Kate's gaze, full of something close to awe paired with unease, cut through her like a sharp blade, unnerving her down to the very bone.
"Quit looking at me like that" she ground out, glaring at the Argent.
'You don't know what you are, do you?" Kate continued to prod, an arrogant smirk pulling at her lips.
"Jesus Christ reborn" she snapped, eliciting a gleeful laugh from the hunter.
"Do you know Derek?" Kate asked, "Is this another family secret? Or are you just as clueless?"
Everyone remained silent, giving Kate her answer.
"Maybe I should slice you up, take a peek inside" she grinned, "see what your insides could tell me".
"You don't scare me" Kayla scoffed, "so take your pathetic threats and shove them so far up your ass you choke on them".
"I should scare you" Kate smirked, swinging the gun around in her hand, "after all, I'm the one in control here. I decide whether you both live or die".
"Then put me out of misery so I don't have to listen to your incessant, arrogant yapping anymore".
"Y'know… I kind of like you" Kate shrugged, "you remind me of me".
She couldn't help but scoff. "I am nothing like you".
"You sure about that?" she asked, "you're always having to prove yourself, aren't you? Always getting dumped on by everyone else? Never scared to make the hard decisions, weighed down by guilt. I bet you've hurt a lot of people, and I'm even more sure you probably enjoyed it".
"I've not murdered innocent people".
"Yet" Kate grinned, "give it time. Maybe those pretty green eyes of yours mean that, not only are you not human, but you're not so innocent after all".
She didn't say anything, biting back her words. Determined not to play into Kate's game.
"I want to know who the Alpha is" Kate shrugged, "and you can either tell me and live, or end up caving and telling me and dying. So what's it going to be?"
Both her and Derek remained in stony silence, not willing to give Kate what she desired most of all. If they told her, she would have the upper hand and still, most likely, end up killing them. She wasn't exactly honourable in her promises.
"I see" Kate sighed, "well… I suppose the Hale family lineage ends here. Any last words?" she asked, raising the gun and pointing it at her.
"Yeah" she snapped, "go fuck yourself!".
"Surprisingly uncreative. I expected better".
"I'm not wasting my breath on you".
Kate turned to look at Derek, cocking a brow as she smirked. "Say bye bye to little cuz".
Derek was panicked, staring between them both in fear but it seemed the final blow was when she raised the gun again, only this time pointing it directly at her head, did Derek shout out.
"Stop it. I'll help" he exclaimed, "let her go and keep me and I'll help you. I'll be bait. I'll be whatever you want, just let her go".
Kate grinned, "see? Finally, we're getting somewhere. Teamwork, am I right?"
Silence.
Kate lowered the gun, cocking her head to the side.
"That's why I always had a soft spot for you Derek… you act all tough and manly, but deep down you're just a giant teddy bear who loves his family more than himself. Shame you couldn't have saved the rest of them".
Derek simply lowered his head in defeat, not wanting Kate to see how much those words killed him inside. The guilt of the last six years eating him alive.
"I think it's time we invited a special guest, don't you think?"
She felt herself paling, the daunting realisation hitting her like a ton of bricks.
"Allison" she murmured.
Kate smirked, "you're smarter than you look, I'll give you that".
"Allison can't know about this" she insisted with a shake of her head, "not yet".
"Why not? Because she'll be mad at you?" Kate asked with a roll of her eyes, "That her best friend has been lying to her for weeks now?"
"No, because it's too God damn dangerous" she said, "she could get hurt. She's your niece, if you want to protect her, why risk her life like this?"
"Oh hon... I've been dropping breadcrumbs for a while now. Allison's a smart girl, she knows there's something off. It's better she knows so we can train her properly".
"You mean train her to be a killer?" Kayla snarled, unable to help the contempt that slipped into her tone.
"To do the right thing" Kate corrected, "sit tight, don't go anywhere. The show hasn't started yet".
She disappeared in the pick up, leaving them in total darkness. The only sliver of light was the moon overhead casting a silvery glow through the trees. If the situation wasn't so dire, it might've been beautiful.
"We are so screwed" she sighed, turning to glance at Derek but for some reason he looked to be in worse shape than her with sweat dripping from every pore of his body.
"You could say that" Derek replied, furious eyes never leaving the spot where Kate had left and Kayla could practically taste the hatred and resentment from where she was tied up.
"You look like hell" she observed.
"Rope dipped in Wolfsbane" he grunted.
"Oh. Is that worse than the Wolfsbane bullets?"
He rolled his eyes, "It's not exactly what I would call pleasant".
"So why are we not handing Peter's ass to Kate?" she asked, "if she wants to have a crack at killing him, she can be my guest. Maybe we'd get lucky, and they would kill each other".
"I'm not giving any Argent what they want" he replied, "and if we tell them, what do you think they'll do to us? The only reason she didn't pump us full of bullets is because she wants the Alpha more than us".
"So you're not protecting him?"
"No" he sighed, "I want him gone. I want him dead".
"But you don't want Kate to be the one to do it?" she guessed, the pieces of the puzzle slotting into place.
"He killed my sister. I want to rip his throat out".
"So you want to be the Alpha?"
"You ask too many questions".
"I'm just trying to figure everything out".
"Well stop" he advised, "and just focus on staying alive".
"Where's the fun in that?" she smirked, "and also, there's just one thing I need to know. Kate?" she questioned, cocking a dubious eyebrow at her cousin which made Derek incline his head to the side to glare at her.
"Shut up"
"Hey, I'm not judging... actually, screw that. I'm judging. Were you really that desperate?"
"I said shut up" he snapped, clearly unamused with her prodding but she didn't care.
"Was that before or after her family killed ours?"
"I wish she gagged you".
"Maybe she hoped I would annoy you to death".
"It's working".
"Very funny" she mocked, "any idea how we're getting out of this one?"
"No" was Derek's short and snappy reply, obviously not wanting to continue in any aspect of conversation with her.
"Enlightening, really" she remarked sarcastically, rolling her eyes but Derek kept looking over to her, slightly uneasy.
"If you want your hunter friend to not completely hate you, I suggest you stop with the glowing"
"I can't" she sighed, "I don't know how I'm doing it. And anyway, Allison is going to hate me now regardless".
"She's an Argent, you should've had enough sense to stay well clear of her in the first place".
"Allison isn't like them".
"Maybe not yet, but she will be" Derek said solemnly, "it's the family business".
"I don't believe that" she said with an adamant shake of her head, "she's good".
"None of them are good".
"She is".
"You're deluded".
"And you're narrow-minded. Hey ho, we can't all be perfect, huh?"
Derek sighed, giving up on changing her mind, sending her a look of concern.
"Do you feel any different?" he asked, obviously referencing her eyes.
"Not really" she shrugged – well, as much as she was able to with her arms tied back - "apart from the fact I'm making everyone around me horny".
He frowned in disturbance. "If by 'everyone' you mean Stilinski then-"
"Surprisingly, no" she cut him off, "he's the only one not affected by whatever the hell is happening to me. His horniness is simply just down to regular old me".
"Is that supposed to make me like him more? Because it's not working".
"Funnily enough, I don't care".
"You could do so much better than Stilinski".
"You're talking to me about standards? Really?" she scoffed, "need I remind you, you banged Kate?"
She got him there – she knew it, he knew it. Both falling into silence once again.
"Has Peter said anything?" she surrendered with a sigh, "about me? About what the bite did to me?"
"… No" he admitted, "he's been surprisingly tight-lipped about that".
"If I'm not a werewolf… what the hell could I be?"
"I don't know, but we'll figure it out. Maybe you should ask your mom".
"I'm not asking that bitch anything".
"Kayla-"
"What's the point? She'll just lie anyway".
"She might know something. You heard Peter-"
"Peter, who is also a liar" she scoffed, "I trust them less than I trust a broken parachute".
"If you want to know what you are, she has the answers".
"She can suck my non-existent dick".
Derek simply sighed at her stubbornness, but deep down he understood where she was coming from.
"At least we know the bite doesn't kill you".
"Yippee".
Two sets of headlights appeared in the distance, getting closer as each second passed.
"Unlike Kate probably will" she grumbled, "that bitch is really trigger-happy".
"You need to stop giving her snark so she lets you go".
"And I, what? Leave you as her BDSM sex slave? No chance".
"Kayla-"
"I got my ass kidnapped to save your ass. I'm not leaving you".
"You have to" he urged, "you need to warn Scott. Keep an eye on him. Protect him".
"And what about you?"
"I'll be fine" he promised, "I can take care of myself".
She glanced him up and down, shackled by the wolfsbane rope, looking utterly helpless.
"Yeah" he scoffed, "evidently".
"Kayla…" he groaned in exhaustion, "just do as I say for once? Please?"
"Even though it's a stupid idea?"
"Do we have time to think of anything better?" he asked as the pick-up came to a stop about twenty feet in front of the, the lights blinding them both.
"How you've lived this long amazes me" she muttered under her breath, watching in dread as Kate slipped from the pick-up, walking to the other car that was parked behind her, following her deep into the woods. Noticing her open the door for Allison who slid out nervously, her arms wrapped nervously around her body as she took in the sight in front of her.
"See kiddo?" Kate grinned, curling her hands around Allison's shoulders and walking her forward, "monsters do exist. They're all around us".
Allison's petrified eyes were hyper-fixated on Derek for several seconds before noticing her too, tied up and bound, complete confusion and terror pulsating through her stare.
"Oh my God" she exclaimed, a hand flying to her mouth, "K-Kayla? What-"
"Allison, I promise you this is not as bad as it looks" she exclaimed, although knew her words meant nothing as her friend stared at her with wide, glassy eyes, unsure and scared of her eyes that had yet to stop glowing.
"What... I-I don't understand..."
"Kayla's just... different" Kate smirked, "but she's not what I want you to see".
Kate advanced on Derek, lengthening the taser wand and striking out at his bare chest, the sharp jolts of electricity causing Derek to growl and snarl, his canines appearing and his eyes turning that brilliant glowing blue.
"What-What is he?" Allison asked fearfully, unable to take her eyes off him.
"Shape-shifter. Lycan. Werewolf" Kate smirked, finally stopping her torture of Derek to reach out and drag Allison by the elbow closer to them, "isn't he beautiful?"
"Were-Werewolf?" Allison exclaimed in disbelief, "I don't-"
"Werewolves exist" Kate continued, "and so do lots of other things that go bump in the night. I thought it was about time you found out the truth. You're fed up with feeling weak? Well, this is how you feel strong" she said, holding out the taser wand, "go on. Try it. I promise you, you've never felt power like it".
Allison shied away, too scared to even touch the weapon.
"I forget" Kate grinned, "you're more of an archery girl. That works too".
"Stay away from him" Kayla snarled, "or I'll-"
"What?" Kate taunted, "glare me to death? Look, Allison, you deserved to know the truth. Why you have to keep moving around. Why your garage is filled with enough weapons to overrun a city, and what really goes bump in the night. Your parents didn't think you were ready, but I do. Especially now".
"Now?" Allison frowned, "what's so special about now?"
"We're at war" Kate smirked, stepping closer to Derek and pulling his lip back, showing Allison his sharp canines, "ya see kiddo? They're all just beasts".
"So, he was the one at the video store and the school? Killing everyone?"
"No - there's three. A younger beta like him and an Alpha - and that's the one we're looking for" Kate explained to Allison before giving the girl a comforting shoulder pat and then striding over to Kayla, pulling a pair of sharp clippers from her back pocket and just when Kayla thought she was either going to start pulling her fingernails or teeth, she cut the rope free which caused her to fall to the ground.
"You can take this one home. I don't need her anymore".
"I am not leaving Der" Kayla protested, trying to stand but failing miserably. Her body still a little weak from the electric shocks that seized her body.
"You're welcome to stay, we could get acquainted more but I think Allison may be a bit bitter about me torturing one of her friends" Kate told her, "or former friend - depending".
"Kayla, go" Derek urged in exhaustion, "I'll be fine".
"See?" Kate smirked, "he'll be fine. I'll keep him occupied".
She didn't have a choice, she knew that. Stuck between a rock and a hard place as she finally managed to pick herself up, sending Kate a withering glare.
"If you hurt him, I'll kill you" she snarled, "and that's not a threat. It's a promise".
"Looking forward to seeing you try".
Stiles was an anxious mess.
Scott's phone kept going to the answering machine. Kayla's phone was ringing out. Jackson wasn't answering either.
Every time he cycled through them, he got more and more worried.
Why the hell weren't they answering?
He took to driving around in his jeep, feeling helpless and lost as he searched every nook and cranny of Beacon Hills.
"C'mon guys, where the hell are you?" he muttered, a nervous sweat dampening his clothes.
His best friend, his girlfriend – AWOL. Disappeared without a trace.
Intrusive, horror-filled thoughts consumed his brain. Imagining every single horrific scenario that could have happened. Hoping – and praying – they were still both alive.
He knew he should have convinced Kayla not to go running headfirst into danger, but she was like that you see. Untameable. Impulsive. Reckless. He liked it. He liked her wild and incontrollable, but not when it put her in danger.
A fist of worry seized his gut, only tightening with the more minutes – then hours - that went by.
He couldn't lose her. He couldn't lose either of them. What would he be without them?
The thought of them hurt was enough to make him sick, desperation like no other spreading through his veins like wildfire.
He had to keep going. He had to find them.
He promised himself that when he found them, he would never let them out of his sight ever again. Guess they would all have to do a giant slumber party and paint each other's toenails. It may look like a weird throuple, but he didn't care. He needed them safe.
He and Kayla were just starting out. Exploring their relationship and their feelings for each other outside of friendship. He was falling in love with her for crying out loud, and he wanted to keep falling in love with her. For that to happen, he needed her to be safe and alive.
He needed her safe, and alive, with him.
That was all he wanted.
Surely they weren't over before they even begun?
Kayla was sure this was the end of their friendship.
Since she got in the car, Allison hadn't uttered a single word to her. Her gaze, eerily focused on the dirt track road, was filled with tears, her bottom lip quivering. Her hands tightening and then loosening around the steering wheel. Her entire world crumbling down around her.
"Allison-"
"Don't Kayla, just... don't" she exclaimed, holding up a hand dismissively, "I don't want to hear it".
"I'm trying to explain things to you" Kayla reassured, "I'm not the bad guy here and neither is my family".
"Then why lie?" Allison demanded, still unable to look her in the eye, "You've lied to me for weeks - weeksand... and I just don't know why".
"It wasn't my secret to tell Allison" she explained truthfully, "and my history with your family-"
"If you were my friend, my real friend, you would've told me" Allison sniffed, using her sleeve to rub her nose, "not lied and hid things from me. That night at the school, that was a werewolf wasn't it?"
"Yeah. The Alpha".
"And all those people getting killed. That's the Alpha too?"
"Yeah".
"You've known this the entire time?"
"Pretty much".
"So you're actively hindering a police investigation?"
"Right. I'll just saunter into the Sheriff's station and tell them Michael J Fox's 'teen wolf' has gone on a spree, shall I?" she asked sarcastically, "don't be stupid. Like they'd believe that. I'd end up institutionalised".
"People are dead Kayla" Allison exclaimed, "we were almost dead, and you don't think you should've told me?"
"If you get your head out of your ass for one minute, then you'll realise this is bigger than just you. Should you have known? Maybe. But you gotta understand, your family are hunters. Mine are werewolves. I wasn't going to risk my family's life for a girl I've known five weeks because she might get her feelings hurt".
"You were meant to be my friend…"
"I am your friend" she insisted, "but knowing this comes with a price. People that know about these things end up dying".
"Stop making up excuses".
"It's not excuses. It's the cold hard truth".
"You lied to me" Allison accused.
"Yeah, I did" she admitted shamelessly, "my entire family got burnt to death, then the ones that survived got shot and then mauled. I've lost everyone I've ever cared about, and you know why I lost them? Because of hunters. Because of people – humans - like your family".
Allison flinched, "My family are not killers".
"Aren't they?" she scoffed, "they kill werewolves. Werewolves are still people".
"No, they're not. They're monsters".
"They're different" she corrected, "not all of them are bad. Laura wasn't bad. She was good. She helped people. She protected people. And you know what your family did? They found her dead naked body and decided to defile it by cutting it in half to try and lure Derek into a trap".
"They wouldn't-"
"They did because that's what they do" she exclaimed, "but have I held that against you? No. Because I know you're not to blame for their actions. You're different. You're good. Don't listen to your aunt".
"Why not?" Allison scoffed, still unable to look at her as she drove, "She's the only one that's been honest with me".
"Honest when it suits her" she said, "she wants this. She wants us fighting. She wants to turn you into a killer just like her".
"Kate's not a killer".
"Open your eyes Allison" she demanded, "she, or your family, murdered mine. There's been rumours about it for years and she's certainly unhinged enough to try".
"NO" Allison hollered, suddenly braking in the middle of the road, the wheels spinning. "Get out"
"You wanted the truth" Kayla snapped, "and now, what? You can't handle it?"
"Get out" Allison repeated, still unable to even look at her "Just get the hell out and leave me alone - you're one of them".
The accusation, shrouded in so much disdain, made Kayla's blood boil in fury - if she was a werewolf she would have been wolfed out by now, that's just how furious she was feeling.
"If by 'one of them' you mean anything but a homicidal Argent, then yeah. Loud and proud".
Kayla knew she was taking things too far, but she found herself not caring – not when faced with complete and utter stupidity.
"GET OUT!"
"FINE".
Despite her exhaustion and all the aches and pains, she pulled herself from the car and slammed the door shut so forcefully the car shook. Watching in contempt as Allison sped away, leaving her stranded and left behind.
Maybe Derek had been right… maybe striking up a friendship with Allison had been the wrong thing to do. She had been playing with fire. An Argent was still an Argent. A wolf in sheep's clothing.
Allison's car disappeared around the corner, the night suddenly getting quiet.
What a fucking mess.
Derek was still kidnapped. Allison hated her. Stiles-
Oh shit.
She groaned to herself, beginning to walk – or rather limp – her left leg still weak and sore from the spasms, knowing he would be stressing the hell out. She promised she would phone, then she got knocked out and her phone taken off her. She guessed she had easily been in those woods for at least four hours, maybe five… for someone like Stiles, who was a human body made from stress, that was a long time.
But, for whatever reason, she may have finally encountered a little luck. A little less than ten minutes later she heard the familiar horn honking behind her and spun around to see Stiles' jeep skidding to a clumsy stop. The boy in question let out a shout of her name as he hauled and flailed himself from the jeep.
"Kayla? Oh my god, I-I was worried sick" he exclaimed, running over to her, "you didn't answer your phone and Scott wasn't answering his phone and I was going out of my freaking mind Kaylz".
Sweet relief spread through her veins at the sight of him, finally feeling able to relax a little as he swept her into his arms, squeezing her so hard to the point where it got a little sore, but she didn't mind. Stiles was here, that was all that mattered.
"I'm fine" she mumbled against his neck, her arms, weak and frail, wrapping around his neck, "I was gonna call but my phone got lost".
He wasn't letting her go – if anything, he tightened his grip around her, his arms encircling her waist with a kind of desperation she had never felt before, but she enjoyed it. Knowing just how much she was wanted and needed at this moment in time, quietening her racing heart.
"Don't do that again" he whispered, burying his face into her shoulder, effortlessly holding her off the ground, "I… I thought I lost you".
His voice, usually so linear and steady, was shaky. Breaking a little on the word 'lost'.
"Can't get rid of me that easily" she reassured, trying to be playful but knew just how close to death she had come, "I'm okay".
"I just found you… don't make me lose you…"
"You won't" she promised wholeheartedly, "ever. I'm fine".
Eventually, hearing her words, he lowered her to the ground, lifting his head off her shoulder to cup her cheeks, as if he just had to touch her to know she was alive and okay and standing right in front of him.
"I just... I didn't know what happened and... wait, what's wrong with your eyes?" Stiles questioned, his voice going a few octaves higher than normal as he stared at her and, for some reason, she couldn't help but look down in something near embarrassment, fearful he would look at her different now. Like maybe this would drive him away.
She was a freak. She wouldn't blame him if he ran away from her and never looked back.
"Nothing" she lied, pulling away from Stiles' concerned grasp and took a few steps back, keeping her gaze lowered to the road.
"No, there's definitely something. They're like glowing and-"
She didn't want a reminder. Self-conscious and worried about what this could mean. She was changing, but changing into what? The unknown terrified her, and she felt ashamed. Sick to her stomach that she could become something wrong.
She threw her hands up, closing her eyes and digging her knuckles into her eye sockets, as if trying to find an off switch but nothing she did worked – her eyes still glowed, luminous and enchanting.
"Wait, what are you doing?" Stiles asked worriedly, trying to pull her hands away but she just dug them in harder, "don't hurt yourself".
"Just forget about them, okay?" she demanded, keeping her eyes shut and her knuckles pressed against her face, "my freakishly unusual genes just got a whole hell of a lot freakier because my freak, homicidal, psychotic father decided now would be the best time to turn me into whatever the hell he wanted me to be, and I certainly don't need you, of all people, reminding me how much of a freak I am"
"No, I wasn't, I just... they-they suit you" he reassured her, his gentle hands reaching out to cup her wrists, slowly pulling her hands away. She simply snorted disbelievingly, keeping her eyes shut.
"No, seriously" Stiles protested, cupping her cheeks, "open your eyes".
Why would Stiles like them? They were unnatural. A sign of the unknown. Proof that she was more messed up than she ever believed possible.
"Kaylz…" he whispered, "c'mon… look at me" he coaxed her, "don't be scared".
It took a few seconds, but she did. She opened her eyes. Coming face to face with his kind, honey-brown gaze that quickly soothed her, peering deep into her very soul.
To her surprise, he didn't seem surprised or scared. He didn't look at her in disgust. He looked at her like their eyes meeting made him complete.
"I think they're beautiful" he whispered, his lips curving into a soft smile, "just like you".
