CHAPTER 37: A BLACK MANSION CHRISTMAS
That year, the Christmas dinner would take place at the Black mansion. The advanced pregnancies of Tonks and Fleur, who arrived with their husbands and the rest of the Weasleys in the morning, advised that all celebrations be held there.
Ron and Hermione couldn't stop exchanging glances and smiles all day. Harry didn't notice, as he only had eyes for Tonks. Molly and the new wives of the twins were in charge of preparing dinner; both Tonks and Fleur were prohibited from making any effort, seated with their husbands by the fireplace, receiving affection and care from them.
The only one who noticed the change in her brother and Hermione's behavior was Ginny. She watched them amused, thinking about what had happened that night and fearing trouble if their mother found out. Ron noticed his sister's laughter.
"What, is there something on my face?"
"No," Ginny said, trying to suppress her grin. "Just wondering when you're going to tell Mum and Dad about you and Hermione."
Ron's ears turned pink, and Hermione's cheeks flushed. "We, uh, haven't decided on the right moment yet," Hermione said, trying to sound casual.
"Well, you better decide soon. Mum's not exactly the most patient when it comes to secrets," Ginny teased, giving them a knowing look.
Before Ron could respond, Harry walked over, a curious expression on his face. "What's going on here?"
"Nothing, Harry," Hermione said quickly, shooting Ginny a warning glance. "Just talking about dinner."
"Right," Harry said, clearly unconvinced but letting it go. "Well, dinner smells great. Molly and the others have outdone themselves again."
As they moved toward the dining area, Molly called out, "Everyone, dinner's ready! Come and sit down."
The large table was filled with delicious food, and everyone took their places. As they began to eat, laughter and chatter filled the room. For a brief moment, the worries and dangers of the outside world seemed far away.
Arthur Weasley raised his glass for a toast. "To family, to friends, and to those who couldn't be with us tonight. May we find strength in each other and continue to fight for a better world."
"To family and friends," everyone echoed, clinking their glasses together.
As the meal continued, the atmosphere remained warm and joyous. Yet, there was an undercurrent of determination among the adults, a silent vow to protect this happiness against the dark forces threatening their world.
After dinner, as everyone settled into more relaxed conversations, Lupin found himself standing by the window, gazing out into the night. Mad-Eye joined him, handing him a glass of firewhisky.
"A toast to surviving another battle," Moody said gruffly, raising his glass.
Lupin nodded, clinking his glass against Moody's. "To those we've lost and to the fight ahead."
They drank in silence, each lost in their thoughts. Despite the festive surroundings, they knew that their vigilance could never waver. The fight against Voldemort was far from over, but for tonight, they allowed themselves a brief moment of peace.
In the cozy warmth of the Black mansion, surrounded by loved ones, they found the strength to carry on. The battle might be relentless, but so was their resolve. And with each other, they knew they could face whatever came next.
"No, it's just that..." Ginny paused for a moment. "You seem tired, as if you haven't slept well." Both Ron and Hermione tensed nervously. "And the truth is, Hermione doesn't look well either." Ginny got up and went to help her mother and new sisters-in-law.
"Ron, she knows!" Hermione was worried.
"I don't think so; it's just that...!" He didn't know what to say.
"I sleep with her; last night, she surely noticed I didn't come back until morning!" Hermione said, her voice filled with concern.
"As soon as we can, we'll talk to her!" Ron nodded, agreeing with her.
The dinner went on joyfully; to Mrs. Weasley's surprise, her new daughters-in-law were doing very well in the kitchen, learning easily. Everything they prepared turned out just like any meal made by the Weasleys, delicious.
Tonks and Fleur talked about their future children, what they wanted to buy, and what they had learned about their care. Harry and Bill exchanged significant glances.
The twins behaved as usual, although their mother tried to control them and asked for help from their wives. They shrugged and only replied, "Molly, if you haven't been able to handle them all this time, what makes you think we'll change them overnight?" Satisfied with the explanation, Molly hugged and kissed them.
Amid laughter, everyone was having fun. None ignored the situation outside, but for one night, they wanted to enjoy their loved ones; they didn't know when they could gather again.
Afterwards, everyone decided to stay in the house overnight; there were plenty of rooms, and they could all open their presents together in the morning.
As the evening wore on, the conversations became more relaxed. Arthur Weasley entertained everyone with stories of his encounters with Muggle artifacts, while Bill and Charlie recounted their adventures from their travels abroad.
Harry found himself sitting by the fire, watching the flames dance. Ginny came over and sat beside him, leaning her head on his shoulder. "It's nice to have a night like this," she said softly.
"Yeah, it is," Harry agreed, wrapping an arm around her. "It's good to remember what we're fighting for."
"Exactly," Ginny replied, giving him a small smile. "And to make the most of these moments when we have them."
As the night deepened, the Weasley children, along with Harry, Hermione, and the others, found themselves in a circle, reminiscing about old times at Hogwarts and the adventures they had shared. Laughter echoed through the room, and for a while, the burdens they carried were lightened.
Finally, as the hour grew late, Molly began to shepherd everyone to bed. "Come on, all of you. Get some rest. Tomorrow's a big day."
With sleepy smiles and murmured goodnights, they all headed to their respective rooms. Ron and Hermione lingered for a moment at the bottom of the stairs. "Tomorrow," Ron said quietly. "We'll talk to her tomorrow."
Hermione nodded, giving his hand a squeeze. "Together," she whispered.
"Together," he agreed.
As they made their way to their rooms, the Black mansion settled into a peaceful silence, the warmth of family and friendship wrapping around each of them like a comforting blanket. The fight outside might be fierce, but within these walls, love and unity reigned supreme. And for tonight, that was enough.
Ron and Hermione said goodbye at her room's door; as much as they wanted to spend the night together again, both were acutely aware that Mrs. Weasley would be very watchful, and they'd likely be caught off guard.
Hermione closed the door and leaned against it, unknowingly letting out a sigh. Ginny looked at her and understood everything. "Looks like you won't be repeating it!"
The brunette startled. "I don't know what you mean!"
"Come on, Hermione, last night you were with my brother. I don't know what you did, and I don't want to know, but I can imagine." Ginny tried to reason. "I'm not my mother; you're both adults and know what you're doing. For my part, no one will know anything. But be careful, or we'll have to organize both the wedding and the funeral."
"Funeral?" Hermione raised an eyebrow.
"My mother will kill Ron if she catches you two together." Hermione approached the redhead, a mix of gratitude and amusement on her face.
"Thank you, Ginny. You're the closest thing I have to a sister."
"Same here!" Ginny replied, giving Hermione a light pat on the back. "We'd better get to bed; I can't wait to see the presents! I'd ask you what mine is, but I'm sure it's a good book."
Hermione mockingly looked at her from the bed. "Very funny, but I'm sure you'll like it." She finished before lying down, a smile creeping onto her face as she imagined Ginny's reaction in the morning.
In another room, a similar scene was unfolding. Tonks was bouncing on her heels, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Come on, tell me!" she urged, giving her best innocent look to Remus.
"I assure you both will like it, but you won't know until morning," he replied with a teasing smile.
Tonks placed a hand on her belly, a soft glow of anticipation lighting up her features. "It's for both of us," she said, her voice filled with affection.
"No, each one has their own, but I know you'll both like them." Remus chuckled at her eagerness, finding it endearing.
"Remus! You can't just leave me hanging like this!" she pouted playfully. "What if I can't sleep tonight, just thinking about it?"
He laughed, shaking his head. "That's the point! It's a surprise, love. Just know it will be worth the wait."
Tonks sighed dramatically. "Fine, I'll be patient. But the moment the sun rises, I expect you to be up and ready to open presents!"
"I promise," he said, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "Now, get some rest. Tomorrow will be a big day."
As Tonks settled down, her heart filled with warmth and anticipation, she drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the joys that awaited them in the morning. The Black mansion, filled with love and laughter, was a sanctuary amidst the darkness, a reminder that hope still existed, even in the most challenging of times.
No matter how much she tried, she couldn't get Remus to say anything. After giving him a soft kiss, she turned around, pretending to be asleep. He tried to approach her but failed; instead, he turned and settled down, a bit annoyed by her playful antics. Tonks, amused by his frustration, playfully climbed on top of him, and with laughter in her eyes, they began kissing, ready to spend one of many wonderful nights together.
Meanwhile, Ron stared at the ceiling of his room, replaying the memories of the previous night. He had to restrain himself from running out and barging into the girls' room to kiss his girlfriend. Very annoyed, he turned with the pillow over his head, trying to find sleep. The scent of Hermione's hair lingered on it, which certainly didn't help him relax. He sighed once more before turning to the other side, eventually flipping again and succumbing to slumber, enjoying the comforting aroma of his girlfriend.
The next morning, Harry woke up naked, the warmth of the blankets enveloping him. He felt someone on top of him and opened his eyes to find Tonks asleep on his stomach, a serene smile of happiness and tranquility adorning her face. Harry gazed at her, relishing the sight. He loved watching her sleep; she had that innocent look that characterized her so well. He knew every feature of her face by heart, recognizing the subtle changes brought about by her metamorphmagus powers, but no matter what she did, he always adored the real Tonks—the one he had come to know at Grimmauld Place.
Tonks stirred, letting out a sound that resembled a purr. She opened her eyes, noticing Harry's gaze, and smiled brightly. "How long have you been awake?"
"I don't know; when I look at you, I lose track of time," he replied, unable to hide his affection. She beamed and hugged him tightly.
"I could spend hours just watching you sleep," she said, her voice soft and warm.
"I love it when you say things like that!" Harry responded, leaning in for a passionate kiss.
Tonks pulled away slightly, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "We'd better get downstairs; I'm eager to open my gifts." As soon as she mentioned presents, she seemed to snap into action.
With the lightness her belly allowed, she carefully got up and started getting ready, just like Harry, who couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm.
As they made their way to the living room, the sounds of laughter and chatter greeted them. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as the rest of the Weasley family gathered, ready to celebrate Christmas together. Harry and Tonks exchanged knowing glances, their hearts full of joy for the day ahead. The magic of the season was alive, and they were determined to savor every moment.
Half an hour later, Harry and Tonks descended the stairs, making their way to the lively living room. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, and the sight that greeted them was delightful: piles of colorful gifts filled every corner, a testament to the love and generosity of the Weasley family.
They exchanged amused glances as they navigated through the festive chaos, taking a moment to find their own presents amid the colorful wrapping. Just then, Ginny and Hermione entered, followed closely by a sleepy Ron, rubbing his eyes as he stumbled into the room.
The other Weasley siblings and their spouses were already gathered, chattering and laughing in anticipation. The only ones missing were the twins; given their recent wedding, they were likely still celebrating with their brides.
From the kitchen came the delicious aroma of breakfast wafting through the air. Mrs. Weasley had clearly risen earlier than anyone else to prepare a feast. The kitchen door swung open, and the Weasley couple entered the living room, the warmth of their smiles matching the cozy atmosphere.
"It seems like everyone woke up early!" Mrs. Weasley remarked, her eyes scanning the room. Her gaze fell on the two absent twins. "You can't change someone overnight."
Just then, Fred and George appeared at the top of the stairs, arms wrapped affectionately around their wives. The moment they set foot on the last step, the room erupted into joyous laughter and chatter, and everyone dove into the mountain of gifts waiting for them.
The excitement was palpable as each family member began to unwrap their presents. The traditional Weasley sweaters, lovingly knitted by their mother, brought smiles to everyone's faces. Ron handed Hermione a carefully wrapped gift, revealing a book on advanced potions. Her eyes lit up with delight.
"Thank you, Ron! This is perfect!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with genuine excitement. In return, she handed him a gift of her own, which he opened to discover a book detailing the greatest Quidditch matches in history.
"This is brilliant, Hermione! I can't wait to read it!" Ron grinned, his cheeks turning slightly pink.
Both Tonks and Fleur squealed with joy as they unwrapped an assortment of baby clothes, their faces beaming with delight. "Look at this little onesie!" Tonks exclaimed, holding it up for everyone to see.
Mr. Weasley opened his gifts, his eyes nearly popping out of his head at the sight of Muggle gadgets. "Oh, this is fascinating! What do you think this one does?" he asked, holding up a small device with buttons.
Mrs. Weasley's joy was evident when she opened a beautifully crafted robe, a gift from the twins. "Oh, this is lovely, dears! Thank you so much!" she said, hugging them tightly.
Meanwhile, all the married couples received a clock similar to the Weasleys', each hand bearing the names of their loved ones. The laughter and chatter filled the room, a beautiful melody of family and love that momentarily drowned out the darkness of the world outside.
Tonks leaned closer to Harry, her eyes sparkling with happiness. "This is what Christmas is all about, isn't it?" she whispered. Harry nodded, feeling grateful to be surrounded by family and friends. For this moment, they could forget the troubles outside and simply enjoy each other's company.
As the gift exchange continued, Harry gave Ron a Nimbus 2000 broomstick, leaving him utterly amazed. "No way! This is incredible!" Ron exclaimed, his eyes wide with disbelief. He immediately hugged Harry, nearly knocking Hermione down in his excitement.
Hermione unwrapped her own gift next, revealing a complete collection of books on advanced magic and the history of the magical world. She gasped in delight. "Harry, this is amazing! Thank you so much!" Before she could think, she threw her arms around him, nearly knocking him over with her enthusiasm.
"Careful there!" Harry laughed, trying to steady himself as Tonks watched the scene with a smile.
Tonks then handed Harry a small gift, a toy broomstick. He raised an eyebrow, slightly confused. "What's this for?"
"Who better than you to teach our child to fly?" she replied with a cheeky grin.
"Or daughter!" she added playfully before leaning in to kiss him.
Meanwhile, Harry had a surprise of his own for Tonks. When she opened her gift, she found a pendant that, like their rings, featured a lion and a phoenix intertwined. "Oh, Harry!" she gasped, her eyes shining with emotion.
"I thought it would be nice for your ring to have a companion," he explained. "I want you to know that I'll always be by your side, no matter what happens."
With tears of joy in her eyes, Tonks hugged him tightly, so tightly that she managed to topple him backward. They landed on the plush carpet, lost in a moment that felt more important than anything else.
"Alright, alright, lovebirds, leave something for later!" the twins chimed in, returning with their usual humor.
"Harry, you better control yourself, or before your son is born, you'll have another one on the way!" Fred joked.
"OUCH! What did I say, Alicia?" Fred asked, rubbing his arm where his wife had playfully tapped him.
"If you have to ask, you deserve another one!" Alicia shot back, earning laughs from everyone in the room.
Harry and Tonks couldn't help but laugh along, their cheeks flushed with happiness. Harry's second gift to Tonks was also a hit—two stuffed animals, one a vibrant red lion and the other a fiery phoenix, both adorned with various gold details.
"They're adorable!" Tonks squealed, hugging them close. "We're going to need a whole nursery for our little one at this rate!"
The Black mansion was alive with the echoes of laughter and joy, and each day felt like a small piece of paradise in the midst of chaos. Harry and Tonks reveled in their time together, cherishing the intimacy they shared as they prepared for the arrival of their baby.
One evening, as they sat by the fire, Harry turned to Tonks, his expression serious yet tender. "I've been thinking about what happens when the baby arrives. I want to be there for you, for us. I want to make sure we have time together as a family."
Tonks looked at him, her eyes softening. "I want that too, Harry. But I also know our lives will change. We'll have to navigate it together, just like we always have."
He took her hand, squeezing it gently. "Whatever happens, I want you to know that I'm committed to making this work. We'll find our way."
Tonks leaned in, resting her head against his shoulder. "And we'll make it fun. I want our child to grow up in a world full of laughter, adventure, and love."
Harry chuckled softly, "Just like the Weasleys."
"Exactly! They know how to cherish every moment, and I want that for us too."
They exchanged a warm smile, a shared understanding passing between them, before they fell into a comfortable silence, watching the flames dance.
Meanwhile, Ron and Hermione found a moment alone in the kitchen, the aroma of Mrs. Weasley's cooking filling the air.
"Ron, do you think we'll ever have that kind of life?" Hermione asked, looking out the window at the snowflakes falling gently.
"What kind of life?" he replied, leaning against the counter.
"You know, the big family gatherings, kids running around, and just being happy together."
"Of course we will," Ron said confidently. "After all, we're practically already living it with the Weasleys."
Hermione smiled, her heart swelling with affection for him. "I guess you're right. It's just…sometimes it feels so daunting."
"Hey, we'll figure it out together," he reassured her, taking her hands in his. "I promise. And when we do have kids, they'll be the coolest kids ever."
Hermione laughed, squeezing his hands. "And they'll have the best aunts and uncles!"
"Speaking of which, we should probably go check on them. I think they're planning something."
As they stepped out of the kitchen, they noticed the twins whispering conspiratorially with Ginny and Harry.
"What are you lot up to?" Ron asked suspiciously, raising an eyebrow.
"Nothing much, just a little surprise for everyone!" Fred replied, grinning mischievously.
"Yeah, a surprise! Trust us," George added, winking.
Hermione exchanged a glance with Ron, both of them curious yet cautious. "What kind of surprise?" she pressed.
"Oh, you'll see!" Ginny chimed in, her excitement palpable.
