Chapter One - A Rook Betrayed
Kuoh Academy bustled with energy that afternoon, with the usual mix of students laughing and chatting as they filled the halls. Outside, the air was thick with the promise of summer, the warmth pressing down as the sun crept toward the horizon.
Andreas stood apart, watching as Rias's peerage gathered around her, discussing plans for the upcoming trip to the Familiar Forest. Rias's words were firm and confident, her attention fully on Issei and Asia as she explained the importance of securing a familiar. He hovered on the edge of the group, almost out of place—a silent observer.
As the conversation carried on, Andreas shifted uncomfortably. He felt the familiar, insidious warmth radiating from the green gem nestled in the collar around his neck. It throbbed in sync with his heartbeat, an unwelcome reminder of his place and the weakness that shadowed him like a curse.
The others paid him no mind; to them, he was simply present, there to follow orders, unable to keep up with the demands placed on a Rook. Rias's eyes flickered to him briefly, and he thought he caught a hint of disdain. He averted his gaze quickly, hoping she hadn't seen the flash of frustration that crept into his expression. The truth was as plain as day: Rias had come to see him as an unreliable part of her peerage, and that knowledge cut him deeper than he cared to admit.
It hadn't always been like this, though. When she first found him, things had been different.
Flashback
The moon was high in the sky, casting pale light over the dim streets of Kuoh. Shadows clung to the alleyways, and a biting wind cut through the air, carrying the faint metallic scent of blood.
Rias hadn't planned on taking this route back to the clubhouse, but something had compelled her—a faint tug at the edge of her awareness, a feeling she couldn't quite shake. She turned a corner, her eyes narrowing as she spotted a figure slumped against a wall, barely visible in the shadows.
She approached cautiously, her eyes widening as she took in the scene. The boy before her was barely conscious, his body riddled with cuts and bruises, dark blood seeping from a wound on his side. He tried to move, but his muscles betrayed him, leaving him helpless, a faint groan escaping his lips.
Rias knelt down, assessing the severity of his injuries. His breathing was shallow, and his pulse flickered weakly beneath her fingertips. He's not going to make it, she thought, a pang of sympathy stirring within her.
He opened his eyes then, green meeting blue, and she saw something there—a flicker of determination, of a spirit that refused to yield. It was that spark that made her decide. She wasn't sure what he was or why he'd been left here to die, but she knew what she could do.
Without hesitation, she reached for one of her Rook pieces, pressing it against his chest. Energy surged from her hand into his body, and she felt the piece merge with him, fusing his soul to her peerage. His breathing steadied, and some color returned to his face. He would live.
At first, Rias had been hopeful. She'd brought him into her peerage expecting a powerful Rook, one who could help protect her and stand by her side. But it hadn't taken long for the truth to reveal itself.
The power of the Rook piece should have bolstered his strength, reinforcing his body and endowing him with remarkable durability. But while he seemed to survive, his physical strength remained unchanged, as if the piece was working only to keep him alive, not to enhance him. Weeks passed, and his weakness became more apparent with each passing day.
One evening, she pulled him aside after a training session, frustration evident in her voice. "Andreas, I thought you'd be stronger by now. The Rook piece should've amplified your abilities… but it's like you're not getting any stronger at all." Her tone was sharp, tinged with disappointment.
Andreas could only lower his gaze, feeling the weight of her words as heavily as he felt the collar at his throat. He wanted to be the Rook she deserved, to repay her for saving his life. But the collar's relentless grip held him back, its presence a constant reminder that he would never truly be free
Flashback End
Andreas's chest tightened as the memories faded. He looked toward the others, catching Rias's eye for the briefest moment before she turned away, her attention back on Issei and Asia. She had saved his life, yes, but he wondered if she ever regretted it.
As Andreas struggled to keep up with the conversation, unaware of the finality behind Rias's recent glances, she had already made up her mind. She couldn't deny that Andreas had once seemed like a promising addition to her peerage, but that hope had quickly faded. His persistent weakness felt like an anchor dragging down her aspirations, and her frustration had only grown over time.
Her gaze drifted toward him briefly, a flicker of disdain in her eyes before she returned her focus to Issei, already calculating the next step in her plan.
Unknown to Andreas, she had recently reached out to Seekvaira Agares, hoping to arrange a trade. Seekvaira had yet to accept, but Rias felt confident that her fellow devil might agree, especially with a little persuasion. In her mind, Andreas would be better off somewhere else, with someone who might have the patience to deal with his deficiencies.
Let someone else handle him, she thought, a wave of relief washing over her at the thought. Soon, she would be free of the burden he had become, and her peerage could move forward with renewed strength.
She turned her back to Andreas, already setting her sights on the future, leaving him oblivious to the plans she had woven to wash her hands of him completely.
The journey back from the Familiar Forest was filled with laughter and chatter, a sense of accomplishment hanging in the air as Issei and Asia excitedly discussed their newly acquired familiars. Andreas walked quietly at the back of the group, observing the excitement but feeling the familiar pang of isolation. Even in the midst of his peers, he felt like an outsider.
As they entered the clubhouse, however, the conversation ceased, and everyone came to a halt. Seated gracefully in one of the plush chairs was a figure Andreas immediately recognized: Seekvaira Agares. Her regal presence commanded the room, her poise as unwavering as her cool, calculating gaze.
Issei's eyes widened, his jaw dropping slightly as his imagination ran wild, his gaze lingering on her figure. He was practically drooling, his thoughts evident from the dumbfounded expression on his face. Akeno noticed and quickly stepped in, ushering him, Asia, and the rest of the peerage from the room, leaving only Rias, Seekvaira, and Andreas behind.
As the door closed, Rias turned to face Seekvaira, a determined glint in her eye. She didn't waste time on pleasantries, her tone all business as she addressed the noble devil before her.
"Seekvaira," Rias began, her voice steady, "I appreciate you coming on such short notice. There's a matter I need to discuss with you... concerning Andreas."
Andreas's heart sank at the sound of his name, a sense of foreboding settling over him as he looked between Rias and Seekvaira. He didn't yet understand what was happening, but he could feel the weight of the moment bearing down on him, as if the very air around him had grown heavier.
Rias met his gaze, and in that instant, he understood. She wasn't just discussing him—she was planning to discard him, to cast him aside like a piece of unwanted debris.
Seekvaira nodded even before Rias could fully articulate her proposal. Her voice was calm, but her words held a quiet resolve. "I'll accept your terms, Rias. I'm willing to take Andreas in exchange for one of my unused Rook pieces."
Rias blinked, momentarily taken aback by Seekvaira's swift agreement. She'd anticipated a more drawn-out negotiation, but Seekvaira's readiness to comply caught her off guard. Suppressing a satisfied smile, Rias inclined her head. "Very well. I'll have the paperwork sent to you shortly. Consider the trade finalized."
Andreas stood silent, the reality of the situation dawning on him like a cold shadow. He was being traded, handed over like an object. The betrayal cut deeper than any wound, leaving him numb. His gaze dropped to the floor, fighting to suppress the overwhelming sense of abandonment that clawed at his chest.
Seekvaira's eyes flicked to him, and there was a softness in her gaze, a hint of something he hadn't expected—compassion. She rose gracefully from her chair, extending a hand toward him. "Andreas, I'll take care of you from here on out. Let's go."
Unknown to either Rias or Andreas, Sona had met with Seekvaira days earlier. She had urged her friend to accept the trade should Rias offer it, carefully detailing the mistreatment Andreas had endured. Sona's words had caught Seekvaira off guard, stirring a quiet anger as she listened to the tale of neglect and frustration that Andreas had endured. It hadn't taken much to convince her.
"I don't need to understand the full story," Seekvaira had replied to Sona then, her voice steady. "If he's suffered as you say, then I'll take him under my wing."
Now, as she watched Andreas, a part of her silently reaffirmed that decision. She was determined to offer him the respect and care that Rias had denied him, and to help him find a place where he was valued.
With a final glance at Rias, she gently guided Andreas from the room, leaving the Gremory heiress behind, ready to fulfill the promise she had made to Sona: she would do everything she could to help Andreas rebuild his life.
The familiar sensation of teleportation faded as Andreas and Seekvaira reappeared in the grand entryway of the Agares mansion. The vast, elegant hall stretched out before them, its walls adorned with the crests and symbols of Seekvaira's noble lineage. Yet, the opulent surroundings barely registered in Andreas's mind, the ache in his chest overshadowing all else.
They had barely taken a few steps when his vision began to blur, the full weight of his circumstances pressing down on him. His legs wobbled, and before he knew it, the last of his strength deserted him. He stumbled, his body giving way.
Seekvaira reacted instantly, catching him before he could hit the ground. She lowered him gently, her arms providing a firm, steady support as his breathing grew shallow. He could feel her concerned gaze on him, her touch warm and reassuring, but it only seemed to amplify the hollowness inside him.
Am I really this worthless? The thought drifted through his mind, thick with sorrow and disbelief. After all I tried to do for her... was it really not enough?
As the darkness encroached, taking him under, he clung to that painful question, his last conscious thought a bitter echo of everything he'd lost. He surrendered to the darkness.
The moment Andreas went limp in her arms, Seekvaira's heart clenched, a surge of urgency flooding through her. She glanced over her shoulder, raising her voice to summon help. "Someone, quickly! I need assistance here!"
Two maids appeared almost instantly, their eyes widening slightly at the sight before them. Without hesitation, they moved to help, each taking a gentle hold of Andreas as they guided him through the mansion's halls. Seekvaira stayed close, her hands steady on his shoulders, ensuring he was supported every step of the way.
As they carefully laid him on the bed in an unused bedroom, she couldn't tear her gaze away from his face. He looked utterly drained, his expression shadowed by pain and exhaustion even in sleep.
Hold on, she thought, her resolve hardening. I'll do whatever I can to help you.
She watched him a moment longer, her mind already racing with possibilities. She was determined to get to the bottom of his suffering, to understand the mysteries surrounding him, and most of all, to give him a place where he was valued. As she brushed a stray lock of hair from his forehead, she silently promised him that, no matter what it took, she would help him rebuild the life Rias had so thoughtlessly discarded.
