CHAPTER 3: The silver moon
The moon hung high above them as they made their way back to the camp. The air was cooler now, the night deepening around them. Despite the intensity of the hunt, there was an unexpected peace between Percy and Artemis, a quiet understanding that had formed during their time together.
"That was... something," Percy said, breaking the silence. "I didn't think hunting with a goddess would be so intense."
Artemis's lips curved upward, the smile fleeting but genuine. "You handled yourself well, Percy. Not many could claim that."
Percy shrugged, trying to downplay the compliment, but the warmth in his chest wouldn't go away. There was something about Artemis that drew him in, something more than just her beauty or her power. It was her strength, her quiet confidence, her ability to be both untouchable and yet... human.
As they reached the edge of the woods, Percy turned to her, his voice softer now. "You know, I never really understood you. You're a goddess, you've seen so much, and yet... you're always so alone."
Artemis's expression softened, and for the first time, Percy saw a vulnerability in her eyes—a flicker of something deep within, something that spoke of centuries of isolation, of a life defined by duty.
"Maybe that's the price of being who I am," she said quietly. "The moon is always alone in the sky, but it never ceases to shine."
Percy didn't know how to respond, but he felt an inexplicable desire to bridge the gap between them, to reach out in a way he hadn't before.
"Maybe," he said, his voice low. "But sometimes, even the moon needs the stars."
Artemis looked at him, and for a moment, their eyes met—silver meeting green. A moment stretched between them, fragile yet full of meaning.
"I think," Artemis said softly, her voice almost a whisper, "that's the closest anyone's ever come to understanding me."
Percy felt his heart skip a beat. And as the silver moon watched over them, he realized that whatever this was between them—this connection—it was only just beginning.
