One day when they were eating dinner Bruce smiled big at the boy. He obviously was trying to hide the smile but he wasn't very good at it.
"What's wrong Bruce?" Dick looked at the man questioningly.
"I have a surprise for you, follow me." Dick stared at him curiously and followed him around to a locked room.
"Ok, close your eyes," Bruce said, unlocking the door. Dick indulged in letting Bruce lead him into the room.
When Dick opened his eyes he saw they were a giant gymnasium but that's not what caught his attention the most. In the left corner of the gymnasium was a bunch of gymnastics equipment and a trapeze set.
"Do you like it? This door will be open so you can use it whenever you want." He sounded nervous. Was he worried Dick wouldn't like it? Dick beamed at Bruce.
"I love it, thank you so much!" Dick ran off to the trapeze set first. As he climbed up the ladder. He saw Bruce look up in concern.
"Maybe this was a bad idea," the man muttered.
"Bruce, Bruce, watch me!" Dick exclaimed, grabbing onto the trapeze. Dick took a deep breath and swung. Suddenly he was in his element again. Whooshing through the air he did a few acrobatic tricks. He watched Bruce tense as he let go of the trapeze and giggled as he fell into the net.
Bruce walked over to him. They sat there in silence staring at each other. The trapeze brought up memories of his parents and Dick felt growing resentment towards them. Bruce was right who just lets their kid run off to get kidnapped?
"I think I hate them." Bruce froze.
"Hate who chum?" Dick looked away.
"My parents, if they cared they wouldn't have let me wander off alone to find you, and if they cared they would have found me by now," Dick said bitterly. Bruce sighed.
"I know it's hard chum, but you have us now." He said sitting on the net and rubbing Dicks back to comfort him. That should have been Dicks first warning sign. They sat there in silence for a bit enjoying each other's company until it was dinner time.
As they were walking to the dining room Bruce abruptly stopped.
"Go wait in the dining room chum, I'll be right back." Dick nodded obediently. However, as he was walking towards the dining room he noticed some sunlight. His eyes followed the sunlight to the front door which was open slightly. Dick couldn't believe his luck! As he was about to scale the baby gate to get to the door he hesitated.
'What if his parents didn't want to see him?' he thought. After weighing it for a moment he decided he had to try and escape it was now or never.
Dick quickly climbed over the gate adrenaline pushing him to do what he couldn't before. He pushed the door open, ran out towards the light, and bam something caught his shoulder.
He tried wrenching out of this thing's grip but it was iron-strong. Finally, Dick whipped his head around and was met with the face of none other than Clark.
