The New Ship

Chapter 10

Grace knew she should regret having sex with Mike, but she didn't. He was so different then Kent had been. Kind, gentle, passionate and loving. He had practically moved in and the kids loved having him there. Eli, especially, seemed to look for Mike after school. On Saturday morning, Mike packed Eli up and they headed out to go fishing. Her mom came over to borrow baking soda and watched Grace working on a cake she was making. Grace knew something was on her mind, and Mary finally spoke up.

"Your dad and I went for breakfast early this morning and noticed Mike's truck here." Mary remarked.

"Yes." Grace answered.

"Grace…I don't really care about your political career, but I am

concerned for your reputation and I am ever more concerned for the kids." Mary said.

"You said you like Mike." Grace replied.

"I do. Much more then I ever liked Kent. I just question how quickly you're moving. You've only known one another…a month? And he's practically living here. Grace, my concern is the kids moreso. You are an adult and will land on your feet if you and Mike don't work out. Liv and Eli are both seeking a father-figure and Mike has stepped into the role. But if something happens between him and you…those kids will be in rough shape." Mary said.

"Who says anything will happen?" Grace asked.

"He's got a very successful career in the Navy. You have to spend three months of the year in Texas. Will he want to go with you and the kids?" Mary asked.

"We've not talked about it." Grace admitted.

"Look, as I said; I like Mike. Your dad does too. He is good with the kids. Just look at every angle. The kids. Your job. His job. The media. And the fact that you and he are both still grieving for family members. I do think that is why he has gotten so attached so fast to Eli and Liv. He misses his kids deeply." Mary answered.

"So, you think we need to slow down?" Grace asked.

"Maybe…maybe not. Just have some conversations about needs, expectations, your pasts, and all the many aspects. If at that point, its still right for you; keep moving. If you need to figure things out, slow down." Mary said before kissing Grace's forehead.

Grace knew her mom was right. It was only a matter of time before she and Mike had to have the conversation about careers, kids and so many other things. It might very well be a deal breaker for them.
