Chapter 5 – Sunburn

Jane and Maura couldn't wait to get married. As soon as it became legal in Massachusetts they went to the courthouse and applied for a marriage license. They were married two weeks later in a nice courthouse ceremony. They did not invite any of their family or friends to the courthouse ceremony as they had scheduled a destination wedding for one year later.

After the courthouse wedding, they took a weeklong honeymoon to New York and then finalized their plans for their destination wedding to Santorini, Greece. One year later, after their destination wedding ceremony, they spent the week in Santorini with their family and friends. They had already had a honeymoon after their courthouse wedding so they wanted this to be a time of celebration with their family and friends.

Towards the end of the week, Jane had agreed to go on a deep-sea fishing trip with the guys. Korsak really wanted to go on this fishing trip and Jane just couldn't say no to him. Over the years he hadn't asked Jane for much. This trip was something that he would love to do with Jane and she knew that it would mean the world to him so she didn't hesitate to say yes. She knew Maura wouldn't want to go so they had agreed that Jane would go fishing with the guys while she would go shopping with the girls.

They had been outside for the majority of the week and Maura had made sure that Jane was applying sunscreen so that she wouldn't get burned. Jane knew she could get burned however, she just forgot sometimes to put the lotion on especially at times when she was not with Maura. When they had activities together, they would put the lotion on each other, so she was covered. Sometimes the lotion application process led to 'other activities' instead of getting ready for the event they were going to. They both enjoyed their 'other activities' however they tried not to be late to their activities.

The day of the deep-sea fishing adventure she was getting up early and did not want to wake Maura up. She took every precaution and tiptoed into the bathroom carrying all of her clothes so she could get dressed in there and not disturb her wife. She loved being able to call Maura her wife. Even after a year of being legally married it felt like it was just yesterday that they had gotten married. She hoped that she would never take their love for granted.

Jane dressed and left for the dock to meet the guys. It was chilly in the early morning so she wore layers. As the day heated up, she removed the layers. After lunch, she had removed all the outer layers and was now in shorts and a t-shirt. It was in the 80s with a slight breeze. She was feeling great. She hadn't caught any fish but she was having fun with Korsak, Frost, Cavanaugh, her brothers and other male family members that had attended her wedding and stuck around for the week-long festivities.

They had consumed beer and helped each other reel in the large bass that they had caught. Tommy caught the largest sea bass of the day. It weighed nineteen pounds and was two and a half feet long. Everyone was enjoying the activity, they all wanted their picture taken with the fish. It made for a great souvenir of the activity and over the years they had seen plenty of pictures of people with the huge fish hanging beside them. They learned how to sliced up the fish and pack the fish with ice after they had taken pictures with the fish.

Part of the activity included a dinner utilizing the fish that they caught. That is why they had cut up and packed the fish with ice during the day. Jane had worried at first and asked Korsak, "What happens if we don't catch any fish?"

Korsak laughed and told her, "Janie, if we don't catch any fish, they will provide some fish for our dinner. When I asked the man that was in charge, he said that they have only had one tour in over ten years that hadn't caught any fish. So, I really don't think we have anything to worry about."

When the boat docked, they were directed to a small building close by. When they entered the building Jane was surprised to see how elaborate the inside was. There were small decorated tables. They were shown to the kitchen area so that they could watch their fish being cooked. The chef had asked if anyone wanted to assist him. Everyone volunteered Jane so she put on the apron and followed the chef's direction.

Twenty minutes later they were all seated and enjoying the fruits of their labor. Jane was handed a video tape of her time with the chef. He told her, "anytime you want to cook with me just let my restaurant know and I will make sure we can do that. Attached to the video tape was a business card with all of his contact information.

Before they left Korsak stepped into the kitchen to talk with the chef. He explained that Jane just got married and that she and her wife were technically on their honeymoon. They agreed to have Jane and Maura come to his restaurant the next evening for a special meal. The entire family was invited. He said his restaurant was normally closed but he would open it up just for the Rizzoli family. Korsak was pleased and joined the others so that they could walk back to the hotel together.

When Jane returned back to the hotel after dinner, she went to take a shower and Maura noticed that she was sunburned. Maura had walked into the bathroom to join Jane for a shower. The water wasn't as hot as Jane normally had it and Maura knew it was because the water beating down on Jane was aggravating her sunburn. They quickly finished their shower and dried off.

Maura found the bottle of aloe vera lotion that she had packed and applied it to Jane's sunburned areas. Maura tried to be prepared at all times and bringing sunburn lotion was just a part of her preparedness kit that she always carried since she met Jane.

Jane was tossing and turning as she tried to sleep so Maura got up and applied additional lotion to her. Her efforts were rewarded with Jane deciding that she wanted to make love to her, now that they were both awake. Maura couldn't argue with that so they spent until the early morning hours making love. When the alarm sounded for family breakfast time, neither of them wanted to get up. "Maur, can't we skip breakfast and just stay in bed?"

"Jane, as much as I would love that, we agreed to have this week as family time and we promised that we would have breakfast with everyone this morning. We are leaving to go home tomorrow morning so this is our last family breakfast."

"I think I need another application of lotion."

"Jane, it will only be me applying lotion, no funny stuff."

"Maur, what funny stuff would you be talking about?" Jane asked as she pulled Maura in for a hug and started kissing her.

"Jane, we have to get up and get ready. We have been late to almost every activity this week." Jane just smiled at her. "Jane!"

"Okay, okay, I am getting up." Jane said as she released her hold on Maura and got up. She started to wince as certain movements aggravated her sunburn. Maura noticed and pushed Jane in the direction of the shower while she gathered the lotion and prepared to apply it to Jane as soon as she finished her shower.

Maura hadn't said anything about the sunburn yet but Jane knew that she would get some sort of lecture from Maura before the trip was over. She knew that she would deserve the lecture as she was the one that forgot to put sunscreen on before getting dressed for her deep-sea fishing adventure.

When Jane got out of the shower, Maura was waiting and started applying the lotion. She reminded Jane of the importance of applying sunscreen. She told her, "I am not going to give you a lecture. I know you were probably wondering when I was going to give it but the reminder, I just gave you is all that I am going to say on the subject. You are old enough to be responsible for your actions and the consequences of your actions. I will continue to apply the lotion for as long as you need it because I love you. But please try and remember to put on sunscreen when you are going to be outdoors in the sun."

"I will, thank you Maur for taking such good care of me."

"You are welcome my love, now let's go enjoy the last day of our family honeymoon."

"Can you apply my sunscreen for me."

"Of course, as long as you apply mine. I would hate to get sunburned on our last day."
