.
75. Hope
He felt a soft breeze around him and opened his eyes.
He felt weird. Was he dreaming? Was he going crazy?
He looked around and saw that familiar weird room he visited to tell the Monitor about sparing Barry and Kara's life and to take his instead. There was something like a huge fog around it, instead of just a dark sky full of stars, or what looked like stars and he could see scenes inside of it, like a movie screen. He tried to focus and noticed he knew those people.
It was his friends and loved ones.
Crying.
Yes, he was dead, he thought. He saw everything after he rebooted the multiverse, his friends uniting once more to fight the Anti-Monitor.
He noticed Sara's speech to him, about how they wouldn't fail this new world, and everyone just chanting his name.
He couldn't help but noticing Kara felt really shaken with all of it. He lowered his head, just listening to everything happening, and he felt a sharp pain inside.
He gave his life for his friends, for her. He was just sad he never got time to tell her.
He wished he had told her so bad, it hurt.
He was the Spectre now and he was in some sort of after life. He had mysterious powers but he couldn't be there, by her side, by their side, fighting and he knew he would give everything to be there once again.
It wasn't fair.
Meanwhile back in the fight, they had come up with a plan to stop the Anti-Monitor for good. Barry, Ryan Choi and Ray Palmer along with Nash Wells worked hard to create a device that would make him keep shrinking for eternity.
Kara flew in the sky as Ray tossed the device to her.
- Throw it like a girl! – She shouted, excitedly.
- Always! – She said and threw the thing.
The device hit the Anti-Monitor and he kept shrinking back to his original size.
And stopped.
Everyone stared at each other, not quite sure what to do. It was supposed to work. It was their last hope. Kara and Ray flew back to the ground and all heroes got together, ready to keep fighting, even if they had no idea what would happen now.
- Cute. But it didn't work… - The Anti-Monitor said as he kept walking towards their direction, ready to end them for good. – Now I'll kill you all and continue with my plans!
- Not so fast!
They heard a familiar voice and everyone turned to see Oliver, in his Green Arrow suit, with his bow and a weird arrow on his hand. Sara and Barry stared in shock at each other and back to Oliver. Kara's eyes filled with tears, as she couldn't believe what she was seeing. All member of Team Arrow looked in disbelief. All heroes from all other teams stared in shock, a wave of emotions hitting them all.
- You have failed this universe. Again. But for the last time!
Oliver took a deep breath and aimed. He let the arrow go, shooting him straight in the heart.
The Anti – Monitor started to scream, and little by little he started to crack, disintegrating right after.
Oliver was about to turn around when he felt 2 bodies colliding with his. Sara and Barry had their arms around him, he almost lost his balance but the collision made him drop his bow on the ground. He hugged them back as he felt their sobs on his shoulders.
Everyone started to clap and hug Oliver, one by one, all of them crying. He opened his eyes and saw Kara staring at him, as if she was frozen in awe. She took slow steps towards him and he did the same.
- You're… alive! – Kara said, still in shock.
- I'm back… For good.
Oliver wasn't expecting, but Kara jumped at him in a tight hug. She kept touching his arms, shoulders, and his back, as if she was trying to make sure he was there for real, that she wasn't hallucinating.
- How? – She asked, letting him go, her hands reaching for his cheeks as she kept staring at him in disbelief.
- I am as surprised as you are. – He said.
He turned to his friends as Kara let him go and stood by his side. Everyone just stared at him, waiting for Oliver to tell them what was happening.
- Well… - Oliver started
FLASHBACK
Oliver stood there, watching everything happening, his friends trying to fight the Anti-Monitor again and he felt a presence behind him. He turned around just to see the Monitor standing there, with a mysterious look in his face. Oliver was a bit confused. Wasn't he dead?
- I can tell you have a lot of questions.
- You bet I do. But cut the crap, I'm done with your games. Literally. What's happening there? How are you here now? And what are you doing here?
Oliver stared at the Monitor, waiting for answers, but deep down he just wanted to punch that guy in the face.
- The Anti-Monitor found a way to come back and try again.
- I beat him. I sacrificed everything to beat him and give the multiverse another chance.
- You defeated him, but didn't kill him. But…
He said, lifting his hand as Oliver was about to say something.
- Something happened, not even I understand it fully. But you get one chance to go back, live again.
Oliver stared at him, not quite believing what he was hearing. He would have a chance to go back. Wow.
- You'll still be Spectre, you'll have new responsibilities, and you'll have to commit to the mission. Only if you get this one chance right.
- What is it? – Oliver's patience was far long gone.
- You have one shot to get it right. – He said as an arrow appeared on his hand. It had a different tip, it glowed. Oliver stared at it as if he was hypnotized. – One arrow to his heart, the exact spot. And he will be gone forever.
- Why didn't you just give me this before? It would have spared us a lot! – Oliver was beyond pissed
- Because it wasn't allowed. The Anti-Monitor being back wasn't expected. He was supposed to be gone when the new multiverse was reborn, and the cosmic balance changed. So, to be fair, you were given this one chance and to reward you for everything you did so far, everything you sacrificed and suffered… You have a chance to play this new role in this new era, alive, instead of in the after-life.
Oliver nodded with his head, fully understanding now. He grabbed the arrow, and saw his old bow on the floor. He grabbed it too and stared at it, a million images crossing through his mind. He felt the anticipation and before he could leave back to the living world, he stopped and stared at the Monitor.
- Thank you.
- Good luck.
- Just… One more thing…
- What?
- I'm not going back in this ridiculous outfit.
END OF FLASHBACK
Everyone was at the bunker in Star City, celebrating Oliver's return. Barry and Sara were talking to Oliver, excited to have him back. Neither could stop hugging Oliver, and Barry told him to just shut up, because they just got him back and they would hug him a lot and he wouldn't complain, so Oliver didn't even try to argue, laughing.
He was happy.
For the first time in years he was fully happy.
Finally everything he did in his life since he got back from Lian Yu was worth it.
He got to keep this new reality, with his mom, Emiko and Tommy back, With Laurel officially joining his team as the Black Canary since Dinah decided to change her name to Blackhawk, with his city safer. His eyes found Kara's across the room and he thought to himself how much he wished he had told her how he felt before, wondering if now he would have the chance. He was back; they were all in the same Earth now. Maybe it was possible.
He realized he was starting to feel new feelings for her since their last team up, when the Monitor tested them. He knew Barry and Kara were the best of them all and he would never let anything happen to them, so he made a deal to sacrifice himself in their place, but deep down he knew it was more than that. He would easily give his life for her, he knew that now. Even if she had no idea, he did his best to hide his feelings because he was an expert on it, he would do it all to make sure she was alive and safe.
He was lost in his thoughts, alone, when he saw Kara approaching him.
- So… You have powers now… The Spectre…
- Yes – He smiled – I still prefer Green Arrow, tough…
- Me too – She smiled and Oliver looked curiously at her – Is really great to have you back. – She said – Barry told me you gave your life to save us… Barry and I, last year. You didn't have to do it, Oliver…
- I wanted to. You guys are the best of all of us. You were our best chance to face anything but most importantly, the world could not live without Supergirl and The Flash…
- The world can't go on without a Green Arrow too, you know? – She said.
Kara reached for one of his hands, hesitant.
- I appreciate it. What you did for us. And for giving us this new world. It's different; we have a lot to catch up, but still… It's a precious gif.
- You guys helped – He smiled at her.
They walked together outside as they talked. It was exciting to have a whole new world to discover and explore and Kara couldn't wait for it. She knew they all would still have new challenges and enemies to face, but she knew in her heart everything would be all right.
- Listen… - Oliver said as he turned to face her. – I just wanted you to know that, no matter what, I would do it all again, no second thoughts. I would do anything for you… for you all – He added, noticing Kara blushing.
Kara smiled, noticing his emphasis on that first you. She felt her heart beating a bit faster and noticed Oliver's was the same. She could tell he was nervous, because she was too.
The truth is that she was really happy and glad to have super friends on a different Earth before, and she always had seen Oliver as a true hero and great leader but deep inside she knew it was something more. She kept her feelings buried, old feelings from when she met him and had a crush on him the moment she hugged him goodbye after helping them with Dominators. This crush got a bit bigger when she came back to help them against Nazis, but he was with Felicity back then, so she tried her best to get over it. She tried to date William recently, it didn't work because she knew deep down her heart and mind was focused on someone else.
When he died, right after she lost Argo, she felt like her world was falling apart, she wanted to use the Book of Destiny to rewrite reality, and it took her friend Kate to make her see it wasn't the right thing to do. So she focused on help bring Anti-Monitor down.
And now here she was, staring at him in his new form but for her, he was the same Oliver from before… She couldn't describe in words everything she felt inside, it was so much more than happiness.
- All the time I spent in this after – life situation – He said – I could see everything, know everything… It's something that came with these new powers.
Kara stared at him, wondering if he really knew…everything.
- And the one thing I knew, when I saw you… It's how much I regretted never telling you something.
- What? – She asked, feeling nervous again.
Kara had no time to think about anything else because Oliver grabbed her by the waist, under her cape, and brought her to his arms as he gave her a sweet kiss, and she didn't think twice, responding it, by hugging him back. They stared at each other, their noses almost touching and he smiled.
- The way I feel about you.
Kara smiled back at him, giving him a kiss, letting him know how she felt about him.
They would have time now, he thought, getting her message loud and clear, as he kissed her back.
They would all the time in the world.
