're clearly different-looking. I mean, did you even see my hair? And this baseball jersey is mint vintage."
"Even so, why are they here?"
"They came with Launchpad. They're looking for information about their past that only Professor VonDrake has access to. Since LP is coming on our stake out tonight, I didn't see any harm in adding a few extra pairs of hands to the team." She skipped over and smiled up at him. "Come on, Dad. Just once? Think about it. I'll have backup inside the lab and you'll have enough people to flank the place on every side."
Darkwing ran his hand over his chin. "Hmmm… well, it would be nice." His eyes narrowed.
Gosalyn glanced over her shoulder to see who he was eyeing. Louie. I should have guessed. He was literally one of the witnesses in Louie's fraud case.
"How can we know we can trust them?"
Gosalyn bit her lip and glanced at Huey for help. He just gave her a dumb, awkward smile and shrugged. She met eyes with her dad again. "I trust them. They're on our side and they really just want to know more about their dad. I don't think it's fair to distrust them when they have no motive to hurt our mission. Saving Professor VonDrake's files and research is even more important to them right now than it is to us."
Huey was smiling at her. Why? Ugh, it was making her face warm. All she did was tell the truth of why they were there, just in a better, more fluent way than Dewey did.
Darkwing looked between the three boys, then Launchpad who nodded in agreement, before smiling down at her. "Very well. You twisted my arm. They can come. Just as long as they go through my Darkwing Duck safety program before we hit the road… and they stay away from my stuff." He pointed at Dewey who was inching towards the Thunderquack. "That's right, Blue. I remember you. Don't touch my stuff."
Dewey folded his arms across his chest and huffed.
Gosalyn hugged him around the waist. "Thanks, Dad! You won't regret it."
Darkwing placed his free arm around her and spoke under his breath. "Keep an eye on that one." He nodded towards Louie, who sat against the wall with his phone. "He's shifty."
Gosalyn knocked fists with him. "He's already on my radar."
"Hey, uh, Mr. Mallard-Darkwing sir, can you let go of my arm now?" Huey smiled through a wince. "Please?"
Darkwing let go of his, now bright red, arm. "Sorry about that, kid." He threw his cape out and walked off. "LP, prepare the Thunderquack! We're leaving as soon as the sun dips below the horizon."
Huey straightened, rubbing his arm. "He's got some grip."
"Sorry about him. He can be a little overprotective sometimes." Gosalyn fixed one of Huey's bandages that had started to slide down his head.
"I can't blame him."
He was smiling at her again and she found herself smiling back before he broke his stare and rubbed his neck.
"Yeah, Uncle D's whole parenting style was overprotective, so trust me, I'm used to it." He leaned against his crutch. "Thanks for doing all this for us, Gosalyn. You really didn't have to. I know it's a hassle and I can tell that your dad is a little edgy when it comes to Louie."
Gosayln's cheeks flamed. "There's no need to thank me. Dewey helped me find answers about my family and I'd really like to return the favor and help you guys learn more about yours."
Huey straightened, setting some weight on his bandaged foot that made him stand taller. "Either way, we appreciate all you're doing for us. And when it comes to Lou? You don't have to worry about him. I'll make sure he stays in line. I mean, look at me." He smirked, tapping the wrapping on his head. "It's in my best interest to make sure he doesn't screw things up again, or get anyone else hurt."
Gosalyn laughed a little. "You make a very good point. Can you handle him in your state?"
Huey winked at her. "Trust me, I'll handle this."
