Prompt: Bonfires under the stars

Ziva stared mesmerized at the flickering flames reaching ever higher in the starlit sky. She looked up, and away from the fire, smiling at the abundance of stars contrasting the darkness surrounding them. Stargazing in Washington never really occurred to her, and she never consciously missed the stars until she found herself away from the bright and ever present city lights.

Tony sighed heavily beside her. "This is going to take forever."

The distant whine of an approaching fire truck urged her to focus on her partner. "You said you wanted to see a bonfire."

Tony looked at her blankly, then pointed at the flames hungrily eating away at the wood that was feeding it. "That's a barn fire, not a bonfire."

Ziva barely cocked her head in agreement, and went back to staring at the flames. They both flinched as the roof came down, sparks flying everywhere. Even from where they were standing the heat was getting overwhelming.

Tony sighed again. "That's our evidence, literally going up in flames." As the fire truck came to halt, spewing out firefighters and water in mere seconds, he added, "And water."

Ziva groaned, the magic of the fire gone as the blaze was tempered with blasts of water. "We will be here all day trying to recover something, anything." She looked at Tony. "We can wake up McGee."

Tony glanced at his phone. "Nah, let him sleep, these guys will be here for a while," he said nodding at the firefighters, "and the sun won't be up for another two hours, so unless McGee developed x-ray or night vision from reading too many comics, he'll be of more us to us well rested."

She smiled softly, as much as he enjoyed playing pranks on them, when it mattered he was always there for them. "I have water and snacks in my go-bag, I'll go get them."

He gave her a tired grin. "Looks like I am getting a bonfire and picnic, after all."
